The formic acid and methanol oxidation reaction are studied on Pt(1 1 1) modified by a pseudomorphic Pd monolayer (denoted hereafter as the Pt(1 1 1)-Pd1 ML system) in 0.1 M HClO4 solution. The results are compared to the bare Pt(1 1 1) surface. The nature of adsorbed intermediates (COad) and the electrocatalytic properties (the onset of CO2 formation) were studied by FTIR spectroscopy. The results show that Pd has a unique catalytic activity for HCOOH oxidation, with Pd surface atoms being about four times more active than Pt surface atoms at 0.4 V. FTIR spectra reveal that on Pt atoms adsorbed CO is produced from dehydration of HCOOH, whereas no CO adsorbed on Pd can be detected although a high production rate of CO2 is observed at low potentials. This indicates that the reaction can proceed on Pd at low potentials without the typical “poison” formation. In contrast to its high activity for formic acid oxidation, the Pd film is completely inactive for methanol oxidation. The FTIR spectra show that neither adsorbed CO is formed on the Pd sites nor significant amounts of CO2 are produced during the electrooxidation of methanol.  相似文献

Reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) has been used to investigate the adsorption of CO on CeO2−x-supported Pd nanoparticles at room temperature. The results show that when CeO2−x is initially grown on Pt(1 1 1), a small proportion of the surface remains as bare Pt sites. However, when Pd is deposited onto CeO2−x/Pt(1 1 1), most of the Pd grows directly on top of the CeO2−x(1 1 1). RAIR spectra of CO adsorption on 1 ML Pd/CeO2−x/Pt(1 1 1) show a broad CO-Pd band, which is inconsistent with a single crystal Pd surface. However, the 5 ML and 10 ML Pd/CeO2−x/Pt(1 1 1) spectra show vibrational bands consistent with the presence of Pd(1 1 1) and (1 0 0) faces, suggesting the growth of Pd nanostructures with well defined facets.  相似文献

Thin Pd films (1-10 monolayers, ML) were deposited at 35 K on a Pt(1 1 1) single crystal and on an oxygen-terminated FeO(1 1 1) monolayer supported on Pt(1 1 1). Low energy electron diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy, and Kr and CO temperature programmed desorption techniques were used to investigate the annealing induced changes in the film surface morphology. For growth on Pt(1 1 1), the films order upon annealing to 500 K and form epitaxial Pd(1 1 1). Further annealing above 900 K results in Pd diffusion into the Pt(1 1 1) bulk and Pt-Pd alloy formation. Chemisorption of CO shows that even the first ordered monolayer of Pd on Pt(1 1 1) has adsorption properties identical to bulk Pd(1 1 1). Similar experiments conducted on FeO(1 1 1) indicate that 500 K annealing of a 10 ML thick Pd deposit also yields ordered Pd(1 1 1). In contrast, annealing of 1 and 3 ML thick Pd films did not result in formation of continuous Pd(1 1 1). We speculate that for these thinner films Pd diffuses underneath the FeO(1 1 1).  相似文献

The trapping probabilities of argon, krypton, and xenon on Pd(1 1 1) and Ni(1 1 1) have been investigated using supersonic molecular beam techniques. The trapping probability of argon exhibits normal incident energy in a similar fashion on both Pd(1 1 1) and Pt(1 1 1) because the mass of argon is significantly less than the surface mass of either Pd or Pt. In contrast, dynamic corrugation in the gas-surface potential is observed for krypton trapping on Pt(1 1 1) and Pd(1 1 1), resulting in a decreased angular dependence of the trapping probability compared to argon. For xenon trapping on Pd significant lattice deformation during the gas-surface collision appears to give rise to total energy scaling. The trapping probability of xenon on Pd(1 1 1) remains high at unusually high incident kinetic energies due to the overall enhanced energy transfer from the incident atom to the lattice. Trapping probabilities of Ar, Kr, and Xe are significantly lower on Ni(1 1 1) than on either Pt(1 1 1) or Pd(1 1 1) despite the lower surface mass of the Ni atoms. This result is attributed to the lower binding energy of the rare gases on Ni(1 1 1) and the higher Debye temperature of Ni. The energy scaling of Ar trapping on Ni(1 1 1) is determined by static corrugation, but the energy scaling for Kr and Xe on Ni(1 1 1) may involve the effects of dynamic corrugation. In the latter cases, the greater stiffness of the nickel lattice decreases the dynamic corrugation relative to Pt(1 1 1) and Pd(1 1 1).  相似文献

