Some components of fusion thermonuclear reactors, such as divertors, plasma limiters, or first-wall armor, are believed to be subjected to operating conditions characterized by extremely high thermal loads. It is therefore necessary to remove from the surface of these components very high heat fluxes, ranging from 2 to 60 MW/m2. Water subcooled flow boiling, under conditions of high mass flux, high liquid subcooling, and small to intermediate channel diameter, can accomodate these very high heat fluxes. Further enhancement of the upper limit of cooling, the critical heat flux (CHF), can be obtained by making use of turbulence promoters such as twisted tapes and coiled wires even if coupled with a relevant increase in pressure drop. An overview is presented of recent achievements obtained in water subcooled flow boiling CHF under operating conditions of interest to the thermal hydraulic design of fusion reactors. Observed basic parametric trends—CHF as a function of mass flux, pressure, subcooling, and channel geometry—are outlined, together with findings on the use of CHF enhancement techniques. From experiments it was seen that water subcooled flow boiling allows CHF conditions as high as 228 MW/m2 to be achieved under extreme geometric and thermal hydraulic conditions. On the other hand, design and engineering boundary conditions limit variation in these conditions, and a suitable compromise has not yet been reached. Predictive tools are presented for the evaluation of subcooled flow boiling CHF both in straight tubes and with twisted tapes, and are assessed with reference to recent available experimental data.

Although several indications for practical applications can be found in recent achievements, a full understanding of the basic mechanisms of heat transfer and CHF in subcooled flow boiling has not yet been achieved. Future research to overcome the present lack of knowledge in this field is suggested.  相似文献

Saturated flow boiling of environmentally acceptable nonionic surfactant solutions of Alkyl (8–16) was compared to that of pure water. The concentration of surfactant solutions was in the range of 100–1000 ppm. The liquid flowed in an annular gap of 2.5 and 4.4 mm between two vertical tubes. The heat was transferred from the inner heated tube to two-phase flow in the range of mass flux from 5 to 18 kg/m2 s and heat flux from 40 to 200 kW/m2. Boiling curves of water were found to be heat flux and channel gap size dependent but essentially mass flux independent. An addition of surfactant to the water produced a large number of bubbles of small diameter, which, at high heat fluxes, tend to cover the entire heater surface with a vapor blanket. It was found that the heat transfer increased at low values of relative surfactant concentration C/C0, reaches a maximum close to the value of C/C0 = 1 (where C0 = 300 ppm is the critical micelle concentration) and decreased with further increase in the amount of additive. The dependence of the maximal values of the relative heat transfer enhancement, obtained at the value of relative concentration of C/C0 = 1, on the boiling number Bo may be presented as single curve for both gap sizes and the whole range of considered concentrations.  相似文献

This paper reports an experimental investigation of the heat transfer performance of the new low-GWP refrigerants, R1234yf and R1234ze(E), during flow boiling heat transfer inside a horizontal high porosity copper foam with 5 Pores Per Inch (PPI). Metal foams are a class of cellular structured materials consisting of a stochastic distribution of interconnected pores; these materials have been proposed as effective solutions for heat transfer enhancement during both single and two-phase heat transfer. R1234yf and R1234ze(E) refrigerants are appealing alternatives of the more traditional R134a by virtue of their negligible values of GWP and normal boiling temperatures close to that of R134a, which make them suitable solution in several different applications, such as: refrigeration and air conditioning and electronic thermal management. This work compares the two-phase heat transfer behaviour of these new HFO refrigerants, studying the boiling process inside a porous medium and permitting to understand their effective heat transfer capabilities. The experimental measurements were carried out by imposing three different heat fluxes: 50, 75, and 100 kW m−2, at a constant saturation temperature of 30 °C; the refrigerant mass velocity was varied between 50 and 200 kg m−2 s−1, whilst the mean vapour quality varied from 0.2 to 0.95. The two-phase heat transfer and pressure drop performance of the two new HFO refrigerants is compared against that of the more traditional R134a.  相似文献

The experimental study on heat transfer of R417A and R22 flow boiling inside a horizontal smooth and two internally grooved tubes with different geometrical parameters was conducted. Based on the experimental results, evaporation heat transfer characteristics of R417A and R22 flowing in different tubes, the influence of micro-fin geometrical parameters, vapor quality and mass flux of refrigerants on heat transfer enhancement factors, and the difference of enhancement factors between R417A and R22 were analyzed and discussed. The result indicates: whether for R22 or for R417A, the enhancement effect of Tube III having the narrower distance between micro-fins excels than Tube II. The influence of vapor qualities and mass fluxes on enhancement factors for R417A is different from R22. And the difference of enhancement factors between R417A and R22 appears different cases at different vapor quality regions.  相似文献

