Measurements of gas holdups in bubble columns of 0.16, 0.30 and 0.33 m diameter were carried out. These columns were operated in co-current flow of gas and liquid phases and in semibatch mode. The column of 0.33 m diameter was operated at elevated pressures of up to 3.6 MPa. Nitrogen was employed as the gas phase and deionized water, aqueous solutions of ethanol and acetone and pure acetone and cumene as the liquid phase. The effects of differing liquid properties, gas density (due to elevated pressure), temperature, column diameter and superficial liquid velocity on gas holdup were studied. The gas holdup measurements were utilized by differential pressure measurements at different positions along the height of the bubble columns which allowed for the identification of axial gas holdup profiles. A decrease of gas holdup with increasing column diameter and an increase of gas holdup with increasing pressure was observed. The effect of a slightly decreasing gas holdup with increasing liquid velocity was found to exist at smaller column diameters. The use of organic solvents as the liquid phase resulted in a significant increase in gas holdup compared to deionized water. It is found that published gas holdup models are mostly unable to predict the results obtained in this study.  相似文献

The possible events during bubble formation on an orifice were investigated using a rectangular bubble column (30 cm × 30 cm × 100 cm). The gas flow rate through a single orifice was adjusted from 0.1 dm3/min to 5.0 dm3/min covering a high flow rate regime. At the high gas flow rate, the bubble formation process was complicated by diverse events, such as wake effect, channeling, and orifice-induced turbulent flow. The detachment period could be used to discern the bubble formation steps because it was strongly affected by the above events. The bubble size distribution around the orifice was also analyzed to gain a clearer understanding of the bubble formation process. Above the rate of 3.0 dm3/min through a single orifice, the detachment period converged to a value of 25 ms irrespective of the orifice diameter. The bubble size distribution also showed little difference in this range of gas flow rate. This could be explained by the development of turbulent flow around the orifice. A 0.15 m in-diameter bubble column was tested to investigate the effect of orifice-induced turbulent flow on the regime transition in which the homogeneous flow regime is converted into the heterogeneous flow regime in the column. Obvious distinction between the orifice- and column-induced transitions was observed.  相似文献

To investigate the effects of hydrophilic particles on slurry bubble flows in a bubble column, distributions of the local gas holdup and the bubble frequency are measured using an electric conductivity probe. Particles are made of silica and their diameter is 100 μm. The particle volumetric concentration CS is varied from 0 to 0.40. The measured data imply that the presence of particles promotes bubble coalescence. The film drainage time for two coalescing bubbles in a quasi two-dimensional bubble flow in a small vessel is also measured to quantitatively evaluate the particle effect on coalescence. A particle-effect multiplier is introduced into a coalescence efficiency model by taking into account the data of film drainage time and is implemented into a multi-fluid model. The main conclusions obtained are as follows: (1) the local gas holdup and bubble frequency in slurry bubble flows decrease with increasing the particle concentration, (2) the hydrophilic particles enhance bubble coalescence and the enhancement saturates at CS  0.45, (3) the particle effect on coalescence is well accounted for by introducing the particle-effect multiplier to the film drainage time, and (4) the multi-fluid model can give good predictions for the distribution of the local gas holdup in the slurry bubble column.  相似文献

A new approach for simulating the formation of a froth layer in a slurry bubble column is proposed. Froth is considered a separate phase, comprised of a mixture of gas, liquid, and solid. The simulation was carried out using commercial flow simulation software (FIRE v2014) for particle sizes of 60–150 μm at solid concentrations of 0–40 vol%, and superficial gas velocities of 0.02–0.034 m/s in a slurry bubble column with a hydraulic diameter of 0.2 m and height of 1.2 m. Modelling calculations were conducted using a Eulerian–Eulerian multiphase approach with k–ε turbulence. The population balance equations for bubble breakup, bubble coalescence rate, and the interfacial exchange of mass and momentum were included in the computational fluid dynamics code by writing subroutines in Fortran to track the number density of different bubble sizes. Flow structure, radial gas holdup, and Sauter mean bubble diameter distributions at different column heights were predicted in the pulp zone, while froth volume fraction and density were predicted in the froth zone. The model was validated using available experimental data, and the predicted and experimental results showed reasonable agreement. To demonstrate the effect of increasing solid concentration on the coalescence rate, a solid-effect multiplier in the coalescence efficiency equation was used. The solid-effect multiplier decreased with increasing slurry concentration, causing an increase in bubble coalescence efficiency. A slight decrease in the coalescence efficiency was also observed owing to increasing particle size, which led to a decrease in Sauter mean bubble diameter. The froth volume fraction increased with solid concentration. These results provide an improved understanding of the dynamics of slurry bubble reactors in the presence of hydrophilic particles.  相似文献