The infrared (IR) chemiluminescence studies of CO2 formed during steady-state CO oxidation over Pd(1 1 1), Pt(1 1 1), and Rh(1 1 1) surfaces were carried out. Analysis of their emission spectra indicates that the order of the average vibrational temperature () values of CO2 formed during CO oxidation was as follows: Pd(1 1 1) > Pt(1 1 1) > Rh(1 1 1), and the order is coincident with the potential energy in the transition state expected by the theoretical calculations. Furthermore, it is suggested that the bending vibrational temperature () can also be influenced by the angle of O-C-O (∠OCO) of the activated complex in the transition state, which has also been proposed by the theoretical calculations.  相似文献

Infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) was used to investigate carbon monoxide (CO) adsorption on 0.15 nm-thick-0.6 nm-thick Pd-deposited Pt(1 1 1) bimetallic surfaces: Pdx/Pt(1 1 1) (where x is the Pd thickness in nanometers) fabricated using molecular beam epitaxial method at substrate temperatures of 343 K, 473 K, and 673 K. Reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) measurements for Pd0.15-0.6 nm/Pt(1 1 1) surfaces fabricated at 343 K showed that Pd grows epitaxially on a clean Pt(1 1 1), having an almost identical lattice constant of Pt(1 1 1). The 1.0 L CO exposure to the clean Pt(1 1 1) at room temperature yielded linearly bonded and bridge-bonded CO-Pt bands at 2093 and 1855 cm−1. The CO-Pt band intensities for the CO-exposed Pdx/Pt(1 1 1) surfaces decreased with increasing Pd thickness. For Pd0.3 nm/Pt(1 1 1) deposited at 343 K, the 1933 cm−1 band caused by bridge-bonded CO-Pd enhanced the spectral intensity. The linear-bonded CO-Pt band (2090 cm−1) almost disappeared and the bridge-bonded CO-Pd band dominated the spectra for Pd0.6 nm/Pt(1 1 1). With increasing substrate temperature during the Pd depositions, the relative band intensities of the CO-Pt/CO-Pd increased. For the Pd0.3 nm/Pt(1 1 1) deposited at 673 K, the linear-bonded CO-Pt and bridge-bonded CO-Pd bands are located respectively at 2071 and 1928 cm−1. The temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) spectrum for the 673 K-deposited Pd0.3 nm/Pt(1 1 1) showed that a desorption signal for the adsorbed CO on the Pt sites decreased in intensity and shifted ca. 20 K to a lower temperature than those for the clean Pt(1 1 1). We discuss the CO adsorption behavior on well-defined Pd-deposited Pt(1 1 1) bimetallic surfaces.  相似文献

We have measured W and Pt 4f7/2 core-level photoemission spectra from interfaces formed by ultrathin Pt layers on W(1 1 0), completing our core-level measurements of W(1 1 0)-based bimetallic interfaces involving the group-10 metals Ni, Pd, and Pt. With increasing Pt coverage the sequence of W spectra can be described using three interfacial core-level peaks with binding-energy (BE) shifts (compared to the bulk) of −0.220 ± 0.015, −0.060 ± 0.015, and +0.110 ± 0.010 eV. We assign these features to 1D, 2D pseudomorphic (ps), and 2D closed-packed (cp) Pt phases, respectively. For ∼1 ps ML the Pt 4f7/2 BE is 71.40 ± 0.02 eV, a shift of +0.46 ± 0.09 eV with respect to the BE of bulk Pt metal. The W 4f7/2 core-level shifts induced by all three adsorbates are semiquantitatively described by the Born-Haber-cycle based partial-shift model of Nilsson et al. [39]. As with Ni/W(1 1 0), the difference in W 4f7/2 binding energies between ps and cp Pt phases has a large structural contribution. The Pt 4f lineshape is consistent with a small density of states at the Fermi level, reflective of the Pt monolayer having noble-metal-like electronic structure.  相似文献

