A novel ligand 4,4'-bis(carboxyvinyl)-2,2'-bipyridine (L) and its ruthenium(II) complex [Ru(II)L(2)(NCS)(2)] (K8) were synthesized and characterized by analytical, spectroscopic, and electrochemical techniques. The performance of the K8 complex as a charge transfer photosensitizer in nanocrystalline TiO(2) based solar cells was studied. When the K8 complex anchored onto a nanocrystalline TiO(2) film, we achieved very efficient sensitization yielding 77 +/-5% incident photon-to-current efficiencies (IPCE) in the visible region using an electrolyte consisting of 0.6 M methyl-N-butyl imidiazolium iodide, 0.05 M iodine, 0.05 M LiI, and 0.5 M 4-tert-butylpyridine in a 50/50 (v/v) mixture of valeronitrile and acetonitrile. Under standard AM 1.5 sunlight, the complex K8 gave a short circuit photocurrent density of 18 +/- 0.5 mA/cm(2), and the open circuit voltage was 640 +/- 50 mV with fill factor of 0.75 +/- 0.05, corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 8.64 +/- 0.5%.  相似文献

An extremely easy method is presented for producing surfactant-free films of nanocrystalline TiO2 at room temperature with excellent mechanical stability when deposited on glass or plastic electrodes for dye-sensitized solar energy conversion. Prolonged magnetic stirring of commercial TiO2 nanoparticles (Degussa P25) in either ethanol or water results in highly homogeneous dispersions which are used to prepare TiO2 films with surface properties which depend on the solvent used for dispersing the particles, even after sintering. The optical and mechanical properties of films cast from ethanol and water dispersions are compared, and differences in the extent of surface defects and dye binding are observed. Optical absorption, photoluminescence, and resonance Raman spectra of TiO2 films sensitized with Ru(4,4'-dicarboxylic acid-2,2'-bipyridine)2(NCS)2 ("N3") reveal that the electronic coupling of the dye and semiconductor depends on the surface structure of the film which varies with film preparation. Current-voltage data for illuminated and dark dye-sensitized solar cells are obtained as a function of film preparation, and results are compared to spectroscopic data in order to interpret the microscopic basis for variations in solar cell performance, especially with regard to sintered versus unsintered TiO2 films. The results suggest that surface traps associated with oxygen vacancies play a critical role in determining the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar energy conversion through their influence on the binding and electronic coupling of the dye to the semiconductor.  相似文献

We have developed oligothiophene-containing coumarin dyes fully functionalized for dye-sensitized nanocrystalline TiO(2) solar cells (DSSCs). DSSCs based on the dyes gave good performance in terms of incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) in the range of 400-800 nm. A solar energy-to-electricity conversion efficiency (eta) of 7.4% was obtained with a DSSC based on 2-cyano-3-[5'-(1,1,6,6-tetramethyl-10-oxo-2,3,5,6-tetrahydro-1H,4H,10H-11-oxa-3a-aza-benzo[de]anthracen-9-yl)-[2,2']bithiophenyl-5-yl]acrylic acid (NKX-2677) under simulated AM 1.5G irradiation (100 mW cm(-2)) with a mask: short-circuit current density (J(sc)) = 13.5 mA cm(-2); open-circuit voltage (V(oc)) = 0.71 V; fill factor (FF) = 0.77. Transient absorption spectroscopy measurements indicated that electron injection from NKX-2677 to the conduction band of TiO(2) is very rapid (<100 fs), which is much faster than the emission lifetime of the dye (1.0 ns), giving a highly efficient electron injection yield of near unity.  相似文献

