Supramolecular materials cross‐linked between polymer chains by noncovalent bonds have the potential to provide dynamic functions that are not produced by covalently cross‐linked polymeric materials. We focused on the formation of supramolecular polymeric materials through host–guest interactions: a powerful method for the creation of nonconventional materials. We employed two different kinds of host–guest inclusion complexes of β‐cyclodextrin (βCD) with adamantane (Ad) and ferrocene (Fc) to bind polymers together to form a supramolecular hydrogel (βCD‐Ad‐Fc gel). The βCD‐Ad‐Fc gel showed self‐healing ability when damaged and responded to redox stimuli by expansion or contraction. Moreover, the βCD‐Ad‐Fc gel showed a redox‐responsive shape‐morphing effect. We thus succeeded in deriving three functions from the introduction of two kinds of functional units into a supramolecular material.  相似文献

The macroscopic self‐assembly of polymeric hydrogels modified with β‐cyclodextrin (βCD gel), ferrocene (Fc gel), and styrenesulfonic acid sodium salt (SSNa gel) was investigated. Under reductive conditions, the Fc gel selectively adhered to the βCD gel through a host–guest interaction. On the other hand, the oxidized ferrocenium (Fc+) gel selectively adhered to the SSNa gel through an ionic interaction under oxidative conditions. The adhesion strength was estimated by a tensile test. We finally succeeded in forming an ABC‐type macroscopic assembly of all three gels through two discrete noncovalent interactions.  相似文献

Flexible, tough, and self‐healable polymeric materials are promising to be a solution to the energy problem by substituting for conventional heavy materials. A fusion of supramolecular chemistry and polymer chemistry is a powerful method to create such intelligent materials. Here, a supramolecular polymeric material using multipoint molecular recognition between cyclodextrin (CD) and hydrophobic guest molecules at polymer side chain is reported. A transparent, flexible, and tough hydrogel (host–guest gel) is formed by a simple preparation procedure. The host–guest gel shows self‐healing property in both wet state and dry state due to reversible nature of host–guest interaction. The practical utility of the host–guest gel as a scratch curable coating is demonstrated.

A methodology for preparing supramolecular hydrogels from guest‐modified cyclodextrins (CDs) based on the host–guest and hydrogen‐bonding interactions of CDs is presented. Four types of modified CDs were synthesized to understand better the gelation mechanism. The 2D ROESY NMR spectrum of β‐CD‐AmTNB (Am=amino, TNB=trinitrobenzene) reveals that the TNB group was included in the β‐CD cavity. Pulsed field gradient NMR (PFG NMR) spectroscopy and AFM show that β‐CD‐AmTNB formed a supramolecular polymer in aqueous solution through head‐to‐tail stacking. Although β‐CD‐AmTNB did not produce a hydrogel due to insufficient growth of supramolecular polymers, β‐CD‐CiAmTNB (Ci=cinnamoyl) formed supramolecular fibrils through host–guest interactions. Hydrogen bonds between the cross‐linked fibrils resulted in the hydrogel, which displayed excellent chemical‐responsive properties. Gel‐to‐sol transitions occurred by adding 1‐adamantane carboxylic acid (AdCA) or urea. 1H NMR and induced circular dichroism (ICD) spectra reveal that AdCA released the guest parts from the CD cavity and that urea acts as a denaturing agent to break the hydrogen bonds between CDs. The hydrogel was also destroyed by adding β‐CD, which acts as the competitive host to reduce the fibrils. Furthermore, the gel changed to a sol by adding methyl orange (MO) as a guest compound, but the gel reappeared upon addition of α‐CD, which is a stronger host for MO.  相似文献

Development of self‐healing and photostimulated luminescent supramolecular polymeric materials is important for artificial soft materials. A supramolecular polymeric hydrogel is reported based on the host–guest recognition between a β‐cyclodextrin (β‐CD) host polymer (poly‐β‐CD) and an α‐bromonaphthalene (α‐BrNp) polymer (poly‐BrNp) without any additional gelator, which can self‐heal within only about one minute under ambient atmosphere without any additive. This supramolecular polymer system can be excited to engender room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) signals based on the fact that the inclusion of β‐CD macrocycle with α‐BrNp moiety is able to induce RTP emission (CD‐RTP). The RTP signal can be adjusted reversibly by competitive complexation of β‐CD with azobenzene moiety under specific irradiation by introducing another azobenzene guest polymer (poly‐Azo).  相似文献

