In the framework of strain gradient plasticity, a solid body with boundary surface playing the role of a dissipative boundary layer endowed with surface tension and surface energy, is addressed. Using the so-called residual-based gradient plasticity theory, the state equations and the higher order boundary conditions are derived quite naturally for both the bulk material and the boundary layer. A phenomenological constitutive model is envisioned, in which the bulk material and the boundary layer obey (rate independent associative) coupled plasticity evolution laws, with kinematic hardening laws of differential nature for the bulk material, but of nondifferential nature for the layer. A combined global maximum dissipation principle is shown to hold. The higher order boundary conditions are discussed in details and categorized in relation to some peculiar features of the boundary surface, and their basic role in the coupling of the bulk/layer plasticity evolution laws is pointed out. The case of an internal interface is also studied. An illustrative example relating to a shear model exhibiting energetic size effects is presented. The theory provides a unified view on gradient plasticity with interfacial energy effects.  相似文献

This study investigates thermodynamically consistent dissipative hardening in gradient crystal plasticity in a large-deformation context. A viscoplastic model which accounts for constitutive dependence on the slip, the slip gradient as well as the slip rate gradient is presented. The model is an extension of that due to Gurtin (Gurtin, M. E., J. Mech. Phys. Solids, 52 (2004) 2545–2568 and Gurtin, M. E., J. Mech. Phys. Solids, 56 (2008) 640–662)), and is guided by the viscoplastic model and algorithm of Ekh et al. (Ekh, M., Grymer, M., Runesson, K. and Svedberg, T., Int. J. Numer. Meths Engng, 72 (2007) 197–220) whose governing equations are equivalent to those of Gurtin for the purely energetic case. In contrast to the Gurtin formulation and in line with that due to Ekh et al., viscoplasticity in the present model is accounted for through a Perzyna-type regularization. The resulting theory includes three different types of hardening: standard isotropic hardening is incorporated as well as energetic hardening driven by the slip gradient. In addition, as a third type, dissipative hardening associated with plastic strain rate gradients is included. Numerical computations are carried out and discussed for the large strain, viscoplastic model with non-zero dissipative backstress.  相似文献

The effect of the material microstructural interfaces increases as the surface-to-volume ratio increases. It is shown in this work that interfacial effects have a profound impact on the scale-dependent yield strength and strain hardening of micro/nano-systems even under uniform stressing. This is achieved by adopting a higher-order gradient-dependent plasticity theory [Abu Al-Rub, R.K., Voyiadjis, G.Z., Bammann, D.J., 2007. A thermodynamic based higher-order gradient theory for size dependent plasticity. Int. J. Solids Struct. 44, 2888–2923] that enforces microscopic boundary conditions at interfaces and free surfaces. Those nonstandard boundary conditions relate a microtraction stress to the interfacial energy at the interface. In addition to the nonlocal yield condition for the material’s bulk, a microscopic yield condition for the interface is presented, which determines the stress at which the interface begins to deform plastically and harden. Hence, two material length scales are incorporated: one for the bulk and the other for the interface. Different expressions for the interfacial energy are investigated. The effect of the interfacial yield strength and interfacial hardening are studied by analytically solving a one-dimensional Hall–Petch-type size effect problem. It is found that when assuming compliant interfaces the interface properties control both the material’s global yield strength and rates of strain hardening such that the interfacial strength controls the global yield strength whereas the interfacial hardening controls both the global yield strength and strain hardening rates. On the other hand, when assuming a stiff interface, the bulk length scale controls both the global yield strength and strain hardening rates. Moreover, it is found that in order to correctly predict the increase in the yield strength with decreasing size, the interfacial length scale should scale the magnitude of both the interfacial yield strength and interfacial hardening.  相似文献

