Abstract

In debt financing, existence of information asymmetry on the firm quality between the firm management and bond investors may lead to significant adverse selection costs. We develop the two-stage sequential dynamic two-person game option models to analyse the market signalling role of the callable feature in convertible bonds. We show that firms with positive private information on earning potential may signal their type to investors via the callable feature in a convertible bond. We present the variational inequalities formulation with respect to various equilibrium strategies in the two-person game option models via characterization of the optimal stopping rules adopted by the bond issuer and bondholders. The bondholders’ belief system on the firm quality may be revealed with the passage of time when the issuer follows his optimal strategy of declaring call or bankruptcy. Under separating equilibrium, the quality status of the firm is revealed so the information asymmetry game becomes a new game under complete information. To analyse pooling equilibrium, the corresponding incentive compatibility constraint is derived. We manage to deduce the sufficient conditions for the existence of signalling equilibrium of our game option model under information asymmetry. We analyse how the callable feature may lower the adverse selection costs in convertible bond financing. We show how a low-quality firm may benefit from information asymmetry and vice versa, underpricing of the value of debt issued by a high-quality firm.  相似文献

We develop an eigenfunction expansion based value iteration algorithm to solve discrete time infinite horizon optimal stopping problems for a rich class of Markov processes that are important in applications. We provide convergence analysis for the value function and the exercise boundary, and derive easily computable error bounds for value iterations. As an application we develop a fast and accurate algorithm for pricing callable perpetual bonds under the CIR short rate model.  相似文献

Many debt issues contain an embedded call option that allows the issuer to redeem the bond at specified dates for a specified price. The issuer is typically required to provide advance notice of a decision to exercise this call option. The valuation of these contracts is an interesting numerical exercise because discontinuities may arise in the bond value or its derivative at call and/or notice dates. Recently, it has been suggested that finite difference methods cannot be used to price callable bonds requiring notice. Poor accuracy was attributed to discontinuities and difficulties in handling boundary conditions. As an alternative, a semi-analytical method using Green's functions for valuing callable bonds with notice was proposed. Unfortunately, the Green's function method is limited to special cases. Consequently, it is desirable to develop a more general approach. This is provided by using more advanced techniques such as flux limiters to obtain an accurate numerical partial differential equation method. Finally, in a typical pricing model an inappropriate financial condition is required in order to properly specify boundary conditions for the associated PDE. It is shown that a small perturbation of such a model is free from such artificial conditions.  相似文献

Convertible bond gives holder the right to choose a conversion strategy to maximize the bond value, and issuer also has the right to minimize the bond value in order to maximize equity value. When there is default occurring, conversion and calling strategies are invalid. In the framework of reduced form model, we reduce the price of convertible bond to variational inequalities, and the coefficients of variational inequalities are unbounded at the original point. Then the existence and uniqueness of variational inequality are proven. Finally, we prove that the conversion area, the calling area and the holding area are connected subsets of the state space.  相似文献

We consider the late accumulation stage, followed by the full decumulation stage, of an investor in a defined contribution (DC) pension plan. The investor’s portfolio consists of a stock index and a bond index. As a measure of risk, we use conditional value at risk (CVAR) at the end of the decumulation stage. This is a measure of the risk of depleting the DC plan, which is primarily driven by sequence of return risk and asset allocation during the decumulation stage. As a measure of reward, we use Ambition, which we define to be the probability that the terminal wealth exceeds a specified level. We develop a method for computing the optimal dynamic asset allocation strategy which generates points on the efficient Ambition-CVAR frontier. By examining the Ambition-CVAR efficient frontier, we can determine points that are Median-CVAR optimal. We carry out numerical tests comparing the Median-CVAR optimal strategy to a benchmark constant proportion strategy. For a fixed median value (from the benchmark strategy) we find that the optimal Median-CVAR control significantly improves the CVAR. In addition, the median allocation to stocks at retirement is considerably smaller than the benchmark allocation to stocks.  相似文献

