We show that a separable Banach space with property (M*) has a Szlenk index equal to ω0, and a norm with an optimal modulus of asymptotic uniform smoothness. From this we derive a condition on the Szlenk functions of the space and its dual which characterizes embeddability into c 0 or an ℓ p -sum of finite dimensional spaces. We also prove that two Lipschitz-isomorphic Orlicz sequence spaces contain the same ℓ p -spaces.   相似文献

For 1 ≤p ≤ ∞ we show that there are no denting points in the unit ball of ℓ(lp). This extends a result recently proved by Grząślewicz and Scherwentke whenp = 2 [GS1]. We also show that for any Banach spaceX and for any measure space (Ω, A, μ), the unit ball of ℓ(L 1 (μ), X) has denting points iffL 1(μ) is finite dimensional and the unit ball ofX has a denting point. We also exhibit other classes of Banach spacesX andY for which the unit ball of ℓ(X, Y) has no denting points. When X* has the extreme point intersection property, we show that all ‘nice’ operators in the unit ball of ℓ(X, Y) are strongly extreme points.  相似文献

An elementary proof of the (known) fact that each element of the Banach space w p (X) of weakly absolutelyp-summable sequences (if 1≤p<∞) in the Banach spaceX is the norm limit of its sections if and only if each element of w p (X) is a norm null sequence inX, is given. Little modification to this proof leads to a similar result for a family of Orlicz sequence spaces. We introduce and study the following modified version of the Invariant Subspace Problem: whether every operator T on an infinite-dimensional Banach space has an almost invariant half-space, that is, a subspace Y of infinite dimension and infinite codimension such that Y is of finite codimension in T(Y). We solve this problem in the affirmative for a large class of operators which includes quasinilpotent weighted shift operators on ℓp (1 ≤ p < ∞) or c0.  相似文献

Let B w (ℓ p ) denote the space of infinite matrices A for which A(x) ∈ ℓ p for all x = {x k } k=1 ∈ ℓ p with |x k | ↘ 0. We characterize the upper triangular positive matrices from B w (ℓ p ), 1 < p < ∞, by using a special kind of Schur multipliers and the G. Bennett factorization technique. Given a frame F = {f j } for a separable Hilbert space H, we introduce the linear subspace HpFH^{p}_{F} of H consisting of elements whose frame coefficient sequences belong to the ℓ p -space, where 1 ≤ p < 2. Our focus is on the general theory of these spaces, and we investigate different aspects of these spaces in relation to reconstructions, p-frames, realizations and dilations. In particular we show that for closed linear subspaces of H, only finite dimensional ones can be realized as HpFH^{p}_{F}-spaces for some frame F. We also prove that with a mild decay condition on the frame F the frame expansion of any element in HFpH_{F}^{p} converges in both the Hilbert space norm and the ||·|| F, p -norm which is induced by the ℓ p -norm.  相似文献

Let X denote a specific space of the class of X α,p Banach sequence spaces which were constructed by Hagler and the first named author as classes of hereditarily ℓp Banach spaces. We show that for p > 1 the Banach space X contains asymptotically isometric copies of ℓp. It is known that any member of the class is a dual space. We show that the predual of X contains isometric copies of ℓp where 1/p + 1/q = 1. For p = 1 it is known that the predual of the Banach space X contains asymptotically isometric copies of c 0. Here we give a direct proof of the known result that X contains asymptotically isometric copies of ℓ1.  相似文献

LetY be a Banach space, 1<p<∞. We give a simple criterion for embedding ℓ p Y, namely it suffices that the positive cone ℓ p +Y. This result is applied to the study of highly smooth operators from ℓ p intoY (p is not an even integer). A well known argument of James yields that if a Banach spaceX contains ℓ 1 n ’s uniformly, thenX contains ℓ 1 n ’s almost isometrically. In the first half of the paper we extend this idea to the ordinal ℓ1-indices of Bourgain. In the second half we use our results to calculate the ℓ1-index of certain Banach spaces. Furthermore we show that the ℓ1-index of a separable Banach space not containing ℓ1 must be of the form ωα for some countable ordinal α. Research supported by the NSF and TARP.  相似文献

