This study considers the prediction of the degree of asymmetry in the circumferential distribution of the liquid film in the tube cross section of horizontal annular gas–liquid two-phase flow, endemic of the lower region of this flow regime near the stratified-wavy flow transition boundary. Focusing on disturbance waves as the predominant mechanism for transporting the liquid in the annular film from the bottom to the top of the tube to counterbalance the draining effect of gravity, a new prediction method for the degree of asymmetry in the annular liquid film is proposed that outperforms existing correlations. Flow pattern maps for horizontal gas–liquid two-phase flow of frequent use in the design of evaporators and condensers can thus be explicitly updated to account for both symmetric and asymmetric annular flows. The underlying experimental database contains 184 measured liquid film circumferential profiles, corresponding to 1276 local liquid film thickness measurements collected from 15 different literature studies for tube diameters from 8.15 mm to 95.3 mm.  相似文献

This paper is a continuation of the authors’ previous work. Two-phase air–water flow experiments are performed in a horizontal circular micro-channel. The test section is made of a fused silica tube with an inner diameter of 0.15 mm and a length of 104 mm. The flow phenomena, which are liquid/unstable annular alternating flow (LUAAF), liquid/annular alternating flow (LAAF), and annular flow, are observed and recorded by a high-speed camera mounted together with a stereozoom microscope. A flow pattern map is presented in terms of the phase superficial velocities and is compared with those of other researchers obtained from different working fluids. Image analysis is performed to determine the void fraction, which increases non-linearly with increasing volumetric quality. It is revealed that the two-phase frictional multiplier data show a dependence on flow pattern rather than mass flux. Based on the present data, a new pressure drop correlation is proposed for practical applications. According to the present study, in general the data for the two-phase air–water flow characteristics are found to comply with those of working fluids other than air–water mixtures.  相似文献

The two-phase flow of a hydrophobic ionic liquid and water was studied in capillaries made of three different materials (two types of Teflon, FEP and Tefzel, and glass) with sizes between 200 μm and 270 μm. The ionic liquid was 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}amide, with density and viscosity of 1420 kg m−3 and 0.041 kg m−1 s−1, respectively. Flow patterns and pressure drop were measured for two inlet configurations (T- and Y-junction), for total flow rates of 0.065–214.9 cm3 h−1 and ionic liquid volume fractions from 0.05 to 0.8. The continuous phase in the glass capillary depended on the fluid that initially filled the channel. When water was introduced first, it became the continuous phase with the ionic liquid forming plugs or a mixture of plugs and drops within it. In the Teflon microchannels, the order that fluids were introduced did not affect the results and the ionic liquid was always the continuous phase. The main patterns observed were annular, plug, and drop flow. Pressure drop in the Teflon microchannels at a constant ionic liquid flow rate, was found to increase as the ionic liquid volume fraction decreased, and was always higher than the single phase ionic liquid value at the same flow rate as in the two-phase mixture. However, in the glass microchannel during plug flow with water as the continuous phase, pressure drop for a constant ionic liquid flow rate was always lower than the single phase ionic liquid value. A modified plug flow pressure drop model using a correlation for film thickness derived for the current fluids pair showed very good agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献

In the present study, new experimental data are presented for literature on the prediction of film thickness and identification of flow regime during the co-current downward condensation in a vertical smooth copper tube having an inner diameter of 8.1 mm and a length of 500 mm. R134a and water are used as working fluids in the tube side and annular side of a double tube heat exchanger, respectively. Condensation experiments are done at mass fluxes of 300 and 515 kg m?2 s?1. The condensing temperatures are between 40 and 50 °C; heat fluxes are between 12.65 and 66.61 kW m?2. The average experimental heat transfer coefficient of the refrigerant HFC-134a is calculated by applying an energy balance based on the energy transferred from the test section. A mathematical model by Barnea et al. based on the momentum balance of liquid and vapor phases is used to determine the condensation film thickness of R134a. The comparative film thickness values are determined indirectly using relevant measured data together with various void fraction models and correlations reported in the open literature. The effects of heat flux, mass flux, and condensation temperature on the film thickness and condensation heat transfer coefficient are also discussed for the laminar and turbulent flow conditions. There is a good agreement between the film thickness results obtained from the theoretical model and those obtained from six of 35 void fraction models in the high mass flux region of R134a. In spite of their different valid conditions, six well-known flow regime maps from the literature are found to be predictive for the annular flow conditions in the test tube in spite of their different operating conditions.  相似文献