A zinc phthalocyanine with tyrosine substituents (ZnPcTyr), modified for efficient far-red/near-IR performance in dye-sensitized nanostructured TiO(2) solar cells, and its reference, glycine-substituted zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPcGly), were synthesized and characterized. The compounds were studied spectroscopically, electrochemically, and photoelectrochemically. Incorporating tyrosine groups into phthalocyanine makes the dye ethanol-soluble and reduces surface aggregation as a result of steric effects. The performance of a solar cell based on ZnPcTyr is much better than that based on ZnPcGly. Addition of 3alpha,7alpha-dihydroxy-5beta-cholic acid (cheno) and 4-tert-butylpyridine (TBP) to the dye solution when preparing a dye-sensitized TiO(2) electrode diminishes significantly the surface aggregation and, therefore, improves the performance of solar cells based on these phthalocyanines. The highest monochromatic incident photo-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) of approximately 24% at 690 nm and an overall conversion efficiency (eta) of 0.54% were achieved for a cell based on a ZnPcTyr-sensitized TiO(2) electrode. Addition of TBP in the electrolyte decreases the IPCE and eta considerably, although it increases the open-circuit photovoltage. Time-resolved transient absorption measurements of interfacial electron-transfer kinetics in a ZnPcTyr-sensitized nanostructured TiO(2) thin film show that electron injection from the excited state of the dye into the conduction band of TiO(2) is completed in approximately 500 fs and that more than half of the injected electrons recombines with the oxidized dye molecules in approximately 300 ps. In addition to surface aggregation, the very fast electron recombination is most likely responsible for the low performance of the solar cell based on ZnPcTyr.  相似文献

A nanoporous CaCO3 overlayer-coated TiO2 thick film was prepared by the topotactic thermal decomposition of Ca(OH)2, and its performance as an electrode of a dye-sensitized solar cell was investigated. As compared to bare TiO2, nanoporous CaCO3-coated TiO2 provided higher specific surface area and, subsequently, a larger amount of dye adsorption; this in turn increased short-circuit current (Jsc). Furthermore, the CaCO3 coating demonstrated increased impedance at the TiO2/dye/electrolyte interface and increased the lifetime of the photoelectrons, indicating the improved retardation of the back electron transfer, which increases Jsc, open-circuit voltage (Voc), and fill factor (ff). Thereby, the energy conversion efficiency (eta) of the solar cell improved from 7.8 to 9.7% (an improvement of 24.4%) as the nanoporous CaCO3 layer was coated onto TiO2 thick films.  相似文献

Resonance Raman spectra are reported for Ru(4,4'-dicarboxylic acid-2,2'-bipyridine)2(NCS)2 (commonly called "N3") in ethanol solution and adsorbed on nanoparticulate colloidal TiO2 in ethanol (EtOH) and in acetonitrile (ACN), at wavelengths within the visible absorption band of the dye. Raman cross sections of free N3 in EtOH are found to be similar to those of N3 adsorbed on colloidal TiO2 in EtOH, and are generally lower than those of N3 on TiO2 in ACN. Strong electronic coupling mediated by surface states results in red-shifted absorption spectra and enhanced Raman signals for N3 adsorbed on nanocolloidal TiO2 in ACN compared to EtOH. In contrast, the absorption spectrum of N3 on nanocrystalline TiO2 in contact with solvent is similar for ACN and EtOH. Wavelength-dependent depolarization ratios for N3 Raman bands of both free and adsorbed N3 reveal resonance enhancement via two or more excited electronic states. Luminescence spectra of N3 adsorbed on nanocrystalline films of TiO2 and ZrO2 in contact with solvent reveal that the quantum yield of electron injection phi(ET) into TiO2 decreases in the order ACN > EtOH > DMSO. Dye-sensitized solar cells were fabricated with N3 adsorbed on nanocrystalline films of TiO2 in contact with ACN, EtOH, and DMSO solutions containing LiI/LiI3 electrolyte. Photoconversion efficiencies eta were found to be 2.6% in ACN, 1.3% in DMSO, and 0.84% in EtOH. Higher short circuit currents are found in cells using ACN, while the maximum voltage is found to be largest in DMSO. It is concluded that the increased photocurrent and quantum yield of interfacial electron transfer in acetonitrile as compared to ethanol and DMSO is primarily the result of faster electron injection of N3 when adsorbed on TiO2 in the presence of ACN as opposed to EtOH or DMSO.  相似文献

