The CERES experiment has measured inclusive photon production in S-Au collisions of 200 GeV/nucleon at the CERN SPS. No evidence for direct emission of photons was found. For the kinematic region 2.1<y<2.65 and 0.4 GeV/c<p⊥<2.0 GeV/c the yield andp⊥-dependence of the observed photons are well reproduced by hadron decays. Furthermore, their production rate is found to be proportional to the charged particle density. The systematic errors comparing the measured and expected photon yield result in an upper limit of 14% for the emission of direct photons in central S-Au collisions. For a photon source with a yield depending quadratically on the charged particle density the limit can be reduced to 7%.  相似文献

Results from the PHENIX experiment at RHIC on direct photon production in p+p, d+Au, and Au+Au collisions at  =200 GeV are presented. In p+p collisions, direct photon production at high pT behaves as expected from perturbative QCD calculations. The p+p measurement serves as a baseline for direct photon production in Au+Au collisions. In d+Au collisions, no effects of cold nuclear matter are found within the large uncertainty of the measurement. In Au+Au collisions, the production of high pT direct photons scales as expected for particle production in hard scatterings. This supports jet quenching models, which attribute the suppression of high pT hadrons to the energy loss of fast partons in the medium produced in the collision. Low pT direct photons, measured via e+e- pairs with small invariant mass, are possibly related to the production of thermal direct photons.  相似文献

We have measured the inclusivep T spectra of soft photons produced at central and backward rapidities in 450 GeV/cp-Be collisions down to 1 MeV/c in transverse momentum. In the region 1<p T <20 MeV/c an excess of photons over those expected from hadronic decays is observed. This excess is comparable, within systematic errors, with estimates of direct photons produced via hadronic bremsstrahlung. An upper limit is derived on the presence of additional sources of direct photons at small transverse momentum.  相似文献

We have measured direct photon production in pp collisions at the CERN intersecting storage rings for c.m. energies 31 < √s < 63 GeV and transverse momenta up to 9GeV/c, using segmented lead/liquid-argon calorimeters. The ratio of direct photon to π0 production is significantly larger than zero, starting at pT ≈ 4 GeV/c and increasing to values of about 0.4 at 9GeV/c. No significant √s dependence is seen.  相似文献

The presented results are the first measurements at RHIC for direct γ-charged hadron azimuthal correlations in heavy ion collisions. We use these correlations to study the color charge density of the medium through the medium-induced modification of high-p T parton fragmentation. Azimuthal correlations of direct photons at high transverse energy (8<p T <16 GeV) with away-side charged hadrons of transverse momentum (3<p T <6 GeV/c) have been measured over a broad range of centrality for Au+Au collisions and p+p collisions at  GeV in the STAR experiment. A transverse shower shape analysis in the STAR Barrel Electromagnetic Calorimeter Shower Maximum Detector is used to discriminate between the direct photons and photons from the decays of high p T π 0. The per-trigger away-side yield of direct γ is smaller than from π 0 trigger at the same centrality class. Within the current uncertainty the I CP of direct γ and π 0 are similar.  相似文献

Direct photon production in Au+Au collisions at √s NN =200 GeV has been measured in the p Trange of 1<p T<5 GeV/c. The yield as a function of centrality is in agreement with published data of the RHIC 2002 run, and with results from a new method that explores very low mass dileptons. The result is compared to several theoretical calculations, and it is found that the measurement is not inconsistent with calculations including thermal photon contributions.  相似文献