A Phenomenological Mesoscopic Field Dislocation Mechanics (PMFDM) model is developed, extending continuum plasticity theory for studying initial-boundary value problems of small-scale plasticity. PMFDM results from an elementary space-time averaging of the equations of Field Dislocation Mechanics (FDM), followed by a closure assumption from any strain-gradient plasticity model that attempts to account for effects of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) only in work hardening. The specific lower-order gradient plasticity model chosen to substantiate this work requires one additional material parameter compared to its conventional continuum plasticity counterpart. The further addition of dislocation mechanics requires no additional material parameters. The model (a) retains the constitutive dependence of the free-energy only on elastic strain as in conventional continuum plasticity with no explicit dependence on dislocation density, (b) does not require higher-order stresses, and (c) does not require a constitutive specification of a ‘back-stress’ in the expression for average dislocation velocity/plastic strain rate. However, long-range stress effects of average dislocation distributions are predicted by the model in a mechanistically rigorous sense. Plausible boundary conditions (with obvious implication for corresponding interface conditions) are discussed in some detail from a physical point of view. Energetic and dissipative aspects of the model are also discussed. The developed framework is a continuous-time model of averaged dislocation plasticity, without having to rely on the notion of incremental work functions, their convexity properties, or their minimization. The tangent modulus relating stress rate and total strain rate in the model is the positive-definite tensor of linear elasticity, and this is not an impediment to the development of idealized microstructure in the theory and computations, even when such a convexity property is preserved in a computational scheme. A model of finite deformation, mesoscopic single crystal plasticity is also presented, motivated by the above considerations.Lower-order gradient plasticity appears as a constitutive limit of PMFDM, and the development suggests a plausible boundary condition on the plastic strain rate for this limit that is appropriate for the modeling of constrained plastic flow in three-dimensional situations.  相似文献

In the small deformation range, we consider crystal and isotropic “higher-order” theories of strain gradient plasticity, in which two different types of size effects are accounted for: (i) that dissipative, entering the model through the definition of an effective measure of plastic deformation peculiar of the isotropic hardening function and (ii) that energetic, included by defining the defect energy (i.e., a function of Nye's dislocation density tensor added to the free energy; see, e.g., [Gurtin, M.E., 2002. A gradient theory of single-crystal viscoplasticity that accounts for geometrically necessary dislocations. J. Mech. Phys. Solids 50, 5–32]). In order to compare the two modellings, we recast both of them into a unified deformation theory framework and apply them to a simple boundary value problem for which we can exploit the Γ-convergence results of [Bardella, L., Giacomini, A., 2008. Influence of material parameters and crystallography on the size effects describable by means of strain gradient plasticity. J. Mech. Phys. Solids 56 (9), 2906–2934], in which the crystal model is made isotropic by imposing that any direction be a possible slip system. We show that the isotropic modelling can satisfactorily approximate the behaviour described by the isotropic limit obtained from the crystal modelling if the former constitutively involves the plastic spin, as in the theory put forward in Section 12 of [Gurtin, M.E., 2004. A gradient theory of small-deformation isotropic plasticity that accounts for the Burgers vector and for dissipation due to plastic spin. J. Mech. Phys. Solids 52, 2545–2568]. The analysis suggests a criterium for choosing the material parameter governing the plastic spin dependence into the relevant Gurtin model.  相似文献

Within the framework of isotropic strain gradient plasticity, a rate-independent constitutive model exhibiting size dependent hardening is formulated and discussed with particular concern to its strengthening behavior. The latter is modelled as a (fictitious) isotropic hardening featured by a potential which is a positively degree-one homogeneous function of the effective plastic strain and its gradient. This potential leads to a strengthening law in which the strengthening stress, i.e. the increase of the plastically undeformed material initial yield stress, is related to the effective plastic strain through a second order PDE and related higher order boundary conditions. The plasticity flow laws, with the role there played by the strengthening stress, are addressed and shown to admit a maximum dissipation principle. For an idealized elastic perfectly plastic material with strengthening effects, the plastic collapse load problem of a micro/nano scale structure is addressed and its basic features under the light of classical plastic limit analysis are pointed out. It is found that the conceptual framework of classical limit analysis, including the notion of rigid-plastic behavior, remains valid. The lower bound and upper bound theorems of classical limit analysis are extended to strengthening materials. A static-type maximum principle and a kinematic-type minimum principle, consequences of the lower and upper bound theorems, respectively, are each independently shown to solve the collapse load problem. These principles coincide with their respective classical counterparts in the case of simple material. Comparisons with existing theories are provided. An application of this nonclassical plastic limit analysis to a simple shear model is also presented, in which the plastic collapse load is shown to increase with the decreasing sample size (Hall–Petch size effects).  相似文献

