Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is attractive in understanding the excited-state chirality and developing advanced materials. Herein, we propose a chiral reticular self-assembly strategy to unite achiral AIEgens, chirality donors, and metal ions to fabricate optically pure AIEgen metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as efficient CPL materials. We have found that CPL activity of the single-crystal AIEgen MOF was generated by the framework-enabled strong emission from AIEgens and through-space chirality transfer from chirality donors to achiral AIEgens via metal-ion bridges. For the first time, a dual mechano-switched blue and red-shifted CPL activity was achieved via ultrasonication and grinding, which enabled the rotation or stacking change of AIEgen rotors with the intact homochiral framework. This work provided not only an insightful view of the aggregation induced emission (AIE) mechanism, but also an efficient and versatile strategy for the preparation of stimuli-responsive CPL materials.  相似文献

Chirality is important to chemistry, biology and optoelectronic materials. The study on chirality has lasted for more than 170 years since its discovery. Recently, chiral materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) have attracted increasing interest because of their fascinating photophysical properties. In this review, we discussed the recent development of chiral materials with AIE properties, including their molecular structures, self-assembly and functions. Generally, the most effective strategy to design a chiral AIE luminogen (AIEgen) is to attach a chiral scaffold to an AIE-active fluorophore through covalent bonds. Moreover, some propeller-like or shell-like AIEgens without chiral units exhibit latent chirality upon mirror image symmetry breaking. The chirality of achiral AIEgens can also be induced by some optically active molecules through non-covalent interactions. The introduction of an AIE unit into chiral materials can enhance the efficiency of their circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in the solid state and the dissymmetric factors of their helical architectures formed through self-assembly. Thus, highly efficient circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CPOLEDs) with AIE characteristics are developed and show great potential in 3D displays. Chiral AIEgens are also widely utilized as “turn on” sensors for rapid enantioselective determination of chiral reagents. It is anticipated that the present review can entice readers to realize the importance of chirality and attract much more chemists to contribute their efforts to chirality and AIE study.

This review highlights the recent development of chiral materials with aggregation-induced emission properties, including their molecular structures, self-assembly and functions.  相似文献

The design and fabrication of quantum dots (QDs) with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has been a great challenge in developing chiroptical materials. We herein propose an alternative to the use of chiral capping reagents on QDs for the fabrication of CPL‐active QDs that is based on the supramolecular self‐assembly of achiral QDs with chiral gelators. Full‐color‐tunable CPL‐active QDs were obtained by simple mixing or gelation of a chiral gelator and achiral 3‐mercaptopropionic acid capped QDs. In addition, the handedness of the CPL can be controlled by the supramolecular chirality of the gels. Moreover, QDs with circularly polarized white light emission were fabricated for the first time by tuning the blending ratio of colorful QDs in the gel. The chirality transfer in the co‐assembly of the achiral QDs with the gelator and the spacer effect of the capping reagents on the QD surface are also discussed. This work provides new insight into the design of functional chiroptical materials.  相似文献

Herein, chiral deep eutectic solvents (DES) are prepared by lauric acid as hydrogen bond donors (HBD) and chiral menthol as hydrogen bond acceptors (HBA). When achiral fluorescent molecules are dopedin the menthol-based chiral DES, they emit circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with handedness controlled by the molecular chirality (l or d ) of menthol. Remarkably, the strategy is universal and a series of achiral fluorescent molecules can be endowed with CPL activity, showing a full-color and white CPL upon appropriate mixing, which paves the way to prepare white CPL materials. Interestingly, CPL appears only in a certain temperature range in the DES. Variable-temperature spectra and other characterization methods reveal that the H-bond network in the chiral DES plays an important role in inducing CPL. This work unveils how the interior structure as well as the hydrogen-bond network of a chiral DES can transfer its chirality to achiral luminophores for the first time and realizes a full-color and white CPL in a DES.  相似文献