The present study reports the hydrodynamics of the rivulet pattern during oil–water flow through a 12 mm horizontal acrylic pipe. The interfacial distribution has been observed visually and characterized from signals obtained from an optical probe as well as by isokinetic sampling. The probability density function (PDF) and fast Fourier transform (FFT) of the signals have provided an understanding of the flow configuration. The experiments have revealed that although rivulet flow is a typical separated flow pattern, it has different characteristics as compared to the stratified and annular flow patterns. The holdup and pressure drop under such conditions have been compared with the drift flux model for horizontal flow as well as the two-fluid model as proposed by Brauner and Maron [9] for liquid–liquid flows.  相似文献

The void fraction and the pressure waves in an air–water mixture flowing in the slug regime are experimentally investigated in a horizontal line. The test section is made of a transparent Plexiglas pipe with 26 mm ID and 26.24 m long, operating at ambient temperature and pressure. The flow induced transients are made by quickly changing the air or the water inlet velocity. The test grid has four operational points. This choice allows one to create expansion and compression waves due to the changes to the gas or to the liquid. Each experimental run is repeated 100 times to extract an ensemble average capable of filtering out the intrinsic flow intermittence and disclosing the void fraction and pressure waves’ features. The slug flow properties such as the bubble nose translational velocity, the lengths of liquid film underneath the bubble and the liquid slug are also measured. The objective of the work is two-fold: access the main characteristics of the void fraction and pressure waves and disclose the mechanics of the transient slug flow as described through the changes of the slug flow properties.  相似文献

Heat transfer, pressure drop, and void fraction were simultaneously measured for upward heated air–water non-boiling two-phase flow in 0.51 mm ID tube to investigate thermo–hydro dynamic characteristics of two-phase flow in micro-channels. At low liquid superficial velocity jl frictional pressure drop agreed with Mishima–Hibiki’s correlation, whereas agreed with Chisholm–Laird’s correlation at relatively high jl. Void fraction was lower than the homogeneous model and conventional empirical correlations. To interpret the decrease of void fraction with decrease of tube diameter, a relation among the void fraction, pressure gradient and tube diameter was derived. Heat transfer coefficient fairly agreed with the data for 1.03 and 2.01 mm ID tubes when jl was relatively high. But it became lower than that for larger diameter tubes when jl was low. Analogy between heat transfer and frictional pressure drop was proved to hold roughly for the two-phase flow in micro-channel. But satisfactory relation was not obtained under the condition of low liquid superficial velocity.  相似文献

The rapid development of two-phase microfluidic devices has triggered the demand for a detailed understanding of the flow characteristics inside microchannel heat sinks to advance the cooling process of micro-electronics. The present study focuses on the experimental investigation of pressure drop characteristics and flow visualization of a two-phase flow in a silicon microchannel heat sink. The microchannel heat sink consists of a rectangular silicon chip in which 45 rectangular microchannels were chemically etched with a depth of 276 μm, width of 225 μm, and a length of 16 mm. Experiments are carried out for mass fluxes ranging from 341 to 531 kg/m2 s and heat fluxes from 60.4 to 130.6 kW/m2 using FC-72 as the working fluid. Bubble growth and flow regimes are observed using high speed visualization. Three major flow regimes are identified: bubbly, slug, and annular. The frictional two-phase pressure drop increases with exit quality for a constant mass flux. An assessment of various pressure drop correlations reported in the literature is conducted for validation. A new general correlation is developed to predict the two-phase pressure drop in microchannel heat sinks for five different refrigerants. The experimental pressure drops for laminar-liquid laminar-vapor and laminar-liquid turbulent-vapor flow conditions are predicted by the new correlation with mean absolute errors of 10.4% and 14.5%, respectively.  相似文献

