The nonaqueous dispersion polymerization of styrene in methanol with poly[(4‐methylstyrene)‐co‐(4‐vinyltriethylbenzyl ammonium bromide)]‐b‐polyisobutene as a stabilizer was investigated. There was no observable inducing period or autoacceleration in the polymerization process. The conversion increased almost linearly with the polymerization time as high as 80%. The average sizes of the obtained polystyrene particles increased, and the size distributions of the polystyrene particles tended to become narrower, with increasing conversion. The mechanism of the dispersion polymerization in the presence of polyisobutene‐b‐poly[(4‐methylstyrene)‐co‐(4‐vinyltriethylbenzyl ammonium bromide)] was nucleation/growth. When the stabilizer/monomer ratio (w/w) was greater than 2.0%, the polystyrene dispersion was stable, and there was no observable polymer particle coagulation taking place during the whole polymerization process. The average diameter of the polymer particles can be mediated through changes in the polymerization conversion, monomer, and stabilizer. Nearly monodispersed polystyrene particles with average diameters of approximately 0.45–2.21 μm were obtained under optimal conditions. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate‐coN,O‐dimethacryloylhydroxylamine) particles were prepared by dispersion polymerization in toluene/2‐methylpropan‐1‐ol medium using cellulose acetate butyrate and dibenzoyl peroxide (BPO) as a steric stabilizer and initiator, respectively. The particle size was reduced with decreasing solvency of the reaction medium (more nuclei were generated) because the critical chain length of the precipitated oligomers decreased with an increasing toluene content, which is a poorer solvent for the polymer than 2‐methylpropan‐1‐ol. There is an optimum initiator concentration (2 wt % BPO relative to monomers) for producing low‐polydispersity particles under given conditions. Additionally, discrete spherical particles were obtained at a low monomer concentration and/or higher polymerization temperature. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Monodisperse polystyrene particles crosslinked with different concentrations of divinylbenzene were synthesized in the 3.2–9.1 μm size range by dispersion polymerization in an isopropyl alcohol/toluene mixed‐dispersion medium with poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone) as a steric stabilizer and 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile as a radical initiator. The effects of the reaction parameters such as the crosslinking agent concentration, media solvency (controlled by varying the amount of toluene addition), the initiator concentration, and the stabilizer concentration on the particle size and size distribution were investigated with reference particles with a monodisperse size distribution and crosslinked by 1.5 wt % divinylbenzene. The appropriate increase in media solvency was a prerequisite for preparing crosslinked particles without coagulated and/or odd‐shaped particles. The investigation of the effects of the polymerization parameters also shows that only specific sets of conditions produce particles with a monodisperse size distribution. The glass‐transition temperatures of the particles increased with increasing divinylbenzene concentration. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 4368–4377, 2002  相似文献

Nonporous hydrogel microspheres 0.1–1.3 μm in diameter were prepared by the dispersion copolymerization of 1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone and ethylene dimethacrylate as a crosslinking agent. The crosslinking was evidenced by solid state 13C NMR and elemental analysis. The effect of various parameters including selection of solvent (cyclohexane, butyl acetate), initiator (4,4′‐azobis(4‐cyanopentanoic acid), 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile, dibenzoyl peroxide) and stabilizer on the properties of resulting microspheres has been studied. Dynamic light scattering and photographic examination were used for determination of the diameter and polydispersity of microspheres. Increasing concentration of steric stabilizer in the initial polymerization mixture decreased the particle size. The particle size depended on the molecular weight of polystyrene‐block‐hydrogenated polyisoprene stabilizer, but not on the number of PS and polybutadiene blocks in the styrene–butadiene block copolymer stabilizers. Dibenzoyl peroxide used as an initiator resulted in agglomeration of particles. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 653–663, 2000  相似文献

Herein we report a successful dispersion polymerization of 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in a carbon dioxide continuous phase with a block copolymer consisting of polystyrene and poly(1,1‐dihydroperfluorooctyl acrylate) as a stabilizer. Poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) was effectively emulsified in carbon dioxide with the amphiphilic diblock copolymer surfactant, and the successful stabilization of the polymerization simultaneously gave spherical particles in the submicrometer range with relatively narrow particle size distributions. The initial concentrations of HEMA and the stabilizer and the pressure had substantial effects on the size of the colloidal particles. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Photoinitiated dispersion polymerization of methyl methacrylate was carried out in a mixture of ethanol and water as dispersion medium in the presence of poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) as the steric stabilizer and Darocur 1173 as photoinitiator. 93.7% of conversion was achieved within 30 min of UV irradiation at room temperature, and microspheres with 0.94 μm number–average diameter and 1.04 polydispersity index (PDI) were obtained. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS) analysis revealed that only parts of surface of the microspheres were covered by PVP. The particle size decreased from 2.34 to 0.98 μm as the concentration of PVP stabilizer increased from 2 to 15%. Extra stabilizer (higher than 15%) has no effect on the particle size and distribution. Increasing medium polarity or decreasing monomer and photoinitiator concentration resulted in a decrease in the particle size. Solvency of reaction medium toward stabilizer, which affects the adsorption of stabilizer on the particle surface, was shown to be crucial for controlling particle size and uniformity because of the high reaction rate in photoinitiated dispersion polymerization. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Micron‐sized monodisperse poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) particles, poly([2‐(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide), were prepared by dispersion polymerization at 70 °C in methanol with poly(vinylpyrrolidone) as a stabilizer. The obtained particle size could be controlled by addition of ethanol to the methanol medium while maintaining narrow monodispersity. The PIL particles exhibit unique properties; they can be observed by scanning electron microscopy without platinum coating, which is generally used to avoid an electron charge. Moreover, the solubility of the PIL particles can be easily changed by changing the counter anion, similar to the process for ionic liquids.  相似文献

Fine magnetite nanoparticles, both electrostatically stabilized and nonstabilized, were synthesized in situ by precipitation of Fe(II) and Fe(III) salts in alkaline medium. Magnetic poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) microspheres with core‐shell structure, where Fe3O4 is the magnetic core and PGMA is the shell, were obtained by dispersion polymerization initiated with 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN), 4,4′‐azobis(4‐cyanovaleric acid) (ACVA), or ammonium persulfate (APS) in ethanol containing poly(vinylpyrrolidone) or ethylcellulose stabilizer in the presence of iron oxide ferrofluid. The average microsphere size ranged from 100 nm to 2 μm. The effects of the nature of ferrofluid, polymerization temperature, monomer, initiator, and stabilizer concentration on the PGMA particle size and polydispersity were studied. The particles contained 2–24 wt % of iron. AIBN produced larger microspheres than APS or ACVA. Polymers encapsulating electrostatically stabilized iron oxide particles contained lower amounts of oxirane groups compared with those obtained with untreated ferrofluid. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Crosslinked poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate)‐based magnetic microspheres were prepared in a simple one‐step procedure by dispersion polymerization in the presence of several kinds of iron oxides. Cellulose acetate butyrate and dibenzoyl peroxide were used as steric stabilizer and polymerization initiator, respectively, and ethylene dimethacrylate was a crosslinking agent. The resulting product was characterized in terms of particle size, particle size distribution, iron(III) content, and magnetic properties. In the presence of needle‐like maghemite in the polymerization mixture and under suitable conditions, magnetic microspheres with relatively narrow size distribution were formed. An increase in the particle size and, at the same time, a decrease in molecular weight of uncrosslinked polymers resulted, as the continuous phase became richer in 2‐methylpropan‐1‐ol. Coercive force of needle‐like maghemite‐containing particles was higher than that of cubic magnetite‐loaded microspheres. Coercive force increased with the decreasing iron content in the particles. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 1161–1171, 2000  相似文献

Poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm)‐based microspheres were prepared by precipitation and dispersion polymerization. The effects of several reaction parameters, such as the type and concentration of the crosslinker (N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide or ethylene dimethacrylate), medium polarity, concentration of the monomer and initiator, and polymerization temperature, on the properties were examined. The hydrogel microspheres were characterized in terms of their chemical structure, size and size distribution, and morphological and temperature‐induced swelling properties. A decrease in the particle size was observed with increasing polarity of the reaction medium or increasing concentration of poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone) as a stabilizer in the dispersion polymerization. The higher the content was of the crosslinking agent, the lower the swelling ratio was. Too much crosslinker gave unstable dispersions. Although the solvency of the precipitation polymerization mixture controlled the PNIPAAm microsphere size in the range of 0.2–1 μm, a micrometer range was obtained in the Shellvis 50 and Kraton G 1650 stabilized dispersion polymerizations of N‐isopropylacrylamide in toluene/heptane. Typically, the particles had fairly narrow size distributions. Copolymerization with the functional glycidyl methacrylate monomer afforded microspheres with reactive oxirane groups. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Direct synthesis of charged hybrid particles in non‐polar media has not been widely described in the literature but can lead to many applications such as electrophoretic displays. In this work, we propose a way to synthesize charged hybrid particles within the electrophoretic medium (Toluene or Isopar G) in the presence or not of additives (Charge Control Agent, CCA). The particles synthesis was performed by Nitroxide‐mediated Radical Polymerization (NMRP) via dispersion polymerization in aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents leading to stable chargeable particles with a good size control. Hybrid particles are successfully charged by reaction with functional monomers or addition of CCA to obtain electrophoretic particles. The performance of a dual‐color red/white ink in a display was demonstrated with a test‐cell. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2017 , 55, 338–348  相似文献