The presence of surfactant additives in water was found to enhance the boiling heat transfer significantly. The objective of the present investigation is to compare the bubble growth in water to that of a surfactant solution with negligible environmental impact. The study was conducted at two values of heat fluxes to clarify the effect of the heat flux on the dynamics of bubble nucleation. The bubble growth under condition of pool boiling in water and non-ionic surfactant solution was studied using high speed video technique. The bubble generation was studied on a horizontal flat surface; and the natural roughness of the surface was used to produce the bubbles.  相似文献

Flow boiling heat transfer in a single circular micro-channel of 0.19 mm ID has been experimentally investigated with R123 and R134a for various experimental conditions: heat fluxes (10, 15, 20 kW/m2), mass velocities (314, 392, 470 kg/m2 s), vapor qualities (0.2–0.85) and different saturation pressures (158, 208 kPa for R123; 900, 1100 kPa for R134a). The heat transfer trends between R123 and R134a are clearly distinguished. Whether nucleate boiling is suppressed at low vapor quality or not determines the heat transfer trend and mechanism in the flow boiling of micro-channels. High convective heat transfer coefficients in the two-phase flow of micro-channels enables nucleate boiling to be suppressed even at low vapor quality, depending on the wall superheat requirement for nucleate boiling. In the case of early suppression of nucleate boiling, specifically R123, heat transfer is dominated by evaporation of thin liquid films around elongated bubbles. In the contrary case, namely R134a, nucleate boiling is dominant heat transfer mechanism until its suppression at high vapor quality and then two-phase forced convection heat transfer becomes dominant. It is similar to the heat transfer characteristic of macro-channels except the enhancement of nucleate boiling and the short forced convection region.  相似文献

We present the results of a study of turbulent drag reduction in a small circulating loop using surfactant solutions with excess counterion. In addition, these solutions were used in measurements of heat transfer, both in pipe flow and in an impinging jet. Both frictional drag and heat transfer were reduced in the pipe flow experiments. Measurements of heat transfer in the impinging jet revealed a dependence on the molar concentration ratio of the counterion. When the counterion was added at a molar concentration 30 times higher than that of the surfactant, the resulting surfactant solution did not reduce the rate of heat transfer in the impinging jet. By using this surfactant system in an impinging jet, we show both a reduction in pipe friction and normal heat transfer potential in a circulating heat exchange system. In order to investigate this difference in heat transfer between pipe flows and impinging jet flows, a comparison was made of the wall shear stress between these two flow regimes. The estimated wall shear stress was of the same order in both flows, and thus was not considered to be the primary cause of the difference in heat transfer. It is instead suggested that the micellar structure of the surfactant is influenced by a compressive deformation of the impinging flow in a manner that is different from the shear deformation observed in pipe flow.  相似文献

By using unique experimental techniques and carefully constructed experimental apparatus, the characteristics of flow boiling of water in microscale were investigated using a single horizontal rectangular microchannel. A polydimethylsiloxane rectangular microchannel (Dh = 103.5 and 133 μm) was fabricated by using the replica molding technique, a kind of soft lithography. A piecewise serpentine platinum microheater array on a Pyrex substrate was fabricated with the surface micromachining MEMS technique. Real time flow visualization of the phase change phenomena inside the microchannel was performed using a high speed CCD camera with microscope. The experimental local boiling heat transfer coefficients were studied, and single bubble inception, growth, and departure, as well as elongated bubble behavior were analyzed to elucidate the microscale heat transfer mechanisms. Tests were performed for mass fluxes of 77.5, 154.9, and 309.8 kg/m2 s and heat fluxes of 180–500 kW/m2. The effects of mass flux, heat flux, and vapor qualities on flow boiling heat transfer in a microchannel were studied.  相似文献