The size effect in conical indentation of an elasto-plastic solid is predicted via the Fleck and Willis formulation of strain gradient plasticity (Fleck, N.A. and Willis, J.R., 2009, A mathematical basis for strain gradient plasticity theory. Part II: tensorial plastic multiplier, J. Mech. Phys. Solids, 57, 1045–1057). The rate-dependent formulation is implemented numerically and the full-field indentation problem is analyzed via finite element calculations, for both ideally plastic behavior and dissipative hardening. The isotropic strain-gradient theory involves three material length scales, and the relative significance of these length scales upon the degree of size effect is assessed. Indentation maps are generated to summarize the sensitivity of indentation hardness to indent size, indenter geometry and material properties (such as yield strain and strain hardening index). The finite element model is also used to evaluate the pertinence of the Johnson cavity expansion model and of the Nix–Gao model, which have been extensively used to predict size effects in indentation hardness.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to investigate the microstructure evolution, stress-strain response and strain hardening behavior of microscale beams. For that purpose, two single crystal cantilever beams in the size dependent regime were manufactured by ion beam milling and beams were bent with an indenter device. A crystal plasticity material model for large deformations was implemented in a finite element framework to further investigate the effect of boundary constraints. Simulations were performed using bulk material properties of single crystal copper without any special treatment for the strain gradients. The difference between the slopes of the experimental and the simulated force displacement curves suggested negligible amount of strain gradient hardening compared to the statistical hardening mechanisms.  相似文献

A phenomenological, flow theory version of gradient plasticity for isotropic and anisotropic solids is constructed along the lines of Gudmundson [Gudmundson, P., 2004. A unified treatment of strain-gradient plasticity. J. Mech. Phys. Solids 52, 1379-1406]. Both energetic and dissipative stresses are considered in order to develop a kinematic hardening theory, which in the absence of gradient terms reduces to conventional J2 flow theory with kinematic hardening. The dissipative stress measures, work-conjugate to plastic strain and its gradient, satisfy a yield condition with associated plastic flow. The theory includes interfacial terms: elastic energy is stored and plastic work is dissipated at internal interfaces, and a yield surface is postulated for the work-conjugate stress quantities at the interface. Uniqueness and extremum principles are constructed for the solution of boundary value problems, for both the rate-dependent and the rate-independent cases. In the absence of strain gradient and interface effects, the minimum principles reduce to the classical extremum principles for a kinematically hardening elasto-plastic solid. A rigid-hardening version of the theory is also stated and the resulting theory gives rise to an extension to the classical limit load theorems. This has particular appeal as previous trial fields for limit load analysis can be used to generate immediately size-dependent bounds on limit loads.  相似文献

There exist two frameworks of strain gradient plasticity theories to model size effects observed at the micron and sub-micron scales in experiments. The first framework involves the higher-order stress and therefore requires extra boundary conditions, such as the theory of mechanism-based strain gradient (MSG) plasticity [J Mech Phys Solids 47 (1999) 1239; J Mech Phys Solids 48 (2000) 99; J Mater Res 15 (2000) 1786] established from the Taylor dislocation model. The other framework does not involve the higher-order stress, and the strain gradient effect come into play via the incremental plastic moduli. A conventional theory of mechanism-based strain gradient plasticity is established in this paper. It is also based on the Taylor dislocation model, but it does not involve the higher-order stress and therefore falls into the second strain gradient plasticity framework that preserves the structure of conventional plasticity theories. The plastic strain gradient appears only in the constitutive model, and the equilibrium equations and boundary conditions are the same as the conventional continuum theories. It is shown that the difference between this theory and the higher-order MSG plasticity theory based on the same dislocation model is only significant within a thin boundary layer of the solid.  相似文献

This work addresses the formulation of the thermodynamics of nonlocal plasticity using the gradient theory. The formulation is based on the nonlocality energy residual introduced by Eringen and Edelen (1972). Gradients are introduced for those variables associated with isotropic and kinematic hardening. The formulation applies to small strain gradient plasticity and makes use of the evanescent memory model for kinematic hardening. This is accomplished using the kinematic flux evolution as developed by Zbib and Aifantis (1988). Therefore, the present theory is a four nonlocal parameter-based theory that accounts for the influence of large variations in the plastic strain, accumulated plastic strain, accumulated plastic strain gradients, and the micromechanical evolution of the kinematic flux. Using the principle of virtual power and the laws of thermodynamics, thermodynamically-consistent equations are derived for the nonlocal plasticity yield criterion and associated flow rule. The presence of higher-order gradients in the plastic strain is shown to enhance a corresponding history variable which arises from the accumulation of the plastic strain gradients. Furthermore, anisotropy is introduced by plastic strain gradients in the form of kinematic hardening. Plastic strain gradients can be attributed to the net Burgers vector, while gradients in the accumulation of plastic strain are responsible for the introduction of isotropic hardening. The equilibrium between internal Cauchy stress and the microstresses conjugate to the higher-order gradients frames the yield criterion, which is obtained from the principle of virtual power. Microscopic boundary conditions, associated with plastic flow, are introduced to supplement the macroscopic boundary conditions of classical plasticity. The nonlocal formulation developed here preserves the classical assumption of local plasticity, wherein plastic flow direction is governed by the deviatoric Cauchy stress. The theory is applied to the problems of thin films on both soft and hard substrates. Numerical solutions are presented for bi-axial tension and simple shear loading of thin films on substrates.  相似文献