Dispersion of gas into pulp-suspension horizontal flow was investigated downstream of 90° tees for ranges of fibre mass concentrations (0–3.0%), superficial liquid/pulp velocities (0.5–5.0 m/s) and superficial gas velocities (0.11–0.44 m/s) based on a gas mixing index, derived from the standard deviation of cross-sectional local gas holdup obtained from electrical resistance tomography. Mixing for dilute suspensions was similar to that for water, but differed significantly for higher suspension concentrations. Mixing worsened with increasing fibre mass concentration for the bubble flow regime, likely due to dense fibre networks in the core of the pipe causing bubbles to congregate near the wall. When buoyancy was significant, gas uniformity improved with increasing pulp concentration, since robust fibre networks caused liquid/pulp slugs to flow at the top of the pipe, whereas stratified flow was approached at lower concentrations. Mixing was less dependent on superficial liquid/pulp velocity at higher pulp concentrations, due to less variation in flow regimes.  相似文献

An experimental investigation was carried out on viscous oil–gas flow characteristics in a 69 mm internal diameter pipe. Two-phase flow patterns were determined from holdup time-traces and videos of the flow field in a transparent section of the pipe, in which synthetic commercial oils (32 and 100 cP) and sulfur hexafluoride gas (SF6) were fed at oil superficial velocities from 0.04 to 3 m/s and gas superficial velocities from 0.0075 to 3 m/s.  相似文献

Experimental results for various water and air superficial velocities in developing adiabatic horizontal two-phase pipe flow are presented. Flow pattern maps derived from videos exhibit a new boundary line in intermittent regime. This transition from water dominant to water–gas coordinated regimes corresponds to a new transition criterion CT = 2, derived from a generalized representation with the dimensionless coordinates of Taitel and Dukler.Velocity, turbulent kinetic energy and dissipation rate, void fraction and bubble size radial profiles measured at 40 pipe diameters for JL = 4.42 m/s by hot film velocimetry and optical probes confirm this transition: the gas influence is not continuous but strongly increases beyond JG = 0.06 m/s. The maximum dissipation rate, derived from spectra, is increased in two-phase flow by a factor 5 with respect to the single phase case. The axial evolution of the bubble intercept length histograms also reveal the flow organization in horizontal layers, driven by buoyancy effects. Bubble coalescence is attested by a maximum bubble intercept evolving from 2.5 to 4.5 mm along the pipe. Turbulence generated by the bubbles is also manifest by the 4-fold increase of the maximum turbulent dissipation rate along the pipe.  相似文献

The hydrodynamics and energy consumption have been studied in a cold flow, bubbling and turbulent, pressurized gas–liquid–solid three-phase fluidized bed (0.15 m ID × 1 m height) with concurrent gas–liquid up flow is proposed with the intention of increasing the gas hold up. The hydrodynamic behaviour is described and characterised by some specific gas and liquid velocities. Particles are easily fluidized and can be uniformly distributed over the whole height of the column. The effect of parameters like liquid flow rate, gas flow rate, particle loading, particle size, and solid density on gas hold up and effect of gas flow rate, solid density and particle size on solid hold up, energy consumption and minimum fluidization velocity has been studied. At the elevated pressures a superior method for better prediction of minimum fluidization velocity and terminal settling velocities has been adopted. The results have been interpreted with Bernoulli’s theorem and Richardson–Zaki equation. Based on the assumption of the gas and liquid as a pretend fluid, a simplification has been made to predict the particle terminal settling velocities. The Richardson–Zaki parameter n′ was compared with Renzo’s results. A correlation has been proposed with the experimental results for the three-phase fluidization.  相似文献