In the present experimental study, a correlation is proposed to represent the heat transfer coefficients of the boiling flows through horizontal rectangular channels with low aspect ratios. The gap between the upper and the lower plates of each channel ranges from 0.4 to 2 mm while the channel width being fixed to 20 mm. Refrigerant 113 was used as the test fluid. The mass flux ranges from 50 to 200 kg/m2 s and the channel walls were uniformly heated up to 15 kW/m2. The quality range covers from 0.15 to 0.75 and the flow pattern appeared to be annular. The modified Lockhart–Martinelli correlation for the frictional pressure drop was confirmed to be within an accuracy of ±20%. The heat transfer coefficients increase with the mass flux and the local quality; however the effect of the heat flux appears to be minor. At the low mass flux condition, which is more likely to be with the smaller gap size, the heat transfer rate is primarily controlled by the liquid film thickness. A modified form of the enhancement factor F for the heat transfer coefficient in the range of ReLF200 well correlates the experimental data within the deviation of ±20%. The Kandlikar's flow boiling correlation covers the higher mass flux range (ReLF>200) with 10.7% mean deviation.  相似文献

Convective boiling of HCFC123 and FC72 in 0.19, 0.3 and 0.51 mm ID tubes is investigated. The experimental setup as well as the data reduction procedure has carefully been designed, so that the relative uncertainty interval of the measured heat transfer coefficient in microtubes is kept within ±10%. Up to 70 K liquid superheat over the saturation temperature is observed at low heat and mass fluxes. The onset of the superheat is found to be dependent on the mass flux and the boiling number of the refrigerant examined. In the saturated boiling regime, the heat transfer characteristics are much different from those in conventional-size tubes. The heat transfer coefficient is monotonically decreased with increasing the vapor quality, and becomes independent of the mass flux. Most empirical formulas are not in accordance with the present experimental data. Since the prediction using the nucleate boiling term of Kandlikar’s empirical correlations coincides with the present results, the convection effect should be minor in microtubes. On the other hand, the pressure loss characteristics are qualitatively in accordance with the conventional correlation formula while quantitatively much lower. These phenomena can be explained by the fact that the annular flow prevails in microtubes.  相似文献

Jet impingement boiling is very efficient in cooling of hot surfaces as a part of the impinging liquid evaporates. Because of its importance to many cooling procedures, investigations on basic mechanisms of jet impingement boiling heat transfer are needed. Until now, most of the experimental studies, carried out under steady-state conditions, used a heat flux controlled system and were limited by the critical heat flux (CHF). The present study focuses on steady-state experiments along the entire boiling curve for hot plate temperatures of up to 700°C. A test section has been built up simulating a hot plate. It is divided into 8 independently heated modules of 10 mm length to enable local heat transfer measurements. By means of temperature controlled systems for each module local steady-state experiments in the whole range between single phase heat transfer and film boiling are possible. By solving the two dimensional inverse heat conduction problem, the local heat flux and the corresponding wall temperature on the surface of each module can be computed. The measurements show important differences between boiling curves measured at the stagnation line and those obtained in the parallel flow region. At the stagnation line, the transition boiling regime is characterised by very high heat fluxes, extended to large wall superheats. Inversely, boiling curves in the parallel flow region are very near to classical ones obtained for forced convection boiling. The analysis of temperature fluctuations measured at a depth of 0.8 mm from the boiling surface enables some conclusions on the boiling mechanism in the different boiling regimes.  相似文献

An experimental study was performed to understand the nucleate boiling heat transfer of water–CuO nanoparticles suspension (nanofluids) at different operating pressures and different nanoparticle mass concentrations. The experimental apparatus is a miniature flat heat pipe (MFHP) with micro-grooved heat transfer surface of its evaporator. The experimental results indicate that the operating pressure has great influence on the nucleate boiling characteristics in the MFHP evaporator. The heat transfer coefficient and the critical heat flux (CHF) of nanofluids increase greatly with decreasing pressure as compared with those of water. The heat transfer coefficient and the CHF of nanofluids can increase about 25% and 50%, respectively, at atmospheric pressure whereas about 100% and 150%, respectively, at the pressure of 7.4 kPa. Nanoparticle mass concentration also has significant influence on the boiling heat transfer and the CHF of nanofluids. The heat transfer coefficient and the CHF increase slowly with the increase of the nanoparticle mass concentration at low concentration conditions. However, when the nanoparticle mass concentration is over 1.0 wt%, the CHF enhancement is close to a constant number and the heat transfer coefficient deteriorates. There exists an optimum mass concentration for nanofluids which corresponds to the maximum heat transfer enhancement and this optimum mass concentration is 1.0 wt% at all test pressures. The experiment confirmed that the boiling heat transfer characteristics of the MFHP evaporator can evidently be strengthened by using water/CuO nanofluids.  相似文献

