A proficiency testing (PT) programme on the determination of benzoic acid in orange juice was organised by the Chemical Metrology Laboratory, Health Sciences Authority, Singapore, for the local food testing laboratories. The PT programme used a metrologically traceable assigned value determined by isotope dilution mass spectrometry to assess the performance of the participating laboratories. This paper discusses the reasons and approach to applying metrological principles to determine the assigned value of a PT programme. The procedure undertaken by the Laboratory to prepare a batch of PT sample, conduct homogeneity and stability testings, as well as value assignment, is presented. The discussions also include the estimation of the measurement uncertainties arising from the characterisation, testing for homogeneity and testing for stability of the PT sample. The Coordinator of the PT programme used the assigned value and its associated measurement uncertainty, together with those of the participating laboratories to assess their performances. Statistical tools applied in the performance evaluations are also presented.  相似文献

The National Metrology Institute of Japan has issued a certified reference material of tunnel dust for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and toxic element analyses. PAH certification was performed using isotope dilution mass spectrometry with deuterium-labeled PAHs as internal standards. Three extraction techniques (microwave-assisted extraction with toluene/methanol, Soxhlet extraction with toluene, and pressurized liquid extraction with toluene) were used, and the extracts were measured by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry with two different columns. For values of PAHs, 11 PAHs are provided as certified values between 0.294 and 20.3 mg/kg, and five PAHs are provided as information values. Certified values of five toxic elements (Cr, Ni, Pb, Mn, and Cd) obtained from microwave-assisted digestions and a combination of measurement techniques are also provided between 43.4 and 10.71 × 103 mg/kg.  相似文献

Two freshwater sediments certified reference materials (CRMs) for 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been developed by the Institute for Environmental Reference Materials (IERM) of Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) in China. The methodology for preparing the CRMs of PAHs in sediments is described in this paper. The collected natural sediment samples were air-dried, ground, homogenised, packed, sterilised and tested on stability and homogeneity. Homogeneity results showed that the between-unit variation was confirmed to be below 4.5% for each compound. Stability was assessed after storage of samples for 16 months at temperature less than 30°C and in shade. The certification of the natural sediment matrix CRMs for PAHs was based on the agreement of results using different analytical techniques including gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and reversed-phase liquid chromatography (LC) by no less than eight collaborating laboratories including IERM. Results of the homogeneity showed that the calculated ubb′ was 0.9–2.5% for environmental river standard-4 (ERS-4) and 9–2.3% for environmental lake standard-1 (ELS-1), whereas stability results of total 16 PAHs indicated that the calculated urel, lts was 4.2% for ERS-4 and 2.2% for ELS-1. Certified values of 16 PAHs in ERS-4 varied from 8.5 to 167 μg/kg and ranged from 0.036 to 2.8 mg/kg in ELS-1.The good comparability, together with the independent confirmation of the assigned mass fraction by using different methods, confirmed that the CRMs are suitable for the method validation and quality control in soil or sediments analysis.  相似文献

A proficiency testing (PT) scheme was developed for a limited number of analytical laboratories participating in the analysis of natural water in Israel. Three fit-for-intended-use reference materials (RMs) were prepared for a pilot PT from natural water: RM-blank and two in-house reference materials (IHRMs) with seven analytes fortified to achieve different levels of analyte concentrations. The measurands for the PT participants were the traceable spike values certified in the IHRMs, i.e., added mass concentrations of the analytes. The RM-blank and IHRMs were found to be homogeneous and stable over 11 days, the time necessary for the experimental part of the PT. The RMs were distributed to the PT participants as unknown test items similar to routine samples. The test results were evaluated using their deviations from the IHRM-certified values. Eight Israeli laboratories took part in the interlaboratory comparison. Individual laboratory performance and metrological compatibility of the PT results of the participants, as a local group of laboratories, were evaluated for every analyte.  相似文献

A screening method for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) determination in sediment using headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) with gas chromatography–flame ionization detection was developed. In order to obtain the convenient experimental conditions for HS-SPME extraction an experimental design with two steps was done. 0.2 g of sediment and 85 µm polyacrylate fibre, 80 °C and 120 min were the chosen extractions conditions. The limit of detection (LOD) was from 0.8 ng g−1 (fluoranthene) to 8 ng g−1 (chrysene). The relative standard deviation (RSD) was less than 7.0%. Determination of PAHs in NRC–CNRC–HS–3B reference marine sediment showed good agreement with the certified values. The method was applied in the analysis of ten river and estuary surface sediments from Gipuzkoa (North Spain). PAHs total concentration ranged from 400 to 5,500 ng g−1.