The interaction of 1,3-butadiene, 1-butene and 2-cis/trans-butenes on the Pt(1 1 1) and Pd(1 1 1) surfaces has been studied with density functional theory methods (DFT). The same most stable adsorption modes have been found on both metal surfaces with similar adsorption energies. For 1,3-butadiene the 1,2,3,4-tetra-σ adsorption structure is shown to be the most stable one, in competition with a 1,4-metallacycle-type mode, which is only less stable by 10-12 kJ mol−1. On Pt(1 1 1) these total energy calculations were combined with simulations of the vibrational spectra. This confirms that the 1,2,3,4-tetra-σ adsorption is the most probable adsorption structure, but cannot exclude the 1,4-metallacycle as a minority species. Although similar in type and energy, the adsorption on the Pd(1 1 1) surface shows a markedly different geometry, with a smaller molecular distortion upon adsorption. The most stable adsorption structure for the butene isomers is the di-σ-mode. Similarly to the case of the 1,3-butadiene, the adsorption geometry is closer to the gas phase one on Pd than on Pt, hence explaining the different spectroscopic results, without the previously assumed requirement of a different binding mode. Moreover the present study has shown that the different selectivity observed on Pt(1 1 1) and Pd(1 1 1) for the hydrogenation reaction of butadiene cannot be satisfactory explained by the single comparison of the relative stabilities of 1,3-butadiene and 1-butene on these metals.  相似文献

The adsorption of CO on epitaxially grown Pt films of variable thickness has been studied using infrared-absorption spectroscopy, scanning tunnelling microscopy and thermal desorption spectroscopy. Depending on the number of pseudomorphic Pt layers (NPt = 1-4) the internal and external CO stretching modes (νC-O and νPt-CO, respectively) display characteristic frequency shifts due to the vanishing influence of the underlying Ru(0 0 0 1) substrate and Pt/Ru interface. For thicker layers (NPt ? 5) when this influence has become negligible, the compressive stress within the Pt film is gradually relieved, leading to a dislocation network. The structural heterogeneity during the ongoing relaxation process of the Pt film is reflected in the νC-O line shape; no line broadening is observed for either pseudomorphic or very thick films (NPt ? 15). For NPt ? 3 the adsorption of CO on Pt/Ru(0 0 0 1) films closely resembles CO on Pt(1 1 1), with residual deviations in line position and desorption temperatures gradually converging to zero.  相似文献

The surface chemistry of NO and NO2 on clean and oxygen-precovered Pt(1 1 0)-(1 × 2) surfaces were investigated by means of high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS). At room temperature, NO molecularly adsorbs on Pt(1 1 0), forming linear NO(a) and bridged NO(a). Coverage-dependent repulsive interactions within NO(a) drive the reversible transformation between linear and bridged NO(a). Some NO(a) decomposes upon heating, producing both N2 and N2O. For NO adsorption on the oxygen-precovered surface, repulsive interactions exist between precovered oxygen adatoms and NO(a), resulting in more NO(a) desorbing from the surface in the form of linear NO(a). Bridged NO(a) experiences stronger repulsive interactions with precovered oxygen than linear NO(a). The desorption activation energy of bridged NO(a) from oxygen-precovered Pt(1 1 0) is lower than that from clean Pt(1 1 0), but the desorption activation energy of linear NO(a) is not affected by the precovered oxygen. NO2 decomposes on Pt(1 1 0)-(1 × 2) surface at room temperature. The resulted NO(a) (both linear NO(a) and bridged NO(a)) and O(a) repulsively interact each other. Comparing with NO/Pt(1 1 0), more NO(a) desorbs from NO2/Pt(1 1 0) as linear NO(a), and both linear NO(a) and bridged NO(a) exhibit lower desorption activation energies. The reaction pathways of NO(a) on Pt(1 1 0), desorption or decomposition, are affected by their repulsive interactions with coexisting oxygen adatoms.  相似文献

