The surface composition and morphology of Fe(111) have been examined through a combined analysis that includes low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The preferential segregation of sulfur has been clearly identified by AES upon annealing. The STM images exhibit numerous triangular pits of various sizes, and the LEED patterns show diffused n × 1 spots. The triangular pits reveal a Sierpinski gasket fractal. For sulfur-free Fe(111), nitrogen segregates to the surface upon annealing, forming a 4√3 × 4√3 superstructure that is identified by LEED patterns and STM images. The STM images show nanoscale triangular clusters regularly aligned in a hexagonal 4√3 × 4√3 configuration. Ultra-thin chromium film deposited on a nitrogen-segregated Fe(111) surface with post-annealing induces further nitrogen segregation, resulting in the formation of triangular pyramid-shaped CrN nanoclusters.  相似文献

The surface structure of Ni2P (101?0), a model for highly active hydrodesulfurization catalysts, was studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) in order to understand the reconstruction of the surface layers. Annealing at 573 K revealed a (1 × 1) LEED pattern which changed to a c(2 × 4) arrangement by further heating to 723 K. Atomic scale STM images were obtained for both the (1 × 1) and c(2 × 4) structures. Bright spots observed in the STM images were interpreted to be due to surface phosphorus atoms and this was supported by a density functional theory (DFT) simulation. Several possible models for the c(2 × 4) reconstructed structures were proposed including a P-dimer defect model, a missing-row model and a missing-row + added-row model. The last model gave the best explanation for the c(2 × 4)structure. The mechanism for the c(2 × 4) reconstruction on the Ni2P (101?0) surface is discussed.  相似文献

The formation of Mg-induced quasi-one-dimensional atomic wires on a Si(557) surface was studied by low energy electron diffraction (LEED), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and first-principles calculations. The atomic wires were produced on the Si(557) surface without faceting when heated to 330 ?C. The atomic wires had a × 5 period along the wires, as observed by LEED. STM images showed the existence of three kinds of atomic wires in a unit cell: an atomic wire located at the step edge and the others on the terrace. Interestingly, alternative double and triple modulations resulting in the × 5 period was observed at the atomic wire located at the step edge. Among the variety of atomic structure models available, the one based on a honeycomb-chain-channel model, which is that of a metal/Si(111)-(3 × 1) surface, reproduced the STM images well and was relatively stable energetically.  相似文献

The atomic arrangement of submonolayer Bi films on Rh(111) surface was examined using low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). With low coverage, the LEED patterns showed incommensurate (IC) spots. The unit cell of IC was close to c(2 × 4) and had twofold symmetry. As the coverage increased, the unit cell shrank continuously along the [1¯10] direction, and the commensurate c(2 × 4) was formed at a coverage of 0.5 ML. At the coverage above 0.5 ML, two different structures of c(2 × 4) and (4 × 4) were observed by STM. When the surface is fully saturated by monolayer Bi atoms, Bi atoms formed the uniform (4 × 4) structure with sixfold symmetry. This is due to a strong Bi–Rh attractive interaction resulting in the two-dimensional localization of Bi adsorbates on the surface. As a result, a symmetrical transition of Bi films from twofold to sixfold symmetry occurred on Rh(111).  相似文献

The oxidation of W(110) was studied over a temperature a range of 1000 K to 1600 K at 1 × 10? 6 Torr oxygen. The subsequent oxide structure was then characterized using Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM). It was found that the resulting structure was remarkably similar to that of Mo(110) oxidized under similar conditions. Using the Mo(110) oxide structure as our basis, along with atomic resolution STM images, we have constructed a model for the surface oxide of W(110).  相似文献

The oxidation of Fe(111) was studied using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ion scattering spectroscopy (ISS) and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). Oxidation of the crystal was found to be a very fast process, even at 200 K, and the Auger O signal saturation level is reached within ~ 50 × 10? 6 mbar s. Annealing the oxidised surface at 773 K causes a significant decline in apparent surface oxygen concentration and produces a clear (6 × 6) LEED pattern, whereas after oxidation at ambient temperature no pattern was observed. STM results indicate that the oxygen signal was reduced due to the nucleation of large, but sparsely distributed oxide islands, leaving mainly the smooth (6 × 6) structure between the islands. The reactivity of the (6 × 6) layer towards methanol was investigated using temperature programmed desorption (TPD), which showed mainly decomposition to CO and CO2, due to the production of formate intermediates on the surface. Interestingly, this removes the (6 × 6) structure by reduction, but it can be reformed from the sink of oxygen present in the large oxide islands simply by annealing at 773 K for a few minutes. The (6 × 6) appears to be a relatively stable, pseudo-oxide phase, that may be useful as a model oxide surface.  相似文献

The growth of ultrathin films of Y2O3(111) on Pt(111) has been studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). The films were grown by physical vapor deposition of yttrium in a 10? 6 Torr oxygen atmosphere. Continuous Y2O3(111) films were obtained by post-growth annealing at 700 °C. LEED and STM indicate an ordered film with a bulk-truncated Y2O3(111)–1 × 1 structure exposed. Furthermore, despite the lattices of the substrate and the oxide film being incommensurate, the two lattices exhibit a strict in-plane orientation relationship with the [11?0] directions of the two cubic lattices aligning parallel to each other. XPS measurements suggest hydroxyls to be easily formed at the Y2O3 surface at room temperature even under ultra high vacuum conditions. The hydrogen desorbs from the yttria surface above ~ 200 °C.  相似文献