Delineation of mini- and micro-scale channels with respect to two-phase flow has been the subject of many research papers. There is no consensus on when the small channel can be characterized as a mini-channel or micro-channel. The idea proposed by this paper is to use the normalized bubble nose radius, liquid film thickness top over bottom ratio, and bubble shape contour, which are found under normal gravity conditions in slug flow through a horizontal adiabatic channel, as the delineation criteria. The input parameters are bubble nose radius and bubble nose velocity as the characteristic length scale and characteristic velocity scale respectively. 3D numerical simulation with ANSYS FLUENT was used to obtain the necessary data. Following CFD practice, a mesh independence study and a numerical model validation against published experimental data were both conducted. Analysis of the numerical simulation results showed that channels with D  100 μm can be characterized as a micro-system, while channels with D  400 μm belong to mini-systems. The region 200 μm  D  300 μm represents a transition from the micro-scale to mini-scale.  相似文献

The concurrent upward two-phase flow of air and water in a long vertical large diameter pipe with an inner diameter (D) of 200 mm and a height (z) of 26 m (z/D = 130) was investigated experimentally at low superficial liquid velocities from 0.05009 to 0.3121 m/s and the superficial gas velocities from 0.01779 to 0.5069 m/s. The resultant void fractions range from 0.03579 to 0.4059. According to the observations using a high speed video camera, the flow regimes of bubbly, developing cap bubbly and fully-developed cap bubbly flows prevailed in the flows. The developing cap bubbly flow appeared as a flow regime transition from bubbly to fully-developed cap bubble flow in the vertical large diameter pipe. The developing cap bubbly flow changes gradually and lasts for a long time period and a wide axial region in the flow direction, in contrast to a sudden transition from bubbly to slug flows in a small diameter pipe. The analysis in this study showed that the flow regime transition depends not only on the void fraction but also on the axial distance in the flow and the pipe diameter. The axial flow development brings about the transition to happen in a lower void fraction flow and the increase of pipe diameter causes the transition to happen in a higher void fraction flow. The measured void fraction showed an N-shaped axial changing manner that the void fraction increases monotonously with axial position in the bubbly flow, decreases non-monotonously with axial position in the developing cap bubbly flow, and increases monotonously again with axial position in the fully-developed cap bubbly flow. The temporary void fraction decrease phenomenon in the transition region from bubbly to cap bubbly flow can be attributed to the formation of medium to large cap bubbles and their gradual growth into the maximum size of cap bubble and/or cluster of large cap bubbles in the developing cap bubbly flow. In order to predict the N-shaped axial void fraction changing behaviors in the flow regime transition from bubbly to cap bubbly flow, the existing 12 drift flux correlation sets for large diameter pipes are reviewed and their predictabilities are studied against the present experimental data. Although some drift flux correlation sets, such as those of Clark and Flemmer (1986) and Hibiki and Ishii (2003), can predict the present experimental data with reasonable average relative deviations, no drift flux correlation set for distribution parameter and drift velocity can give a reliable prediction for the observed N-shaped axial void fraction changing behaviors in the region from bubbly to cap bubbly flow in a vertical large diameter pipe.  相似文献

This research focuses on acquiring accurate flow boiling heat transfer data and flow pattern visualization for three refrigerants, R134a, R236fa and R245fa in a 1.030 mm channel. We investigate trends in the data, and their possible mechanisms, for mass fluxes from 200 to 1600 kg/m2s, heat fluxes from 2.3 kW/m2 to 250 kW/m2 at Tsat = 31 °C and ΔTsub from 2 to 9 K. The local saturated flow boiling heat transfer coefficients display a heat flux and a mass flux dependency but no residual subcooling influence. The changes in heat transfer trends correspond well with flow regime transitions. These were segregated into the isolated bubble (IB) regime, the coalescing bubble (CB) regime, and the annular (A) regime for the three fluids. The importance of nucleate boiling and forced convection in these small channels is still relatively unclear and requires further research.  相似文献