We study the setP X of scalarsp such thatL p is lattice-isomorphically embedded into a given rearrangement invariant (r.i.) function spaceX[0, 1]. Given 0<αβ<∞, we construct a family of Orlicz function spacesX=L F [0, 1], with Boyd indicesα andβ, whose associated setsP X are the closed intervals [γ, β], for everyγ withαγβ. In particular forα>2, this proves the existence of separable 2-convex r.i. function spaces on [0,1] containing isomorphically scales ofL p -spaces for different values ofp. We also show that, in general, the associated setP X is not closed. Similar questions in the setting of Banach spaces with uncountable symmetric basis are also considered. Thus, we construct a family of Orlicz spaces ℓ F (I), with symmetric basis and indices fixed in advance, containing ℓ p (Γ-subspaces for differentp’s and uncountable Λ⊂I. In contrast with the behavior in the countable case (Lindenstrauss and Tzafriri [L-T1]), we show that the set of scalarsp for which ℓ p (Γ) is isomorphic to a subspace of a given Orlicz space ℓ F (I) is not in general closed. We study hypercyclicity and supercyclicity of weighted shifts on ℓ, with respect to the weak * topology. We show that there exist bilateral shifts that are weak * hypercyclic but fail to be weak * sequentially hypercyclic. In the unilateral case, a shift T is weak * hypercyclic if and only if it is weak * sequentially hypercyclic, and this is equivalent to T being either norm, weak, or weak-sequentially hypercyclic on c0 or ℓp (1 ≤ p < ∞). We also show that the set of weak * hypercyclic vectors of any unilateral or bilateral shift on ℓ is norm nowhere dense. Finally, we show that ℓ supports an isometry that is weak * sequentially supercyclic.  相似文献

A version of Grothendieck’s inequality says that any bounded linear operator acting from a Banach lattice X to a Banach lattice Y acts from X(ℓ2) to Y (ℓ2) as well. A similar statement is proved for Hardy-type subspaces in lattices of measurable functions. Namely, let X be a Banach lattice of measurable functions on the circle, and let an operator T act from the corresponding subspace of analytic functions XA to a Banach lattice Y or, if Y is also a lattice of measurable functions on the circle, to the quotient space Y/YA. Under certain mild conditions on the lattices involved, it is proved that T induces an operator acting from XA(ℓ2) to Y (ℓ2) or to Y/YA(ℓ2), respectively. We prove that a Banach space X is not super-reflexive if and only if the hyperbolic infinite tree embeds metrically into X. We improve one implication of J.Bourgain’s result who gave a metrical characterization of super-reflexivity in Banach spaces in terms of uniform embeddings of the finite trees. A characterization of the linear type for Banach spaces is given using the embedding of the infinite tree equipped with the metrics d p induced by the p norms. We say that a Banach space X satisfies the “descent spectrum equality” (in short, DSE) whenever, for every bounded linear operator T on X, the descent spectrum of T as an operator coincides with the descent spectrum of T as an element of the algebra of all bounded linear operators on X. We prove that the DSE is fulfilled by ℓ1, all Hilbert spaces, and all Banach spaces which are not isomorphic to any of their proper quotients (so, in particular, by the hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces [8]), but not by ℓ p , for 1 < p ≤ ∞ with p ≠ 2. Actually, a Banach space is not isomorphic to any of its proper quotients if and only if it is not isomorphic to any of its proper complemented subspaces and satisfies the DSE.  相似文献

Complex functions χ(m) where m belongs to a Galois field GF(p ), are considered. Fourier transforms, displacements in the GF(p GF(p ) phase space and symplectic transforms of these functions are studied. It is shown that the formalism inherits many features from the theory of Galois fields. For example, Frobenius transformations and Galois groups are introduced in the present context. The relationship between harmonic analysis on GF(p ) and harmonic analysis on its subfields, is studied.   相似文献