Structures of monolayer nickel nitride (NiN) on Cu(0 0 1) surface are studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Formations of Ni–N chemical bonds and NiN monolayer at the surface are confirmed by XPS on the N-adsorbed Cu(0 0 1) surfaces after Ni deposition and subsequent annealing to 670 K. A c(2 × 2) structure is always observed in the LEED patterns, which is a quite contrast to the (2 × 2)p4g structure observed usually at the N-adsorbed Ni(0 0 1) surface. Atomic images by STM indicate the mixture of Ni–N and Cu–N structures at the surface. Density of the trenches on the N-saturated surface decreases and the grid pattern on partially N-covered surfaces becomes disordered with increasing the Ni coverage. These results are attributed to the decrease of the surface compressive stress at the N-adsorbed Cu surface by mixing Ni atoms.  相似文献

Tin (Sn) induced (1 × 2) reconstructions on GaAs(100) and InAs(100) substrates have been studied by low energy electron diffraction (LEED), photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) and ab initio calculations. The comparison of measured and calculated STM images and surface core-level shifts shows that these surfaces can be well described with the energetically stable building blocks that consist of Sn–III dimers. Furthermore, a new Sn-induced (1 × 4) reconstruction was found. In this reconstruction the occupied dangling bonds are closer to each other than in the more symmetric (1 × 2) reconstruction, and it is shown that the (1 × 4) reconstruction is stabilized as the adatom size increases.  相似文献

The atomic structure of sub-monolayer amounts of Ti deposited on the Al(001) surface at room temperature has been investigated using low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and low-energy ion scattering spectroscopy (LEIS). The Ti coverage was determined using Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS). Though a crisp LEED image is inherently difficult to obtain, the symmetry of the observed c(2 × 2) LEED images allows us to infer a structure which places Ti atoms in every other Al lattice site. Analysis of the LEIS azimuth- and polar-angle scan spectra has been done to determine the best structural model which supports the c(2 × 2) symmetry of the LEED image as well as LEIS experimental data. It was concluded that the best model consistent with the experimental data, puts Ti preferentially below the surface of the Al substrate at every other lattice site for sub-monolayer coverage of Ti on Al(001). As Ti coverage increases, the presence if Ti atoms in the surface layer also increases. Results of this study are relevant to research pertaining to the possible use of Ti as a catalyst in sodium alanate (NaAlH4) in hydrogen storage applications.  相似文献

Mixed Fe–Mo oxides are used in industrial catalytic processes of selective oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde. For better understanding of the structure-reactivity relationships of these catalysts we aim to prepare well-ordered iron–molybdate thin films as model catalysts. Here we have studied Mo deposition onto Fe3O4 (111) thin films produced on Pt(111) as a function of Mo coverage and annealing temperature using LEED, AES, STM and IRAS. At low temperatures, the iron oxide film is covered by Mo = O terminated molybdena nanoparticles. Upon oxidation at elevated temperatures (T > 900 K), Mo species migrate into the film and form new bonds with oxygen in the film. The resulting films maintain the crystal structure of Fe3O4, and the surface undergoes a (√3 × √3)R30° reconstruction. The structure is rationalized in terms of Fe substitution by Mo in the surface layers.  相似文献

Titanium oxide films grown on Mo(100) have been investigated by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (PES). The film was grown by Ti deposition on Mo(100) and subsequent oxidation of the film by 12 L of O2 exposure at room temperature. As the film was annealed at 700–1000 °C, the film in which the Ti atoms were in a Ti3+ oxidation state was formed. As the film was annealed at 1100–1500 °C, the oxidation state of Ti in the film was converted to Ti2+. The valence electronic structure of the film was measured under the condition that the emission from the Mo substrate was minimized due to a Cooper minimum of the Mo 4 d photoionization cross sections (hν = 100 eV). It was found that the Ti 3 d band in normal-emission spectra was increased in intensity when the film was annealed at 1100–1500 °C. As the film was annealed at 1300 °C for 10 s and 20 s, the film-covered Mo(100) gave (2 × 2) and (4 × 1) LEED patterns, respectively. The two-dimensional band structure of the (2 × 2) system was investigated by angle-resolved PES, and it was found that the film with a (1 × 1) periodicity with respect to the Mo(100) substrate existed in the (2 × 2) system.  相似文献

Since more than twenty years it is known that deposition of Ag onto Si(111)–(7 × 7) leads under certain conditions to the formation of so-called “ring-like” clusters, that are particularly stable among small clusters. In order to resolve their still unknown atomic structure, we performed voltage dependent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements providing interesting information about the electronic properties of clusters which are linked with their atomic structure. Based on a structural model of Au cluster on Si(111)–(7 × 7) and our STM images, we propose an atomic arrangement for the two most stable Ag “ring-like” clusters.  相似文献

