For an integer l > 1, the l‐edge‐connectivity of a connected graph with at least l vertices is the smallest number of edges whose removal results in a graph with l components. A connected graph G is (k, l)‐edge‐connected if the l‐edge‐connectivity of G is at least k. In this paper, we present a structural characterization of minimally (k, k)‐edge‐connected graphs. As a result, former characterizations of minimally (2, 2)‐edge‐connected graphs in [J of Graph Theory 3 (1979), 15–22] are extended. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Let G = (V,E) be a graph or digraph and r : VZ+. An r‐detachment of G is a graph H obtained by ‘splitting’ each vertex ν ∈ V into r(ν) vertices. The vertices ν1,…,νr(ν) obtained by splitting ν are called the pieces of ν in H. Every edge uν ∈ E corresponds to an edge of H connecting some piece of u to some piece of ν. Crispin Nash‐Williams 9 gave necessary and sufficient conditions for a graph to have a k‐edge‐connected r‐detachment. He also solved the version where the degrees of all the pieces are specified. In this paper, we solve the same problems for directed graphs. We also give a simple and self‐contained new proof for the undirected result. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Let denote the set of graphs with each vertex of degree at least r and at most s, v(G) the number of vertices, and τk (G) the maximum number of disjoint k‐edge trees in G. In this paper we show that
  • (a1) if G ∈ and s ≥ 4, then τ2(G) ≥ v(G)/(s + 1),
  • (a2) if G ∈ and G has no 5‐vertex components, then τ2(G) ≥ v(G)4,
  • (a3) if G ∈ and G has no k‐vertex component, where k ≥ 2 and s ≥ 3, then τk(G) ≥ (v(G) ‐k)/(skk + 1), and
  • (a4) the above bounds are attained for infinitely many connected graphs.

The following question was raised by Bruce Richter. Let G be a planar, 3‐connected graph that is not a complete graph. Denoting by d(v) the degree of vertex v, is G L‐list colorable for every list assignment L with |L(v)| = min{d(v), 6} for all vV(G)? More generally, we ask for which pairs (r, k) the following question has an affirmative answer. Let r and k be the integers and let G be a K5‐minor‐free r‐connected graph that is not a Gallai tree (i.e. at least one block of G is neither a complete graph nor an odd cycle). Is G L‐list colorable for every list assignment L with |L(v)| = min{d(v), k} for all vV(G)? We investigate this question by considering the components of G[Sk], where Sk: = {vV(G)|d(v)8k} is the set of vertices with small degree in G. A graph G = (V, E) is called weakly four‐connected if G is 4‐edge‐connected and G ? x is 2‐edge‐connected for all xV. We give sufficient conditions for the existence of ‘splittable’ vertices of degree four in weakly four‐connected graphs. By using these results we prove that every minimally weakly four‐connected graph on at least four vertices contains at least three ‘splittable’ vertices of degree four, which gives rise to an inductive construction of weakly four‐connected graphs. A 2‐connected graph G is a critical block if G ? v is not 2‐connected for every vertex vV(G). A critical block G is a saturated critical block if G + e is not a critical block for any new edge e. For a connected graph the restricted edge‐connectivity λ′(G) is defined as the minimum cardinality of an edge‐cut over all edge‐cuts S such that there are no isolated vertices in GS. A graph G is said to be λ′‐optimal if λ′(G) = ξ(G), where ξ(G) is the minimum edge‐degree in G defined as ξ(G) = min{d(u) + d(v) ? 2:uvE(G)}, d(u) denoting the degree of a vertex u. A. Hellwig and L. Volkmann [Sufficient conditions for λ′‐optimality in graphs of diameter 2, Discrete Math 283 (2004), 113–120] gave a sufficient condition for λ′‐optimality in graphs of diameter 2. In this paper, we generalize this condition in graphs of diameter g ? 1, g being the girth of the graph, and show that a graph G with diameter at most g ? 2 is λ′‐optimal. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Given graphs G, H, and lists L(v) ? V(H), v ε V(G), a list homomorphism of G to H with respect to the lists L is a mapping f : V(G) → V(H) such that uv ε E(G) implies f(u)f(v) ε E(H), and f(v) ε L(v) for all v ε V(G). The list homomorphism problem for a fixed graph H asks whether or not an input graph G, together with lists L(v) ? V(H), v ε V(G), admits a list homomorphism with respect to L. In two earlier papers, we classified the complexity of the list homomorphism problem in two important special cases: When H is a reflexive graph (every vertex has a loop), the problem is polynomial time solvable if H is an interval graph, and is NP‐complete otherwise. When H is an irreflexive graph (no vertex has a loop), the problem is polynomial time solvable if H is bipartite and H is a circular arc graph, and is NP‐complete otherwise. In this paper, we extend these classifications to arbitrary graphs H (each vertex may or may not have a loop). We introduce a new class of graphs, called bi‐arc graphs, which contains both reflexive interval graphs (and no other reflexive graphs), and bipartite graphs with circular arc complements (and no other irreflexive graphs). We show that the problem is polynomial time solvable when H is a bi‐arc graph, and is NP‐complete otherwise. Given a simple plane graph G, an edge‐face k‐coloring of G is a function ? : E(G) ∪ F(G) → {1,…,k} such that, for any two adjacent or incident elements a, bE(G) ∪ F(G), ?