We present data on photon production in non single-diffractivep \(\bar p\) -collisions at c.m. energies of 200 and 900 GeV. Besides the general properties of photon production, i.e. pseudorapidity distribution and average multiplicity, we also investigate photon-charged two-particle pseudorapidity and multiplicity correlations. We find for the average number of photons in non single-diffractivep \(\bar p\) -collisions 22.2±1.4±2.0 at 200 GeV and 41.4±2.1±3.5 at 900 GeV, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The analysis of photon-charged particle multiplicity correlations reveals strong positive correlations between the average number of photons and the number of simultaneously produced charged particles, as expected from FNAL and ISR studies and from our result at 546 GeV. We obtain for the correlation slope 0.95±0.08±0.11 at 200 GeV and 1.09±0.09±0.13 at 900 GeV (first error is statistical and the second systematic). The investigation of photon-charged two-particle pseudorapidity correlations shows that these correlations are of short range and compatible with the observed charged two-particle pseudorapidity correlations. These correlations and the results for the average number of photons as a function of the produced number of charged particles favour the conclusion that photon sources other than π0 s contribute significantly to the observed photon yield in non single-diffractivep \(\bar p\) -collisions. For example, if all photons are assumed to come from π0 s and η mesons, a η/π0 ratio of about 20% is inferred.  相似文献

Starting from the classical expressions for emission of radiation we calculate soft photon production in the boost-invariant color-flux tube model. In the center-of-mass system of the initial tube we find that for large energies $(\sqrt s \sim 20GeV)$ the production of photons with frequencies: 20 MeV<ω<50 MeV, and emitted perpendicularly to the collision axis is strongly enhanced; it exceeds considerably production of photons given by the Low limit. For the emission more collinear with the collision axis and for decreasing ω the effect becomes weaker and, eventually, in the limit ω=0 we recover precisely the Low formula. We also find that for smaller energies $(\sqrt s \sim 5GeV)$ the emission of photons is well reproduced by the Low formula. Generally speaking, the observed enhancement is related to the existence of a large, i.e. extended in time, region of photon emission. This, in turn, results from the time dilation accompanying the space-time evolution of tubes. Strong time dilation effects follow from the boost-invariance of our model and, for larges, considerably enhance radiation of soft photons. By the same token, this enhancement decreases with decreasings, because dilation decreases.  相似文献

A measurement of direct photon production in 208Pb+208Pb collisions at 158A GeV has been carried out in the CERN WA98 experiment. The invariant yield of direct photons in central collisions is extracted as a function of transverse momentum in the interval 0.51.5 GeV/c. The result constitutes the first observation of direct photons in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. It could be significant for diagnosis of quark-gluon-plasma formation.  相似文献

The production of charged hadrons with high pT in αα collisions at √s=126 GeV and pp collisions at √s=31 and 63 GeV is compared, and the structure of the events associated with the high-pT particles is studied. The probability of finding associated particles close to the trigger particle increases strongly between √s=31 and 63 GeV for pp collisions. For pT>2.5GeV/c the αα/pp cross section ratio at the same energy per nucleon is measured to be 18.7 ± 2.0, to be compared with A2 = 16, and a higher associated multiplicity is observed for αα.  相似文献

As part of a study of large pT phenomena in photon-proton collisions at the CERN ISR, a search for direct single photon production has been performed. A statistical division of the data sample into the fraction consistent with single photon and the fraction due to multiphoton decays of neutral hadrons is accomplished by measuring the average conversion probability for the sample in a one radiation length thick converter. The fraction of the sample attributable to direct single photon production is 〈γ/all〉 = 0.074 ± 0.012 for 6 GeV/c < pT 10 GeV/c, and 〈γ/all〉 = 0.26 ± 0.04 for pT > 10 GeV/c, with an additional systematic uncertainty of ±0.05 for both values.  相似文献

