Shape change of metal systems generates deformed microstructures of dislocation arrays that are comprised of walls of high density separating low density cells. The flow stresses of these composite structures are equilibrated by an evolving internal stress due to the blockage of dislocation passage resulting in kinematic hardening in the meso-scale. The method of intra-granular backstress of Eshelby using Kröner based approach in closed form formulae can easily be incorporated into a crystal-plasticity-based model to predict the kinematic hardening. We have previously developed finite element analyses based on the rate dependent crystal plasticity theory, which can incorporate electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) maps. We will use this model with inclusion of the calculated backstress to investigate the effect of changes in strain paths.

In this work, we develop a physically-based crystal plasticity model for the prediction of cyclic tension–compression deformation of multi-phase materials, specifically dual-phase (DP) steels. The model is elasto–plastic in nature and integrates a hardening law based on statistically stored dislocation density, localized hardening due to geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs), slip-system-level kinematic backstresses, and annihilation of dislocations. The model further features a two level homogenization scheme where the first level is the overall response of a two-phase polycrystalline aggregate and the second level is the homogenized response of the martensite polycrystalline regions. The model is applied to simulate a cyclic tension–compression–tension deformation behavior of DP590 steel sheets. From experiments, we observe that the material exhibits a typical decreasing hardening rate during forward loading, followed by a linear and then a non-linear unloading upon the load reversal, the Bauschinger effect, and changes in hardening rate during strain reversals. To predict these effects, we identify the model parameters using a portion of the measured data and validate and verify them using the remaining data. The developed model is capable of predicting all the particular features of the cyclic deformation of DP590 steel, with great accuracy. From the predictions, we infer and discuss the effects of GNDs, the backstresses, dislocation annihilation, and the two-level homogenization scheme on capturing the cyclic deformation behavior of the material.

In this work, a model, based on a representation of the dislocation cell microstructures by a non-local two-phase material with evolving microstructures, is proposed for the elastic–plastic behavior of metals under monotonic and sequential loading. The first phase represents the cell interior and the second one, the cell walls. The evolution of the microstructure is taken into account considering the cell-wall interfaces as free boundaries. Finally, the accumulation within walls of dislocations crossing the cells defines a non-local hardening process. Assuming a piecewise uniform plastic strain field and assuming ellipsoidal cells, the free energy of the system is calculated. The driving and critical forces associated with the plastic flow of the two-phases and the morphology of the cells are established. In a third part, numerical results are presented for monotonic and sequential loading. The results show an overall softening related to the destabilization of the dislocation microstructures which occurs in sequential as well as monotonic paths.

In order to predict the deformations under multi-axial and multi-path loadings in a phenomenological framework, a new rotational-isotropic-kinematic (RIK) hardening model has been suggested in the theory part of the paper combining isotropic, kinematic and rotational hardening. Essential features of this material model are Armstrong–Frederick type backstress components for kinematic hardening and a plastic spin for the rotational hardening describing the evolution of the symmetry axes of the anisotropic yield function. The purpose of this article is to illustrate the significance of the RIK hardening model in sheet metal forming applications as well as in springback predictions. With the rotational hardening and a correction term related to the kinematic hardening, the flow stress in each orientation can be described with few material parameters. Several benchmark problems are considered to illustrate and assess the performance of the RIK hardening model in comparison with other hardening models and experimental results.

In this paper an anisotropic material model based on non-associated flow rule and mixed isotropic–kinematic hardening was developed and implemented into a user-defined material (UMAT) subroutine for the commercial finite element code ABAQUS. Both yield function and plastic potential were defined in the form of Hill’s [Hill, R., 1948. A theory of the yielding and plastic flow of anisotropic metals. Proc. R. Soc. Lond. A 193, 281–297] quadratic anisotropic function, where the coefficients for the yield function were determined from the yield stresses in different material orientations, and those of the plastic potential were determined from the r-values in different directions. Isotropic hardening follows a nonlinear behavior, generally in the power law form for most grades of steel and the exponential law form for aluminum alloys. Also, a kinematic hardening law was implemented to account for cyclic loading effects. The evolution of the backstress tensor was modeled based on the nonlinear kinematic hardening theory (Armstrong–Frederick formulation). Computational plasticity equations were then formulated by using a return-mapping algorithm to integrate the stress over each time increment. Either explicit or implicit time integration schemes can be used for this model. Finally, the implemented material model was utilized to simulate two sheet metal forming processes: the cup drawing of AA2090-T3, and the springback of the channel drawing of two sheet materials (DP600 and AA6022-T43). Experimental cyclic shear tests were carried out in order to determine the cyclic stress–strain behavior and the Bauschinger ratio. The in-plane anisotropy (r-value and yield stress directionalities) of these sheet materials was also compared with the results of numerical simulations using the non-associated model. These results showed that this non-associated, mixed hardening model significantly improves the prediction of earing in the cup drawing process and the prediction of springback in the sidewall of drawn channel sections, even when a simple quadratic constitutive model is used.