(a) ≠ ?(b). Let χe(G), χef(G), and Δ(G) denote the edge chromatic number, the edge‐face chromatic number, and the maximum degree of G, respectively. A graph G is a quasi‐line graph if for every vertex vV(G), the set of neighbors of v in G can be expressed as the union of two cliques. The class of quasi‐line graphs is a proper superset of the class of line graphs. Hadwiger's conjecture states that if a graph G is not t‐colorable then it contains Kt + 1 as a minor. It is well‐known that every planar graph has a vertex of degree at most five. Kotzig proved that every 3‐connected planar graph has an edge xy such that deg(x) + deg (y) ≤ 13. In this article, considering a similar problem for the case of three or more vertices that induce a connected subgraph, we show that, for a given positive integer t, every 3‐connected planar graph G with |V(G)| ≥ t has a connected subgraph H of order t such that ΣxV(H) degG(x) ≤ 8t − 1. As a tool for proving this result, we consider decompositions of 3‐connected planar graphs into connected subgraphs of order at least t and at most 2t − 1. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. We show that one can choose the minimum degree of a k‐connected graph G large enough (independent of the vertex number of G) such that G contains a copy T of a prescribed tree with the property that G ? A result of G. Chartrand, A. Kaugars, and D. R. Lick [Proc Amer Math Soc 32 (1972), 63–68] says that every finite, k‐connected graph G of minimum degree at least ?3k/2? contains a vertex x such that G?x is still k‐connected. We generalize this result by proving that every finite, k‐connected graph G of minimum degree at least ?3k/2?+m?1 for a positive integer m contains a path P of length m?1 such that G?V(P) is still k‐connected. Let G be a graph and let V0 = {ν∈ V(G): dG(ν) = 6}. We show in this paper that: (i) if G is a 6‐connected line graph and if |V0| ≤ 29 or G[V0] contains at most 5 vertex disjoint K4's, then G is Hamilton‐connected; (ii) every 8‐connected claw‐free graph is Hamilton‐connected. A graph G is 1‐Hamilton‐connected if G?x is Hamilton‐connected for every xV(G), and G is 2‐edge‐Hamilton‐connected if the graph G+ X has a hamiltonian cycle containing all edges of X for any X?E+(G) = {xy| x, yV(G)} with 1≤|X|≤2. We prove that Thomassen's conjecture (every 4‐connected line graph is hamiltonian, or, equivalently, every snark has a dominating cycle) is equivalent to the statements that every 4‐connected line graph is 1‐Hamilton‐connected and/or 2‐edge‐Hamilton‐connected. As a corollary, we obtain that Thomassen's conjecture implies polynomiality of both 1‐Hamilton‐connectedness and 2‐edge‐Hamilton‐connectedness in line graphs. Consequently, proving that 1‐Hamilton‐connectedness is NP‐complete in line graphs would disprove Thomassen's conjecture, unless P = NP. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An edge‐coloring of a graph G is equitable if, for each vV(G), the number of edges colored with any one color incident with v differs from the number of edges colored with any other color incident with v by at most one. A new sufficient condition for equitable edge‐colorings of simple graphs is obtained. For a fixed (multi)graph H, a graph G is H‐linked if any injection f: V(H)→V(G) can be extended to an H‐subdivision in G. The notion of an H ‐linked graph encompasses several familiar graph classes, including k‐linked, k‐ordered and k‐connected graphs. In this article, we give two sharp Ore‐type degree sum conditions that assure a graph G is H ‐linked for arbitrary H. An odd k‐edge‐coloring of a graph G is a (not necessarily proper) edge‐coloring with at most k colors such that each nonempty color class induces a graph in which every vertex is of odd degree. Pyber (1991) showed that every simple graph is odd 4‐edge‐colorable, and Lužar et al. (2015) showed that connected loopless graphs are odd 5‐edge‐colorable, with one particular exception that is odd 6‐edge‐colorable. In this article, we prove that connected loopless graphs are odd 4‐edge‐colorable, with two particular exceptions that are respectively odd 5‐ and odd 6‐edge‐colorable. The restricted‐edge‐connectivity of a graph G, denoted by λ′(G), is defined as the minimum cardinality over all edge‐cuts S of G, where GS contains no isolated vertices. The graph G is called λ′‐optimal, if λ′(G) = ξ(G), where ξ(G) is the minimum edge‐degree in G. A graph is super‐edge‐connected, if every minimum edge‐cut consists of edges adjacent to a vertex of minimum degree. In this paper, we present sufficient conditions for arbitrary, triangle‐free, and bipartite graphs to be λ′‐optimal, as well as conditions depending on the clique number. These conditions imply super‐edge‐connectivity, if δ (G) ≥ 3, and the equality of edge‐connectivity and minimum degree. We prove that if G is a 5‐connected graph embedded on a surface Σ (other than the sphere) with face‐width at least 5, then G contains a subdivision of K5. This is a special case of a conjecture of P. Seymour, that every 5‐connected nonplanar graph contains a subdivision of K5. Moreover, we prove that if G is 6‐connected and embedded with face‐width at least 5, then for every vV(G), G contains a subdivision of K5 whose branch vertices are v and four neighbors of v.  相似文献