Pentacyclic triterpenoids, a class of naturally bioactive products having multiple functional groups, unique chiral centers, rigid skeletons, and good biocompatibility, are ideal building blocks for fabricating versatile supramolecular structures. In this research, the natural pentacyclic triterpenoid glycyrrhetinic acid (GA) was used as a guest molecule for β‐cyclodextrin (β‐CD) to form a GA/β‐CD (1:1) inclusion complex. By means of GA and β‐CD pendant groups in N,N′‐dimethylacrylamide copolymers, a supramolecular polymer hydrogel can be physically cross‐linked by host–guest interactions between GA and β‐CD moieties. Moreover, self‐healing of this hydrogel was observed and confirmed by step‐strain rheological measurements, whereby the maximum storage modulus occurred at a [GA]/[β‐CD] molar ratio of 1:1. Additionally, these polymers displayed outstanding biocompatibility. The introduction of a natural pentacyclic triterpenoid into a hydrogel system not only provides a biocompatible guest–host complementary GA/β‐CD pair, but also makes this hydrogel an attractive candidate for tissue engineering.  相似文献

A host–guest (HG) polymer was prepared through the radical polymerization of acrylamide monomers (AAm) with a small amount of host‐guest linkers, β‐cyclodextrin‐attached AAm (βCD‐AAm) and adamantane‐attached AAm (Ad‐AAm). The linear viscoelastic and swelling measurements indicated that the resulting HG polymer swollen in water was gel‐like, although the HG polymer is conceptually a linear chain having only temporary crosslinkings. NMR measurements indicated that half of the βCD units incorporated in the HG polymer do not form the inclusion complex with Ad. Rheological analysis of the HG polymer revealed that HG interaction retarded the Rouse modes of networks but did not affect the level of the plateau modulus, which was simply described by the entanglements of AAm chains. This result was confirmed with the reference experiment, in which Ad were capped by competitive βCD molecules. Furthermore, the PAAm polymer with only βCD units (no Ad) was found to exhibit gel‐like behavior. This behavior was attributed to the formation of a small amount of rotaxane structure, which act as permanent crosslinkings, based on 2D NMR data. The HG polymer is basically an entanglement network with temporary sticky points due to the HG interaction, and a few permanent branching points. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. A new host molecule consists of four terpyridine groups as the binding sites with zinc(II) ion and a copillar[5]arene incorporated in the center as a spacer to interact with guest molecule was designed and synthesized. Due to the 120 ° angle of the rigid aromatic segment, a cross‐linked dimeric hexagonal supramolecular polymer was therefore generated as the result of the orthogonal self‐assembly of metal–ligand coordination and host–guest interaction. UV/Vis spectroscopy, 1H NMR spectroscopy, viscosity and dynamic light‐scattering techniques were employed to characterize and understand the cross‐linking process with the introduction of zinc(II) ion and guest molecule. More importantly, well‐defined morphology of the self‐assembled supramolecular structure can be tuned by altering the adding sequence of the two components, that is, the zinc(II) ion and the guest molecule. In addition, introduction of a competitive ligand suggested the dynamic nature of the supramolecular structure.  相似文献

A supramolecular recognition functionalized electrode (βCD‐nanoAu/Fc‐ITO) which exhibits redox‐activity was prepared through supramolecular assembly of β‐cyclodextrin (βCD) capped gold nanoparticles (βCD‐nanoAu) on the ITO previously coated with a monolayer of ferrocene residues (Fc‐ITO). The immobilization of βCD‐nanoAu on Fc‐ITO was confirmed by atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the supramolecular nature of the immobilization approach was also confirmed by cyclic voltammetry. On the other hand, the electrocatalytic activity of βCD‐nanoAu/Fc‐ITO electrode was also studied. The electrocatalytic activity toward ascorbic acid (AA) was enhanced compared with that at the Fc‐ITO electrode, and a linear relationship existed between the anodic peak and the concentration of AA in the range of 5.3×10?5 to 3.0×10?3 M with a detection limit (S/N=3) of 4.1×10?6 M.  相似文献

Bisporphyrin cleft molecule 1 Zn possessing a guest moiety assembled to form supramolecular polymers through host–guest interactions. Bispyridine cross‐linkers created interchain connections among the supramolecular polymers to form networked polymers in solution. Solution viscometry confirmed that the cross‐linked supramolecular polymers were highly entangled. Frequency‐dependent linear viscoelastic spectroscopy revealed that the supramolecular polymers generated well‐entangled solutions with associating and networking polymers, whereas the solid‐like aggregates moved individually without breaking and reforming structures below the transition temperature of 9.6 °C. Morphological transition of the supramolecular polymers was evidenced by AFM images; the non‐cross‐linked polymer resulted in wide‐spread thin networks, while the cross‐linked networks produced thicker worm‐like nanostructures. The supramolecular networks gelled in 1,1,2,2‐tetrachloroethane, and an elastic free‐standing film was fabricated with a Young’s modulus of 1 GPa.  相似文献