Surface mass transport of In film on vicinal Si(0 0 1) has been systematically investigated by a scanning Auger electron microscopy (SAM), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was observed that the temperature dependence of the mass transport shows the critical phenomenon. Above a critical temperature Tc, surface electromigration of the In film toward the cathode side dominated the surface mass transport on the vicinal Si(0 0 1) surface. The LEED and AFM observations revealed that the In film surface on the vicinal Si(0 0 1) consists of 3×4 terraces and (3 1 0) facets. The area ratio of the facet to the terrace exhibited abrupt an increase at Tc. It is believed that the change of the mass transport is related to the abrupt change of the area ratio of the facet to the terrace. Both the critical temperature Tc and the spread due to the surface electromigration of the In film depended on the configuration of the DC current direction and the step edge.  相似文献

We have investigated the structure and morphology of the InAs(1 1 1)B surface using Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED), Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The surface was prepared by annealing in the presence of an arsenic or atomic hydrogen pressure. A (2 × 2) reconstruction that changes into a (1 × 1) unreconstructed surface after prolonged annealing was observed irrespective of preparation method, while the surface morphology was distinctly different in the two cases. Detailed atomic scale models are proposed to explain the behavior. Deposition of Au aerosol nanoparticles on the sample prior to annealing was found to have no effect on the surface reconstruction. The Au particles were found to sink into the surface.  相似文献

Chlorine adsorption on Ru(0001) surface has been studied by a combined density functional theory (DFT) and quantitative low energy electron diffraction (LEED) approach. The (√3 × √3)R30°-Cl phase with ΘCl = 1/3 ML and chlorine sitting in fcc sites has been identified by DFT calculations as the most stable chlorine adsorbate structure on Ru(0001) with an adsorption energy of ? 220 kJ/mol. The atomic geometry of (√3 × √3)R30°-Cl was determined by quantitative LEED. The achieved agreement between experimental and simulated LEED data is quantified by a Pendry factor of rP = 0.19 for a fcc adsorption site with a Cl-Ru bond length of 2.52 Å. At chlorine coverages beyond 1/3 ML LEED reveals diffuse diffraction rings, indicating a continuous compression of the hexagonal Cl overlayer with a preferred average Cl–Cl distance of 4.7 Å in the (√3 × √3)R30°-Cl, ΘCl = 1/3 ML phase towards 3.9 Å at saturation coverage of 0.48 ML.  相似文献

We studied the atomic arrangements and the phase diagram of two-dimensional (2D) Bi–Sn binary films on Rh(111) with low-energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The 2D binary films exhibited (“2” × √3)-(Bi,Sn), (√7 × √7)R19°-(Bi,Sn), and (7 × 3√3)-(Bi,Sn) structures, depending on the compositional ratio of Bi and Sn. Atomically resolved STM images revealed that the binary films formed a BiSn3 ordered alloy for the (√7 × √7)R19°-(Bi,Sn) structure and a solid solution alloy for the (“2” × √3)-(Bi,Sn) structure. The atomic configuration for the (7 × 3√3)-(Bi,Sn) structure was closely related to that of (√7 × √7) R19°-(Bi,Sn).  相似文献

Atomic scale images and low energy electron diffraction pattern of a MoO2(100) single crystal surface are presented, which show different structural modifications depending on surface preparation. A short in-situ heat treatment of the as-grown single crystal results in an atomically ordered surface whose diffraction pattern and STM images are consistent with those expected from the bulk structure. The symmetry of the STM images suggests an oxygen termination of the surface. A significantly longer heat treatment causes a thermodynamically stable (4 × 1) reconstruction which is interpreted to be due to a loss of oxygen chains. The (4 × 1) reconstruction vanishes after Ar-ion-sputtering and subsequent annealing. Additional long sputtering cycles result in a (2 × 1) reconstruction. The observed surface reconstructions can be transformed into each other by heating or sputtering cycles.  相似文献

The surface structure of γ-Fe2O3(111) has been investigated with a range of surface techniques. Two different surface structures were discovered depending upon surface preparation techniques. Sputtering followed by annealing in vacuum produced a reduced surface characterised by a (2 × 2) LEED pattern, whereas sputtering followed by annealing in 1 × 10? 6 mbar oxygen produced a surface characterised by a (√3 × √3)-R30° LEED pattern. The latter appears to be a very low conductivity surface, whereas the former has the band gap expected for maghemite (~ 2.0 eV). We propose that the reduced surface is a magnetite-like layer, whereas the oxidised surface is an Fe2O3-like layer.  相似文献

The interaction of atomic H with Ag(1 1 1)/Si(1 1 1)7 × 7 surfaces was studied by thermal desorption (TD) spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at room temperature. TD spectroscopy revealed an intense peak from mono H–Si bonds, even though the Si surface was covered by the Ag atoms. This peak was not observed from Ag-coated SiO2/Si substrates. STM observation showed no clear change of the Ag surface morphology resulting from H exposure. All these results indicate that the atomic H adsorbs at neither the Ag surfaces nor Ag bulk sites, but at the Ag/Si interface by diffusing through the Ag film.  相似文献