Experimental data are reported for condensation of R134a in an 8.38 mm inner diameter smooth tube in inclined orientations with a mass flux of 200 kg/m2 s. Under these conditions, the flow is stratified and there is an optimum inclination angle, which leads to the highest heat transfer coefficient. There is a need for a model to better understand and predict the flow behaviour. In this paper, the state of the art of existing models of stratified two-phase flows in inclined tubes is presented, whereafter a new mechanistic model is proposed. The liquid–vapour distribution in the tube is determined by taking into account the gravitational and the capillary forces. The comparison between the experimental data and the model prediction showed a good agreement in terms of heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops. The effect of the interface curvature on the heat transfer coefficient has been quantified and has been found to be significant. The optimum inclination angle is due to a balance between an increase of the void fraction and an increase in the falling liquid film thickness when the tube is inclined downwards. The effect of the mass flux and the vapour quality on the optimum inclination angle has also been studied.  相似文献

In this paper we focus on the impact of varying the aspect ratio of rectangular microchannels, on the overall pressure drop involving water boiling. An integrated system comprising micro-heaters, sensors and microchannels has been realized on (1 1 0) silicon wafers, following CMOS compatible process steps. Rectangular microchannels were fabricated with varying aspect ratios (width [W] to depth [H]) but constant hydraulic diameter of 142 ± 2 μm and length of 20 mm. The invariant nature of the hydraulic diameter is confirmed through two independent means: physical measurements using profilometer and by measuring the pressure drop in single-phase fluid flow. The experimental results show that the pressure drop for two-phase flow in rectangular microchannels experiences minima at an aspect ratio of about 1.6. The minimum is possibly due to opposing trends of frictional and acceleration pressure drops, with respect to aspect ratio. In a certain heat flux and mass flux range, it is observed that the two-phase pressure drop is lower than the corresponding single-phase value. This is the first study to investigate the effect of aspect ratio in two-phase flow in microchannels, to the best of our knowledge. The results are in qualitative agreement with annular flow model predictions. These results improve the possibility of designing effective heat-sinks based on two-phase fluid flow in microchannels.  相似文献

The present paper is the part I of a broad study concerning void fraction and pressure drop for air-water upward external flow across tube bundles. Experimental results were obtained for liquid and gas superficial velocities ranging from 0.02 to 1.50 m/s and 0.20 to 10.00 m/s, respectively. Void fraction measurements were performed for bubbly flow using a capacitive probe. The test section consisted of a triangular tube bundle counting with 19 mm OD tube and transverse pitch of 24 mm. Initially, the paper describes the test facility and the data regression and experimental procedures. Then, the pressure drop and void fraction measurements are validated based on tests for single-phase flow and quiescent liquid conditions, respectively. Finally, the experimental data are presented and analyzed. In the second part of this study (Part II), a literature review on predictive methods for void fraction and pressure drop is presented. Additionally, these methods are compared with the database presented in Part I and new predictive methods for void fraction and frictional pressure drop are proposed.  相似文献

The pressure drop has a significant importance in multiphase flow systems. In this paper, the effect of the volumetric quality and mixture velocity on pressure drop of gas-liquid flow in horizontal pipes of different diameters are investigated experimentally and numerically. The experimental facility was designed and built to measure the pressure drop in three pipes of 12.70, 19.05 and 25.40 mm. The water and air flow rates can be adjusted to control the mixture velocity and void fraction. The measurements are performed under constant water flow rate (CWF) by adding air to the water and constant total flow rate (CTF) in which the flow rates for both phases are changed to give same CTF. The drift-flux model is also used to predict the pressure drop for same cases. The present data is also compared with a number of empirical models from the literature. The results show that: i) the pressure drop increases with higher volumetric qualities for the cases of constant water flow rate but decreases for higher volumetric qualities of constant total flow rate due to the change in flow pattern. ii) The drift-flux model and homogenous model are the most suitable models for pressure drop prediction.  相似文献

This paper provides a qualitative visual observation of the two-phase flow patterns for HFO-1234yf and R-134a during downward flow in a vertical 6.7 mm inner diameter glass return bend. The different flow regimes observed are: slug, intermittent and annular flows. Bubble and vapor slug dynamical behaviors in downward slug flow are reported for HFO-1234yf. In addition, to determine the perturbation lengths up- and downstream of the return bend, the total pressure drop has been measured at different pressure tap location up- and downstream of the singularity. Furthermore, 285 pressure drop data points measured for two-phase flow of HFO-1234yf, R-134a and R-410A in vertical downward flow return bends are presented. The flow behavior in the return bend, which is subjected to the complex combined actions of gravity and centrifugal force was expressed in terms of the vapor Froude number. This experimental pressure drop database, which is included in the appendix, is compared to four well-known prediction methods available in the literature.  相似文献