Strain gradient plasticity for finite deformations is addressed within the framework of nonlocal continuum thermodynamics, featured by the concepts of (nonlocality) energy residual and globally simple material. The plastic strain gradient is assumed to be physically meaningful in the domain of particle isoclinic configurations (with the director vector triad constant both in space and time), whereas the objective notion of corotational gradient makes it possible to compute the plastic strain gradient in any domain of particle intermediate configurations. A phenomenological elastic–plastic constitutive model is presented, with mixed kinematic/isotropic hardening laws in the form of PDEs and related higher order boundary conditions (including those associated with the moving elastic/plastic boundary). Two fourth-order projection tensor operators, functions of the elastic and plastic strain states, are shown to relate the skew-symmetric parts of the Mandel stress and back stress to the related symmetric parts. Consistent with the thermodynamic restrictions therein derived, the flow laws for rate-independent associative plasticity are formulated in a six-dimensional tensor space in terms of symmetric parts of Mandel stresses and related work-conjugate generalized plastic strain rates. A simple shear problem application is presented for illustrative purposes.  相似文献

Within the framework of linear plasticity, based on additive decomposition of the linear strain tensor, kinematical hardening can be described by means of extended potentials. The method is elegant and avoids the need for evolution equations. The extension of small strain formulations to the finite strain case, which is based on the multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient into elastic and inelastic parts, proved not straight forward. Specifically, the symmetry of the resulting back stress remained elusive. In this paper, a free energy-based formulation incorporating the effect of kinematic hardening is proposed. The formulation is able to reproduce symmetric expressions for the back stress while incorporating the multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient. Kinematic hardening is combined with isotropic hardening where an associative flow rule and von Mises yield criterion are applied. It is shown that the symmetry of the back stress is strongly related to its treatment as a truly spatial tensor, where contraction operations are to be conducted using the current metric. The latter depends naturally on the deformation gradient itself. Various numerical examples are presented.  相似文献

The buckling and the post-buckling behaviors of a perfect axially loaded column are analytically investigated through a global bilinear moment–curvature elastoplastic constitutive law. Three plasticity cases are studied, namely the linear hardening plasticity law, the perfect elastoplastic case and the softening case. The applications of such a study can be found in various structural engineering problems, including reinforced concrete, steel, timber or composite structures. It is analytically shown that for all kinds of elastoplastic behaviors, the plasticity phenomena lead to a global softening branch in the load–deflection diagram. The propagation of the plasticity zone during the post-buckling process is analytically characterized in case of linear hardening or softening plasticity laws. However, it is shown that the unphysical elastic unloading solution necessarily occurs in presence of local softening moment–curvature constitutive law. A nonlocal plasticity moment–curvature softening law is then used to control the localization branch in the post-buckling stage. This nonlocal plasticity law includes the explicit and the implicit gradient plasticity law. Higher-order plasticity boundary conditions are derived from an extended variational principle. Some parametric studies finally illustrate the main findings of this paper, including the plasticity modulus effect on the post-buckling behavior of these plasticity structural systems.  相似文献

The plastic deformations of tempered martensite steel representative volume elements with different martensite block structures have been investigated by using a nonlocal crystal plasticity model which considers isotropic and kinematic hardening produced by plastic strain gradients. It was found that pronounced strain gradients occur in the grain boundary region even under homogeneous loading. The isotropic hardening of strain gradients strongly influences the global stress–strain diagram while the kinematic hardening of strain gradients influences the local deformation behaviour. It is found that the additional strain gradient hardening is not only dependent on the block width but also on the misorientations or the deformation incompatibilities in adjacent blocks.  相似文献

A kinematic hardening model applicable to finite strains is presented. The kinematic hardening concept is based on the residual stresses that evolve due to different obstacles that are present in a polycrystalline material, such as grain boundaries, cross slips, etc. Since these residual stresses are a manifestation of the distortion of the crystal lattice a corresponding deformation gradient is introduced to represent this distortion. The residual stresses are interpreted in terms of the form of a back-stress tensor, i.e. the kinematic hardening model is based on a deformation gradient which determines the back-stress tensor. A set of evolution equations is used to describe the evolution of the deformation gradient. Non-dissipative quantities are allowed in the model and the implications of these are discussed. Von Mises plasticity for which the uniaxial stress–strain relation can be obtained in closed form serves as a model problem. For uniaxial loading, this model yields a kinematic hardening identical to the hardening produced by isotropic exponential hardening. The numerical implementation of the model is discussed. Finite element simulations showing the capabilities of the model are presented.  相似文献

