This work aims to develop novel composites from a poly(L ‐lactide‐co‐trimethylene carbonate‐co‐glycolide) (PLTG) terpolymer and mesoporous silica (SBA‐15) nanofillers surface modified by post‐synthetic functionalization. SBA‐15 first reacts with a silane coupling agent, γ‐aminopropyl‐trimethoxysilane to introduce ammonium group. PLLA chains were then grafted on the surface of SBA‐15 through ammonium initiated ring‐opening polymerization of L ‐lactide. Composites were prepared via solution mixing of PLTG terpolymer and surface modified SBA‐15. The structures and properties of pure SBA‐15, γ‐aminopropyl‐trimethoxysilane modified SBA‐15 (H2N‐SBA‐15), PLLA modified SBA‐15 (PLLA‐NH‐SBA‐15), and PLTG/PLLA‐NH‐SBA‐15 composites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, N2 adsorption‐desorption, differential scanning calorimetry, contact angle measurement, and mechanical testing. The results demonstrated that PLLA chains were successfully grafted onto the surface of SBA‐15 with grafting amounts up to 16 wt.%. The PLTG/PLLA‐NH‐SBA‐15 composites exhibit good mechanical properties. The tensile strength, Young's modulus, and elongation at break of the composite containing 5 wt.% of PLLA‐NH‐SBA‐15 were 39.9 MPa, 1.3 GPa, and 273.6%, respectively, which were all higher than those of neat PLTG or of the composite containing 5 wt.% of pure SBA‐15. Cytocompatibility tests showed that the composites present very low cytotoxicity.  相似文献

This work aims to evaluate the potential of a bioresorbable composite as material for bone regeneration. Surface‐modified calcium carbonate whiskers (CCWs) were prepared by grafting of ethylene glycol (EG) using 1,6‐hexamethylene diisocyanate as coupling agent, followed by ring‐opening polymerization of l ‐lactide initiated by the hydroxyl group of EG. The resulting PLLA‐EG‐g‐CCW was used as filler to reinforce a bioresorbable terpolymer, poly(l ‐lactide‐co‐trimethylene carbonate‐co‐glycolide) (PLTG). The mechanical properties and thermal stability of the PLTG/PLLA‐EG‐g‐CCW composites were greatly improved. Compared with neat PLTG, a 39.3% increase in tensile strength and 26.7% increase in elongation at break were obtained for the composite with 2 wt% PLLA‐EG‐g‐CCW filler. This was assigned to the reinforcement effect of evenly dispersed PLLA‐EG‐g‐CCW in the polymeric matrix. In fact, entanglement of PLLA grafts at the surface of PLLA‐EG‐g‐CCW with PLTG chains results in a homogeneous distribution of the filler in the matrix. Thus, the composites are simultaneously strengthened and toughened. The cytocompatibility of the materials was evaluated from cell morphology and 3‐(4,5‐dimethylthiazol‐2‐yl)‐2,5‐diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay using L929 mouse fibroblast cell line. The results indicate that the composite presents very low cytotoxicity. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Novel and well‐defined amphiphilic H‐shaped terpolymers poly(L‐lactide)‐block‐(poly(2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) ‐block‐)poly(ε‐caprolactone)(‐block‐poly(2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)) ‐b‐poly(L‐lactide) (PLLA‐b‐(PDMAEMA‐b‐)PCL(‐b‐PDMAEMA)‐b‐PLLA) were synthesized by the combination of ring‐opening polymerization, atom transfer radical polymerization, and click chemistry. The H‐shaped amphiphilic terpolymers can self‐assemble into spherical nano‐micelles in water. Because of the dually responsive (temperature and pH) properties of PDMAEMA segments, the hydrodynamic radius of the micelles of the H‐shaped terpolymer solution can be adjusted by altering the environmental temperature or pH values. The thermal properties investigation and the crystalline morphology analysis indicate that the branched structure of the H‐shaped terpolymers and the presence of amorphous PDMAEMA segments together led to the obvious decrease of PCL segments and the complete destruction of crystallinity of the PLLA segments in the H‐shaped terpolymers. In addition, the H‐shaped terpolymer film has better hydrophilicity than linear PCL or triblock polymer of PLLA‐b‐(N3? )PCL(? N3)‐b‐PLLA, due to the decrease or destruction of the crystallizability of the PCL or PLLA in the H‐shaped terpolymer and the presence of hydrophilic PDMAEMA segments. These unique H‐shaped amphiphilic terpolymers composed of biodegradable and biocompatible PCL and PLLA components and intelligent and biocompatible PDMAEMA component will have the potential applications in biomedical fields. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work reported a novel composite fiber membrane containing poly(1actic‐co‐glycolic acid)/six‐armed poly(ε‐caprolactone)/hydroxylapatite‐grafted poly(l ‐lactide)/Pluronic F‐108 (PLGA/SAPCL/HA‐g‐PLLA/PF‐108) produced by electrospinning. SAPCL, HA‐g‐PLLA, and PF‐108 could be well blended with PLGA to make fibers. Fibrous surface and diameter had little difference in morphology with the change of fibrous component. Compared with simple PLGA, PLGA/SAPCL, or PLGA/SAPCL/HA‐g‐PLLA fiber membrane, the quaternary composites not only showed the improved mechanics stability but also possessed better hydrophilicity. The quaternary membrane was conductive to accelerate degradation and maintained nice bioactivity. It was not cytotoxicity. These results suggest that the composite fiber membrane may be qualified as guided bone regeneration substrate. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

To obtain an effective compatibilizer for the blends of poly(L‐lactide) (PLLA) and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL), the diblock copolymers PCL‐b‐PLLA with different ratios of PCL/PLLA (CL/LA) and different molecular weights (Mn) were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of L‐lactide with monohydric poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL‐OH) as a macro‐initiator. These copolymers were melt blended with PLLA/PCL (80/20) blend at contents between 3.0 and 20 phr (parts per hundred resin), and the effects of added PCL‐b‐PLLA on the mechanical, morphological, rheological, and thermodynamic properties of the PLLA/PCL/PCL‐b‐PLLA blends were investigated. The compatibility between PLLA matrix and PCL phase was enhanced with decreasing in CL/LA ratios or increasing in Mn for the added PCL‐b‐PLLA. Moreover, the crystallinity of PLLA matrix increased because of the added compatibilizers. The PCL‐b‐PLLA with the ratio of CL/LA (50/50) and Mn ≥ 39.0 kg/mol were effective compatibilizers for PLLA/PCL blends. When the content of PCL‐b‐PLLA is greater than or equal to 5 phr, the elongations at break of the PLLA/PCL/PCL‐b‐PLLA blends all reached approximately 180%, about 25 times more than the pristine PLLA/PCL(80/20) blend.  相似文献

Because poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) is a biodegradable polyester with low immunogenicity and good biocompatibility, it is used as a biomaterial. However, hydrophobic PLLA does not have any reactive groups. Thus, its application is limited. To increase the hydrophilicity of PLLA and accelerate its degradation rate, functionalized pendant groups and blocks were introduced through copolymerization with citric acid and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), respectively. This article describes the synthesis and characterization of poly(L ‐lactic‐co‐citric acid) (PLCA)‐PLLA and PLCA‐PEG multiblock copolymers. The results indicated that the hydrolysis rate was enhanced, and the hydrophilicity was improved because of the incorporation of carboxyl groups in PLCA‐PLLA. The joining of the PEG block led to improved hydrophilicity of PLCA, and the degradation rate of PLCA‐PEG accelerated as compared with that of PLCA‐PLLA. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA)/poly(butylene succinate‐co‐butylene adipate) (PBSA) blends were compounded with Cloisite 25A® (C25A) and C25A functionalized with epoxy groups, respectively. Epoxy groups on the surface of C25A were introduced by treating C25A with (glycidoxypropyl)trimethoxy silane (GPS) to produce so called Twice Functionalized Organoclay (TFC). Variation of morphology and properties of PLLA/PBSA/C25A composites was investigated before and after the treatment with GPS. The morphological structure of the composites was analyzed by using X‐ray diffractometry (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The silicate layers of PLLA/PBSA/TFC were exfoliated to a larger extent than PLLA/PBSA/C25A. Incorporation of the epoxy groups on C25A improved significantly elongation at break as well as tensile modulus and tensile strength of PLLA/PBSA/C25A. The larger amount of exfoliation of the silicate layers in PLLA/PBSA/TFC as compared with that in PLLA/PBSA/C25A was attributed to the increased interfacial interaction between the polyesters and the clay due to chemical reaction. Thermo gravimetric analysis revealed that both T5%, which was the temperature corresponding to 5% weight loss, and activation energy of thermal decomposition of PLLA/PBSA/TFC were far superior to those of PLLA/PBSA/C25A as well as to those of PLLA/PBSA, indicating that the composites with exfoliated silicate layers were more thermally stable than those with intercalated silicate layers. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Ethylene glycol (EG) initiated, hydroxyl‐telechelic poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) was employed as a macroinitiator in the presence of a stannous octoate catalyst in the ring‐opening polymerization of 5‐methyl‐5‐benzyloxycarbonyl‐1,3‐dioxan‐2‐one (MBC) with the goal of creating A–B–A‐type block copolymers having polycarbonate outer blocks and a polyester center block. Because of transesterification reactions involving the PLLA block, multiblock copolymers of the A–(B–A)n–B–A type were actually obtained, where A is poly(5‐methyl‐5‐benzyloxycarbonyl‐1,3‐dioxan‐2‐one), B is PLLA, and n is greater than 0. 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy of the product copolymers yielded evidence of the multiblock structure and provided the lactide sequence length. For a PLLA macroinitiator with a number‐average molecular weight of 2500 g/mol, the product block copolymer had an n value of 0.8 and an average lactide sequence length (consecutive C6H8O4 units uninterrupted by either an EG or MBC unit) of 6.1. For a PLLA macroinitiator with a number‐average molecular weight of 14,400 g/mol, n was 18, and the average lactide sequence length was 5.0. Additional evidence of the block copolymer architecture was revealed through the retention of PLLA crystallinity as measured by differential scanning calorimetry and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. Multiblock copolymers with PLLA crystallinity could be achieved only with isolated PLLA macroinitiators; sequential addition of MBC to high‐conversion L ‐lactide polymerizations resulted in excessive randomization, presumably because of residual L ‐lactide monomer. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis by reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of three phosphonated terpolymers with tailored architecture has been studied. A phosphonated methacrylate (MAUPHOS) was copolymerized with vinylidene chloride (VC2) and methyl acrylate (MA) to prepare a gradient terpolymer poly(VC2co‐MA‐co‐MAUPHOS). Besides, hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) was used as a functional monomer in RAFT polymerization to prepare a statistical poly(VC2co‐MA‐co‐HEA) terpolymer and a diblock poly(VC2co‐MA)‐b‐poly(HEA) terpolymer. The HEA‐containing polymers were then modified with a phosphonated epoxide to introduce the phosphonated group. The control of the polymerization was proven by kinetic studies (evolution of molecular weight vs. conversion) and by a successful block copolymerization. The architecture of the terpolymers was determined by the reactivity ratios of the monomers: terpolymerization of VC2, MA, and HEA leading to an ideal statistical terpolymer (no composition drift) whereas terpolymerization of VC2, MA, and the phosphonated methacrylate led to a gradient terpolymer. These terpolymers were characterized by size exclusion chromatography, 31P NMR and differential scanning calorimetry. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Among three cyclopentadienyl titanium complexes studied, CpTiCl2(OEt), containing a 5% excess CpTiCl3, has proven to be a very efficient catalyst for the ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of L ‐lactide (LLA) in toluene at 130 °C. Kinetic studies revealed that the polymerization yield (up to 100%) and the molecular weight increase linearly with time, leading to well‐defined PLLA with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.1). Based on the above results, PS‐b‐PLLA, PI‐b‐PLLA, PEO‐b‐PLLA block copolymers, and a PS‐b‐PI‐b‐PLLA triblock terpolymer were synthesized. The synthetic strategy involved: (a) the preparation of OH‐end‐functionalized homopolymers or diblock copolymers by anionic polymerization, (b) the reaction of the OH‐functionalized polymers with CpTiCl3 to give the corresponding Ti‐macrocatalyst, and (c) the ROP of LLA to afford the final block copolymers. PMMA‐g‐PLLA [PMMA: poly(methyl methacrylate)] was also synthesized by: (a) the reaction of CpTiCl3 with 2‐hydroxy ethyl methacrylate, HEMA, to give the Ti‐HEMA‐catalyst, (b) the ROP of LLA to afford a PLLA methacrylic‐macromonomer, and (c) the copolymerization (conventional and ATRP) of the macromonomer with MMA to afford the final graft copolymer. Intermediate and final products were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography, equipped with refractive index and two‐angle laser light scattering detectors. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Films of poly(L ‐lactide‐co‐D ‐lactide) [P(LLA‐DLA); 95/5] and poly(L ‐lactide) [i.e., poly(L ‐lactide acid) (PLLA)] were prepared by crystallization from the melt, and a comparative study of the crystallization effects on the alkaline and proteinase K catalyzed hydrolysis of the films was carried out. The hydrolyzed films were investigated with gravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, polarimetry, and gel permeation chromatography, and the results were compared with those reported for amorphous‐made specimens. The alkaline hydrolyzability of the P(LLA‐DLA) (95/5) and PLLA films was determined solely by the initial crystallinity (Xc) and was not affected by the content of the incorporated D ‐lactide (DLA) unit in the polymer chain; this was in marked contrast to the fact that the enzymatic hydrolyzability depended on not only the initial Xc value but also the DLA unit content. The alkaline hydrolysis rate of the P(LLA‐DLA) (95/5) and PLLA films and the enzymatic hydrolysis rate (REH) of the P(LLA‐DLA) (95/5) films decreased linearly as the initial Xc value increased. This meant that the hydrolyzability of the restricted amorphous regions was very similar to that of the free amorphous regions. In contrast, REH of the PLLA films decreased nonlinearly with the initial Xc value, and this nonlinear dependence was caused by the fact that in the PLLA films the restricted amorphous regions were much more hydrolysis‐resistant than the free amorphous regions. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Block copolymers create various types of nano‐structures, e. g., spheres, rods, cubes, and lamellae. This review discloses the dynamic macromolecular organization of block copolymers comprising poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) and poly(oxyethylene) (PEG) that allows to simulate elaborate biological systems. The block copolymers, AB‐ (PLLA‐PEG) and ABA‐type (PLLA‐PEG‐PLLA), are synthesized by ordinary lactide polymerization to have a controlled block length. They are dispersed into an aqueous medium to prepare nano‐scale particles, consisting of hydrophobic PLLA and hydrophilic PEG in the core and shell, respectively. Then, the particles are placed on a flat substrate by the casting method. The particles are detected as discoids by AFM, having shrunk with loss of water. Heat‐treatment of these particles at 60°C (above Tg of PLLA) gives rise to a collapse into small fragments, which then aggregate into bands with nano‐size width and thickness. The PLLA‐PEG bands align parallel to each other, while the PLLA‐PEG‐PLLA bands form a characteristic network resembling the neuron system created in animal tissue. As analyzed by TEM diffraction, each is composed of α‐crystal of PLLA whose c‐axis (molecular axis) is perpendicular to the substrate surface. Based on this fact, a doubly twisted chain structure of PLLA is proposed in addition to a plausible mechanism for the self‐organization of the block copolymers. Derivatives of the PLLA‐PEG block copolymers can form far more interesting nano‐architectures. An equimolar mixture of enantiomeric copolymers, PLLA‐PEG‐PLLA and PDLA‐PEG‐PDLA, forms a hydrogel that is thermo‐responsive. The terminal‐modified poly(L ‐lactide)‐block‐polyoxyethylene monocinnamate (PLLA‐PEG‐C) forms a highly stabilized nanofiber by the photo‐reaction of the cinnamates placed in the outer layer of the nanobands.  相似文献

Ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) has been the subject of much recent interest, although few publications describe the development of stabilizers to produce biodegradable particles of poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) and polyglycolide (PGA). Here we describe the synthesis of a series of novel fluorinated diblock copolymers by the acid‐catalyzed esterification of well‐defined blocks of polycaprolactone (PCL) with Krytox 157FSL, a carboxylic acid terminated perfluoropolyether. These diblock copolymers were then tested as stabilizers in the ROP of glycolide and L ‐lactide, or a mixture of the two, in scCO2, and this resulted in the corresponding homopolymers or random copolymers. In the absence of stabilizers, only aggregated solids were formed. When the reaction was repeated with a stabilizer, PGA and PLLA were obtained as discrete microparticles. The stabilizer efficiency increased as the length of the polymer‐philic PCL block increased. One optimized stabilizer worked at loadings as low as 3% (w/w) with respect to the monomer, demonstrating these to be extremely effective stabilizers. It was found that to produce microparticles with this process, the product polymers must be semicrystalline; amorphous polymers, such as poly(lactide‐co‐glycolide), are plasticized by scCO2 and yield only aggregated solids rather than discrete particles. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(L‐lactide) (PLLA) composites with TiO2‐g‐poly(D‐lactide) (PDLA), which was synthesized by surface‐initiated opening ring polymerization with TiO2 as initiator and Sn(Oct)2 as catalyst, were prepared by solution casting. The synthesized TiO2‐g‐PDLA was characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and dynamic laser scattering (DLS), showing larger size corresponding to that of TiO2. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR) and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements were further carried out and indicated that PDLA was grafted onto TiO2 through covalent bond. For PLLA/TiO2‐g‐PDLA composites, the stereocomplex crystallites were formed between PDLA grafted on the surface of TiO2 and the PLLA matrix, which was determined by FT‐IR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and X‐ray diffractometer (XRD). The influence of stereocomplex crystallites on the rheological behavior of PLLA/TiO2‐g‐PDLA was investigated by rheometer, which showed greater improvement of rheological properties compared to that of PLLA/TiO2 composites especially with a percolation content of TiO2‐g‐PDLA between 3 wt%–5 wt%. The crystallization and melting behavior of PLLA/TiO2‐g‐PDLA composites were studied by DSC under different thermal treatment conditions. The formed PLA stereocomplex network acted as nucleating agents and a special interphase on the functional surface of TiO2, which resulted in imperfect PLLA crystal with lower melting temperature. When the thermal treatment was close to the melting temperature of PLA stereocomplex, the crystallinity approached to the maximum. The isothermal crystallization study by polarizing microscope (POM) indicated that stereocomplex network presented stronger nucleation capacity than TiO2‐g‐PDLA. The blends of poly(1,3‐trimethylene carbonate‐b‐(l ‐lactide‐ran‐glycolide)) (PTLG) with poly(d ‐lactide) (PDLA) were prepared via solution‐casting method using CH2Cl2 as solvent. The poly(l ‐lactide) (PLLA) segments of PTLG with PDLA chain constructed as stereocomplex structures and growth stereocomplex crystals of PLA (sc‐PLA). The effects of sc‐PLA crystals on thermal behavior, mechanical properties, thermal decomposition of the PTLG/PDLA blends were investigated, respectively. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) results showed that the total crystallinity of the PTLG/PDLA blends was increased with the PDLA content increasing. Heterogeneous nucleation of sc‐PLA crystals induced crystallization of the PLLA segments in PTLG. The crystallization temperature of samples shifted to 107.5°C for the PTLG/PDLA‐20 blends compared with that of the PTLG matrix, and decreased the half‐time of crystallization. The mechanical measurement results indicated that the tensile strength of the PTLG/PDLA blends was improved from 21.1 MPa of the PTLG matrix to 39.5 MPa of PTLG/PDLA‐20 blends. The results of kinetics of thermal decomposition of the PTLG/PDLA blends by TGA showed that the apparent activation energy of the PTLG/PDLA blends was increased from 59.1 to 72.1 kJ/mol with the increasing of the PDLA content from 3 wt% to 20 wt%, which indicated the enhancement of thermal stability of the PTLG/PDLA blends by addition of PDLA. Furthermore, the biocompatibility of the PTLG/PDLA blends cultured with human adipose‐derived stem cells was evaluated by CCK‐8 and live/dead staining. The experiment results proved the PTLG/PDLA blends were a kind of biomaterial with excellent physical performances with very low cytotoxicity.  相似文献

