Isotactic 6-armed star-shaped poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with a narrow molecular weight distribution was successfully prepared by the living cationic polymerization of 6-armed star-shaped poly(tert-butyl vinyl ether) (PTBVE) and subsequent acidic ether cleavage. The PTBVE was synthesized using hexa(chloromethyl) melamine (HCMM) as a hexafunctional initiator and ZnI2 or ZnCl2 as an activator in toluene/MC (1/1 v/v) at −70 °C. A better living stability of PTBVE was obtained in the ZnCl2 activator system. The number average molecular weight and the polydispersity index of the 6-armed star-shaped PTBVE polymerized with ZnCl2 at −70 °C for 24 h were 156,000 g/mol and 1.47, respectively. The fraction of the mm sequence of the resulting PVA was 52%.  相似文献

To prepare water‐soluble, syndiotacticity‐rich poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) microfibrils for various industrial applications, we synthesized syndiotacticity‐rich, low molecular weight PVA by the solution polymerization of vinyl pivalate (VPi) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at low temperatures with 2,2′‐azobis(2,4‐dimethylvaleronitrile) (ADMVN) as an initiator and successive saponification of poly(vinyl pivalate) (PVPi). Effects of the initiator and monomer concentrations and the polymerization temperature were investigated in terms of the polymerization behaviors and molecular structures of PVPi and the corresponding syndiotacticity‐rich PVA. The polymerization rate of VPi in THF was proportional to the 0.91 power of the ADMVN concentration, indicating the heterogeneous nature of THF polymerization. The low‐temperature solution polymerization of VPi in THF with ADMVN proved to be successful in obtaining water‐soluble PVA with a number‐average degree of polymerization (Pn) of 300–900, a syndiotactic dyad content of 60–63%, and an ultimate conversion of VPi into PVPi of over 75%. Despite the low molecular weight of PVA with Pn = 800, water‐soluble PVA microfibrillar fibers were prepared because of the high level of syndiotacticity. In contrast, for PVA with Pn = 330, shapeless and globular morphologies were observed, indicating that molecular weight has an important role in the in situ fibrillation of syndiotacticity‐rich PVA. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The particle size distributions of poly(vinyl pivalate) (PVPi) produced from low‐temperature suspension polymerization of vinyl pivalate (VPi) with 2,2′‐azobis(4‐methoxy‐2,4‐dimethylvaleronitrile) (AMDMVN) as an initiator have been studied. By controlling various synthesis parameters, near‐monodisperse PVPi microspheres from 100 to 400 μm were obtained that are expected to be precursors of near‐monodisperse syndiotactic poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) microspheres for biomedical embolic applications. The mean particle diameter follows the relationship: the volume average diameter, DvadY0.26[VPi]0.52[AMDMVN]?0.25[PVA]0.40T?8.35Rpm?0.67, where Y, [VPi], [AMDMVN], [PVA], T, and Rpm are the fractional conversion, concentrations of VPi, AMDMVN, and suspending agent, polymerization temperature, and agitation speed during the polymerization of VPi, respectively. The polydispersity of the particle size distribution of PVPi decreased with decreasing conversion, [AMDMVN], T, and Rpm and with increasing [VPi]. In the case of [PVA], optimization of the suspension stability led to a narrow particle size distribution. Ultrahigh‐molecular‐weights PVPi and PVA (number‐average degrees of polymerization of PVPi (25,000–32,000) and PVA (14,000–17,500), of high syndiotactic diad content (63%), and of high ultimate conversion of VPi into PVPi (85–95%) were obtained by suspension polymerization at 10 °C, followed by saponification. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Bulk and/or solution polymerizations of a series of vinyl esters, e.g., vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, vinyl butyrate, vinyl pivalate, and vinyl benzoate were conducted. Iodine-coloration, 1,2-glycol structure, molecular weight, and tacticity (triad and pentad) were measured for the resulting poly(vinyl alcohol)s (PVAs). The iodine-coloration abilities of PVAs, derived from poly(vinyl ester)s that were obtained through bulk polymerization at 60°C, depended on the starting monomer, increasing in the following order: vinyl benzoate < vinyl acetate < vinyl propionate < vinyl butyrate < vinyl pivalate. In solution polymerizations of vinyl propionate and vinyl butyrate, it was revealed that the tacticity of the derived PVAs apparently depended on the type and amount of polymerization solvent employed, as found previously in the case for vinyl acetate. The iodine-coloration of these PVA samples varied in the same order as their syndiotactic content, while no relationship was observed toward their 1,2-glycol content. The probabilities of the syndiotactic propagation at 60°C were estimated as 0.49 (benzoate), 0.54 (acetate), 0.55 (propionate), 0.56 (butyrate), and 0.60 (pivalate), respectively.  相似文献