We provide an overview of structure and reactivity of selected bimetallic single crystal electrodes obtained by the method of spontaneous deposition. The surfaces that are described and compared are the following: Au(1 1 1)/Ru, Pt(1 1 1)/Ru and Pt(1 1 1)/Os. Detailed morphological information is presented and the significance of this work in current and further study of nanoisland covered surfaces in the catalytic and spectroscopic perspective is highlighted. All surfaces were investigated by in situ STM and by electroanalytical techniques. The results confirm our previous data that nanosized Ru islands are formed with specific and distinctive structural features, and that the Ru growth pattern is different for Au(1 1 1) and Pt(1 1 1). For Au(1 1 1), Ru is preferentially deposited on steps, while a random and relatively sparse distribution of Ru islands is observed on terraces. In contrast, for Ru deposited on Pt(1 1 1), a homogeneous deposition over all the Pt(1 1 1) surface was found. Os is also deposited homogeneously, and at a much higher rate than Ru, and even within a single deposition it forms a large proportion of multilayer islands. On Au(1 1 1), the Ru islands on both steps and terraces reach the saturation coverage within a short deposition time, and the Ru islands grow to multilayer heights and assume hexagonal shapes. On Pt(1 1 1), the Ru saturation coverage is reached relatively fast, but when a single deposition is applied, Ru nanoislands of mainly monoatomic height are formed, with the Ru coverage not exceeding 0.2 ML. For Ru deposits on Pt(1 1 1), we demonstrate that larger and multilayer islands obtained in two consecutive depositions can be reduced in size--both in height and width--by oxidizing the Ru islands and then by reducing them back to a metallic state. A clear increase in the Ru island dispersion is then obtained. However, methanol oxidation chronoamperometry shows that the surface with such a higher dispersion is less active to methanol oxidation than the initial surface. A preliminary interpretation of this effect is provided. Finally, we studied CO stripping reaction on Pt(1 1 1)/Ru, Au(1 1 1)/Ru and on Pt(1 1 1)/Os. We relate CO oxidation differences observed between Pt(1 1 1)/Ru and Pt(1 1 1)/Os to the difference in the oxophilicity of the two admetals. In turn, the difference in the CO stripping reaction on Pt(1 1 1)/Ru and Au(1 1 1)/Ru with respect to the Ru islands is linked to the effect of the substrate on the bond strength and/or adlayer structure of CO and OHads species.  相似文献

The reaction of formic acid on Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7 was investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). The hydroxyl and carbonyl O 1s core levels of chemisorbed formic acid display chemical shifts of 2.4 and 0.2 eV respectively, compared with those of physisorbed molecules. The HREELS spectra of chemisorbed formic acid show the absence of stretching and bending modes of the O-H bond, the appearance of Si-H (2089 cm−1) and the Si-O (680 cm−1) stretching modes and the retained stretching mode of CO at 1703 cm−1. Our results clearly suggest that formic acid dissociates to form monodentate formate species and H-atom on the adatom-rest atom pair of Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7.  相似文献

