An approximation method for strictly pseudocontractive mappings

Let K$K$ be a closed convex subset of a q$q$-uniformly smooth separable Banach space, T:K→K$T:K\to K$ a strictly pseudocontractive mapping, and f:K→K$f:K\to K$ an L$L$-Lispschitzian strongly pseudocontractive mapping. For any t∈(0,1)$t\in (0,1)$, let _xt$x_t$ be the unique fixed point of tf+(1-t)T$\mathit{tf}+(1-t)T$. We prove that if T$T$ has a fixed point, then {_xt}$\{x_t\}$ converges to a fixed point of T$T$ as t$t$ approaches to 0.     

On the norming constants for normal maxima

Given n   independent standard normal random variables, it is well known that their maxima _Mn$M_n$ can be normalized such that their distribution converges to the Gumbel law. In a remarkable study, Hall proved that the Kolmogorov distance _dn$d_n$ between the normalized _Mn$M_n$ and its associated limit distribution is less than 3/log?n$3/\log ?n$. In the present study, we propose a different set of norming constants that allow this upper bound to be decreased with _dn≤C(m)/log?n$d_n\le C(m)/\log ?n$ for n≥m≥5$n\ge m\ge 5$. Furthermore, the function C(m)$C(m)$ is computed explicitly, which satisfies C(m)≤1$C(m)\le 1$ and _limm→∞?C(m)=1/3${\lim }_{m\to \infty }?C(m)=1/3$. As a consequence, some new and effective norming constants are provided using the asymptotic expansion of a Lambert W type function.     

On the nonexistence of a relation between σ-left-porosity and σ-right-porosity

Given an arbitrarily weak notion of left-〈f〉$〈f〉$-porosity and an arbitrarily strong notion of right-〈g〉$〈g〉$-porosity, we construct an example of closed subset of R$\mathbb{R}$ which is not σ  -left-〈f〉$〈f〉$-porous and is right-〈g〉$〈g〉$-porous. We also briefly summarize the relations between three different definitions of porosity controlled by a function; we then observe that our construction gives the example for any combination of these definitions of left-porosity and right-porosity.     

Description of extended eigenvalues and extended eigenvectors of integration operators on the Wiener algebra

In the present paper we consider the Volterra integration operator V   on the Wiener algebra W(D)$W(\mathbb{D})$ of analytic functions on the unit disc D$\mathbb{D}$ of the complex plane C$\mathbb{C}$. A complex number λ$\lambda$ is called an extended eigenvalue of V if there exists a nonzero operator A   satisfying the equation AV=λVA$\mathit{AV}=\lambda \mathit{VA}$. We prove that the set of all extended eigenvalues of V   is precisely the set C?{0}$\mathbb{C}?\{0\}$, and describe in terms of Duhamel operators and composition operators the set of corresponding extended eigenvectors of V$V$. The similar result for some weighted shift operator on _?p${?}_p$ spaces is also obtained.     

Asymptotic expansions for elliptic-like regularizations of semilinear evolution equations

Consider in a real Hilbert space H the Cauchy problem (_P0$P_0$): u^′(t)+Au(t)+Bu(t)=f(t)$u^{\prime }(t)+Au(t)+Bu(t)=f(t)$, 0≤t≤T$0\le t\le T$; u(0)=_u0$u(0)=u_0$, where −A   is the infinitesimal generator of a _C0$C_0$-semigroup of contractions, B is a nonlinear monotone operator, and f is a given H-valued function. Inspired by the excellent book on singular perturbations by J.L. Lions, we associate with problem (_P0$P_0$) the following regularization (_Pε$P_{\epsilon }$): −εu^″(t)+u^′(t)+Au(t)+Bu(t)=f(t)$-\epsilon u^{″}(t)+u^{\prime }(t)+Au(t)+Bu(t)=f(t)$, 0≤t≤T$0\le t\le T$; u(0)=_u0$u(0)=u_0$, u^′(T)=_uT$u^{\prime }(T)=u_T$, where ε>0$\epsilon >0$ is a small parameter. We investigate existence, uniqueness and higher regularity for problem (_Pε$P_{\epsilon }$). Then we establish asymptotic expansions of order zero, and of order one, for the solution of (_Pε$P_{\epsilon }$). Problem (_Pε$P_{\epsilon }$) turns out to be regularly perturbed of order zero, and singularly perturbed of order one, with respect to the norm of C([0,T];H)$C([0,T];H)$. However, the boundary layer of order one is not visible through the norm of L²(0,T;H)$L^2(0,T;H)$.     

Invertible bimodule categories over the representation category of a Hopf algebra

For any finite-dimensional Hopf algebra H   we construct a group homomorphism BiGal(H)→BrPic(Rep(H))$\mathrm{BiGal}(H)\to \text{BrPic}(\mathrm{Rep}(H))$, from the group of equivalence classes of H  -biGalois objects to the group of equivalence classes of invertible exact Rep(H)$\mathrm{Rep}(H)$-bimodule categories. We discuss the injectivity of this map. We exemplify in the case H=_Tq$H=T_q$ is a Taft Hopf algebra and for this we classify all exact indecomposable Rep(_Tq)$\mathrm{Rep}(T_q)$-bimodule categories.     

Inequivalent representations of matroids over prime fields

It is proved that for each prime field GF(p)$\mathit{GF}(p)$, there is an integer _np$n_p$ such that a 4-connected matroid has at most _np$n_p$ inequivalent representations over GF(p)$\mathit{GF}(p)$. We also prove a stronger theorem that obtains the same conclusion for matroids satisfying a connectivity condition, intermediate between 3-connectivity and 4-connectivity that we term “k-coherence”.     

On rigidity of Roe algebras

Roe algebras are C^?$C^{?}$-algebras built using large scale (or ‘coarse’) aspects of a metric space (X,d)$(X,d)$. In the special case that X=Γ$X=\Gamma$ is a finitely generated group and d   is a word metric, the simplest Roe algebra associated to (Γ,d)$(\Gamma ,d)$ is isomorphic to the crossed product C^?$C^{?}$-algebra l^∞(Γ)_?rΓ$l^{\infty }(\Gamma ){?}_r\Gamma$.     

Hyperspaces of Keller compacta and their orbit spaces

A compact convex subset K   of a topological linear space is called a Keller compactum if it is affinely homeomorphic to an infinite-dimensional compact convex subset of the Hilbert space _?2${?}_2$. Let G be a compact topological group acting affinely on a Keller compactum K   and let 2^K$2^K$ denote the hyperspace of all non-empty compact subsets of K endowed with the Hausdorff metric topology and the induced action of G  . Further, let cc(K)$cc(K)$ denote the subspace of 2^K$2^K$ consisting of all compact convex subsets of K. In a particular case, the main result of the paper asserts that if K   is centrally symmetric, then the orbit spaces 2^K/G$2^K/G$ and cc(K)/G$cc(K)/G$ are homeomorphic to the Hilbert cube.