Hill's 1948 anisotropic theory of plasticity (Hill, R., 1948. A theory of yielding and plastic flow of anisotropic metals. Proc. Roy. Soc. London A193, 281–297) is extended to include the concept of combined isotropic-kinematic hardening, and the objective of this paper is to validate the model so that it may be useful for analyses of sheet metal forming. Isotropic hardening and kinematic hardening may be experimentally observed in sheet metals, if yielding is defined by the proportional limit or by a small proof strain. In this paper, a single exponential term is used to describe isotropic hardening and Prager's linear kinematic hardening rule is applied for simplicity. It is shown that this model can satisfactorily describe both the yield stress and the plastic strain ratio, the R-ratio, observed in tension test of specimens cut at various angles measured from the rolling direction of the sheet. Kinematic hardening leads to a gradual change in the direction of the plastic strain increment, as the axial strain increases in the tension test; while in the traditional approach for sheet metal, this direction does not change due to the use of isotropic hardening.  相似文献

In the present research, the mechanical behavior of the surface-nanocrystalline aluminum (SNCA) is investigated through nanoindentation experiment and theoretical modeling. Firstly, through microscopical observation and measurement for the SNCA material, a microstructure cell model is developed. Secondly, based on the microstructure cell model and the strain gradient plasticity theory, and based on introducing a parameter accounting for the grain size nonuniformity effect, the discrete features of the hardness–depth relations of the SNCA material are described. The “U-type” feature of the hardness–depth experimental curves is modeled and simulated. Thirdly, in the SNCA material the mechanical property of the grain boundary, i.e., the strength of plastic zone penetrating the grain boundary is characterized by introducing a criterion parameter, the critical effective plastic strain. The “waterfall-type” feature of the hardness–depth curves is modeled and simulated. It is worth pointing out that, in the present study, the length scale parameter in the strain gradient plasticity theory is taken as a universal material parameter instead of a simulation parameter, and it is determined through applying the strain gradient plasticity theory to the modeling of the corresponding single crystal aluminum.  相似文献

Interactions between dislocations and grain boundaries play an important role in the plastic deformation of polycrystalline metals. Capturing accurately the behaviour of these internal interfaces is particularly important for applications where the relative grain boundary fraction is significant, such as ultra fine-grained metals, thin films and micro-devices. Incorporating these micro-scale interactions (which are sensitive to a number of dislocation, interface and crystallographic parameters) within a macro-scale crystal plasticity model poses a challenge. The innovative features in the present paper include (i) the formulation of a thermodynamically consistent grain boundary interface model within a microstructurally motivated strain gradient crystal plasticity framework, (ii) the presence of intra-grain slip system coupling through a microstructurally derived internal stress, (iii) the incorporation of inter-grain slip system coupling via an interface energy accounting for both the magnitude and direction of contributions to the residual defect from all slip systems in the two neighbouring grains, and (iv) the numerical implementation of the grain boundary model to directly investigate the influence of the interface constitutive parameters on plastic deformation. The model problem of a bicrystal deforming in plane strain is analysed. The influence of dissipative and energetic interface hardening, grain misorientation, asymmetry in the grain orientations and the grain size are systematically investigated. In each case, the crystal response is compared with reference calculations with grain boundaries that are either ‘microhard’ (impenetrable to dislocations) or ‘microfree’ (an infinite dislocation sink).  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the improved modeling accuracy of a finite-deformation strain gradient crystal plasticity formulation over its classical counterpart by conducting a joint experimental and numerical investigation of the microscopic details of the deformation of a whisker-reinforced metal-matrix composite. The lattice rotation distribution around whiskers is obtained in thin foils using a TEM technique and is then correlated with numerical predictions based on finite element analyses of a unit-cell of a single crystal matrix containing a rigid whisker. The matrix material is first characterized by a classical, scale-independent crystal plasticity theory. It is found that the classical theory predicts a lattice rotation distribution with a spatial gradient much higher than experimentally measured. A strain gradient crystal plasticity formulation is then applied to model the matrix. The strain gradient formulation accounts for both strain hardening and strain gradient hardening. The deformation thus predicted exhibits a strong dependence on the size of the whisker. For a constitutive length scale comparable to the whisker diameter, the spatial gradient of the lattice rotation is several times lower than that predicted by the classical theory, and hence correlates significantly better with the experimental results.  相似文献
