We report on the fabrication of pH‐disintegrable polyelectrolyte multilayer‐coated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) capable of triggered co‐release of cisplatin and model drug molecules. The outer polyelectrolyte multilayer was assembled from permanently cationic polyelectrolyte, poly(allyl amine hydrochloride) (PAH), and negatively charged polyelectrolyte, P(DMA‐co‐TPAMA), consisting of N,N‐dimethylacrylamide (DMA) and 3,4,5,6‐tetrahydrophthalic anhydride‐functionalized N‐(3‐aminopropyl)methacrylamide (TPAMA) monomer units, which exhibits pH‐induced charge conversion characteristics. Thus, the subtle alteration of solution pH from 7.4 to ≈5–6 can lead to the disintegration of outer polyelectrolyte multilayers, accompanied with the co‐release of cisplatin and RhB.

Shining a light on click chemistry: The use of UV‐radiation as trigger signal provides a facile means to obtain spatial and temporal control over polymer conjugation reactions in addition to providing a further means of achieving orthogonality in click transformations. In the current contribution, UV‐radiation was employed to induce a highly efficient Diels–Alder conjugation of polymeric building blocks via the photo‐induced in situ formation of highly reactive cis‐dienes from a 2‐methylbenzophenone precursor.

Spherical single‐chain‐particles of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) were prepared in aqueous solution above the lower critical solution temperature upon the addition of sodium dodecyl sulfate. The size of the single‐chain‐particles was investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy and viscosity measurements of the corresponding solutions, indicating the absence of inter‐chain entanglements among the single‐chain‐particles.

The synthesis of cationic mono‐(6‐O‐(1‐vinylimidazolium))‐ß‐cyclodextrin with toluenesulfonate as the corresponding anion is described. Free‐radical copolymerization of the resulting host–guest complex with N‐isopropylacrylamide or N,N‐diethylacrylamide yielded copolymers showing a temperature‐controlled solubility window in water. The impact of different anionic guests and salt concentrations on solubility behavior was investigated via turbidity measurements.

ATRP of 2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethyl acrylate (DMAEA) was investigated using CuBr or CuCl with different multidentate ligands. The catalyst was found active for DMAEA polymerization when ligated with tris[2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethyl]amine. Good control over molecular weight was achieved, but quaternization of the terminal monomeric/polymeric tertiary amine by the C Br group of polyDMAEA caused chain termination. Using a chloride‐based system helped to suppress chain termination. Amphiphilic poly(methyl acrylate)‐block‐polyDMAEA was synthesized using polyMA as a macroinitiator.

A Y‐shaped amphiphilic fluorinated monomer, 1‐(1H,1H,2H,2H‐perfluorodecyloxy)‐3‐(3,6,9‐trioxadecyloxy)‐propan‐2‐yl acrylate has been synthesized and its polymerization by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) homopolymerization has been investigated. The results show that the molecular weights of the polymers are controlled and all the molecular weight distributions are lower than 1.4. Well‐defined copolymers with 2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate have been prepared by RAFT polymerization, and the surface properties of the block and random copolymers have been examined by contact angle measurement for water and hexadecane. It has been found that the surfaces of the block copolymers simultaneously exhibit excellent anti‐fog and oil‐repellent properties.

Three types of copolymers of poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) were synthesized by direct polycondensation of L ‐lactic acid and phenyl‐substituted α‐hydroxy acids (L ‐phenyllactic acid and D ‐ and L ‐mandelic acids). It was found that the glass transition temperature of the copolymers comprising L ‐mandelic acid became significantly higher (from 58 to 69 °C) with increasing content of L ‐mandelic acid (from 0 to 50 mol‐%) although the M w decreased (from 87 000 to 4 000 Da). The cast films of the L ‐mandelic acid containing copolymers showed improved tensile properties compared with those of the PLLA film. This may be due to a pinning effect of the L ‐mandelic acid units on the helix formation of PLLA, although 30% of the units were racemized. The enzymatic degradability of the L ‐mandelic acid containing copolymers was much higher than that of PLLA, as analyzed with Proteinase K® originating from Tritirachium album.

1‐Vinyl‐2‐(hydroxymethyl)imidazole ( 2 ) is synthesized by a procedure described in the literature. Corresponding copolymers with upper critical solution temperature (UCST)‐type transitions in water and high‐glass transition temperatures (Tg) are prepared by free radical copolymerization with N‐vinylimidazole ( 1 ). Depending on the copolymer composition, the cloud point can be varied between 19 and 41 °C. As the copolymer composition is identical with the monomer feed ratio, the cloud point can be easily tuned in the desired range. Furthermore, a distinctive pH‐dependence and salt effect can be observed.

Chitosan grafted oligo(L ‐lactic acid) copolymers with different length of side chain were prepared through the reaction of terminal aldehyde group of oligo(L ‐lactic acid) (OLLA) and amino groups of chitosan. The mean molecular mass of the grafting OLLA chain was ca. 600 ~ 5 000. The graft copolymers are soluble in DMSO, DMF and acetic acid. The synthesis method and structure described here provide chitosan‐g‐OLLA copolymers with broad applicability.

