We have investigated the photochemical characteristics of silver 4‐nitrobenzenethiolate (Ag‐4NBT) by means of Raman spectroscopy. When Ag‐4NBT is irradiated with an argon ion laser at 514.5 nm, its Raman spectrum changes over time, resulting in the production of 4NBT‐capped silver nanoparticles. The surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectrum of 4NBT adsorbed on those Ag nanoparticles is subsequently converted to that of 4‐aminobenzenethiol (4ABT). These surface‐induced photoreduction characteristics were investigated by monitoring the growth of Raman peaks of 4ABT as a function of the laser exposure time. Water vapor or ambient conditions were more effective than vacuum conditions for the photoreduction of 4NBT to 4ABT. Nonetheless, the occurrence of photolysis even under vacuum conditions suggests that the benzene ring hydrogen atoms might be the H‐atom source of the nitro‐to‐amine group conversion although in ambient conditions water or solvent molecules trapped inside the Ag‐4NBT should be the primary H‐atom source and facilitate the transfer of electrons, as well as the diffusion of Ag atoms to form highly SERS‐active nanoaggregates. The substrate‐dependent surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of 4‐aminobenzenethiol (4‐ABT) adsorbed on Au surfaces has been investigated. 4‐ABT is one of the very unique adsorbate molecules whose SERS spectral patterns are known to be noticeably dependent on the relative contribution of chemical enhancement mechanism vs electromagnetic enhancement mechanism. The SERS spectral patterns of 4‐ABT adsorbed on gold substrates with various surface morphology have thus been analyzed in terms of the symmetry types of the vibrational modes. Almost invisibly weak b2 type vibrational bands were observed in the SERS spectra of the 4‐ABT adsorbed on Au colloidal sol nanoparticles or commercially available Au micro‐powders because of the weak contribution of the chemical enhancement. However, greatly enhanced b2 vibrational bands were observed in the spectra of the 4‐ABT molecules adsorbed on the synthesized Au(Zn) sponge or the electrochemically roughened Au(ORC) foil caused by the strong contribution of the chemical enhancement mechanism. In order to resolve the dispute on the origin of the b2‐type bands in the surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of 4‐aminobenzenethiol (4‐ABT), we have measured its SERS spectra under a variety of conditions, including variable temperature and rotation, electrochemistry, and pH, as well as in the presence of a reducing agent. For comparison, the SERS spectra of 4‐nitrobenzenethiol (4‐NBT) and methyl orange (MO), a prototype azo compound, were also measured. First, we found that 4‐ABT on Ag is not subjected to photoreaction, although 4‐NBT is highly photoreactive on a silver surface. In the electrochemical environment, b2‐type bands of 4‐ABT lost their intensity at very negative potentials, but the intensity recovered immediately upon raising the potential. In addition, b2‐type bands were observed under rotation even after lowering the potential. The disappearance and reappearance of the b2‐type bands could also be observed by bringing the sample of 4‐ABT on Ag into contact consecutively with a borohydride solution and water. This is because the surface potential of Ag is lowered by contact with a borohydride solution. Besides, we found that not only the normal Raman but also the SERS spectral features of 4‐ABT are hardly affected by pH variation, while the spectral features of MO are greatly affected, especially in the region of the NN stretching vibration, suggesting that the possibility of a photoconversion of 4‐ABT to an azo compound is low. Altogether, the b2‐type bands were attributed to 4‐ABT, appearing in conjunction with the chemical enhancement mechanism in SERS. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We report the observation of large surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) (106) for 4‐tert‐butylpyridine molecules adsorbed on a silver electrode surface in an electrochemical cell with electrode potential set at − 0.5 V. A decrease in electrode potential to − 0.3 V was accompanied by a decrease in relative intensities of the vibrational modes. However, there were no changes in vibrational wavenumbers. Comparison of both normal solution Raman and SERS spectra shows very large enhancement of the intensities of a1, a2, and b2 modes at laser excitation of 488 nm. Enhancement of the non‐totally symmetric modes indicates the presence of charge transfer as a contributor to the enhancement. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Raman scattering and surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) have been used to study the behavior of 4‐mercaptopyridine (4‐Mpy) dissolved in water and adsorbed on silver mirrors. In order to gain the actual structure and the theoretical modes of the 4‐Mpy dissolved in water and adsorbed on the surface of silver mirror, ab initio calculation at the Hartree–Fock (HF) level and density functional theory (DFT) at Beck's three‐parameter Lee‐Yang‐Parr (B3LYP) level were performed to calculate the vibrational modes and wavenumbers. 