A novel amphiphilic dendron ( AZOC8GAc ) with three l ‐glutamic acid units and an azobenzene moiety covalently linked by an alkyl spacer has been designed. The compound formed hydrogels with water at very low concentration and self‐assembled into chiral‐twist structures. The gel showed a reversible macroscopic volume phase transition in response to pH variations and photo‐irradiation. During the photo‐triggered changes, although the gel showed complete reversibility in its optical absorptions, only an incomplete chiroptical property change was achieved. On the other hand, the dendron could form a 1:1 inclusion complex through a host–guest interaction with α‐cyclodextrin (α‐CD), designated as supra‐dendron gelator AZOC8GAc/α‐CD . The supra‐dendron showed similar gelation behavior to that of AZOC8GAc , but with enhanced photoisomerization‐transition efficiency and chiroptical switching capacity, which was completely reversible in terms of both optical and chiroptical performances. The self‐assembly of the supra‐dendron is a hierarchical or multi‐supramolecular self‐assembling process. This work has clearly illustrated that the hierarchical and multi‐supramolecular self‐assembling system endows the supramolecular nanostructures or materials with superior reversible optical and chiroptical switching.  相似文献

The redox switchable formation of very well‐defined supramolecular graft polymers in aqueous solution driven by host–guest interactions between ferrocene (Fc) and cyclodextrin (CD) is presented. The Fc‐containing acrylic backbone copolymer (PDMA‐stat‐Fc) is prepared via reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) copolymerization of N,N‐dimethylacrylamide (DMA) and the novel monomer N‐(ferrocenoylmethyl)acrylamide (NFMA). Via the RAFT process, copolymers containing variable Fc ratios (5‐10 mol%) are prepared, affording polymers of molecular masses of close to 11 000 g mol−1 and molar mass dispersities (Đ) of 1.2. The β‐cyclodextrin (β‐CD) containing building block is synthesized via RAFT‐polymerization, too, in order to afford a polymer with well‐defined molecular mass and low dispersity ( = 10 300 g mol−1, Đ = 1.1), employing a propargyl‐functionalized chain transfer agent for the polymerization of N,N‐diethylacrylamide (DEA). The polymerization product is subsequently terminated with β‐CD via the regiospecific copper (I)‐catalyzed 1,3‐cycloaddition (PDEA‐βCD). Host–guest interactions between Fc and CD lead to the formation of supramolecular graft‐polymers, verified via nuclear Overhauser enhancement spectroscopy (NOESY). Importantly, their redox‐responsive character is clearly confirmed via cyclic voltammetry (CV). The self‐assembly of the statistical Fc‐containing lateral polymer chain in aqueous solution leads to mono‐ and multi‐core micelle‐aggregates evidenced via TEM. Only diffused cloud‐like, non‐spherical nanostructures are observed after addition of PDEA‐βCD (TEM).

A hybrid supramolecular polymeric hydrogel is conveniently constructed via host–guest interaction of a host cyclodextrin polymer (poly‐CD) with a guest α‐bromonaphthalene polymer (poly‐BrNp) and mixing with 6‐thio‐β‐cyclodextrin (β‐SH‐CD) modified gold nanoparticles (GPCDs) in aqueous solution. According to the dynamic oscillatory data, the hydrogel exhibits markedly enhanced stiffness compared with the GPCD‐free one (both G′ and G“ values are almost twice as high as those of the original GPCD‐free hydrogel) due to the introduction of the inorganic gold nanoparticles. This hybrid supramolecular polymeric hydrogel has a rapid and excellent self‐healing property (only about 1 min, and the G′ and G” of the self‐healed hydrogel almost turned back to their original levels after 1 hour) in air (without adding any solvent or additive).  相似文献

Hydrogel biomaterials are pervasive in biomedical use. Applications of these soft materials range from contact lenses to drug depots to scaffolds for transplanted cells. A subset of hydrogels is prepared from physical cross‐linking mediated by host–guest interactions. Host macrocycles, the most recognizable supramolecular motif, facilitate complex formation with an array of guests by inclusion in their portal. Commonly, an appended macrocycle forms a complex with appended guests on another polymer chain. The formation of poly(pseudo)rotaxanes is also demonstrated, wherein macrocycles are threaded by a polymer chain to give rise to physical cross‐linking by secondary non‐covalent interactions or polymer jamming. Host–guest supramolecular hydrogels lend themselves to a variety of applications resulting from their dynamic properties that arise from non‐covalent supramolecular interactions, as well as engineered responsiveness to external stimuli. These are thus an exciting new class of materials.  相似文献

