A model is proposed that treats electrons at surfaces as a combination of two-dimensional and three-dimensional degrees of freedom. This yields a simple formula for the surface state induced resonant enhancement of the transfer of electrons through a surface. The model also yields analytic approximations for the transition between two-dimensional and three-dimensional distance laws in the correlations between electrons in surface states. We analyze the quantum fluctuations of the degenerate optical parametric oscillator close to an instability for the formation of a square pattern. While strong correlations between the fluctuations of the signal modes emitted at the critical wave number and with opposite wave vector are present both below and above threshold, no features signaling the square character of the pattern forming above threshold have been identified below threshold in the spatio-temporal second-order coherence. We also explore in which regimes a reduced few mode model gives meaningful results. Received 17 September 2002 / Received in final form 11 November 2002 Published online 26 February 2003  相似文献

We study the non-equilibrium time evolution of the average transverse magnetisation and end-to-end correlation functions of the random Ising quantum chain. Starting with fully magnetised states, either in the x or z direction, we compute numerically the average quantities. They show similar behaviour to the homogeneous chain, that is an algebraic decay in time toward a stationary state. During the time evolution, the spatial correlations, measured from one end to the other of the chain, are building up and finally at long time they reach a size-dependent constant depending on the distance from criticality. Analytical arguments are given which support the numerical results. Received 11 July 2002 / Received in final form 9 September 2002 Published online 29 October 2002  相似文献

We study the dynamics of a growing crystalline facet where the growth mechanism is controlled by the geometry of the local curvature. A continuum model, in (2+1) dimensions, is developed in analogy with the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) model is considered for the purpose. Following standard coarse graining procedures, it is shown that in the large time, long distance limit, the continuum model predicts a curvature independent KPZ phase, thereby suppressing all explicit effects of curvature and local pinning in the system, in the “perturbative” limit. A direct numerical integration of this growth equation, in 1+1 dimensions, supports this observation below a critical parametric range, above which generic instabilities, in the form of isolated pillared structures lead to deviations from standard scaling behaviour. Possibilities of controlling this instability by introducing statistically “irrelevant" (in the sense of renormalisation groups) higher ordered nonlinearities have also been discussed. The interaction between two disks immersed in a 2D nematic is investigated i) analytically using the tensor order parameter formalism for the nematic configuration around isolated disks and ii) numerically using finite-element methods with adaptive meshing to minimize the corresponding Landau-de Gennes free energy. For strong homeotropic anchoring, each disk generates a pair of defects with one-half topological charge responsible for the 2D quadrupolar interaction between the disks at large distances. At short distance, the position of the defects may change, leading to unexpected complex interactions with the quadrupolar repulsive interactions becoming attractive. This short-range attraction in all directions is still anisotropic. As the distance between the disks decreases, their preferred relative orientation with respect to the far-field nematic director changes from oblique to perpendicular. We study the breaking of parity symmetry in the 2+1 Gross-Neveu model at finite temperature with chemical potential μ, in the presence of an external magnetic field. We find that the requirement of gauge invariance, which is considered mandatory in the presence of gauge fields, breaks parity at any finite temperature and provides for dynamical mass generation, preventing symmetry restoration for any non-vanishing μ. The dynamical mass becomes negligibly small as temperature is raised. Frequency-resolved optical gating is used to measure non-linear ultra-short pulse propagation in air over a distance of up to 4.35 m. During spatial collapse of the pulse, both pulse steepening and asymmetric pulse splitting are observed to occur at a power level of about 14 GW and at a propagation distance less than the diffraction length. Inclusions embedded in lipid membranes undergo a mediated force, due to the tendency of the membrane to relax its excess of elastic energy. In this paper we determine the exact shape of a two-dimensional vesicle hosting two different inclusions, and we analyse how the inclusion conformation influences the mediated interaction. We find non-trivial equilibrium configurations for the inclusions along the hosting membrane, and we derive the complete phase diagram of the mediated interaction. In particular, we find a non-vanishing mediated force even when the distance between the inclusions is much greater than their size. Our model can be applied to describe the mediated interactions of parallel, elongated inclusions embedded in three-dimensional membranes. We use time-dependent density functional theory coupled to molecular dynamics for ionic motion to compute the spectra of ionic vibrations in small Na clusters. Comparison with results from the distance dependent tight-binding approach shows good agreement between these two very different methods. We discuss the evolution of the spectra with cluster size and charge and the impact of ionic vibrations on the optical response. We study an analytically tractable model with long-range interactions for which an out-of-equilibrium very long-lived coherent structure spontaneously appears. The dynamics of this model is indeed very peculiar: a bicluster forms at low energy and is stable for very long time, contrary to statistical mechanics predictions. We first explain the onset of the structure, by approximating the short time dynamics with a forced Burgers equation. The emergence of the bicluster is the signature of the shock waves present in the associated hydrodynamical equations. The striking quantitative agreement with the dynamics of the particles fully confirms this procedure. We then show that a very fast timescale can be singled out from a slower motion. This enables us to use an adiabatic approximation to derive an effective Hamiltonian that describes very well the long time dynamics. We then get an explanation of the very long time stability of the bicluster: this out-of-equilibrium state corresponds to a statistical equilibrium of an effective mean-field dynamics. A feedback mechanism that involves the proteins p53 and mdm2, induces cell death as a controlled response to severe DNA damage. A minimal model for this mechanism demonstrates that the response may be dynamic and connected with the time needed to translate the mdm2 protein. The response takes place if the dissociation constant k between p53 and mdm2 varies from its normal value. Although it is widely believed that it is an increase in k that triggers the response, we show that the experimental behaviour is better described by a decrease in the dissociation constant. The response is quite robust upon changes in the parameters of the system, as required by any control mechanism, except for few weak points, which could be connected with the onset of cancer. The stabilization method is applied to the case of interacting resonances in the photo-dissociation of van der Waals clusters composed by a rare gas atom bound to a dihalogen molecule. The study of an illustrative two-dimensional model consisting in a T-shaped NeI2 molecule shows the adequacy of the method whenever the projection of the stabilization wave functions on the assumed prepared initial state is accounted for. The agreement of the fragmentation cross-sections with some previous results using the effective resolvent method and accurate close-coupling calculations is excellent. The method reveals its utility as a complementary tool since allows, through the analysis of the stabilization wave function in terms of zero-order levels, a precise characterization of the resonant states involved. We study the effect of electrostatic interactions on the distribution function of the end-to-end distance of a single polyelectrolyte chain in the rod-like limit. The extent to which the radial distribution function of a polyelectrolyte is reproduced by that of a wormlike chain with an adjusted effective persistence length is investigated. Strong evidence is found for a universal scaling formula connecting the effective persistence length of a polyelectrolyte with the strength of the electrostatic interaction and the Debye screening length. Motivated by recent experiments on cuprates with low-dimensional magnetic interactions, a new class of two-dimensional Ising models with short-range interactions and mobile defects is introduced and studied. The non-magnetic defects form lines, which, as temperature increases, first meander and then become unstable. Using Monte Carlo simulations and analytical low- and high-temperature considerations, the instability of the defect stripes is monitored for various microscopic and thermodynamic quantities in detail for a minimal model, assuming some of the couplings to be indefinitely strong. The robustness of the findings against weakening the interactions is discussed as well. Received 22 August 2002 / Received in final form 4 October 2002 Published online 19 November 2002  相似文献