It is known that bubble size affects seriously the average void fraction in bubbly flows where buoyant velocities vary considerably with bubble size. On the contrary, there is no systematic literature report about bubble size effects on the intensity and frequency of void fraction fluctuations around the average void fraction. This work aims to provide such information. An electrical impedance technique is employed along with non-intrusive ring electrodes to register void fraction fluctuations down to 10−5. Bubble size fluctuations are estimated from high resolution optical images. Experiments are conducted in co-current upward dispersed bubble flow inside a 21 mm tube with average bubble size between ∼50 and ∼700 μm. Water and blood simulant are used as test liquids with velocity from ∼3 to ∼30 cm s−1. The above resemble conditions of Decompression Sickness (DCS) in the bloodstream of human vena cava. It is found that the intensity and frequency of void fraction fluctuations vary appreciably with bubble size at constant gas and liquid flow rates. Moreover, these variations are not random but scale with bubble size. As a first step to quantify this effect, an empirical expression is derived that relates average bubble size to the ratio standard deviation/average value of void fraction.  相似文献

In order to develop the interfacial area transport equation for the interfacial transfer terms in the two-fluid model, accurate data sets on axial development of local parameters such as void fraction, interfacial area concentration, interfacial gas velocity and Sauter mean diameter are indispensable to verify the modeled source and sink terms in the interfacial area transport equation. From this point of view, local measurements of both group 1 spherical/distorted bubbles and group 2 cap/slug bubbles in vertical upward air–water two-phase flow in a large diameter pipe with 200 mm in inner diameter and 26 m in height were performed at three axial locations of z/D = 41.5, 82.8 and 113 as well as 11 radial locations from r/R = 0–0.95 by using four-sensor probe method. Here, z, r, D and R are the axial distance from the inlet, radial distance from the pipe center, pipe diameter and pipe radius, respectively. The liquid flow rate and the void fraction ranged from 0.0505 m/s to 0.312 m/s and from 1.98% to 32.6%, respectively in the present experiment. The flow condition covered extensive region of bubbly flow, cap turbulent flow as well as their transition. The extensive analysis on the radial profiles of local flow parameters and their axial developments demonstrate the development of interfacial structures along the flow direction due to the bubble coalescence and breakup and the gas expansion. The significant decrease in void faction and interfacial area concentration and the increase in Sauter mean diameter and interfacial velocity were observed when the gradual flow regime transition occurred. Finally, the net change in the interfacial area concentration due to the bubble coalescence and breakup was quantitatively investigated in the present paper to reflect the true transfer mechanisms in observed two-phase flows.  相似文献

A diagnostic technique capable of characterizing interfaces between transparent, immiscible fluids is developed and demonstrated by investigating the morphology of liquid–gas interfaces in an adiabatic two-phase flow through a microchannel of 500 μm × 500 μm square cross section. Water seeded with 0.5 μm-diameter fluorescent polystyrene particles is pumped through the channel, and the desired adiabatic two-phase flow regime is achieved through controlled air injection. The diagnostic technique relies on obtaining particle position data through epifluorescent imaging of the flow at excitation and emission wavelengths of 532 nm and 620 nm, respectively. The particle position data are then used to resolve interface locations to within ±1 μm in the focal plane. By mapping the interface within individual focal planes at various depths within the channel, it is possible to determine the complete liquid–gas interface geometry across the channel cross section in a dynamic flow environment. Utilizing this approach, the liquid–gas phase boundaries of annular flows within a microchannel have been successfully characterized.  相似文献

In this paper we focus on the impact of varying the aspect ratio of rectangular microchannels, on the overall pressure drop involving water boiling. An integrated system comprising micro-heaters, sensors and microchannels has been realized on (1 1 0) silicon wafers, following CMOS compatible process steps. Rectangular microchannels were fabricated with varying aspect ratios (width [W] to depth [H]) but constant hydraulic diameter of 142 ± 2 μm and length of 20 mm. The invariant nature of the hydraulic diameter is confirmed through two independent means: physical measurements using profilometer and by measuring the pressure drop in single-phase fluid flow. The experimental results show that the pressure drop for two-phase flow in rectangular microchannels experiences minima at an aspect ratio of about 1.6. The minimum is possibly due to opposing trends of frictional and acceleration pressure drops, with respect to aspect ratio. In a certain heat flux and mass flux range, it is observed that the two-phase pressure drop is lower than the corresponding single-phase value. This is the first study to investigate the effect of aspect ratio in two-phase flow in microchannels, to the best of our knowledge. The results are in qualitative agreement with annular flow model predictions. These results improve the possibility of designing effective heat-sinks based on two-phase fluid flow in microchannels.  相似文献