Poly(glycidyl methacrylate) [poly(GMA)] microspheres of narrow size distribution were prepared in a simple one‐step procedure by dispersion radical polymerization. Depending on the solvent used, poly(GMA) particle size could be controlled in the range of 0.5–4 μm by changing the solubility parameter of the reaction mixture. In N,N′‐dimethylformamide (DMF)/methanol mixture, the particle size increased and the size distribution broadened with decreasing initial solubility parameter. While in the DMF/methanol solvent system, hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) or cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) were taken as steric stabilizers of the dispersion polymerization, poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) was used in alcoholic media. Contrary to the DMF/methanol system, narrow particle size distributions were obtained with PVP‐stabilized polymerizations in ethanolic, methanolic, propan‐1‐olic or butan‐1‐olic medium. Both the particle size and polydispersity were reduced with increasing stabilizer concentration. If lower molecular‐weight PVP was used, larger microspheres were obtained. Poly(GMA) samples prepared in a neat alcoholic medium virtually quantitatively retained oxirane group content after the polymerization. Reactivity of the poly(GMA) microspheres was confirmed by their hydrolysis and aminolysis. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 3855–3863, 2000  相似文献

A series of random copolymers, composed of 1H,1H‐perfluorooctyl methacrylate (FOMA) and 2‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) were prepared as stabilizers for the dispersion polymerization of methyl methacrylate in supercritical CO2 (scCO2). Free‐flowing, spherical poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles were produced in high yield by the effective stabilization of poly(FOMA‐co‐DMAEMA) containing 34–67 w/w % (15–41 m/m %) FOMA structural units. Less stabilized but micron‐sized discrete particles could be obtained even with 25 w/w % (10 m/m %) FOMA stabilizer. The result showed that the composition of copolymeric stabilizers had a dramatic effect on the size and morphology of PMMA. The particle size was controllable with the surfactant concentration. The effect of the monomer concentration and the initial pressure on the polymerization was also investigated. The dry polymer powder obtained from dispersion polymerization could be redispersed to form stable aqueous latexes in an acidic buffered solution (pH = 2.1) by an electrostatic stabilization mechanism due to the ionization of DMAEMA units in the stabilizer. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We perform multiscale simulations based on the coupling of molecular dynamics and lattice‐Boltzmann (LB) method to study the electrohydrodynamics of a polyampholyte‐grafted spherical nanoparticle. The long‐range hydrodynamic interactions are modeled by coupling the movement of particles to a LB fluid. Our results indicate that the net‐neutral soft particle moves with a nonzero mobility under applied electric fields. We systematically explore the effects of different parameters, including the chain length, grafting density, electric field, and charge sequence, on the structures of the polymer layer and the electrophoretic mobility of the soft particle. It shows that the mobility of nanoparticles has remarkable dependence on these parameters. We find that the deformation of the polyampholyte chains and the ion distribution play dominant roles in modulating the electrokinetic behavior of the polyampholyte‐grafted particle. The enhancement or reduction in the accumulation of counterions around monomers can be attributed to the polymer layer structure and the conformational transition of the chains in the electric field. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel dispersion copolymerization of maleic anhydride (MAn) and vinyl acetate (VAc) without adding stabilizer is developed, which gives uniform copolymer microspheres with tunable sizes. Some principal factors affecting the microspheres, such as reaction time, monomer concentration and feed ratio, reaction media, and cosolvent, were investigated. It was found that the stabilizer‐free dispersion copolymerization of MAn and VAc is a rapid process, and the particle size grows in accordance with the evolution of polymerization. The chemical composition of the copolymer microspheres was characterized by FT‐IR and 13C NMR spectroscopies. Over a wide range of monomer concentrations, the microspheres can always be formed and stably dispersed, with uniform sizes ranging from 180 nm to 740 nm. The yield of copolymer microspheres reaches a maximum at 1:1 feed ratio of MAn to VAc, owing to the alternating copolymerization between the binary monomers by a known charge‐transfer‐complex mechanism. However, the diameter of microspheres drastically increases when MAn content is enhanced. Only some specific alkyl ester solvents, such as n‐butyl acetate, isobutyl acetate, n‐amyl acetate, are desirably fit for this unique stabilizer‐free dispersion polymerization. Furthermore, we found that when some acetone is added as a cosolvent, the copolymer microspheres can still be formed, with much larger diameters. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Oxidative polymerization of pyrrole has been studied using FeCl3 or (NH4)2S2O8 (APS) as oxidant, ethylhydroxyethylcellulose (EHEC) as a steric stabilizer and water or aqueous ethanol as the dispersion medium. Transmission electron micrographic images of the particles from the as-prepared dialysed dispersions in aqueous ethanol show small as well as large particles (about a decade larger) when FeCl3 is used as the oxidant but only large particles when APS is used as the oxidant. Small particles are not found when the dispersions are prepared in water, irrespective of the oxidant used. The particle size decreases with an increase in molecular weight of the stabilizer for the same stabilizer concentration. The minimum amount of stabilizer required to support dispersion polymerization decreases upon increasing the alcohol content of the medium. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this study, we report the preparation of phenolic beads (PB) via a novel dispersion polymerization of 2‐phenoxyethanol (PE) and formaldehyde, in which gum acacia powder (GAP), formic acid, and sulfuric acid are employed as the steric stabilizer, the reaction medium and the catalyst, respectively. The effects of a variety of reaction parameters, including the stabilizer concentration, the agitation rate, the polymerization temperature, the molar ratio of formaldehyde to 2‐phenoxyethanol (F/P) and the amount of sulfuric acid, on the particle size and size distribution (PDI) as well as particle morphology have been investigated. Particularly, phenolic beads of a size 565 µm as well as a narrow particle size distribution (PDI = 1.153) have been prepared under the following conditions: the stabilizer concentration 2.5%, the agitation rate 700 rpm, the polymerization temperature 60°C, the molar F/P ratio 3:1, and the amount of catalyst 8 ml. In addition, a mechanism for the particle formation in dispersion polymerization of PE and formaldehyde has also been proposed. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) particles in the micron size range were obtained by the dispersion polymerization. Cellulose acetate butyrate and dibenzoyl peroxide were used as steric stabilizer and initiator, respectively. The ultimate particle size could be adjusted by the selection of a suitable polymerization medium consisting of an alcohol added to toluene and by varying their relative amounts. The particle size increased with increasing solubility parameter of the mixture, i.e., by decreasing the toluene/2-methylpropan-1-ol, toluene/butan-2-ol, and toluene/3-methylbutan-1-ol ratio. The particle size decreased with increasing concentration of the stabilizer and/or initiator. At the same time, the particle size distribution became narrower. Particles prepared from polymerization mixtures purged with nitrogen before the start of polymerization were smaller, and of narrower distribution, than those prepared from nitrogen-non-purged mixtures. Equilibrium swelling of particles in toluene decreased with the decreasing content of toluene in the polymerization mixture. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. An ambient self‐curable latex (ASCL) was prepared via the blending of colloidal dispersions in water of a chloromethylstyrene‐functionalized copolymer and a tertiary‐amine‐functionalized copolymer. Upon casting and drying under ambient conditions, the ASCL could generate crosslinked continuous polymer films. The crosslinking occurred via the Menschutkin reaction (quaternization) between the two types of functional groups. Because this reaction was reversible at high temperatures, the films could be decrosslinked and hence were self‐curable. The prepared ASCL exhibited excellent colloidal and chemical stability during long‐term storage: no significant changes in the colloidal properties, such as the particle size, electrophoretic mobility, and crosslinking reactivity, were observed after 48 months of storage. The electrophoretic measurements indicated that the electrostatic repulsion between the negatively charged particles of the ASCL was responsible for the excellent stability. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(N,N‐diethylacrylamide)‐based microspheres were prepared by ammonium persulfate (APS)‐initiated and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP)‐stabilized dispersion polymerization. The effects of various polymerization parameters, including concentration of N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide (MBAAm) crosslinker, monomer, initiator, stabilizer and polymerization temperature on their properties were elucidated. The hydrogel microspheres were described in terms of their size and size distribution and morphological and temperature‐induced swelling properties. While scanning electron microscopy was used to characterize the morphology of the microspheres, the temperature sensitivity of the microspheres was demonstrated by dynamic light scattering. The hydrodynamic particle diameter decreased sharply as the temperature reached a critical temperature ~ 30 °C. A decrease in the particle size was observed with increasing concentration of both the APS initiator and the PVP stabilizer. The microspheres crosslinked with 2–15 wt % of MBAAm had a fairly narrow size distribution. It was found that the higher the content of the crosslinking agent, the lower the swelling ratio. High concentration of the crosslinker gave unstable dispersions. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 6263–6271, 2008  相似文献