Cyclic plasticity experiments were conducted on a pure polycrystalline copper and the material was found to display significant cyclic hardening and nonproportional hardening. An effort was made to describe the cyclic plasticity behavior of the material. The model is based on the framework using a yield surface together with the Armstrong–Frederick type kinematic hardening rule. No isotropic hardening is considered and the yield stress is assumed to be a constant. The backstress is decomposed into additive parts with each part following the Armstrong–Frederick type hardening rule. A memory surface in the plastic strain space is used to account for the strain range effect. The Tanaka fourth order tensor is used to characterize nonproportional loading. A set of material parameters in the hardening rules are related to the strain memory surface size and they are used to capture the strain range effect and the dependence of cyclic hardening and nonproportional hardening on the loading magnitude. The constitutive model can describe well the transient behavior during cyclic hardening and nonproportional hardening of the polycrystalline copper. Modeling of long-term ratcheting deformation is a difficult task and further investigations are required.

The rate-dependent behavior of micron-scale model planar crystals is investigated using the framework of mechanism-based discrete dislocation plasticity. Long-range interactions between dislocations are accounted for through elasticity. Mechanism-based constitutive rules are used to represent the short-range interactions between dislocations, including dislocation multiplication and dislocation escape at free surfaces. Emphasis is laid on circumstances where the deformed samples are not statistically homogeneous. The calculations show that dimensional constraints selectively set the operating dislocation mechanisms, thus giving rise to the phenomenon of exhaustion hardening whereby the applied strain rate is predominantly accommodated by elastic deformation. When conditions are met for this type of hardening to take place, the calculations reproduce some interesting qualitative features of plastic deformation in microcrystals, such as flow intermittency over coarse time-scales and large values of the flow stress with no significant accumulation of dislocation density. In addition, the applied strain rate is varied down to 0.1 s−1 and is found to affect the rate of exhaustion hardening.

This paper critically evaluates the performance of five constitutive models in predicting ratcheting responses of carbon steel for a broad set of uniaxial and biaxial loading histories. The models proposed by Prager, Armstrong and Frederick, Chaboche, Ohno-Wang and Guionnet are examined. Reasons for success and failure in simulating ratcheting by these models are elaborated. The bilinear Prager and the nonlinear Armstrong-Frederick models are found to be inadequate in simulating ratcheting responses. The Chaboche and Ohno-Wang models perform quite well in predicting uniaxial ratcheting responses; however, they consistently overpredict the biaxial ratcheting responses. The Guionnet model simulates one set of biaxial ratcheting responses very well, but fails to simulate uniaxial and other biaxial ratcheting responses. Similar to many earlier studies, this study also indicates a strong influence of the kinematic hardening rule or backstress direction on multiaxial ratcheting simulation. Incorporation of parameters dependent on multiaxial ratcheting responses, while dormant for uniaxial responses, into Chaboche-type kinematic hardening rules may be conducive to improve their multiaxial ratcheting simulations. The uncoupling of the kinematic hardening rule from the plastic modulus calculation is another potentially viable alternative. The best option to achieve a robust model for ratcheting simulations seems to be the incorporation of yield surface shape change (formative hardening) in the cyclic plasticity model.

A thermodynamical theory of gradient elastoplasticity, including kinematic hardening, is developed by introducing the concept of dislocation density tensor. The theory is self-consistent and is based on two fundamental principles, the principle of increase of entropy and the maximal entropy production rate. Thermodynamically consistent constitutive equations for plastic stretching, plastic spin and back stress are rigorously derived. Also, an expression for the plastic spin is obtained from the constitutive equation of dislocation drift rate and an expression for the back stress is given as a balance equation expressing equilibrium between internal stress and microstress conjugate to the dislocation density tensor. Moreover, it is shown that the present gradient theory yields a symmetric stress tensor. Some generalities and utility of this theory are discussed and comparisons with other gradient theories are given.