First results from measurements of Au?Au collisions at $\sqrt {s_{NN} } = 130$ GeV, performed with the PHENIX experiment during the initial physics run of Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in summer 2000, are summarized. Global characterization of the collisions was obtained from charged-particle multiplicity and transverse energy densities. At mid-rapidity, dN ch / and dE T / rise steadily with the event centrality, while the ratio <E T >/<N ch > remains constant. Transverse momentum spectra of charged particles up to 5 GeV/c yield a suppression of high-momentum particles in the most central events when compared to a simple scaling of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. The scaling matches with peripheral collisions. Transverse momentum spectra of identified neutral pions from 1 to 4 GeV/c in peripheral collisions show consistency with point-like scaling with the average number of binary collisions. Yields in central collisions are significantly suppressed. Transverse momentum spectra of identified charged hadrons up to 3.5 GeV/c were measured in minimum bias events. The mass and centrality dependencies of inverse slope parameters and mean transverse momenta were determined. Inclusive spectra of electrons were measured for momenta from a few hundred MeV/c to 4 GeV/c. Inclusive photon spectra from a few hundred MeV/c to 3 GeV/c were obtained from conversion pair measurements.  相似文献

We have measured the production of direct photons, π0's, and η's in pp and pp collisions at √s=53 GeV in the range 2≈pT≈6 GeV/c for the central rapidity region |y| 0.4. No statistically significant difference between pp? and pp interactions is observed.  相似文献

We present the first measurement of pseudorapidity distribution of photons in the region 2.3 < or = eta < or = 3.7 for different centralities in Au+Au collisions at square root of (S(NN)) = 62.4 GeV. We find that the photon yield scales with the number of participating nucleons at all collision centralities studied. The pseudorapidity distribution of photons, dominated by pi0 decays, has been compared to those of charged pions, photons, and inclusive charged particles from heavy-ion and nucleon-nucleon collisions at various energies. The photon production has been shown to be consistent with the energy and centrality independent limiting fragmentation scenario.  相似文献

The inclusive two-particle cross section for the production of largep T photons and opposite side charged hadrons in proton-proton collisions is examined in detail in the framework of QCD. The model, with the parametrization as in our previous work, agrees with the measured single photon spectra. Quantitative predictions are made for two-particle distributions to be measured at the ISR. The contributions due to the photon bremsstrahlung and the effects coming from the intrinsic constituent motion are estimated. It is shown that indeed the direct subprocess gluon+quark→photon+quark gives the dominant contribution in the experimentally relevant region of phase space, and that direct information about the gluon structure function can be obtained from such measurements.  相似文献

The hadronic production of electron pairs with masses between 200 and 500 MeV and large transverse momentum has been measured at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). The expected relation between low-mass electron pairs and real photons is used to determine the direct hadronic production of photons. Contrary to indications from some previous experiments, the observed spectrum is consistent with expectations from the decay of known mesons, and leads to a value for the ratio of direct photons to π0 of γ/π0 = (0.55 ± 0.92)% for 2 < pT < 3 GeV and 〈√s〉 = 55 GeV.  相似文献

The production of charged hadrons and mesons in the collisions of quasi-real photons has been measured using the OPAL detector at LEP. The data were taken at centre-of-mass energies of 161 and 172 GeV. The differential cross-sections as a function of the transverse momentum and the pseudorapidity of the charged hadrons and mesons have been compared to the leading order Monte Carlo simulations of PHOJET and PYTHIA and to perturbative next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations. The distributions have been measured in the range GeV of the hadronic invariant mass W. By comparing the transverse momentum distribution of charged hadrons measured in interactions with -proton and meson-proton data we find evidence for hard photon interactions in addition to the purely hadronic photon interactions. Results on direct photon measurements from the PHENIX experiment at RHIC are presented. The direct photon yields for P T >6GeV/c as a function of centrality in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt {s_{NN} } = 200$ GeV are found to be consistent with NLO pQCD calculation scaled by the number of binary collisions. The results suggest that the photons observed are emitted from the initial stage of hard scattering. Comparisons with several theoretical calculations are also presented.  相似文献

Results are presented of an ongoing analysis of direct photon production in  =200 GeV deuteron-gold collisions (d+Au) with the STAR experiment at RHIC. A significant excess of direct photons is observed near mid-rapidity (0<y<1) and found to be consistent with next-to-leading order pQCD calculations including the contribution from fragmentation photons.