Recent advances in host–guest chemistry have significantly influenced the construction of supramolecular soft biomaterials. The highly selective and non‐covalent interactions provide vast possibilities of manipulating supramolecular self‐assemblies at the molecular level, allowing a rational design to control the sizes and morphologies of the resultant objects as carrier vehicles in a delivery system. In this Focus Review, the most recent developments of supramolecular self‐assemblies through host–guest inclusion, including nanoparticles, micelles, vesicles, hydrogels, and various stimuli‐responsive morphology transition materials are presented. These sophisticated materials with diverse functions, oriented towards therapeutic agent delivery, are further summarized into several active domains in the areas of drug delivery, gene delivery, co‐delivery and site‐specific targeting deliveries. Finally, the possible strategies for future design of multifunctional delivery carriers by combining host–guest chemistry with biological interface science are proposed.  相似文献

A photoresponsive microgel is designed by the combination of a noncovalent assembly strategy with a covalent cross‐linking method. End‐functionalized poly(ethylene glycol) with azobenzene [(PEG‐(Azo)2)] was mixed with acrylate‐modified β‐CD (β‐CD‐MAA) to form photoresponsive inclusion complex through host–guest interaction. The above photoresponsive complex was cross‐linked by thiol‐functionalized PEG (PEG‐dithiol) via Michael addition click reaction. The photoreversibility of resulted microgel was studied by TEM, UV–Vis spectroscopy, and 1H NMR measurements. The characterization results indicated that the reversible size changes of the microgel could be achieved by alternative UV–Vis irradiations with good repeatability.  相似文献

Self‐assembled, noncovalent polymeric biodegradable materials mimicking proteoglycan aggregates were synthesized from inclusion complexes of cationic surfactants with γ‐cyclodextrin and the natural anionic polymer hyaluronan. The amorphous structure of this ternary system was proven by X‐ray diffraction and thermal analysis. Light‐scattering measurements showed that there was a competition between hyaluronic acid and the surfactant for the cyclodextrin cavity. These self‐assembled supramolecular matrices were loaded with both hydrophilic and lipophilic drug substances for dissolution studies. The release of the entrapped drugs was found to be controlled by cations in the surrounding media and by biodegradation. Slow drug release in an ion‐free medium became faster in physiological salt solution in which the macroscopic polymer matrix was disassembled. In contrast, the enzymatic degradation of hyaluronan was hindered in the polymeric matrix. The supramolecular systems consisting of γ‐cyclodextrin as a macrocyclic host, a cationic surfactant guest, and hyaluronic acid as the anionic polymer electrostatically cross‐linked by the inclusion complex of the first two was found to be a novel drug‐delivery system for the controlled release of traditional drugs such as curcumin and ketotifen and proteins such as bovine serum albumin.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterization of a linear supramolecular polymer formed by dual host–guest recognitions is presented. The polymer linked by the orthogonal interactions of azobenzene with β‐cyclodextrin and methyl viologen with sulfonatocalix[4]arene is constructed, and the morphology change along with the formation and vanishment of host–guest interaction is investigated. The reversible disassembly–reassembly of the polymer induced by light and the redox process are monitored by UV–vis and cyclic voltammetry, respectively. The interesting morphology differences between the monomer guest (G), supramolecular polymer (P), and light dissembled product pseudorotaxane (D1) are observed and analyzed. G conducts self‐assembly into a short rod with average width of 83 nm due to the molecular amphipathy and π–π interaction between naphthalene nucleuses, while P exhibits 20 nm wide line morphology. Irradiating P with 365 nm light, the corresponding aggregation D1 shows as 35 nm wide short rod.  相似文献

Here we show the preparation of a series of water‐based physically cross‐linked polymeric materials utilizing cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) ternary complexes displaying a range of binding, and therefore cross‐linking, dynamics. We determined that the mechanical strength of these materials is correlated directly with a high energetic barrier for the dissociation of the CB[8] ternary complex cross‐links, whereas facile and rapid self‐healing requires a low energetic barrier to ternary complex association. The versatile CB[8] ternary complex has, therefore, proven to be a powerful asset for improving our understanding of challenging property–structure relationships in supramolecular systems and their associated influence on the bulk behavior of dynamically cross‐linked materials.  相似文献

A new class of polymeric thermometers with a memory function is reported that is based on the supramolecular host–guest interactions of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) with side‐chain naphthalene guest moieties and the tetracationic macrocycle cyclobis(paraquat‐p‐phenylene) (CBPQT4+) as the host. This supramolecular thermometer exhibits a memory function for the thermal history of the solution, which arises from the large hysteresis of the thermoresponsive LCST phase transition (LCST=lower critical solution temperature). This hysteresis is based on the formation of a metastable soluble state that consists of the PNIPAM–CBPQT4+ host–guest complex. When heated above the transition temperature, the polymer collapses, and the host–guest interactions are disrupted, making the polymer more hydrophobic and less soluble in water. Aside from providing fundamental insights into the kinetic control of supramolecular assemblies, the developed thermometer with a memory function might find use in applications spanning the physical and biological sciences.  相似文献