Strain localization and dislocation pattern formation are typical features of plastic deformation in metals and alloys. Glide and climb dislocation motion, along with accompanying production/annihilation processes, lead to the occurrence of instabilities of initially uniform dislocation distributions. These instabilities result to the development of various types of dislocation microstructures (dislocation cells, slip and kink bands, persistent slip bands, labyrinth structures, etc.), depending on the externally applied loading and the intrinsic lattice constraints. The term “dislocation patterning” was introduced over 20 years ago by the third author and a corresponding “gradient dislocation dynamics” framework was suggested to describe such phenomena. In the W–A model proposed at that time by the last two authors, it was shown how coupled nonlinear evolution equations of the reaction-diffusion type for the forest (immobile) and gliding (mobile) dislocation densities can generate dislocation microstructures which correspond to walls perpendicular to the slip direction for Cu-crystals oriented for single slip under cyclic loading conditions. This model is adapted to the multiple slip case here. Weakly nonlinear analysis predicts that dislocation patterns should correspond to domains of walls perpendicular to each slip direction and separated by domain walls in the same orientations. This result is confirmed by numerical analysis and experimental observations. The present model generalizes the original W–A model to the case of multiple slip and considers also explicitly gradient effects by allowing for non-uniform dislocation velocities and internal stress effects.

Summary The main objective of the paper is the investigation of the influence of the anisotrophy and plastic spin effects on criteria for adiabatic shear band localization of plastic deformation. A theory of thermoplasticity is formulated within a framework of the rate-type covariance material structure with a finite set of internal state variables. The theory takes into consideration such effects as plastic non-normality, plastic-induced anisotropy (kinematic hardening), micro-damage mechanism, thermomechanical coupling and plastic spin. The next objective of the paper is to focus attention on cooperative phenomena in presence of the plastic spin, and the discussion on the influence of synergetic effects on localization criteria. A particular constitutive law for the plastic spin is assumed. The necessary condition for a localized plastic deformation region to be formed is obtained. This condition is accomplished by the assumption that some eigenvalues of the instantaneous adiabatic acoustic tensor vanish. A procedure has been developed which allows us to discuss two separate groups of effects on the localization phenomenon along a shear band. Plastic spin, spatial covariance and kinematic hardening effects are investigated at an isothermal process in an undamaged solid. In the second case, an adiabatic process in a damaged solid is discussed when the spatial covariance terms and the plastic spin are neglected. Here the thermomechanical coupling, micro-damage mechanism and kinematic hardening effects are examined. For both cases, the criteria for adiabatic shear band localization are obtained in an exact analytical form. Particular attention is focused on the analysis of the following effects: (i) plastic non-normality; (ii) plastic spin; (iii) covariant terms; (iv) plastic strain-induced anisotropy; (v) micro-damage mechanism; (vi) thermomechanical couplings. Cooperative phenomena are considered, and synergetic effects are investigated. A discussion of the influence of the plastic spin, kinematic hardening and covariant terms on the shear band localization conditions is presented. A numerical estimation of the effects discussed is given. Received 24 April 1997; accepted for publication 23 December 1997  相似文献

This paper demonstrates that, at extreme levels of kinematic hardening, the traditional formulation of the Bodner–Partom model can produce anomalous results. The reasons for this anomalous behaviour are explained, and a reformulated version of the model is presented. This reformulation extends the range of the model to include levels of kinematic hardening that may be problematic in the traditional formulation. The formulation of the model is adjusted so as to retain the rate dependency of the original Bodner–Partom model; and to permit the values of the material parameters used with the traditional formulation to be re-used with the extended model—with the exception only of the hardening coefficients which become dimensionless constants holding different numerical values. This revised formulation also imposes associated flow, thereby ensuring phase consistency between stress and plastic strain during non-proportional loading. In this way, the anomalies are removed, the range and stability of the model is increased, and all the advantages and important features of the Bodner–Partom model are retained.

A nonlinear kinematic hardening rule is developed here within the framework of thermodynamic principles. The derived kinematic hardening evolution equation has three distinct terms: two strain hardening terms and a dynamic recovery term that operates at all times. The proposed hardening rule, which is referred in this paper as the FAPC (Fredrick and Armstrong–Phillips–Chaboche) kinematic hardening rule, shows a combined form of the Frederick and Armstrong backstress evolution equation, Phillips evolution equation, and Chaboche series rule. A new term is incorporated into the Frederick and Armstrong evolution equation that appears to have agreement with the experimental observations that show the motion of the center of the yield surface in the stress space is directed between the gradient to the surface at the stress point and the stress rate direction at that point. The model is further modified in order to simulate nonproportional cyclic hardening by proposing a measure representing the degree of nonproportionality of loading. This measure represents the topology of the incremental stress path. Numerically, it represents the angle between the current stress increment and the previous stress increment, which is interpreted through the material constants of the kinematic hardening evolution equation. This new kinematic hardening rule is incorporated in a material constitutive model based on the von Mises plasticity type and the Chaboche isotropic hardening type. Numerical integration of the incremental elasto-plastic constitutive equations is based on a simple semi-implicit return-mapping algorithm and the full Newton–Raphson iterative method is used to solve the resulting nonlinear equations. Experimental simulations are conducted for proportional and non-proportional cyclic loadings. The model shows good correlation with the experimental results.