In this paper, The drag reduction characteristics of surfactant solutions have been experimentally studied, as well as, the shear viscosities of turbulent drag-reducing surfactant solution have been measured as a function of concentration, shear rate and temperature by using AG-G2 (TA Instruments, New Castle, USA) rheometer. In comparison the rheological property with the macroscopic behavior of the solutions in turbulent channel flow, a deeper insight into the mechanisms of drag-reducing surfactant solution has been obtained. For no shear induced structure of surfactant solutions they just show features shear thinning, but the drag reduction is very significant phenomenon. Surfactant solution of the shear induced structure is not a surfactant fluid drag reduction of the necessary elements.  相似文献

Effect of surfactant additives on nucleate pool boiling heat transfer of refrigerant-based nanofluid was investigated experimentally. Three types of surfactants including Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS), Cetyltrimethyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB) and Sorbitan Monooleate (Span-80) were used in the experiments. The refrigerant-based nanofluid was formed from Cu nanoparticles and refrigerant R113. The test surface is horizontal with the average roughness of 1.6 μm. Test conditions include a saturation pressure of 101.3 kPa, heat fluxes from 10 to 80 kW m−2, surfactant concentrations from 0 to 5000 ppm (parts per million by weight), and nanoparticle concentrations from 0 to 1.0 wt.%. The experimental results indicate that the presence of surfactant enhances the nucleate pool boiling heat transfer of refrigerant-based nanofluid on most conditions, but deteriorates the nucleate pool boiling heat transfer at high surfactant concentrations. The ratio of nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficient of refrigerant-based nanofluid with surfactant to that without surfactant (defined as surfactant enhancement ratio, SER) are in the ranges of 1.12-1.67, 0.94-1.39, and 0.85-1.29 for SDS, CTAB and Span-80, respectively, and the values of SER are in the order of SDS > CTAB > Span-80, which is opposite to the order of surfactant density values. The SER increases with the increase of surfactant concentration and then decreases, presenting the maximum values at 2000, 500 and 1000 ppm for SDS, CTAB and Span-80, respectively. At a fixed surfactant concentration, the SER increases with the decrease of nanoparticle concentration. A nucleate pool boiling heat transfer correlation for refrigerant-based nanofluid with surfactant is proposed, and it agrees with 92% of the experimental data within a deviation of ±25%.  相似文献

Natural convection boiling of water and surfactants at atmospheric pressure in narrow horizontal annular channels was studied experimentally in the range of Bond numbers Bo = 0.185–1.52. The flow pattern was visualized by high-speed video recording to identify the different regimes of boiling of water and surfactants. The channel length was 24 mm and 36 mm, the gap size was 0.45, 1.2, 2.2, and 3.7 mm. The heat flux was in the range of 20–500 kW/m2, the concentration of surfactant solutions was varied from 10 to 600 ppm. For water boiling at Bond numbers Bo < 1 the CHF in restricted space is lower than that in unconfined space. This effect increases with increasing the channel length. For water at Bond number Bo = 1.52, boiling can almost be considered as unconfined. Additive of surfactant led to enhancement of heat transfer compared to water boiling in the same gap size, however, this effect decreased with decreasing gap size. For the same gap size, CHF in surfactant solutions was significantly lower than that in water. Hysteresis was observed for boiling in degraded surfactant solutions.  相似文献

Nucleate pool boiling of ZrO2 based aqueous nanofluid has been studied. Though enhancement in nucleate boiling heat transfer has been observed at low volume fraction of solid dispersion, the rate of heat transfer falls with the increase in solid concentration and eventually becomes inferior even to pure water. While surfactants increase the rate of heat transfer, addition of surfactant to the nanofluid shows a drastic deterioration in nucleate boiling heat transfer. Further, the boiling of nanofluid renders the heating surface smoother. Repeated runs of experiments with the same surface give a continuous decrease in the rate of boiling heat transfer.  相似文献