4‐Mpy/2H2O and 4‐Mpy/Ag complex systems were optimized, and then the corresponding Raman spectra were calculated and analyzed. Compared with the experimental results, the calculated results of 4‐Mpy and 4‐Mpy/2H2O complex systems obtained from DFT method were more accurate. Among the results calculated with HF method, the one with three Ag atoms was economical, which took less computer time but gave equivalent results to those with more noumber of Ag atoms. Vibrational bands of L ‐tryptophan which was adsorbed on Ag nanoparticles (∼10 nm in diameter) have been investigated in the spectral range of 200–1700 cm−1 using surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy. Compared with the normal Raman scattering (NRS) of L ‐tryptophan in either 0.5 M aqueous solution (NRS‐AS) or solid powder (NRS‐SP), the intensified signals by SERS have made the SERS investigation at a lower molecular concentration (5 × 10−4 M ) possible. Ab initio calculations at the B3LYP/6‐311G level have been carried out to predict the optimal structure and vibrational wavenumbers for the zwitterionic form of L ‐tryptophan. Facilitated with the theoretical prediction, the observed vibrational modes of L ‐tryptophan in the NRS‐AS, NRS‐SP, and SERS spectra have been analyzed. In the spectroscopic observations, there are no significant changes for the vibrational bands of the indole ring in either NRS‐AS, NRS‐SP, or SERS. In contrast, spectral intensities involving the vibrations of carboxylate and amino groups are weak in NRS‐AS and NRS‐SP, but strong in SERS. The intensity enhancement in the SERS spectrum can reach 103–104‐fold magnification. On the basis of spectroscopic analysis, the carboxylate and amino groups of L ‐tryptophan are determined to be the preferential terminal groups to attach onto the surfaces of Ag nanoparticles in the SERS measurement. Adsorption of 4,4′‐thiobisbenzenethiol (4,4′‐TBBT) on a colloidal silver surface and a roughened silver electrode surface was investigated by means of surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for the first time, which indicates that 4,4′‐TBBT is chemisorbed on the colloidal silver surface as dithiolates by losing two H‐atoms of the S H bond, while as monothiolates on the roughened silver electrode. The different orientations of the molecules on both silver surfaces indicate the different adsorption behaviors of 4,4′‐TBBT in the two systems. It is inferred from the SERS signal that the two aromatic rings in 4,4′‐TBBT molecule are parallel to the colloidal silver surface as seen from the disappearance of νC H band (3054 cm−1), which is a vibrational mode to be used to determine the orientation of a molecule on metals according to the surface selection rule, while on the roughened silver electrode surface they are tilted to the surface as seen from the enhanced signal of νC H. The orientation of the C‐S bond is tilted with respect to the silver surface in both cases as inferred from the strong enhancement of the νC S. SERS spectra of 4,4′‐TBBT on the roughened silver electrode with different applied potentials reveal that the enhancement of 4,4′‐TBBT on the roughened silver electrode surface may be related to the chemical mechanism (CM). More importantly, the adsorption of 4,4′‐TBBT on the silver electrode is expected to be useful to covalently adsorb metal nanoparticles through the free S H bond to form two‐ or three‐ dimensional nanostructures. There has been a surge of interest in the surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of p‐aminothiophenol (PATP), since its SERS spectra are dependent on the measurement conditions. However, there is a dispute over the origin of the so‐called b2 modes in SERS spectrum of PATP recently. Some researchers propose that these bands come from selective chemical enhancement, while others conclude that these bands are due to the ag modes of p,p'‐dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB) produced from PATP by surface photoreaction. To solve this problem, we have studied the SERS spectra of PATP on Au and Ag nanoparticles by in situ measurement under various conditions. The results proved that the b2 modes are not due to PATP but due to the ag modes of DMAB. The key of the method is to ensure the SERS spectra taken from the same point in reduplicative measurements. The result showed that the stable SERS spectrum of PATP was essentially from DMAB. The reversibility of the PATP SERS spectra in previous studies is due to the variety of the measurement points, which is in nature of different PATP conversions to DMAB under different conditions. FT‐IR and FT‐Raman spectra of methyl(2‐methyl‐4,6–dinitrophenylsulfanyl)ethanoate (MDIE) were recorded and analyzed. Surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra were recorded in silver colloid and silver electrode. The vibrational wavenumbers were computed using HF/6‐31G* and B3LYP/6‐31G* basis. The data obtained from vibrational wavenumber calculations are used to assign vibrational bands obtained in infrared and Raman spectroscopies as well as in SERS of the studied molecule. The first hyperpolarizability and infrared intensities are reported. The geometrical parameters of the title compound are in agreement with the reported similar derivatives. The presence of new bands at 1045 and 948 cm−1 in the SERS spectrum in silver electrode is related to the change in orientation of the molecule with respect to the metal surface. In silver colloid SERS spectrum, the methyl group attached to the methoxy carbonyl group is close to the metal surface, whereas on silver electrode the methyl group attached to the phenyl ring is close to the metal surface. IR, Raman and surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of 5‐sulphosalicylic acid were recorded and analysed. The vibrational wavenumbers were computed by density functional theoretical (DFT) method using B3LYP/6–31G* basis. The bands due to the stretching modes CO, C S and SO2 are intense in the SERS spectrum. The C H stretching mode also appears in the SERS spectrum. The molecule is found to adsorb through both the carboxyl and sulphonyl groups. A possible tilted orientation of the molecule is suggested. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this article, a novel technique for the fabrication of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active silver clusters on glassy carbon (GC) has been proposed. It was found that silver clusters could be formed on a layer of positively charged poly(diallyldimethylammonium) (PDDA) anchored to a carbon surface by 4‐aminobenzoic acid when a drop containing silver nanoparticles was deposited on it. The characteristics of the obtained silver clusters have been investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), SERS and an SERS‐based Raman mapping technique in the form of line scanning. The AFM image shows that the silver clusters consist of several silver nanoparticles and the size of the clusters is in the range 80–100 nm. The SERS spectra of different concentrations of rhodamine 6G (R6G) on the silver clusters were obtained and compared with those from a silver colloid. The apparent enhancement factor (AEF) was estimated to be as large as 3.1 × 104 relative to silver colloid, which might have resulted from the presence of ‘hot‐spots’ at the silver clusters, providing a highly localized electromagnetic field for the large enhancement of the SERS spectra of R6G. The minimum electromagnetic enhancement factor (EEF) is estimated to be 5.4 × 107 by comparison with the SERS spectra of R6G on the silver clusters and on the bare GC surface. SERS‐based Raman mapping technique in the form of line scanning further illustrates the good SERS activity and reproducibility on the silver clusters. Finally, 4‐mercaptopyridine (4‐Mpy) was chosen as an analyte and the lowest detected concentration was investigated by the SERS‐active silver clusters. A concentration of 1.6 × 10−10 M 4‐Mpy could be detected with the SERS‐active silver clusters, showing the great potential of the technique in practical applications of microanalysis with high sensitivity. We achieved single‐molecule surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SM‐SERS) spectra from ultralow concentrations (10−15 M) of fullerene C60 on uniformly assembled Au nanoparticles. It was found that resonant excitation at 785 nm is a powerful tool to probe SM‐SERS in this system. The appearance of additional bands and splitting of some vibrational modes were observed because of the symmetry reduction of the adsorbed molecule and a relaxation in the surface selection rules. Time‐evolved spectral fluctuation and ‘hot spot’ dependence in the SM‐SERS spectra were demonstrated to result from the single‐molecule Raman behavior of the spherical C60 on Au nanoparticles. Raman and surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of dapsone by using colloidal silver nanoparticles have been recorded. Density functional theory was used for the optimization of ground state geometries and simulation of the vibrational spectrum of this molecule. The SERS spectrum with a large silver cluster as a model metallic surface was simulated for the first time. Taking into account the experimental and calculated Raman as well as the SERS normal modes and the corresponding assignments, along with the modeling of the free dapsone and the one in the presence of the colloidal silver nanoparticles, the importance of the sulfone group on the SERS effect in dapsone was inferred. Surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) on silver and gold colloid gels formed by a low molecular weight organic gelator, bis‐(S‐phenylalanine) oxalyl amide, was obtained. Strong Raman signals dominate in the SERS spectra of hydrogels containing silver nanoparticles prepared by citrate and borohydride reduction methods, whereas broad bands of low intensity are detected in the spectra of gold colloid gels. Resemblance between Raman spectrum of the crystalline substance and the SERS spectra of the silver nanoparticle–hydrogel composites implies the electromagnetic nature of the signal enhancement. A change in Raman intensity of the benzene and amide II bands caused by an increase in temperature and concentration indicates that the gelling molecules are strongly attached through the benzene moieties to the metal nanoparticles while participating in gel formation by intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the adjacent oxalyl amide groups. Transmission electron microscopy reveals a dense gel structure in the close vicinity of the enhancing metal particles for both silver colloid gels. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of 2‐amino‐5‐nitropyridine (ANP) adsorbed on colloidal silver triangular nanoplates were obtained using samples with different mean sizes and surface plasmon frequencies. The relative SERS enhancement factor for each sample was determined by the analysis of the normalized SERS excitation profiles of ANP vibrational modes for nanoplates in suspension, without aggregation. The SERS profiles are blue‐shifted in relation to the localized surface plasmon peak. The detailed characterization of both morphology and concentration of the samples in addition to a rigorous normalization of the SERS spectra allowed a quantitative correlation between the SERS profiles and the mean size of the nanoplates. This correlation indicated the existence of an optimum size of the nanoplates for maximum Raman enhancement. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The FT‐IR and FT‐Raman spectra of anilinium sulfate were recorded and analyzed. The surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) was recorded from a silver electrode. The vibrational wavenumbers of the compound have been computed using the Hartree‐Fock/6‐31G* basis and compared with the experimental values. The molecule is adsorbed on the silver surface with the benzene ring in a tilted orientation. The presence of amino and sulfate group vibrations in the SERS spectrum reveal the interaction between amino and sulfate groups with the silver surface. The direction of the charge transfer contribution to SERS has been discussed from the frontier orbital theory. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) and FT‐Raman spectra of 4‐ethyl‐N‐(2′‐hydroxy‐5′‐nitrophenyl)benzamide were recorded and analyzed. A surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectrum was recorded in silver colloid. The vibrational wavenumbers and corresponding vibrational assignments were examined theoretically using the Gaussian03 set of quantum chemistry codes. The red shift of the NH stretching wavenumber in the infrared spectrum from the computational wavenumber indicates the weakening of the NH bond resulting in proton transfer to the neighboring oxygen atom. The simultaneous IR and Raman activation of the CO stretching mode gives the charge transfer interaction through a π‐conjugated path. The presence of methyl modes in the SERS spectrum indicates the nearness of the methyl group to the metal surface, which affects the orientation and metal molecule interaction. The first hyperpolarizability and predicted infrared intensities are reported. The calculated first hyperpolarizability is comparable with the reported values of similar derivatives and is an attractive subject for future studies of nonlinear optics. Optimized geometrical parameters of the title compound are in agreement with reported structures. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this study, monodisperse bimetallic nanorods with gold (Au) nanorod core and silver (Ag) shell (Au@AgNRs) were synthesized through seed‐mediated growth process by reduction of AgNO3 using Au nanorods with narrow size and shape distribution as seeds. With increasing the used amount of AgNO3, the Ag shell thickness of their lateral facets is raised faster than that of their two tips, leading to a decrease of their aspect ratios. Four plasmon bands are observable on the extinction spectra of Au@AgNRs, which are attributed to the longitudinal dipolar plasmon mode, transverse dipolar plasmon mode, and octupolar plasmon mode of the core‐shell structured bimetallic nanorods, respectively. As their Ag shell thickness increases, their longitudinal plasmon band blue‐shifts notably with the transverse plasmon band blue‐shifting and the two octupolar plasmon bands red‐shifting slightly, due to the decrease of their aspect ratios and enhancement of Ag plasmon resonance contribution. When used as surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate for probing minute amounts of 4‐mercaptobenzoic acid in aqueous solution, Au@AgNRs have much stronger SERS activity than Au nanorods, and the obtained Raman signals are highly reproducible arising from their excellent monodispersity. Their SERS activity is remarkably increased with their Ag shell thickness thanks to the enhancing surface electric field and the chemical enhancement associated with electronic ligand effect. Infrared, Raman and surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of 3‐(1‐phenylpropan‐2‐ylamino)propanenitrile (fenproporex) have been recorded. Density functional theory (DFT) with the B3LYP functional was used for optimizations of ground state geometries and simulation of Raman and SERS vibrational spectra of this molecule. Bands of the vibrational spectra were assigned in detail. The comparison of SERS spectra obtained by using colloidal silver and gold nanoparticles with the corresponding Raman spectrum reveals enhancement and shifts in bands, suggesting a possible partial charge‐transfer mechanism in the SERS effect. Information about the orientation of fenproporex on the nanometer‐sized metal structures is also obtained. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Silver nanoparticles deposited on various ‘inert’ porous materials (mainly Al2O3 and TiO2) are often used as substrates for surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) measurements. In this study, we used the sputter deposition technique to cover tubular arrays of Al2O3 and TiO2 with Ag nanoparticles. Raman spectra of pyridine (as a probe molecule) and of two selected dyes (5‐(4‐dimethylaminobenzylidene)rhodanine and 5‐(4‐(dimethylamino)benzylidene)‐3‐(3‐methoxypropyl)rhodanine) adsorbed on fabricated Ag/TiO2‐n/Ti and Ag/Al2O3‐n/Al substrates were measured. We found that the SERS spectra of pyridine adsorbed on Ag nanoparticles deposited on an Al2O3‐n/Al substrate are distinctly different from those measured for an Ag/TiO2‐n/Ti composite. Similar effects were observed for dyes adsorbed on the surface of both composites. The spectral differences between two kinds of composites (Ag/TiO2‐n/Ti and Ag/Al2O3‐n/Al) are discussed in terms of (1) the modified electronic structure of the Ag nanoparticles due to their interaction with different substrate materials and (2) the different atomic topology of the metal particles thus deposited on the surfaces of the substrates. Composite samples were also studied with the aid of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) to reveal their characteristic morphological and chemical features.