A finite strain hyper elasto-plastic constitutive model capable to describe non-linear kinematic hardening as well as non-linear isotropic hardening is presented. In addition to the intermediate configuration and in order to model kinematic hardening, an additional configuration is introduced – the center configuration; both configurations are chosen to be isoclinic. The yield condition is formulated in terms of the Mandel stress and a back-stress with a structure similar to the Mandel stress. It is shown that the non-dissipative part of the plastic velocity gradient not governed by the thermodynamical framework and the corresponding quantity associated with the kinematic hardening influence the material behaviour to a large extent when kinematic hardening is present. However, for isotropic elasticity and isotropic hardening plasticity it is shown that the non-dissipative quantities have no influence upon the stress–strain relation. As an example, kinematic hardening von Mises plasticity is considered, which fulfils the plastic incompressibility condition and is independent of the hydrostatic pressure. To evaluate the response and to examine the influence of the non-dissipative quantities, simple shear is considered; no stress oscillations occur.

A physically based modelling and experimental investigation of the work hardening behaviour of IF steel covering a wide range of strain rates including complex strain path and/or strain rate changes are presented. In order to obtain isothermal stress–strain curves at high strain rates, a procedure has been proposed with the aid of finite element analysis. The result reveals that the apparent excess of the flow stress after a jump in strain rate, which is frequently observed in bcc metals, is in fact due to the thermal softening at large strains, and that the flow stress after a jump in strain rate tends asymptotically to the values corresponding to the curve at the new strain rate. The strain rate affects not only the short-range stress but also the long-range stress via the strain-rate dependant evolution of dislocation structures. The proposed model is based on the dislocation model of intragranular hardening proposed by Teodosiu and Hu [Teodosiu, C., Hu, Z., 1995. Evolution of the intragranular microstructure at moderate and large strains: modelling and computational significance. In: Shen, S., Dawson, P. R., (Eds.), Proceedings of Numiform'95 on Simulation of Materials Processing: Theory, Methods and Applications. Balkema, Rotterdam, pp. 173–182] and extended to strain rate sensitive one with applying the results of the thermal activation analysis. A satisfactory agreement has been achieved between model predictions and experimental results.

A physically motivated and thermodynamically consistent formulation of small strain higher-order gradient plasticity theory is presented. Based on dislocation mechanics interpretations, gradients of variables associated with kinematic and isotropic hardenings are introduced. This framework is a two non-local parameter framework that takes into consideration large variations in the plastic strain tensor and large variations in the plasticity history variable; the equivalent (effective) plastic strain. The presence of plastic strain gradients is motivated by the evolution of dislocation density tensor that results from non-vanishing net Burgers vector and, hence, incorporating additional kinematic hardening (anisotropy) effects through lattice incompatibility. The presence of gradients in the effective (scalar) plastic strain is motivated by the accumulation of geometrically necessary dislocations and, hence, incorporating additional isotropic hardening effects (i.e. strengthening). It is demonstrated that the non-local yield condition, flow rule, and non-zero microscopic boundary conditions can be derived directly from the principle of virtual power. It is also shown that the local Clausius–Duhem inequality does not hold for gradient-dependent material and, therefore, a non-local form should be adopted. The non-local Clausius–Duhem inequality has an additional term that results from microstructural long-range energy interchanges between the material points within the body. A detailed discussion on the physics and the application of proper microscopic boundary conditions, either on free surfaces, clamped surfaces, or intermediate constrained surfaces, is presented. It is shown that there is a close connection between interface/surface energy of an interface or free surface and the microscopic boundary conditions in terms of microtraction stresses. Some generalities and utility of this theory are discussed and comparisons with other gradient theories are given. Applications of the proposed theory for size effects in thin films are presented.

A systematic mathematical approach is developed in the context of uniaxial cyclic ratcheting for the parameter determination of the decomposed Chaboche hardening rule. This is achieved by deriving the relation between the evolution of the backstress and the plastic strain accumulation. Unlike current calibration techniques where a trial–error approach is employed to fit the simulation results to experimental data, the proposed method determines the parameters directly from uniaxial ratcheting experiments. Numerical results indicate that Chaboche’s hardening model is much more efficient than what has been demonstrated before. Finally, as an improvement to the decomposed model, a modification is made to one of the backstress components. This improved component enables the model to predict uniaxial ratcheting with more accuracy.