An optical method is developed for a 2.95 mm inner diameter circular mini-channel to estimate liquid film thicknesses. The greyscale pictures obtained with a high-speed camera are processed to determine the liquid-vapour interface positions for annular and intermittent flows. The experiments are thus performed for a large range of flow conditions. The saturation temperatures tested ranged from 20°C to 100°C in steps of 10°C and the mass velocities are 50, 100, 200, 300 and 400 kg m−2 s−1. A new parameter ranging from 0 to 1, the symmetry, is defined to account for the level of non uniformity of liquid distribution around the tube perimeter. New experimental data are presented (270 data points), that cover a range of symmetry parameter from 0.35 to 1.00. These data are merged with those available in the literature (406 data points with symmetry parameter from 0.71 to 1.00). A sensitivity analysis of the dimensionless numbers of major influence is run and a new correlation is proposed, that enables to predict over 90% of the data points in an error bandwidth of 10%. This correlation is proposed as criterion for asymmetry.  相似文献

In the work an approach to avoid a circumferential temperature distribution existing during nucleate pool boiling on a horizontal cylinder within low heat flux densities is presented. The idea of the approach is local heat transfer enhancement by a porous layer application on a part of the heating surface. An experiment on nucleate pool boiling heat transfer from horizontal cylinders to saturated R141b and water under atmospheric pressure is reported. Experiments have been conducted using stainless steel tubes with the outside diameter between 8 mm and 23 mm with the active length of 250 mm. The outside surface of the tubes was smooth or partially coated with a porous metallic layer. In particular, measurements of inside circumferential temperature distribution have been performed.  相似文献

Pipeline slurry flow of mono-dispersed particles through horizontal bend is numerically simulated by implementing Eulerian two-phase model in FLUENT software. A hexagonal shape and Cooper type non-uniform three-dimensional grid is chosen to discretize the entire computational domain, and a control volume finite difference method is used to solve the governing equations. The modeling results are compared with the experimental data collected in 53.0 mm diameter horizontal bend with radius of 148.4 mm for concentration profiles and pressure drops. Experiments are performed on narrow-sized silica sand with mean diameter of 450 μm and for flow velocity up to 3.56 m/s (namely, 1.78, 2.67 and 3.56 m/s) and four efflux concentrations up to 16.28% (namely, 0%, 3.94%, 8.82% and 16.28%) by volume for each velocity. Eulerian model gives fairly accurate predictions for both the pressure drop and concentration profiles at all efflux concentrations and flow velocities.  相似文献

The Super-Critical Water-Cooled Reactor (SCWR) has been chosen by the Generation IV International Forum as one of the candidates for the next generation nuclear reactors. Heat transfer to water from a fuel assembly may deteriorate at certain supercritical pressure flow conditions and its estimation at degraded conditions as well as in normal conditions is very important to the design of a safe and reliable reactor core. Extensive experiments on a heat transfer to a vertically upward flowing CO2 at a supercritical pressure in tubes and an annular channel have been performed. The geometries of the test sections include tubes of an internal diameter (ID) of 4.4 and 9.0 mm and an annular channel (8 × 10 mm). The heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and Nusselt numbers were derived from the inner wall temperature converted by using the outer wall temperature measured by adhesive K-type thermocouples and a direct (tube) or indirect (annular channel) electric heating power. From the test results, a correlation, which covers both a deteriorated and a normal heat transfer regime, was developed. The developed correlation takes different forms in each interval divided by the value of parameter Bu. The parameter Bu (referred to as Bu hereafter), a function of the Grashof number, the Reynolds number and the Prandtl number, was introduced since it is known to be a controlling factor for the occurrence of a heat transfer deterioration due to a buoyancy effect. The developed correlation predicted the HTCs for water and HCFC-22 fairly well.  相似文献