The influence of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) plasticiser content and molecular weight on the physicochemical properties of films cast from aqueous blends of poly(methyl vinyl ether-co-maleic acid) was investigated using thermal analysis, swelling studies, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and attenuated total reflectance (ATR)-Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. FTIR spectroscopy revealed a shift of the CO peak from 1708 to 1731 cm−1, indicating that an esterification reaction had occurred upon heating, thus producing crosslinked films. Higher molecular weight PEGs (10,000 and 1000 Da, respectively), having greater chain length, producing hydrogel networks with lower crosslink densities and higher average molecular weight between two consecutive crosslinks. Accordingly, such materials exhibited higher swelling rates. Hydrogels crosslinked with a low molecular weight PEG (PEG 200) showed rigid networks with high crosslink densities and, therefore, lower swelling rates. Polymer:plasticizer ratio alteration did not yield any discernable patterns, regardless of the method of analysis. The polymer-water interaction parameter (χ) increased with increases in the crosslink density. SEM studies showed that porosity of the crosslinked films increased with increasing PEG MW, confirming what had been observed with swelling studies and thermal analysis, that the crosslink density must be decreased as the Mw of the crosslinker is increased. Hydrogels containing PMVE/MA/PEG 10,000 could be used for rapid delivery of drug, due to their low crosslink density. Moderately crosslinked PMVE/MA/PEG 1000 hydrogels or highly crosslinked PMVE/MA/PEG 200 systems could then be used in controlling the drug delivery rates. We are currently evaluating these systems, both alone and in combination, for use in sustained release drug delivery devices.  相似文献

To prepare ultrahigh molecular weight (UHMW) poly(vinyl pivalate) (PVPi) with high conversion and high linearity for a precursor of syndiotacticity-rich UHMW poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), vinyl pivalate (VPi) was suspension polymerized using a low-temperature initiator, 2,2'-azobis(2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile) (ADMVN), and the effects of polymerization conditions on the polymerization behavior and molecular structures of PVPi and PVA prepared by saponifying PVPi were investigated. Suspension polymerization was slightly inferior to bulk polymerization in increasing the molecular weight of PVA. In contrast, the former was superior in increasing the conversion of the polymer. Suspension polymerization of VPi at 25 °C by controlling various polymerization factors proved to be successful in obtaining PVA of UHMW (number-average degree of polymerization (Pn): 14,700-16,700), high syndiotactic diad content (62%), and of high yield (ultimate conversion of VPi into PVPi: 85-90%). In the case of bulk polymerization of VPi under the same conditions, maximum Pn, conversion of 15,800-17,000, and 25-35% were obtained, respectively. The degree of branching was lower and the Pn and syndiotacticity were higher with PVA prepared from PVPi polymerized at lower temperatures. All PVAs from PVPi suspension-polymerized at 25 °C were fibrous, with a high degree of crystallinity and orientation of the crystallites.  相似文献

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) (polymer A) and poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) (polymer B) are known to form a thermodynamically miscible pair. In the present study the conclusion on miscibility of PVA/PVP solid blends, confirmed qualitatively (DMTA, FTIR) and quantitatively (DSC, χAB = − 0.69 at 503 K) is compared with the miscibility investigations of PVA/PVP solution blends by the technique of dilute solution viscometry. The miscibility of the ternary (polymer A/ polymer B/ solvent) system is estimated on the basis of experimental and ideal values of the viscosity parameters k, b and [η]. It is found that the conclusions on miscibility or nonmiscibility drawn from viscosity measurements in dilute solution blends depend: (i) on the applied extrapolation method used for the determination of the viscosity interaction parameters, (ii) on the assumed definition of the ideal values and (iii) on the thermodynamic quality of the solvent, which in the case of PVA depends on its degree of hydrolysis. Hence, viscometric investigations of dilute PVA/PVP solution blends have revealed that viscometry, widely used in the literature for estimation of polymer-polymer miscibility can not be recommended as a sole method to presume the miscibility of a polymer pair.  相似文献