We utilized temperature programmed desorption (TPD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron energy loss spectroscopy (ELS), and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) to investigate the oxidation of Pt(1 0 0)-hex-R0.7° at 450 K. Using an oxygen atom beam, we generated atomic oxygen coverages as high as 3.6 ML (monolayers) on Pt(1 0 0) in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV), almost 6 times the maximum coverage obtainable by dissociatively adsorbing O2. The results show that oxidation occurs through the development of several chemisorbed phases prior to oxide growth above about 1 ML. A weakly bound oxygen state that populates as the coverage increases from approximately 0.50 ML to 1 ML appears to serve as a necessary precursor to Pt oxide growth. We find that increasing the coverage above about 1 ML causes Pt oxide particle growth and significant surface disordering. Decomposition of the Pt oxide particles produces explosive O2 desorption characterized by a shift of the primary TPD feature to higher temperatures and a dramatic increase in the maximum desorption rate with increasing coverage. Based on thermodynamic considerations, we show that the thermal stability of the surface Pt oxide on Pt single crystal surfaces significantly exceeds that of bulk PtO2. Furthermore, we attribute the high stability and the acceleratory decomposition rates of the surface oxide to large kinetic barriers that must be overcome during oxide formation and decomposition. Lastly, we present evidence that structurally similar oxides develop on both Pt(1 1 1) and Pt(1 0 0), therefore concluding that the properties of the surface Pt oxide are largely insensitive to the initial structure of the Pt single crystal surface.  相似文献

We studied computationally the relative stability of PtML/WC(0 0 0 1) [pseudomorphic monolayer of Pt(1 1 1) on WC(0 0 0 1)] interfacial structures using a density functional slab model approach. The work of adhesion was calculated for six different interfacial structures, taking into account both W- and C-terminations of the carbide. The results show that the optimal interfacial structure of PtML/WC(0 0 0 1) is the W-terminated WC(0 0 0 1) with Pt atoms adhesion on the hcp site (W-hcp). The nature of metal/carbide bonding for the W-hcp interfacial geometry was determined on the basis of the partial density of states (PDOS). Adsorption of atomic hydrogen and dissociation of the hydrogen molecule on the W-hcp PtML/WC(0 0 0 1) was investigated and compared to that on Pt(1 1 1). It is found that the most favorable H2 dissociation channels need similar activation energies of 5.28 and 4.93 kJ/mol on PtML/WC(0 0 0 1) and Pt(1 1 1), respectively, with the release of considerable reaction energies. Furthermore, adsorption of CO on the W-hcp PtML/WC(0 0 0 1) and Pt(1 1 1) was also investigated. The results indicate that PtML/WC(0 0 0 1) is much less susceptible to CO poisoning than Pt(1 1 1), especially at the low coverage of CO.  相似文献

Adsorption of methanol on clean Pd(1 1 0) and on an alloyed Ag/Pd(1 1 0) surface has been studied by high-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy. On Pd(1 1 0) two different chemisorbed methanol species were observed for temperatures up to 200 K, with the one at lower binding energy remaining at low coverage. These species were attributed to methanol adsorbed in two different adsorption sites on the Pd(1 1 0) surface. As is well established for this system, heating to 250 K resulted in decomposition of methanol into CO. The adsorption and decomposition behaviour of methanol on the Ag/Pd(1 1 0) surface alloy formed by depositing Ag on Pd(1 1 0) at elevated temperature was similar to that of the pure Pd(1 1 0) surface. This suggests that the amount of Ag present in the Pd(1 1 0) surface in this study does not affect the decomposition behaviour of methanol as compared to pure Pd(1 1 0). Complementary density functional theory calculations also show little influence of Ag on the binding of methanol to Pd. These calculations predict an on-top adsorption site for low methanol coverages.  相似文献

Catalytic hydrogenation of aromatic compounds is an important process in petroleum industry. Understanding it through experimental or theoretical research can help to improve its efficiency. This work presents a first principles density functional theory study of the intermediates for the first four hydrogenations steps of the smallest aromatic compound, benzene, into C6H10 species, on two popular catalytic metals, palladium and platinum, described by periodic models. Different structures have been studied for the intermediate C6H6+n species, with a various degree of conservation of the conjugation. Some intermediates would present in gas phase a closed-shell conjugated structure, while other would correspond to multiple radicals with a massive destruction of the benzene π system. The Pd and Pt(1 1 1) surfaces strongly differ in terms of most stable structure for the intermediates. On Pd the most conjugated intermediates, i.e. the most stable in gas phase, is clearly preferred. In contrast, on Pt, multiple radical species, highly unstable in gas phase, are strongly stabilized by coupling with the surface. This thermodynamic study indicates a different trend for the hydrogenation mechanism: a clear successive 1-2-3… hydrogenation of neighboring carbon atoms on Pd keeping the largest conjugated fragment, and a nonconsecutive attack, with a maximum breaking of benzene conjugation on Pt.  相似文献