We give a detailed picture of the mesoscopic conductance fluctuations in the deep insulating regime (DIR) within the Nguyen, Spivak and Shklovskii model in the unitary and symplectic ensembles. Slutski's theorem is invoked to rigorously state the ergodic problem for conductance fluctuations in the DIR, in contrast with previous studies. A weakly decaying behavior of the log-conductance correlation function, even weaker when spin-orbit scatterers are included, is established on the relevant field scale of the model. Such a slow decay implies that the stochastic process, defined by the fluctuations of the log-conductance, is non-ergodic in the mean square sense in the ensembles with the reported symmetries. The results can be interpreted in terms of the effective number of samples within the available magnetic scale. Using the replica approach, we derive the strong localisation counterparts of the well known 'cooperon' and 'diffuson' which permit analyzing quantitatively the decaying behavior of the correlation function and reveal its symmetry related properties in agreement with the numerical results. We study the force-induced unfolding of random disordered RNA or single-stranded DNA polymers. The system undergoes a second-order phase transition from a collapsed globular phase at low forces to an extensive necklace phase with a macroscopic end-to-end distance at high forces. At low temperatures, the sequence inhomogeneities modify the critical behaviour. We provide numerical evidence for the universality of the critical exponents which, by extrapolation of the scaling laws to zero force, contain useful information on the ground-state (f = 0) properties. This provides a good method for quantitative studies of scaling exponents characterizing the collapsed globule. In order to get rid of the blurring effect of thermal fluctuations, we restrict ourselves to the ground state at fixed external force. We analyze the statistics of rearrangements, in particular below the critical force, and point out its implications for force-extension experiments on single molecules. We investigate random walks on a lattice with imperfect traps. In one dimension, we perturbatively compute the survival probability by reducing the problem to a particle diffusing on a closed ring containing just one single trap. Numerical simulations reveal this solution, which is exact in the limit of perfect traps, to be remarkably robust with respect to a significant lowering of the trapping probability. We demonstrate that for randomly distributed traps, the long-time asymptotics of our result recovers the known stretched exponential decay. We also study an anisotropic three-dimensional version of our model. We discuss possible applications of some of our findings to the decay of excitons in semiconducting organic polymer materials, and emphasize the crucial influence of the spatial trap distribution on the kinetics. To illustrate complex spatio-temporal effects which are possible in cellular reactions with a small number of particles, we present Monte Carlo simulations of the formation of oscillatory spark-like patterns in a model completely stochastic Ca+2 oscillator. Our analysis shows that in order to observe such patterns the minimum average number of Ca+2 ions in the cytosol may be as low as about 50. We study the low-velocity (0.1-100 μm s-1) frictional properties of interfaces between a rough glassy polymer and smooth silanized glass, a configuration which gives direct access to the rheology of the adhesive joints in which shear localizes. We show that these joints exhibit the full phenomenology expected for confined quasi-2D soft glasses: they strengthen logarithmically when aging at rest, and weaken (rejuvenate) when sliding. Rejuvenation is found to saturate at large velocities. Moreover, aging at rest is shown to be strongly accelerated when waiting under finite stress below the static threshold.