Electrode structures and photovoltaic properties of porphyrin-sensitized solar cells with TiO2 and Nb-, Ge-, and Zr-added TiO2 composite electrodes were examined to disclose the effects of partial substitution of Ti atom by the other metals in the composite electrodes. The TiO2 and Nb-, Ge-, and Zr-added TiO2 composite electrodes were prepared by sol-gel process using laurylamine hydrochloride as a template for the formation of micellar precursors yielding well-defined mesoporous nanocrystalline structures, as in the cases of the formation of silica and titania tubules and nanoparticles by the templating mechanism. The TiO2 and Nb-, Ge-, and Zr-added TiO2 composite electrodes were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, BET surface area analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, Raman spectroscopy, and impedance measurements. The TiO2 anatase nanocrystalline structure is retained after doping a small amount (5 mol %) of Nb, Ge, or Zr into the TiO2 structure, suggesting the homogeneous distribution of the doped metals with replacing Ti atom by the doped metal. The power conversion efficiency of the porphyrin-sensitized solar cells increases in the order Zr-added TiO2 (0.8%) < Nb-added TiO2 (1.2%) < TiO2 (2.0%) < Ge-added TiO2 cells (2.4%) under the same conditions. The improvement of cell performance of the Ge-added TiO2 cell results from the negative shift of the conduction band of the Ge-added TiO2 electrode. The Ge-added TiO2 cell exhibited a maximum power conversion efficiency of 3.5% when the porphyrin was adsorbed onto the surface of the Ge-added TiO2 electrode with a thickness of 4 microm in MeOH for 1 h.  相似文献

Amphiphilic ligands 4,4'-bis(1-adamantyl-aminocarbonyl)-2,2'-bipyridine (L(1)), 4,4'-bis[5-[N-[2-(3beta-cholest-5-en-3-ylcarbamate-N-yl)ethyl]aminocarbonyl]]-2,2'-bipyridine (L(2)), 4,4'-bis[5-[N-[2-(3beta-cholest-5-en-3-ylcarbamate-N-yl)propyl]aminocarbonyl]]-2,2'-bipyridine (L(3)), and 4,4'-bis(dodecan-12-ol)-2,2'-bipyridine (L(4)) and their heteroleptic ruthenium(II) complexes of the type [Ru(II)LL(1)(NCS)(2)] (5), [Ru(II)LL(2)(NCS)(2)] (6), [Ru(II)LL(3)(NCS)(2)] (7), and [Ru(II)LL(4)(NCS)(2)] (8) (where L = 4,4'-bis(carboxylic acid)-2,2'-bipyridine) have been synthesized starting from dichloro(p-cymene)ruthenium(II) dimer. All the ligands and the complexes were characterized by analytical, spectroscopic, and electrochemical techniques. The performance of these complexes as charge-transfer photosensitizers in nanocrystalline TiO(2)-based solar cells was studied. When complexes 5-8 anchored onto a 12 + 4 microm thick nanocrystalline TiO(2) films, very efficient sensitization was achieved (85 +/- 5% incident photon-to-current efficiencies in the visible region, using an electrolyte consisting of 0.6 M butylmethylimidazolium iodide, 0.05 M I(2), 0.1 M LiI, and 0.5 M tert-butyl pyridine in 1:1 acetonitrile + valeronitrile). Under standard AM 1.5 sunlight, the complex 8 yielded a short-circuit photocurrent density of 17 +/- 0.5 mA/cm(2), the open-circuit voltage was 720 +/- 50 mV, and the fill factor was 0.72 +/- 0.05, corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 8.8 +/- 0.5%.  相似文献