Direct insertion probe pyrolysis mass spectrometry (DIP-MS) analyses of polycarbonate/poly(methyl methacrylate)/poly(vinyl acetate), (PC/PMMA/PVAc), ternary blends have been performed. The PC/PMMA/PVAc ternary blends were obtained by coalescing from their common γ-cyclodextrin-inclusion compounds (CD-ICs), through the removal of the γ-CD host (coalesced blend), and by a co-precipitation method (physical blend). The coalesced ternary blend showed different thermal behaviors compared to the co-precipitated physical blend. The stability of PC chains decreased due to the reactions of CH3COOH formed by deacetylation of PVAc above 300 °C, for both coalesced and physical blends. This process was more effective for the physical blend most likely due to the enhanced diffusion of CH3COOH into the amorphous PC domains, where it can further react producing low molecular weight PC fragments bearing methyl carbonate chain ends. The decrease in thermal stability of PC chains was less significant for the coalesced ternary blend indicating that the diffusion of CH3COOH was either somewhat limited or competed with intermolecular reactions between PMMA and PC and between PMMA and PVAc, which were detected and were associated with their close proximity in the intimately mixed coalesced PC/PMMA/PVAc ternary blend.  相似文献

Vinyl pivalate (VPi) was polymerized in bulk by ultraviolet-ray initiation at low temperatures using 2,2′-azobis(2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile) (ADMVN) and 2,2'-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) as photoinitiators. High molecular weight (HMW) poly(vinyl pivalate) (PVPi), having a number-average degree of polymerization (Pn) of 13,000–28,000, was obtained at conversions below 30% and converted by saponification to a syndiotacticity-rich HMW poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) microfibrillar fiber with Pn of 7300–18,300, syndiotactic diad (S-diad) and triad contents of ∼ 64% and ∼ 39%, respectively, and crystal melting temperature (Tm) of ∼ 249°C. ADMVN gave higher Pn than AIBN. On the other hand, conversion was smaller with the former than with the latter, and it was found that the initiation rate of ADMVN was lower than that of AIBN. Pn of PVA was constant while Pn of the precursor PVPi increased with increasing conversion. The syndiotacticity, Tm and thermal stability of PVA obtained from PVPi were much superior to those of PVA derived from poly(vinyl acetate) prepared under the same polymerization conditions. Polymerization of VPi at lower temperatures gave PVA with higher syndiotacticity. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Cobalt‐mediated radical polymerizations (CMRPs) utilizing redox initiation are demonstrated to produce poly(vinyl ester) homopolymers derived from vinyl pivalate (VPv) and vinyl benzoate (VBz), and their block copolymers with vinyl acetate (VAc). Combining anhydrous Co(acac)2, lauroyl peroxide, citric acid trisodium salt, and VPv at 30 °C results in controlled polymerizations that yield homopolymers with Mn = 2.5–27 kg/mol with Mw/Mn = 1.20–1.30. Homopolymerizations of scrupulously purified VBz proceed with lower levels of control as evidenced by broader polydispersities over a range of molecular weights (Mn = 4–16 kg/mol; Mw/Mn = 1.34–1.65), which may be interpreted in terms of the decreased nucleophilicity of these less electron donating propagating polymer chain ends. Based on these results, we demonstrate that sequential CMRP reactions present a viable route to microphase separated poly(vinyl ester) block copolymers as shown by small‐angle X‐ray scattering analyses. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Wheat starch was reacted with poly(vinyl acetate) and with poly(vinyl acetate-co-butyl acrylate) in an internal mixer at 150 °C in the absence of catalyst, and in the presence of sodium carbonate, zinc-acetate and titanium(IV) butoxide. The resulted blends were pressed into film and characterized by 1H NMR-13C NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), mechanical testing, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and water absorption. Partial trans-esterification took place between wheat starch and the polymers. The blends appeared as homogenous, translucent films with one glass transition temperature range, between that of starch and of the polymer. The presence of wheat starch in the blends improved the mechanical strength of the polymers, although elongation at break severely decreased, which is disadvantageous for processability. Zinc-acetate improved the tensile strength of the blends of starch with PVAC, while all catalysts resulted in an increase in strength of the blends of starch with poly(vinyl acetate-co-butyl acrylate) compared to the strength of the blends without catalyst. Water absorption of wheat starch/copolymer blends was between 150% and 250%, higher than that of the blends with the homopolymer, which was between 100% and 150% after soaking in water. The onset temperature of thermal decomposition was between 290 and 300 °C for all the blends, although the presence of sodium carbonate resulted in a decrease in the onset temperature of thermal decomposition by about 60 °C.  相似文献