Well‐defined poly(L ‐lactide)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PLLA‐b‐PEO) copolymers with different branch arms were synthesized via the controlled ring‐opening polymerization of L ‐lactide followed by a coupling reaction with carboxyl‐terminated poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO); these copolymers included both star‐shaped copolymers having four arms (4sPLLA‐b‐PEO) and six arms (6sPLLA‐b‐PEO) and linear analogues having one arm (LPLLA‐b‐PEO) and two arms (2LPLLA‐b‐PEO). The maximal melting point, cold‐crystallization temperature, and degree of crystallinity (Xc) of the poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) block within PLLA‐b‐PEO decreased as the branch arm number increased, whereas Xc of the PEO block within the copolymers inversely increased. This was mainly attributed to the relatively decreasing arm length ratio of PLLA to PEO, which resulted in various PLLA crystallization effects restricting the PEO block. These results indicated that both the PLLA and PEO blocks within the block copolymers mutually influenced each other, and the crystallization of both the PLLA and PEO blocks within the PLLA‐b‐PEO copolymers could be adjusted through both the branch arm number and the arm length of each block. Moreover, the spherulitic growth rate (G) decreased as the branch arm number increased: G6sPLLA‐b‐PEO < G4sPLLA‐b‐PEO < G2LPLLA‐b‐PEO < GLPLLA‐b‐PEO. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article reports the synthesis and the properties of novel thermoplastic elastomers of A‐B‐A type triblock copolymer structure, where the hard segment A is poly(l ‐lactide) (PLLA) and the soft segment B is poly(ε‐caprolactone‐stat‐d ,l ‐lactide) (P(CL‐stat‐DLLA)). The P(CL‐stat‐DLLA) block with DLLA content of 30 mol % was applied because of its amorphous nature and low glass transition temperature (Tg = approximately ?40 °C). Successive polymerization of l ‐lactide afforded PLLA‐block‐P(CL‐stat‐DLLA)‐block‐PLLAs, which exhibited melting temperature (Tm = approximately 150 °C) for the crystalline PLLA segments and still low Tg (approximately ?30 °C) of the soft segments. The triblock copolymers showed very high elongation at break up to approximately 2800% and elastic properties. The corresponding d ‐triblock copolymers, PDLA‐block‐P(CL‐stat‐DLLA)‐block‐PDLAs (PDLA = poly(d ‐lactide)) were also prepared with the same procedure using d ‐lactide in place of l ‐lactide. When the PLLA‐block‐P(CL‐stat‐DLLA)‐block‐PLLA was blended with PDLA‐block‐P(CL‐stat‐DLLA)‐block‐PDLA, stereocomplex crystals were formed to enhance their Tm as well as tensile properties. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An amphiphilic block copolymer, poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly(L ‐lactide‐co‐2‐methyl‐2‐benzoxycarbonyl‐propylene carbonate) [PEG‐b‐P(LA‐co‐MBC)], was synthesized in bulk by the ring‐opening polymerization of L ‐lactide with 2‐methyl‐2‐benzoxycarbonyl‐propylene carbonate (MBC) in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) as a macroinitiator with diethyl zinc as a catalyst. The subsequent catalytic hydrogenation of PEG‐b‐P(LA‐co‐MBC) with palladium hydroxide on activated charcoal (20%) as a catalyst was carried out to obtain the corresponding linear copolymer poly(ethyleneglycol)‐block‐poly(L ‐lactide‐co‐2‐methyl‐2‐carboxyl‐propylenecarbonate) [PEG‐b‐P(LA‐co‐MCC)] with pendant carboxyl groups. DSC analysis indicated that the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of PEG‐b‐P(LA‐co‐MBC) decreased with increasing MBC content in the copolymer, and Tg of PEG‐b‐P(LA‐co‐MCC) was higher than that of the corresponding PEG‐b‐P(LA‐co‐MBC). The in vitro degradation rate of PEG‐b‐P(LA‐co‐MCC) in the presence of proteinase K was faster than that of PEG‐b‐P(LA‐co‐MBC), and the cytotoxicity of PEG‐b‐P(LA‐co‐MCC) to chondrocytes from human fetal arthrosis was lower than that of poly(L ‐lactide). © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A model polyethylene‐poly(L ‐lactide) diblock copolymer (PE‐b‐PLLA) was synthesized using hydroxyl‐terminated PE (PE‐OH) as a macroinitiator for the ring‐opening polymerization of L ‐lactide. Binary blends, which contained poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) and very low‐density polyethylene (LDPE), and ternary blends, which contained PLLA, LDPE, and PE‐b‐PLLA, were prepared by solution blending followed by precipitation and compression molding. Particle size analysis and scanning electron microscopy results showed that the particle size and distribution of the LDPE dispersed in the PLLA matrix was sharply decreased upon the addition of PE‐b‐PLLA. The tensile and Izod impact testing results on the ternary blends showed significantly improved toughness as compared to the PLLA homopolymer or the corresponding PLLA/LDPE binary blends. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