This paper describes the influence of acid pretreatment ofTiO2 mesoporous films prior to dye sensitization on the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells based on [(C4H9)4N]3[Ru(Htcterpy)(NCS)3] (tcterpy = 4,4',4"-tricarboxy- 2,2',2"-terpyridine), the so-called black dye. The HCl pretreatment caused an increase in overall efficiency by 8%, with a major contribution from photocurrent improvement. It is speculated, from the analysis of incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency, UV-vis absorption spectra, redox properties of the dye and TiO2, and the impedance spectra of the dye-sensitized solar cells, that photocurrent enhancement is attributed to the increases in electron injection and/or charge collection efficiency besides the improvement of light harvesting efficiency upon HCl pretreatment. Open-circuit photovoltage (V(oc)) remained almost unchanged in the case of significant positive shift of flat band potential for TiO2 upon HCl pretreatment. The suppression of electron transfer from conduction band electrons to the I3- ions in the electrolyte upon HCl pretreatment, reflected by the increased resistance at the TiO2/dye/electrolyte interface and reduced dark current, resulted in a V(oc) gain, which compensated the V(oc) loss due to the positive shift of the flat band. Using the HCl pretreatment approach, 10.5% of overall efficiency with the black dye was obtained under illumination of simulated AM 1.5 solar light (100 mW cm(-2)) using an antireflection film on the cell surface.  相似文献

We have designed and synthesized a new thiocyanate-free sensitizer coded as SPS-01 and used it as the sensitizer in a TiO(2) based nanocrystalline dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). SPS-01 exhibits strong visible absorption properties with maximum peak around at 532 nm. The overall power conversion efficiency (PCE) of a DSSC sensitized with SPS-01 (7.96%) is higher than that of N719 (7.30%) under identical experimental conditions. This high PCE is attributed mainly due to the improvement in the short circuit current.  相似文献

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are fabricated using a novel 3C-SiC/TiO(2) nanocomposite as a photoelectrode to enhance the power conversion efficiency. Compared with a pristine nanocrystalline TiO(2) cell, a DSSC based on a 3C-SiC (0.04 wt%)/TiO(2) nanocomposite photoelectrode shows ~115% increase in power conversion efficiency.  相似文献

The sensitizers [Ru(bpy)2(deeb)](PF6)2 (1), [Ru(bpy)2(bpy)-(E-Ph)-Ad](PF6)2 (2), and [Ru(bpy)2(bpy)-(E-Ph)2-Ad](PF6)2 (3), where deeb is 4,4'-(COOCH2CH3)2-2,2'-bipyridine, E-Ph is phenylethynyl, and Ad are tripod shaped bpy ligands based on 1,3,5,7-tetraphenyladamantane, were anchored to mesoporous nanocrystalline (anatase) TiO2 thin films and studied in regenerative solar cells with 0.1 M LiI/0.005 M I2 dichloromethane electrolyte. Over three decades of 488 nm irradiance, the open circuit photovoltage increased markedly with the distance between the Ru center and the surface binding groups, 1 (7 A) < 2 (18 A) < 3 (24 A). The diode equation accurately models the irradiance dependent data and indicates that the TiO2(e-) --> I3- (and/or I2) charge recombination rate constants were decreased by a factor of 20 for 2/TiO2 and 280 for 3/TiO2 relative to 1/TiO2. The results suggest that control of the sensitizer-TiO2 orientation is important for efficient power optimization.  相似文献

Sol-gel-derived Mg(OH)(2) gel was coated onto TiO(2) nanoparticles, and the subsequent thermal topotactic decomposition of the gel formed a highly nanoporous MgO crystalline coating. The specific surface area of the electrode that was prepared from the core-shell-structured TiO(2) nanoparticles significantly increased compared with that of the uncoated TiO(2) electrode. The increase in the specific surface area of the MgO-coated TiO(2) electrode was attributed to the highly nanoporous MgO coating layer that resulted from the topotactic reaction. Dye adsorption behavior and solar cell performance were significantly enhanced by employing the MgO-coated TiO(2) electrode. Optimized coating of a MgO layer on TiO(2) nanoparticles enhanced the energy conversion efficiency as much as 45% compared to that of the uncoated TiO(2) electrode. This indicates that controlling the extrinsic parameters such as the specific surface area is very important to improve the energy conversion efficiency of TiO(2)-based solar cells.  相似文献