An accurate, precise and sensitive method is described for the analysis of 29 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), including 19 2-6-ringed PAHs and 10 alkyl-PAHs. The method is based on an isotope dilution technique using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and available labeled PAHs as internal standards. Quality parameters were calculated with satisfactory results and 36 Spanish river sediments were analysed. Results were evaluated regarding to the sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) based on the effects range-low (ERL) and the effects range-median (ERM) values. Most analysed sediments showed a good quality, since only 7 of them exceeded ERL values, including one sample surpassing ERM values. PAH profiles were studied in order to identify PAH sources as mainly petrogenic or pyrogenic. Most samples showed petrogenic-type fingerprints, although 6 of the 11 sediments with the highest PAH concentrations (> 1000 ng/g) were classified as pyrogenic, including 4 of the 7 samples exceeding ERL values. Quality assurance was carried out by the triplicate analysis of one preanalysed river sediment without PAHs subsequently spiked at a medium (500 ng/g) and a low concentration level (10 ng/g) of each analyte. Main quality requirements for methods based on isotope dilution were accomplished. Method accuracy was 80-120% for most PAHs, method precision was <15% for all the analysed compounds and method detection limits (MDLs) were 1-3 ng/g.  相似文献

Summary A new marine sediment Standard Reference Material (SRM) has been prepared and analyzed for the determination of trace organic constituents. SRM 1941, Organics in Marine Sediment, has been certified for concentrations of 11 PAHs using results obtained from gas chromatography (GC) with flame ionization detection, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. Non-certified values for 24 additional PAHs are also reported. GC with electron capture detection was used to provide non-certified concentrations for 15 PCB congeners and 7 chlorinated pesticides. In addition to the organic contaminants, concentrations of 32 major and trace elements were determined using neutron activation analysis, and the sulfur content was also determined using isotope dilution thermal ionization mass spectrometry.  相似文献

An intercalibration exercise between 13 laboratories from seven countries was conducted for comparing the methylmercury measurement techniques for marine biological tissues. Analyses have been conducted on two sets of samples: a fish muscle and a mussel soft tissue. Most of the participating laboratories performed six replicate analyses, allowing statistical comparisons. Various analytical techniques have been used, including cold vapour atomic absorption spectrophotometry (CVAA), electron capture gas liquid chromatography (GCEC), neutron activation (NAA), and inductively coupled plasma–isotopic dilution mass spectrometry (ICPIDMS). All of these methods offer similar results. They allow us to define consensus values which seem good estimates of the real concentrations. In addition the results show, for most of the participating laboratories, good accuracy and precision in the determination.  相似文献

A discussion of proficiency testing (PT) topics started by Heydorn (Accred Qual Assur 15:643–645, 2010) is continued in the present paper. The role of PT in the accreditation of testing/analytical laboratories, the use of consensus values (average or weighted average, median, observed standard deviation, etc.) and a metrological background of PT schemes are discussed. It is shown that metrological traceability, comparability, and compatibility, as well as commutability of a reference material, are the key issues of any PT scheme that applies certified reference material as test items. Metrological compatibility of PT results in such schemes is a property demonstrating the closeness of the PT results to the certified value in comparison with the measurement uncertainty of their difference. The metrological background is especially important for the selection and use of PT schemes for a limited number of participants (fewer than 30) as detailed in IUPAC/CITAC Guide on the topic published in 2010 in Pure Appl Chem 82(5):1099–1135.  相似文献

Oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (oxy-PAHs) have recently received much attention in discussions regarding the negative impacts of particulate matter (PM) on human health and the environment. The National Institute of Standards and Technology provides several environmental matrix standard reference materials (SRMs) with certified and reference values for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitrated PAHs. In this study, the concentrations of oxygenated PAHs are determined in three air PM SRMs (1649b, 1648a, and 2786) and three diesel PM SRMs (1650b, 2975, and 1975) using two independent gas chromatography–mass spectrometry methods. Concentrations of oxy-PAHs were at the milligrams per kilogram level with higher overall concentrations in diesel PM (up to 50 mg/kg for 9,10-anthraquinone). One of the highest oxy-PAH concentrations (up to 5 mg/kg) measured in the air particulate SRMs was for 7,12-benz[a]anthracenquinone. These results suggest that oxygenated PAHs should not be neglected in the analysis of PM as their concentrations can be as high as those of some PAHs and are one to two orders of magnitude higher than those for nitro-PAHs.  相似文献