Bioorthogonal turn‐on probes have been widely utilized in visualizing various biological processes. Most of the currently available bioorthogonal turn‐on probes are blue or green emissive fluorophores with azide or tetrazine as functional groups. Herein, we present an alternative strategy of designing bioorthogonal turn‐on probes based on red‐emissive fluorogens with aggregation‐induced emission characteristics (AIEgens). The probe is water soluble and non‐fluorescent due to the dissipation of energy through free molecular motion of the AIEgen, but the fluorescence is immediately turned on upon click reaction with azide‐functionalized glycans on cancer cell surface. The fluorescence turn‐on is ascribed to the restriction of molecular motion of AIEgen, which populates the radiative decay channel. Moreover, the AIEgen can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon visible light (λ=400–700 nm) irradiation, demonstrating its dual role as an imaging and phototherapeutic agent.  相似文献

Purely organic materials showing room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and ultralong RTP (OURTP) have recently attracted much attention. However, it is challenging to integrate circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) into RTP/OURTP. Here, we show a strategy to realize CPL‐active OURTP (CP‐OURTP) by binding an achiral phosphor group directly to the chiral center of an ester chain. Engineering of this flexible chiral chain enables efficient chirality transfer to carbazole aggregates, resulting in strong CP‐OURTP with a lifetime of over 0.6 s and dissymmetry factor of 2.3×10?3 after the conformation regulation upon photo‐activation. The realized CP‐OURTP is thus stable at room temperature but can be deactivated quickly at 50 °C to CP‐RTP with high CPL stability during the photo‐activation/thermal‐deactivation cycles. Based on this extraordinary photo/thermal‐responsive and highly reversible CP‐OURTP/RTP, a CPL‐featured lifetime‐encrypted combinational logic device has been successfully established.  相似文献

Achieving a large dissymmetry factor (glum) is a challenge in the field of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). A chiral charge‐transfer (CT) system consisting of chiral electron donor and achiral electron acceptor shows bright circularly polarized emission with large glum value. The chiral emissive CT complexes could be fabricated through various approaches, such as grinding, crystallization, spin coating, and gelatinization, by simply blending chiral donor and achiral acceptor. The structural synergy originating from π–π stacking and strong CT interactions resulted in the long‐range ordered self‐assembly, enabling the formation of supramolecular gels. Benefiting from the large magnetic dipole transition moment in the CT state, the CPL activity of CT complexes exhibited large circular polarization. Our design strategy of the chiral emissive CT complexes is expected to help the development of new molecular engineering strategies for designing highly efficient CPL‐active materials.  相似文献

Through mimicking both the chiral and energy transfer in an artificial self‐assembled system, not only was chiral transfer realized but also a dual upconverted and downconverted energy transfer system was created that emit circularly polarized luminescence. The individual chiral π‐gelator can self‐assemble into a nanofiber exhibiting supramolecular chirality and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). In the presence of an achiral sensitizer PdII octaethylporphyrin derivative, both chirality transfer from chiral gelator to achiral sensitizer and triplet‐triplet energy transfer from excited sensitizer to chiral gelator could be realized. Upconverted CPL could be observed through a triplet–triplet annihilation photon upconversion (TTA‐UC), while downconverted CPL could be obtained from chirality‐transfer‐induced emission of the achiral sensitizer. The interplay between chiral energy acceptor and achiral sensitizer promoted the communication of chiral and excited energy information.  相似文献

Organic solid‐state semiconductor lasers are attracting ever‐increasing interest for their potential application in future photonic circuits. Despite the great progress made in recent years, an organic laser from 3D chiral structures has not been achieved. Now, the first example of an organic nano‐laser from the micro‐helix structure of an achiral molecule is presented. Highly regular micro‐helixes with left/right‐handed helicity from a distyrylbenzene derivative (HM‐DSB) were fabricated and characterized under microscope spectrometers. These chiral micro‐helixes exhibit unique photonic properties, including helicity‐dependent circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), periodic optical waveguiding, and length‐dependent amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) behavior. The successful observation of laser behavior from the organic micro‐helix extends our understanding to morphology chirality of organic photonic materials and provides a new design strategy towards chiral photonic circuits.  相似文献

Aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) is a photoluminescence phenomenon in which an AIE luminogen (AIEgen) exhibits intense emission in the aggregated or solid state but only weak or no emission in the solution state. Understanding the mechanism of AIE requires consideration of excited state molecular geometry (for example, a π twist). This Minireview examines the history of AIEgens with a focus on the representative AIEgen, tetraphenylethylene (TPE). The mechanisms of solution‐state quenching are reviewed and the crucial role of excited‐state molecular transformations for AIE is discussed. Finally, recent progress in understanding the relationship between excited state molecular transformations and AIE is overviewed for a range of different AIEgens.  相似文献