In this study, the influence of the TiCl(4) post-treatment on nanocrystalline TiO(2) films as electrodes in dye-sensitized solar cells is investigated and compared to nontreated films. As a result of this post-treatment cell efficiencies are improved, due to higher photocurrents. On a microscopic scale TiO(2) particle growth on the order of 1 nm is observed. Despite a corresponding decrease of BET surface area, more dye is adsorbed onto the oxide surface. Although it seems trivial to match this finding with the improved photocurrent, this performance improvement cannot be attributed to higher dye adsorption only. This follows from comparison between incident photon to current conversion efficiency (IPCE) and light absorption characteristics. Since the charge transport properties of the TiO(2) films are already more than sufficient without treatment, the increase in short circuit current density J(SC) cannot be related to improvements in charge transport either. Transient photocurrent measurements indicate a shift in the conduction band edge of the TiO(2) upon TiCl(4) treatment. It is concluded that the main contribution to enhanced current originates from this shift in conduction band edge, resulting in improved charge injection into the TiO(2).  相似文献

The yields and dynamics for energy transfer from the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer excited states of Ru(deeb)(bpy)(2)(PF(6))(2), Ru(2+), and Os(deeb)(bpy)(2)(PF(6))(2), Os(2+), where deeb is 4,4'-(CH(3)CH(2)CO(2))(2)-2,2'-bipyridine, anchored to mesoporous nanocrystalline (anatase) TiO(2) thin films were quantified. Lateral energy transfer from Ru(2+)* to Os(2+) was observed, and the yields were measured as a function of the relative surface coverage and the external solvent environment (CH(3)CN, THF, CCl(4), and hexanes). Excited-state decay of Ru(2+)*/TiO(2) was well described by a parallel first- and second-order kinetic model, whereas Os(2+)*/TiO(2) decayed with first-order kinetics within experimental error. The first-order component was assigned to the radiative and nonradiative decay pathways (tau = 1 micros for Ru(2+)*/TiO(2) and tau = 50 ns for Os(2+)*/TiO(2)). The second-order component was attributed to intermolecular energy transfer followed by triplet-triplet annihilation. An analytical model was derived that allowed determination of the fraction of excited-states that follow the two pathways. The fraction of Ru(2+)*/TiO(2) that decayed through the second-order pathway increased with surface coverage and excitation intensity. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to estimate the Ru(2+)* --> Ru(2+) intermolecular energy transfer rate constant of (30 ns)(-1).  相似文献

Transient anisotropy measurements are reported as a new spectroscopic tool for mechanistic characterization of photoinduced charge-transfer and energy-transfer self-exchange reactions at molecule-semiconductor interfaces. An anisotropic molecular subpopulation was generated by photoselection of randomly oriented Ru(II)-polypyridyl compounds, anchored to mesoscopic nanocrystalline TiO(2) or ZrO(2) thin films, with linearly polarized light. Subsequent characterization of the photoinduced dichromism change by visible absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopies on the nano- to millisecond time scale enabled the direct comparison of competitive processes: excited-state decay vs self-exchange energy transfer, or interfacial charge recombination vs self-exchange hole transfer. Self-exchange energy transfer was found to be many orders-of-magnitude faster than hole transfer at the sensitized TiO(2) interfaces; for [Ru(dtb)(2)(dcb)](PF(6))(2), where dtb is 4,4'-(C(CH(3))(3))(2)-2,2'-bipyridine and dcb is 4,4'-(COOH)(2)-2,2'-bipyridine, anchored to TiO(2), the energy-transfer correlation time was θ(ent) = 3.3 μs while the average hole-transfer correlation time was <θ(h+)> = 110 ms, under identical experimental conditions. Monte Carlo simulations successfully modeled the anisotropy decays associated with lateral energy transfer. These mesoscopic, nanocrystalline TiO(2) thin films developed for regenerative solar cells thus function as active "antennae", harvesting sunlight and transferring energy across their surface. For the dicationic sensitizer, [Ru(dtb)(2)(dcb)](PF(6))(2), anisotropy changes indicative of self-exchange hole transfer were observed only when ions were present in the acetonitrile solution. In contrast, evidence for lateral hole transfer was observed in neat acetonitrile for a neutral sensitizer, cis-Ru(dnb)(dcb)(NCS)(2), where dnb is 4,4'-(CH(3)(CH(2))(8))(2)-2,2'-bipyridine, anchored to TiO(2). The results indicate that mechanistic models of interfacial charge recombination between electrons in TiO(2) and oxidized sensitizers must take into account diffusion of the injected electron and the oxidized sensitizer. The phenomena presented herein represent two means of concentrating potential energy derived from visible light that could be used to funnel energy to molecular catalysts for multiple-charge-transfer reactions, such as the generation of solar fuels.  相似文献