The intermolecular interactions between poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) in tetrahydrofuran (THF), methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) were thoroughly investigated by the viscosity measurement. It has been found that the solvent selected has a great influence upon the polymer-polymer interactions in solution. If using PVAc and THF, or PVAc and DMF to form polymer solvent, the intrinsic viscosity of PVC in polymer solvent of (PVAc+THF) or (PVAc+DMF) is less than in corresponding pure solvent of THF or DMF. On the contrary, if using PVAc and MEK to form polymer solvent, the intrinsic viscosity of PVC in polymer solvent of (PVAc+MEK) is larger than in pure solvent of MEK. The influence of solvent upon the polymer-polymer interactions also comes from the interaction parameter term Δb, developed from modified Krigbaum and Wall theory. If PVC/PVAc blends with the weight ratio of 1/1 was dissolved in THF or DMF, Δb<0. On the contrary, if PVC/PVAc blends with the same weight ratio was dissolved in MEK, Δb>0. These experimental results show that the compatibility of PVC/PVAc blends is greatly associated with the solvent from which polymer mixtures were cast. The agreement of these results with differential scanning calorimetry measurements of PVC/PVAc blends casting from different solvents is good.  相似文献

A novel ω-azido-functionalized RAFT reagent, O-(2-azido-ethyl) S-benzyl dithiocarbonate (AEBDC), was synthesized and subsequently employed to mediate the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) to prepare end-functionalized polymers. The polymerization results showed that the RAFT polymerizations of VAc could be well controlled using AEBDC as the RAFT agent. Number-average molecular weights (Mn GPC) increased linearly with monomer conversion, and molecular weight distributions were relatively narrow. 1H NMR spectrum of the poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) confirmed the existence of functional azido group at the end of the polymers chains. The ω-azido-terminated polymers were coupled by “click” chemistry with a fluorescent alkyne, 7-propinyloxy coumarin, to prepare fluorescent PVAc. The fluorescence properties of the PVAc homopolymers before and after coupling with 7-propinyloxy coumarin in CH2Cl2 solution were investigated.  相似文献

The grafting preference of vinyl acetate onto the methine carbon of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) versus the acetate group of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) was determined as part of an attempt to prepare novel branched PVOH from partially hydrolyzed PVAc. The results showed long chain grafting on the acetate groups of the PVAc units rather than the methine carbons of the PVOH or PVAc units. Decreasing the monomer or initiator concentration decreased the molecular weight of the graft copolymer formed. Of the initiators studied, ammonium persulfate gave the largest increase in copolymer molecular weight. Both hydrolysis and reacetylation combined with gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and 13C-NMR of the fully hydrolyzed material were used to estimate the number and location of grafts. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Core(polyvinyl neodecanoate‐ethylene glycol dimethacrylate)‐shell(polyvinyl alcohol) (core (P(VND‐EGDMA))‐shell(PVA)) microspheres were developed by seeded polymerization with the use of conventional free radical and RAFT/MADIX mediated polymerization. Poly(vinyl pivalate) PVPi was grafted onto microspheres prepared via suspension polymerization of vinylneodecanoate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate. The amount of grafted polymer was found to be independent from the technique used with conventional free radical polymerization and MADIX polymerization resulting into similar shell thicknesses. Both systems—grafting via free radical polymerization or the MADIX process—were found to follow slightly different kinetics. While the free radical polymerization resulted in a weight gain linear with the monomer consumption in solution the growth in the MADIX controlled system experienced a delay. The core‐shell microspheres were obtained by hydrolysis of the poly(vinyl pivalate) surface grafted brushes to form poly(vinyl alcohol). During hydrolysis the microspheres lost a significant amount of weight, consistent with the hydrolysis of 40–70% of all VPi units. Drug loading was found to be independent of the shell layer thickness, suggesting that the drug loading is governed by the amount of bulk material. The shell layer does not appear to represent an obstacle to the drug ingress. Cell testing using colorectal cancer cell lines HT 29 confirm the biocompatibility of the empty microspheres whereas the clofazimine loaded particles lead to 50% cell death, confirming the release of the drug. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Activator generated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in inexpensive, non-toxic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), with air-stable Cu(II)X2(X = Br, Cl) as the catalyst and N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) as both ligand and reducing agent was investigated. The polymerizations in PEG proceeded in a well-controlled manner as evidenced by kinetic studies and chain extension results. The polydispersity of the polymer obtained was quite narrow, with a weight-average molecular weight/number-average molecular weight ratio of less than 1.2. Effects of the TMEDA content and the catalysts on polymerization were also investigated, respectively.  相似文献