Oil–water two-phase flow experiments were conducted in horizontal ducts made of Plexiglas® to determine the in situ oil fraction (holdup) by means of the closing valves technique, using mineral oil (viscosity: 0.838 Pa s at 20 °C; density: 890 kg m−3) and tap water. The ducts present sudden contractions from 50 mm to 40 mm i.d. and from 50 mm to 30 mm i.d., with contraction ratios of 0.64 and 0.36, respectively. About 200–320 tests were performed by varying the flow rates of the phases. Flow patterns were investigated for both the up- and downstream pipe in order to assess whether relevant variations of the flow patterns across the sudden contraction take place. Data were then compared with predictions of a specific correlation for oil–water flow and some correlations for gas–water flow. A drift-flux model was also applied to determine the distribution parameter.  相似文献

The void fraction and the pressure waves in an air–water mixture flowing in the slug regime are experimentally investigated in a horizontal line. The test section is made of a transparent Plexiglas pipe with 26 mm ID and 26.24 m long, operating at ambient temperature and pressure. The flow induced transients are made by quickly changing the air or the water inlet velocity. The test grid has four operational points. This choice allows one to create expansion and compression waves due to the changes to the gas or to the liquid. Each experimental run is repeated 100 times to extract an ensemble average capable of filtering out the intrinsic flow intermittence and disclosing the void fraction and pressure waves’ features. The slug flow properties such as the bubble nose translational velocity, the lengths of liquid film underneath the bubble and the liquid slug are also measured. The objective of the work is two-fold: access the main characteristics of the void fraction and pressure waves and disclose the mechanics of the transient slug flow as described through the changes of the slug flow properties.  相似文献

Two-phase air–water flow characteristics are experimentally investigated in horizontal circular micro-channels. Test sections are made of fused silica. The experiments are conducted based on three different inner diameters of 0.53, 0.22 and 0.15 mm with the corresponding lengths of 320, 120 and 104 mm, respectively. The test runs are done at superficial velocities of gas and liquid ranging between 0.37–42.36 and 0.005–3.04 m/s, respectively. The flow visualisation is facilitated by systems mainly including stereozoom microscope and high-speed camera. The flow regime maps developed from the observed flow patterns are presented. The void fractions are determined based on image analysis. New correlation for two-phase frictional multiplier is also proposed for practical applications.  相似文献

In this work, the scale-up methodology of He et al. (1997) that is based on maintaining similar or close dimensionless groups in gas–solid spouted beds has been evaluated. Two geometrically similar spouted beds of 0.152 m and 0.076 m diameter have been used. It has been demonstrated experimentally, that there is non-similarity in the local hydrodynamic parameters such as solids holdup and dimensionless solids velocity, when all the dimensionless groups have been matched or close to each other in the two studied spouted beds. This confirms that the global hydrodynamic parameters should not be used to confirm the validity of or to evaluate the dimensionless groups scale-up based methodologies.  相似文献

A method which combines standard two-dimensional particle image velocimetry (PIV) with a new image processing algorithm has been developed to measure the average local gas bubble velocities, as well as the local velocities of the liquid phase, within small stirred vessel reactors. The technique was applied to measurements in a gas–liquid high throughput experimentation (HTE) vessel of 45 mm diameter, but it is equally suited to measurements in larger scale reactors. For the measurement of liquid velocities, 3 μm latex seeding particles were used. For gas velocity measurements, a separate experiment was conducted which involved doping the liquid phase with fluorescent Rhodamine dye to allow the gas–liquid interfaces to be identified. The analysis of raw PIV images enabled the detection of bubbles within the laser plane, their differentiation from obscuring bubbles in front of the laser plane, and their use in lieu of tracer particles for gas velocity analysis using cross-correlation methods. The accuracy of the technique was verified by measuring the velocity of a bubble rising in a vertical glass column. The new method enabled detailed velocity fields of both phases to be obtained in an air–water system. The overall flow patterns obtained showed a good qualitative agreement with previous work in large scale vessels. The downward liquid velocities above the impeller were greatly reduced by the addition of the gas, and significant differences between the flow patterns of the two-phases were observed.  相似文献