Density Functional Theory has been used to determine the energetically preferred structures of submonolayer, monolayer, and multilayer Pt films on both ideal terminations of SrTiO3(1 0 0), SrTiO3(1 1 1), and SrTiO3(1 1 0). The strength of the resulting metal/metal oxide interfaces was characterized by the adsorption energy of the film and the film’s work of separation. The two polar surfaces, SrTiO3(1 1 1) and SrTiO3(1 1 0), form significantly stronger interfaces than the non-polar SrTiO3(1 0 0) surface. Approximate criteria were applied to predict the growth mode of Pt on each surface.  相似文献

The initial growth and alloy formation of ultrathin Co films deposited on 1 ML Ni/Pt(1 1 1) were investigated by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). A sequence of samples of dCo Co/1 ML Ni/Pt(1 1 1) (dCo = 1, 2, and 3 ML) were prepared at room temperature, and then heated up to investigate the diffusion process. The Co and Ni atoms intermix at lower annealing temperature, and Co-Ni intermixing layer diffuses into the Pt substrate to form Ni-Co-Pt alloys at higher annealing temperature. The diffusion temperatures are Co coverage dependent. The evolution of UPS with annealing temperatures also shows the formation of surface alloys. Some interesting LEED patterns of 1 ML Co/1 ML Ni/Pt(1 1 1) show the formation of ordered alloys at different annealing temperature ranges. Further studies in the Curie temperature and concentration analysis, show that the ordered alloys corresponding to different LEED patterns are NixCo1−xPt and NixCo1−xPt3. The relationship between the interface structure and magnetic properties was investigated.  相似文献

We have investigated the Ce 4f electronic states in the Ce/Pd(1 1 1) and Ce-oxide/Pd(1 1 1) systems, using resonant photoemission (Ce 4d → 4f transitions), and XPS to understand Pd-Ce interactions in ultra thin layers of cerium and ceria deposited on Pd(1 1 1). Cerium deposited on Pd(1 1 1) at room temperature forms surface Ce-Pd alloys with Ce rich character, while a Pd rich Ce-Pd alloy is formed by heating to 700 °C. A modification of the chemical state of Ce can also be seen after oxygen exposure. RPES provides evidence that Ce-oxide layers deposited on Pd(1 1 1) have a CeO2 (Ce4+) character, however a net contribution of the Ce3+ states is also revealed. The Ce3+ states have surface character and are accompanied by oxygen vacancies. Heating to 600 °C causes Ce-oxide reduction. A significant shift of Pd 4d-derived states, induced by Pd 4d and Ce 4f hybridization, was observed. The resonant features in the valence band corresponding to Ce4+, Ce3+ and Ce0 states have been investigated for various Pd−Ce(CeOx) coverages.  相似文献

The adsorption of ethene (C2H4) on Pt(1 1 1) and the Pt3Sn/Pt(1 1 1) and Pt2Sn/Pt(1 1 1) surface alloys has been investigated experimentally by high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption. The experimental results have been compared with density functional theory (DFT) calculations allowing us to perform a complete assignment of all vibration modes and loss features to the species present on the surfaces. On Pt(1 1 1) as well as on the Pt-Sn surface alloys an η2 di-σ-bonded conformation of ethene has been found to be the most stable adsorbed form. In addition to this majority species a minor amount of π-bonded ethene has been identified, which is more abundant on the Pt2Sn surface alloy than on the other surfaces. Additionally the HREELS spectra of ethene on Pt(1 1 1) and the Pt-Sn surface alloys differ only slightly in terms of the energetic positions of the loss peaks.  相似文献