Al3+ selective sensor has been fabricated from poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) matrix membranes containing neutral carrier morin as ionophore. Best performance was exhibited by the membrane having composition as morin:PVC:sodium tetraphenyl borate:tri-n-butylphosphate in the ratio 5:150:5:150 (w/w, mg). This membrane worked well over a wide activity range of 5.0 × 10−7 to 1.0 × 10−1 M of Al3+ with a Nernstian slope of 19.7 ± 0.1 mV/decade of Al3+ activity and a limit of detection 3.2 × 10−7 M. The response time of the sensor is ∼5 s and membrane could be used over a period of 2 months with good reproducibility. The proposed sensor works well over a pH range (3.5-5.0) and demonstrates good discriminating power over a number of mono-, di- and trivalent cations. The sensor can also be used in partially non-aqueous media having up to 20% (v/v) methanol, ethanol or acetone content with no significant change in the value of slope or working activity range. The sensor has also been used in the potentiometric titration of Al3+ with EDTA and for its determination in zinc plating mud and red mud.  相似文献

Poly(vinyl chloride)/hydrotalcite (PVC/HT) nanocomposites were prepared through vinyl chloride suspension polymerization in the presence of HT nanoparticles surface modified with alkyl phosphate (AP). The thermal stability, smoke emission and mechanical properties of PVC/HT nanocomposites were investigated. It was found that AP molecules were effectively absorbed by HT particles with no intercalation into the interlayer of HT. The dispersion morphologies of PVC/HT nanocomposites were observed by transmission electron microscopy showing that the majority of HT particles were dispersed in the PVC matrix in the nanoscale. The Congo Red measurement and thermogravimetric analysis showed that the thermal stability time, and the temperatures at 10% weight loss and at the maximum weight loss rate of PVC resins increased as the weight fraction of HT in the composite resins increased. The well-dispersed nano-sized HT showed an obvious smoke suppression effect on PVC. The maximum smoke density decreased about 1/3 and 1/2 when 2.5 wt% and 5.3 wt% nano-sized HT were incorporated into PVC, respectively. Furthermore, PVC/HT nanocomposites exhibited greater tensile strength and impact strength than the pristine PVC.  相似文献

Effect of nanoclay on the kinetics of atom transfer radical bulk homo- and copolymerization of styrene (St) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) initiated with CCl3-terminated poly (vinyl acetate) macroinitiator at 90 °C was investigated. CuCl/PMDETA was used as a catalyst system. Results showed that nanoclay significantly enhances the homopolymerization rate of MMA. It was attributed to the activated conjugated CC bond of MMA monomer via interaction between the carbonyl group of MMA monomer and the hydroxyl moiety (AlOH) of nanoclay as well as to the effect of nanoclay on the dynamic equilibrium between the active (macro)radicals and dormant species. Homopolymerization rate of St (a noncoordinative monomer with nanoclay) decreased slightly in the presence of nanoclay. It could be explained by inserting of a portion of macroinitiator into the clay galleries, where no sufficient St monomer exists due to the low compatibility or interaction of St monomer with nanoclay to react with the macroinitiator. Controlled/living characteristic of all the reactions were confirmed by GPC results. More reliable reactivity ratios of the St and MMA in the presence of nanoclay were calculated by using the cumulative average copolymer composition at the moderate to high conversion to be rSt = 0.290 ± 0.082, rMMA = 0.443 ± 0.093 (extended Kelen-Tudos method) and rSt = 0.293 ± 0.071, rMMA = 0.447 ± 0.080 (Mao-Huglin method). Results indicated that the rate of incorporation of MMA comonomer into the copolymer increases in the presence of nanoclay, verifying the existence of interaction between the carbonyl group of MMA comonomer and the hydroxyl moiety of nanoclay. It was found that in the presence of nanoclay, tendency of the random copolymerization of St and MMA toward an alternating copolymerization increases.  相似文献

Thermal degradation of polycarbonate, poly(vinyl acetate) and their blends   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We have recently developed a novel approach for intimately mixing thermodynamically incompatible polymers, which utilizes the formation of inclusion compounds (ICs) formed with host cyclodextrins (CDs), followed by removal of CD and coalescence of the common guest polymers into a blend. In this paper direct insertion probe pyrolysis mass spectrometry (DIP-MS) analyses of polycarbonate (PC), poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and PC/PVAc blends, obtained by coalescence from their inclusion compounds formed with host γ-CD (coalesced blend) and by co-precipitation (physical blend), have been performed. Variations in the thermal stabilities of the coalesced polymers were recorded both by TGA and DIP-MS and compared to the corresponding as-received polymers. It has been determined that for both coalesced and physical blends of PC/PVAc, CH3COOH formed by deacetylation of PVAc above 300 °C, reacts with PC chains decreasing their thermal stability. This process was more effective for the physical blend, most likely due to enhanced diffusion of CH3COOH, produced by deacetylation of PVAc, into the PC domains, where it can further react producing low molecular weight PC fragments bearing methyl carbonate chain ends.  相似文献