The development of novel photosensitizing agents with aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) properties has fueled significant advances in the field of photodynamic therapy (PDT). An electroporation method was used to prepare tumor‐exocytosed exosome/AIE luminogen (AIEgen) hybrid nanovesicles (DES) that could facilitate efficient tumor penetration. Dexamethasone was then used to normalize vascular function within the tumor microenvironment (TME) to reduce local hypoxia, thereby significantly enhancing the PDT efficacy of DES nanovesicles, and allowing them to effectively inhibit tumor growth. The hybridization of AIEgen and biological tumor‐exocytosed exosomes was achieved for the first time, and combined with PDT approaches by normalizing the intratumoral vasculature as a means of reducing local tissue hypoxia. This work highlights a new approach to the design of AIEgen‐based PDT systems and underscores the potential clinical value of AIEgens.  相似文献

Chiral self‐assembly is a basic process in biological systems, where many chiral biomolecules such as amino acids and sugars play important roles. Achiral nucleobases usually covalently bond to saccharides and play a significant role in the formation of the double helix structure. However, it remains unclear how the achiral nucleobases can function in chiral self‐assembly without the sugar modification. Herein, we have clarified that purine nucleobases could trigger N‐(9‐fluorenylmethox‐ycarbonyl) (Fmoc)‐protected glutamic acid to self‐assemble into helical nanostructures. Moreover, the helical nanostructure could serve as a matrix and transfer the chirality to an achiral fluorescence probe, thioflavin T (ThT). Upon chirality transfer, the ThT showed not only supramolecular chirality but also circular polarized fluorescence (CPL). Without the nucleobase, the self‐assembly processes cannot happen, thus providing an example where achiral molecules played an essential role in the expression and transfer of the chirality.  相似文献

Planar luminogens have encountered difficulties in overcoming intrinsic aggregation‐caused emission quenching by intermolecular π‐π stacking interactions. Although excited‐state double‐bond reorganization (ESDBR) can guide us on designing planar aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) luminogens (AIEgens), its mechanism has yet been elucidated. Major challenges in the field include methods to efficiently restrict ESDBR and enhance AIE performance without using bulky substituents (e.g., tetraphenylethylene and triphenylamine). In this study, we rationally developed fluoro‐substituent AIEgens with stronger intermolecular H‐bonding interaction for restricted molecular motions and increased crystal density, leading to decreased nonradiative decay rate by one order of magnitude. The adjusted ESDBR properties also show a corresponding response to variation in viscosity. Furthermore, their aggregation‐induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generations have been discovered. The application of such planar AIEgen in treating multidrug‐resistant bacteria has been demonstrated in a mouse model. The relationship between ROS generation and distinct E/Z‐configurational stacking behaviors have been further understood, providing a design principle for synthesizing planar AIEgen‐based photosensitizers.  相似文献

Host–guest complexation between calix[5]arene and aggregation‐induced emission luminogen (AIEgen) can significantly turn off both the energy dissipation pathways of intersystem crossing and thermal deactivation, enabling the absorbed excitation energy to mostly focus on fluorescence emission. The co‐assembly of calix[5]arene amphiphiles and AIEgens affords highly emissive supramolecular AIE nanodots thanks to their interaction severely restricting the intramolecular motion of AIEgens, which also show negligible generation of cytotoxic reactive oxygen species. In vivo studies with a peritoneal carcinomatosis‐bearing mouse model indicate that such supramolecular AIE dots have rather low in vivo side toxicity and can serve as a superior fluorescent bioprobe for ultrasensitive fluorescence image‐guided cancer surgery.  相似文献

Research on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has been a hot topic. Due to enthusiastic efforts by many researchers, hundreds of AIE luminogens (AIEgens) have been generated which were mainly based on archetypal silole, tetraphenylethene, distyrylanthracene, triphenylethene, and tetraphenyl-1,4-butadiene, etc. To enlarge the family of AIEgens and to enrich their functions, new AIEgens are in high demand. In this work, we report a new kind of AIEgen based on tetraphenylpyrazine (TPP), which could be readily prepared under mild reaction conditions. Furthermore, we show that the TPP derivatives possess a good thermal stability and their emission could be fine-tuned by varying the substituents on their phenyl rings. It is anticipated that TPP derivatives could serve as a new type of widely utilized AIEgen, based on their facile preparation, good thermo-, photo- and chemostabilities, and efficient emission.  相似文献