This paper proposes a new method for equal quality distribution of gas–liquid two-phase flow by partial separate-phase distribution with a dual-header distributor. The upper and liquid (lower) headers are interconnected with five vertical downward arms. A gas–liquid two-phase mixture enters the distributor from the upper header where most of the liquid of the mixture is removed through the downward arms into the liquid header. Hence, firstly, the remaining gas-rich fluid can be uniformly distributed into the outlet branches, and then secondly, the liquid collected in the liquid header can be uniformly re-distributed into the individual outlet branches. Because both distribution processes are conducted in the condition of single or near single-phase flow, mal-distribution of the two-phase flow is essentially eliminated, and a satisfactory equal quality distribution of gas–liquid two-phase flow is reached. Experiments were conducted in an air–water two-phase flow test loop. The inner diameter of the inlet pipe was 60 mm, the superficial velocity ranges of gas and liquid were 3–32 m/s and 0.02–0.17 m/s respectively, and the quality ranged from 0.02 to 0.44. The flow pattern in the inlet pipe included stratified flow, wavy stratified, slug flow, and annular flow. The experimental results showed that this new method could significantly improve the distribution performance of the two-phase flow. The maximum quality deviation between each outlet branch and the inlet pipe is less than ±1% under the conditions of stratified, wavy stratified and slug flows in the upper header, and less than ±5% in annular flow.  相似文献

Boiling/evaporation heat transfer in a microchannel with pin fin structure was performed with water as the working fluid. Simultaneous measurements of various parameters were performed. The chip wall temperatures were measured by a high spatial-time resolution IR image system, having a sensitivity of 0.02 °C. The flow pattern variations synchronously changed wall temperatures due to ultra-small Bi number. The wavelet decomposition method successfully identified the noise signal and decoupled various temperature oscillations with different amplitudes and frequencies. Three types of temperature oscillations were identified according to heat flux q and mass flux G. The first type of oscillation occurred at q/G < 0.62 kJ/kg. The approximation coefficient of wavelet decomposition decided the dominant cycle period which was ∼3 times of the fluid residence time in the microchannel, behaving the density wave oscillation characteristic. The detail coefficients of wavelet decomposition decided the dominant cycle period, which matched the flow pattern transition determined value well, representing the flow pattern transition induced oscillation. For the second type of oscillation, the wavelet decomposition decoupled the three oscillation mechanisms. The pressure drop oscillation caused the temperature oscillation amplitudes of 5–10 °C and cycle periods of 10–15 s. The density wave oscillation and flow pattern transition induced oscillation are embedded with both the pressure rise and decrease stages of the pressure drop oscillation. The third type of oscillation happened at q/G > 1.13 kJ/kg, having the density wave oscillation coupled with the varied liquid film evaporation induced oscillation. The liquid island, retention bubble induced nucleation sites and cone-shape two-phase developing region are unique features of microchannel boiling with pin fin structure. This study illustrated that pressure drop oscillation and density wave oscillation, usually happened in large size channels, also take place in microchannels. The flow pattern transition and varied liquid film evaporation induced oscillations are specific to microchannel boiling/evaporation flow.  相似文献

Based on experimental investigations the present study evaluates instability and heat transfer phenomenon under condition of periodic flow boiling of water and ethanol in parallel triangular micro-channels. Tests were performed in the range of hydraulic diameter 100–220 μm, mass flux 32–200 kg/m2 s, heat flux 120–270 kW/m2, vapor quality x = 0.01–0.08. The period between successive events depends on the boiling number and decreases with an increase in the boiling number. The initial film thickness decreases with increasing heat flux. When the liquid film reached the minimum initial film thickness CHF regime occurred. Temporal variations of pressure drop, fluid and heater temperatures were periodic. Oscillation frequency is the same for the pressure drop, for the fluid temperature at the outlet manifold, and for the mean and maximum heater temperature fluctuations. All these fluctuations are in phase. The CHF phenomenon is different from that observed in a single channel of conventional size. A key difference between micro-channel heat sink and single conventional channel is amplification of parallel-channel instability prior to CHF. The dimensionless experimental values of the heat transfer coefficient are presented as the Nusselt number dependence on the Eotvos number and the boiling number.  相似文献