For the first time in the International Measurement Evaluation Programme (IMEP)-14, a sediment sample was offered to analytical laboratories to perform measurements of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb, Hg, Ni, U and Zn. In line with IMEP policy, the results were presented according to the certified / assigned reference values established by several reference laboratories around the world. The certification campaign is described in detail. Isotope dilution mass spectrometry was applied as a primary method of measurement, whenever possible, to achieve SI-traceable results. For reference measurements of As, Fe, Hg and Zn, k0-neutron activation analysis and Zeeman atomic absorption spectrometry were applied. The reference values (ranges) were characterised as ”certified” (for Cd, Cr, Pb, Ni and U) or ”assigned” (for As, Cu, Fe, Hg and Zn) according to IMEP policy. The measurement uncertainty of the certified / assured reference values was calculated according to the ISO/BIPM Guide. Received: 7 June 2001-10-27 Accepted: 19 August 2001  相似文献

The National Metrology Institute of Japan has issued a certified reference material (CRM) of freshwater lake sediment for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) analyses. The certification used three extraction techniques: pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) with toluene, PLE with dichloromethane/ethyl acetate (1:1 by volume), and alkaline extraction (1 M KOH in methanol) in combination with microwave-assisted extraction. Both gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and liquid chromatography/dopant-assisted atmospheric pressure photoionization/MS (LC/DA-APPI/MS) analyses were used. Certified values are provided for 18 PAHs at 1–25 μg kg−1 except for perylene (2.08 × 103 μg kg−1), and information values are provided for two. Since the values of PAHs in the CRM are much lower than those in other CRMs and are comparable to those found at sites with little human influence, the CRM is suitable for PAH monitoring in sediment and soil samples.  相似文献

Comparability and compatibility of proficiency testing (PT) results are discussed for schemes with a limited number of participants (less than 20–30) based on the use of reference materials (RMs) as test items. Since PT results are a kind of measurement/analysis/test result, their comparability is a property conditioned by traceability to measurement standards applied in the measurement process. At the same time, metrological traceability of the certified value of the RM (sent to PT participants as test items) is also important, since the PT results are compared with the RM certified value. The RM position in the calibration hierarchy of measurement standards sets the degree of comparability for PT results, which can be assessed in the scheme. However, this assessment is influenced by commutability (adequacy or match) of the matrix RM used for PT and routine samples. Compatibility of PT results is a characteristic of the collective (group) performance of the laboratories participating in PT that can be expressed as closeness of the distribution of the PT results to the distribution of the RM data. Achieving quality-of-measurement/analysis/test results in the framework of the concept “tested once, accepted everywhere” requires both comparability and compatibility of the test results.  相似文献

An operational interlaboratory comparison programme is described which disseminates SI-traceable reference values to laboratories worldwide. These reference values have an uncertainty and traceability that is demonstrated at the highest metrological level. Participating laboratories can use these values to establish the degree of equivalence of their measurement results and can use this to support their measurement capability claims, e.g. towards third parties. The programme has been run by the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM) since 1988, in the first phase as an awareness programme. Currently, IRMM is focusing its efforts on educational aspects of metrology via a collaboration with the European Co-operation for Accreditation, national metrological institutes (NMIs) and interested academic networks. The viewgraphs used are presented in the “Electronic Supplementary Material” of this ACQUAL issue.  相似文献

The application of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) for purity determination is well documented in literature and is used amongst others in the analysis of pure organic crystalline compounds. The aim of this work is to examine whether the DSC method for purity determination consistently produces values for the purity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which are sufficiently accurate as required for the certification of reference materials. For this purpose, 34 different existing PAH certified reference materials were tested. The DSC results are shown to be consistent with the results obtained by other methods assessing the organic impurities content in PAHs, like gas chromatography (GC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry. Significant differences between the measured values and the certified purity values were observed only in a limited number of cases.  相似文献