Herein, we report an effective and rapid method to purify glutathione S‐transferase (GST) using glutathione (GSH)‐modified poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAAm) and mild, thermal conditions. A chain transfer agent modified with pyridyl disulfide was employed in the reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of NIPAAm. The resulting polymer had a narrow molecular weight distribution (polydispersity index = 1.21). Conjugation of GSH to the pyridyl disulfide–pNIPAAm reached 95% within 30 min as determined by UV–Vis monitoring of the release of pyridine‐2‐thione. GST was successfully thermoprecipitated upon heating the GSH–pNIPAAm above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST). The pull down assay was repeated with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and T4 lysozyme (T4L), which demonstrated the specificity of the polymer for GST. Due to its simplicity and high efficiency, this method holds great potential for large‐scale purification of GST‐tagged proteins.

The monomer 3‐ethyl‐1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone ( 3 ) and the homopolymer poly(3‐ethyl‐1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone) ( 5 ) have been synthesized. Polymer 5 is soluble in water and shows a critical temperature (Tc) of 27 °C. The presence of cyclodextrin causes a slight shift of the Tc. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) could be varied between 27 and 40 °C by copolymerization with N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone. A linear correlation between the Tc and the copolymer composition is observed.

The mixed Langmuir monolayers and Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films of homo‐polystyrene (h‐PS) and the diblock copolymer polystyrene‐block‐poly(2‐vinylpyridine) (PS‐b‐P2VP) have been characterized by the Langmuir monolayer technique and tapping mode atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively. When the content of h‐PS is below 80 wt.‐%, the mixed LB films of h‐PS/PS‐b‐P2VP mainly exhibit isolated circular nanoaggregates. With a further increase of the h‐PS content (80–95%), however, highly uniform and stable necklace‐network structures are observed in the mixed LB films.

Summary: Nitroxide‐mediated polymerization of styrene in a continuous tubular reactor has been demonstrated for the first time. The polymerization kinetics in the tubular reactor are similar to those in a batch reactor. The number average molecular weight increases linearly with conversion, and chain extension experiments were successful, indicating that the living nature of the polymerization is maintained in the tubular reactor.

Summary: Diblock terpolymers that consist of homopolymer and statistical copolymer (polyampholyte) building blocks are synthesized by group transfer polymerization. Two types of block tepolymers are explored in aqueous media: the amphiphilic poly{[(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate]‐co‐(methacrylic acid)}‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) and the double hydrophilic poly[oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate]‐block‐poly{[(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate]‐co‐(methacrylic acid)}. The first terpolymer self‐assembles in aqueous media to form responsive micelles that change their corona charge sign upon switching pH. The second terpolymer exhibits a multi‐responsive behavior. It forms neutral, positive, or negative micelles depending on a combination of different environmental conditions such as temperature, pH, and ionic strength.

Summary: A series of novel, thermo‐sensitive copolymers with different molar ratios of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and hydrophobic cis‐dibenzo‐18‐crown‐6‐diacrylamide (cis‐DBCAm) were prepared via free‐radical copolymerization. cis‐DBCAm with polymerizable end groups was successfully synthesized by reacting the corresponding amino crown ether with acryloyl chloride. The copolymers were characterized by FT‐IR and elemental analysis, and the thermo‐sensitivities of the copolymers were evaluated by measuring their lower critical solution temperatures (LCSTs) in the absence or presence of various metal ions. The results indicated that incorporation of cis‐DBCAm lowered LCSTs, and that the LCSTs of the copolymers decreased with the increase in cis‐DBCAm content in the copolymers. When the cavities of the crown ether units captured either K+ or Cs+ ions, the LCST of the respective copolymer–metal ion complex was further decreased, whereas the capture of Na+ or Li+ ions did not have a significant influence on the LCSTs of the copolymers.

The synthesis of poly(N‐vinylcarbazole)‐based block copolymers functionalized with rhenium diimine complexes or pendant terpyridine ligands is reported. The copolymers are synthesized by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, and they exhibit interesting morphological properties as a result of the phase separation between different blocks. The rhenium complex polymer block may function as a photosensitizer, while the terpyridine‐containing polymer block can be used as the template for nanofabrication by selective deposition of zinc complexes.

New multifunctional copoly(2‐oxazoline) nanoparticles were prepared for cell studies. The polymer contains double‐bond side chains as potential reaction sites for “thio”‐click reactions as well as a fluorescein label covalently bound to the polymer backbone. Using the nanoprecipitation technique, spherical nanoparticles of 200–800 nm were obtained. Confocal laser scanning microscopy measurements revealed the cellular uptake of the nanoparticles.

Ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) was used for the synthesis of monolithic capillary columns with inner diameters of 200 µm. The resulting polymeric monoliths were characterized by inverse size‐exclusion chromatography (ISEC). Surface functionalization was carried out in situ using 2‐(N,N‐dimethylaminoethyl)norborn‐5‐ene‐2‐ylcarboxylic amide ( 1 ). The resulting functionalized monoliths were successfully used in anion‐exchange chromatography of oligodeoxynucleotides.