An innovative strategy for circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) of carbon dots (CDs) has been developed: The achiral CDs displayed contrary supramolecular chirality and opposite CPL in two different bi-solvent systems, which are due to the formation of self-assembled helical nanostructures with two diverse assembly modes (P and M) in aggregate state via intermolecular π-π interactions and differential hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) without the need of any additional element of chirality.  相似文献

By constructing a supramolecular light‐harvesting chiral nanotube in the aqueous phase, we demonstrate a cooperative energy and chirality transfer. It was found that a cyanostilbene‐appended glutamate compound (CG) self‐assembled into helical nanotubes exhibiting both supramolecular chirality and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). When two achiral acceptors, ThT and AO, with different energy bands were co‐assembled with the nanotube, the CG nanotube could transfer its chirality to both of the acceptors. The excitation energy could be transferred to ThT but only be sequentially transferred to AO. During this process, the CPL ascribed to the acceptor could be sequentially amplified. This work provides a new insight into the understanding the cooperative chirality and energy transfer in a chiral supramolecular system, which is similar to the natural light‐harvesting antennas.  相似文献

Chiral zero-dimensional hybrid metal halides (0D HMHs) could combine excellent optical properties and chirality, making them promising for circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). However, chiral 0D HMHs with efficient CPL have been rarely reported. Here, we propose an efficient strategy to achieve simultaneously high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and large dissymmetry factor (glum), by integrating achiral and chiral ligands into 0D HMHs. Specifically, three pairs of chiral 0D hybrid indium-antimony chlorides are synthesized by combing achiral guanidine with three types of chiral methylbenzylammonium-based derivatives as the organic cations. These chiral 0D HMHs exhibit near-unity PLQY and large glum values up to around ±1×10−2. The achiral guanidine ligand is not only essential to crystallize these hybrid indium-antimony chlorides to achieve near-unity PLQYs, but also greatly enhances the chirality induction from organic ligands to inorganic units in these 0D HMHs. Furthermore, the choice of different chiral ligands can modify the strength of hydrogen bonding interactions in these 0D HMHs, to maximize their glum values. Overall, this study provides a robust way to realize efficient CPL in chiral HMHs, expanding their applications in chiroptical fields.  相似文献

In order to get an easy way to achieve the transformation from aggregation‐caused quenching luminophores (ACQphores) to aggregation‐induced emission luminogens (AIEgens), we took aldehyde groups as the modifying group to decorate anthracene. The fluorescence performances of 9‐anthraldehyde (AnA) and 9,10‐anthracenedicarboxaldehyde (AnDA) in solution and aggregated state were studied. We found out that the aldehyde group can transform anthracene with aggregation‐caused quenching properties to AIEgen. The single‐crystal structures analysis of AnA and AnDA showed that their structure characteristics are responsible for the AIE properties of AnA and AnDA. On one hand, the aldehyde group can cause steric effects to lower intermolecular π‐π packing style in aggregated state. On the other hand, intermolecular H‐bonding interactions can restrict the intramolecular rotation and suppress internal charge transfer. These results may supply a new simple method for the transformation from ACQphores to AIEgens on the point of the molecular design.  相似文献

Multiple noncovalent interactions can drive self‐assembly through different pathways. Here, by coordination‐assisted changes in π‐stacking modes between chromophores in pyrene‐conjugated histidine (PyHis), a self‐assembly system with reversible and inversed switching of supramolecular chirality, as well as circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is described. It was found that l ‐PyHis self‐assembled into nanofibers showing P‐chirality and right‐handed CPL. Upon ZnII coordination, the nanofibers changed into nanospheres with M‐chirality, as well as left‐handed CPL. The process is reversible and the M‐chirality can change to P‐chirality by removing the ZnII ions. Experimental and theoretical models unequivocally revealed that the cooperation of metal coordination and π‐stacking modes are responsible the reversible switching of supramolecular chirality. This work not only provides insight into how multiple noncovalent interactions regulate self‐assembly pathways.  相似文献