Proficiency testing (PT) is an essential tool used by laboratory accreditation bodies to assess the competency of laboratories. Because of limited resources of PT providers or for other reasons, the assigned reference value used in the calculation of z-score values has usually been derived from some sort of consensus value obtained by central tendency estimators such as the arithmetic mean or robust mean. However, if the assigned reference value deviates significantly from the ‘true value’ of the analyte in the test material, laboratories’ performance will be evaluated incorrectly. This paper evaluates the use of consensus values in proficiency testing programmes using the Monte Carlo simulation technique. The results indicated that the deviation of the assigned value from the true value could be as large as 40%, depending on the parameters of the proficiency testing programmes under investigation such as sample homogeneity, number of participant laboratories, concentration level, method precision and laboratory bias. To study how these parameters affect the degree of discrepancy between the consensus value and the true value, a fractional factorial design was also applied. The findings indicate that the number of participating laboratories and the distribution of laboratory bias were the prime two factors affecting the deviation of the consensus value from the true value.  相似文献

The development of an analytical procedure for speciation analysis of methylmercury in fish products is presented. The method is based on high-performance liquid chromatography hyphenated to inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The metrological approach is stressed out in this paper, in order to provide reliable and comparable results. A complete uncertainty budget has been evaluated and the method has been validated by the use of a certified reference material. Moreover, the detection could rely on the isotope dilution mass spectrometry, a powerful strategy capable of highly accurate results traceable to the “Système International d’Unités” and recognised by the “Comité Consultatif pour la Quantité de Matière” as a primary method of measurement. The objective of this study was to develop a novel analytical chemistry method, comprised of a coupled high-performance liquid chromatography–gas chromatography/mass spectrometry system (LC–GC/MS) with low detection limits and high selectivity, for the identification and determination of oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAHs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban air and diesel particulate matter. The linear range of the four OPAHs, which include 9,10-anthraquinone, 4H-cyclopenta[def]phenanthrene-4-one, benzanthrone, and 7,12-benz[a]anthraquinone, was 0.7 pg–43.3 ng with limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) on the order of 0.2–0.8 and 0.7–1.3 pg, respectively. The LODs in this study are generally lower than values reported in the literature, which can be explained by using large-volume injection. The recoveries of the OPAHs spiked onto glass fiber filters using two different pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) methods were in the ranges of 84–107 and 67–110 %, respectively. The analytical protocols were validated using the following National Institute of Standards and Technology standard reference materials: SRM 1649a (Urban Dust), SRM 1650b (Diesel Particulate Matter), and SRM 2975 (Diesel Particulate Matter, Industrial Forklift). The measured mass fractions of the OPAHs in the standard reference materials (SRMs) in this present study are higher than the values from the literature, except for benzanthrone in SRM 1649a (Urban Dust). In addition to the OPAHs, 44 PAHs could be detected and quantified from the same particulate extract used in this protocol. Using data from the literature and applying a two-sided t test at the 5 % level using Bonferroni correction, significant differences were found between the tested PLE methods for individual PAHs. However, the measured mass fractions of the PAHs were comparable, similar to, or higher than those previously reported in the literature.  相似文献

A methodology for the simultaneous analysis of eight polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs); eight methoxylated PBDEs (MeO-PBDEs); and three emerging flame retardants, hexabromobenzene (HBB), pentabromoethyl benzene (PBEB), and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) by gas chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS-MS) was developed for two environmental matrices (sediment and sludge) and three biological matrices (fish, dolphin blubber, and bird eggs). The use of selective reaction monitoring (SRM) allows a high selectivity, which is critical in the analysis of complex samples like blubber. Analytical parameters such as linearity, reproducibility, or accuracy were evaluated. Method limits of detection and quantification were evaluated and compared with GC-EI-MS and GC-NCI-MS. Method detection limits were valid for the environmental analysis in all cases, with values between 0.01 and 1.65 ng/g dw for sediment, 0.05 and 2.78 ng/g dw for sludge, 0.04 and 10.6 ng/g lw for fish, 0.01 and 1.11 ng/g lw for dolphin blubber, and 0.03 and 3.20 ng/g lw for bird eggs. The developed method was applied to five samples of each matrix. PBDEs were detected in all samples, while MeO-PBDEs were only detected in dolphin blubber. DBDPE was detected in sediment and sludge.  相似文献