The coordination compound Ru(NH(3))(5)(eina)(PF(6))(2), where eina is ethyl isonicotinate, was synthesized and attached to optically transparent nanocrystalline (anatase) TiO(2) films, abbreviated Ru(NH(3))(5)(eina)/TiO(2). The metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer (MLCT) absorption was found to shift in wavelength with solvent. The absorption maximum of the low energy MLCT band was observed at 486 nm in acetonitrile and 528 nm in dimethylformamide for Ru(NH(3))(5)(eina)(PF(6))(2) and at 512 and 555 nm for Ru(NH(3))(5)(eina)/TiO(2), respectively. The compound was found to be nonemissive with an excited state lifetime <10 ns under all conditions studied. Light excitation in fluid solution and when attached to insulating ZrO(2) films resulted in a loss of the MLCT absorption, consistent with ligand field photochemistry. Pulsed light excitation of Ru(NH(3))(5)(eina)/TiO(2) yields an absorption difference spectrum consistent with an interfacial charge separated state, Ru(III)(NH(3))(5)(eina)/TiO(2)(e(-)). This state forms within 10 ns and returns cleanly to ground state product within milliseconds. The injection quantum yields were determined by comparative actinometry and were found to be excitation wavelength dependent: phi(inj)(417 nm) = 0.30 +/- 0.05 and phi(inj)(532.5 nm) = 0.15 +/- 0.03. Regenerative solar cells based on Ru(NH(3))(5)(eina)/TiO(2) with 0.5 M TBAI, where TBA is tetrabutylammonium, and 0.05 M I(2) in acetonitrile were very inefficient. Sluggish iodide oxidation is expected, on the basis of the negative E degrees (Ru(III/II)) = +0.17 (V vs Ag/AgCl) reduction potential, and this presumably allows a greater fraction of the injected electrons to recombine with the oxidized compound thereby lowering the solar cell efficiency.  相似文献

We found that Br-/Br3- is more suitable than an I-/I3- couple in dye-sensitized solar cells in terms of higher open-circuit photovoltage (Voc) production and higher overall energy conversion efficiency (eta) if the dye sensitizer has a more positive potential than that of Br-/Br3-. Under simulated AM1.5 one sun, an eosin Y dye-sensitized solar cell containing 0.4 M LiBr + 0.04 M Br2 electrolyte in acetonitrile yielded a short-circuit photocurrent (Jsc) of 4.63 mA cm(-2), Voc of 0.813 V, and fill factor (FF) of 0.693, corresponding to 2.61% of eta. Under the same conditions except for the electrolyte 0.4 M LiI + 0.04 M I2 in acetonitrile instead, the device produced 1.67% of eta (Jsc = 5.15 mA cm(-2), Voc = 0.451 V, FF = 0.721). Replacement of I-/I3- with Br-/Br3- in eosin Y dye-sensitized solar cells yielded a significant increase in Voc offset by slight decreases in Jsc and FF, leading to an increase in eta by 56%. The significant gain in Voc was attributed to the enlarged energy level difference between the redox potential of the electrolyte and the Fermi level of TiO2 and the suppressed charge recombination as well. The rate for charge recombination between bromine and the injected electrons was determined to be first order in bromine.  相似文献