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) offers the opportunity to investigate physically and geometrically complex systems with high fidelity. Its applicability to multiphase flow, and particularly boiling heat transfer, is currently limited by the lack of appropriate closure models to describe all relevant phenomena. In this paper, we present an original subcooled flow boiling modeling framework for CFD, which aims at consistently and accurately characterizing the key physics that affect heat transfer at the boiling surface. The new framework introduces a fully mechanistic representation of heterogeneous boiling that improves numerical robustness and reduces sensitivity to closure coefficients. The proposed formulation is inspired by new experimental insight, and significantly extends the existing boiling models by capturing the effects of (i) the microlayer on surface evaporation, (ii) the boiling surface, and (iii) bubbles sliding along the boiling surface. A new statistical treatment of the location and mutual interactions of bubbles on the surface allows for mechanistic prediction of the dry surface area, an important quantity that affects the boiling heat transfer coefficient. This approach lends itself naturally to extension to very high heat fluxes, potentially up to the critical heat flux. An assessment and sensitivity study of the model is presented for a range of mass fluxes (500–1250 kg/m2/s), heat fluxes (100–1600 kW/m2), inlet subcoolings (5, 10, 15 K), and pressures (1, 1.5, 2 bars), demonstrating improved robustness and predictive accuracy at all tested conditions in comparison to traditional heat partitioning approaches, including high heat fluxes, where classic models often fail to converge. Lastly, the framework proposed here should not be viewed as another heat partitioning model, but rather as a general platform that allows incorporation of advanced models for each physical phenomenon considered, leveraging the growing insight generated by modern experimental diagnostics for boiling heat transfer.  相似文献

Natural convection boiling of water and surfactant solutions in a confined space between two vertical plates was studied experimentally in the range of heat flux 19–170 kW/m2. The surfactant used was Alkyl (8–16) Glucoside having negligible environmental impact. The gap size was changed in the range of s = 1–80 mm, the concentration of surfactant solutions was changed in the range of C = 200–600 ppm. Generally, an addition of surfactant leads to an enhancement of heat transfer compared to water boiling at the same gap size. Enhancement of the heat transfer depending on the solution concentration at fixed gap size yields maximum value at the solution concentration close to the critical micelle concentration. The effect of confined space on a bubble dynamic was studied. Temperature field on the heater was determined using the infrared thermography technique. Quasi periodic wall temperature fluctuations were observed in the regime of high heat flux. An increase in the Bond number leads to an increase in the dimensionless frequency of the heated wall temperature fluctuations. The correlation between the dimensionless parameter of heat transfer and the Bond number under condition of quasi periodic boiling was derived and discussed.  相似文献

Surfactant solution flow behavior is of great importance to both the chemical and consumer product industries. Most studies on the flow behavior of surfactant solutions, however, have focused on the dilute regime. Seldom reported is rheology in the highly concentrated regime where typically these surfactants are processed and delivered. First, we present here the phase diagram for the ternary system: water and two anionic surfactants (sodium salt of lauric and oleic acid) at different temperatures. Then, we present both linear viscoelastic and steady shear flow results in the high (70 to 90%) surfactant regime. We find that high values of the shear modulus are directly dependent on the quantity of surfactant crystals and that the formation of a lamellar liquid crystal phase at 45°C affects both modulus and flow of the system. Lamellar crystals create a stiff network resulting in wall slip at large shear strain. Using serrated plates removes slip at the wall and we find a shear rate where microfractures localize in a preferential plane and the material flows. This behavior is reversible.  相似文献

Experiments were performed to study enhancement of heat transfer from the wire of d = 50 µm and the tube of d = 1.5 mm in subcooled pool boiling by ultrasonic waves. The working fluids are clean water and Alkyl (8-16) Glucoside surfactant solutions of different concentrations and bulk temperature 30 °C. The wire resistance was translated to the temperature, using the calibration data, the temperature of the tube was measured by thermocouple. The differences between effect of ultrasonic field on boiling in water for heaters of d = 50 µm and d = 1.5 mm may be summarized as follows: for boiling on the wire of d = 50 µm in subcooled water, Tb = 30 °C, enhancement of heat transfer coefficient due to applied ultrasonic field is about 70% and 20% at heat flux q = 620 kW/m2 and q = 1350 kW/m2, respectively. For boiling in surfactant solutions at the same boiling conditions enhancement of heat transfer coefficient is in the range of 5–10% at heat flux q = 620 kW/m2 and 10–16% at heat flux q = 1350 kW/m2 depending on solution concentration. For boiling on the tube of d= 1.5 mm in subcooled water, Tb= 30 ℃, enhancement of heat transfer coefficient due to applied ultrasonic field is about 50% and 45% at heat flux q = 500 kW/m2 and q = 2500 kW/m2, respectively. The same values are obtained for boiling in surfactant solution of concentration C = 250 ppm. For the wire of d = 50 µm the heat transfer enhancement due to acoustic vibrations in surfactant solutions is not as strong as in water. This fact may be considered as evidence of significant role of relationship between jet flow and ultrasonic field.  相似文献