There is a rich variety of tailored investment products available to the retail investor in every developed economy. These contracts combine upside participation in bull markets with downside protection in bear markets. Examples include equity-linked contracts and other types of structured products. This paper analyzes these contracts from the investor’s perspective rather than the issuer’s using concepts and tools from financial economics. We analyze and critique their current design and examine their valuation from the investor’s perspective. We propose a generalization of the conventional design that has some interesting features. The generalized contract specifications are obtained by assuming that the investor wishes to maximize end of period expected utility of wealth subject to certain constraints. The first constraint is a guaranteed minimum rate of return which is a common feature of conventional contracts. The second constraint is new. It provides the investor with the opportunity to outperform a benchmark portfolio with some probability. We present the explicit form of the optimal contract assuming both constraints apply and we illustrate the nature of the solution using specific examples. The paper focusses on equity-indexed annuities as a representative type of such contracts but our approach is applicable to other types of equity-linked contracts and structured products.  相似文献

Issuances in the USD 260 Bn global market of perpetual risky debt are often motivated by capital requirements for financial institutions. We analyze callable risky perpetual debt emphasizing an initial protection (‘grace’) period before the debt may be called. The total market value of debt including the call option is expressed as a portfolio of perpetual debt and barrier options with a time dependent barrier. We also analyze how an issuer’s optimal bankruptcy decision is affected by the existence of the call option by using closed-form approximations. The model quantifies the increased coupon and the decreased initial bankruptcy level caused by the embedded option. Examples indicate that our closed form model produces reasonably precise coupon rates compared to numerical solutions. The credit-spread produced by our model is in a realistic order of magnitude compared to market data.  相似文献

Typically, implied volatilities for defaultable instruments are not available in the financial market since quotations related to options on defaultable bonds or on credit default swaps are usually not quoted by brokers. However, an estimate of their volatilities is needed for pricing purposes. In this paper, we provide a methodology to infer market implied volatilities for defaultable bonds using equity implied volatilities and CDS spreads quoted by the market in relation to a specific issuer. The theoretical framework we propose is based on the Merton’s model under stochastic interest rates where the short rate is assumed to follow the Hull–White model. A numerical analysis is provided to illustrate the calibration process to be performed starting from financial market data. The market implied volatility calibrated according to the proposed methodology could be used to evaluate options where the underlying is a risky bond, i.e. callable bond or other types of credit-risk sensitive financial instruments.

In this paper, we consider some behaviors of the optimal conversion boundaries (i.e. free boundaries) of American‐style convertible bond with finite horizon in some case. The bond's holder may convert it into the stock of its issued firm at any time before maturity, and the firm may call it at any time before maturity. Its pricing model is a parabolic variational inequality, in which the fundamental variables are time and the stock price of the bond's issuer. We achieve some properties of the free boundary, besides the existence and uniqueness of the solution of the variational inequality, such as: the monotonicity, the boundedness, smoothness and its starting point. Moreover, we analyze the relationship between the free boundary and the parameters in the problem, as well as, obtain the critical condition where the free boundary is a constant independent of time. As a main contribution we present a new approach for studying the problem of optimal partial hedging of an American contingent claim in a finite and complete discrete-time market. We assume that at an early exercise time the investor can borrow the amount she has to pay for the option holder by entering a short position in the numéraire asset and that this loan in turn will mature at the expiration date. We model and solve a partial hedging problem, where the investor’s purpose is to find a minimal amount at which she can hedge the above-mentioned loan with a given probability, while the potential shortfall is bounded above by a certain number of numéraire assets. A knapsack problem approach and greedy algorithm are used in solving the problem. To get a wider view of the subject and to make interesting comparisons, we treat also a closely related European case as well as an American case where a barrier condition is applied.  相似文献

Classical irreversible investment problem admits an optimal strategy of threshold type. But there is no consensus on how the investor should adjust the threshold, if there is an implementation delay. By formulating a general problem with random delay and partial prepayment, we find that the effect of delay can be opposite for different prepayment rates. Besides, although the constant delay model is commonly used, we argue that it is a reasonable approximation only if the discount rate is small.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the optimal portfolio selection problem in continuous-time settings where the investor maximizes the expected utility of the terminal wealth in a stochastic market. The utility function has the structure of the HARA family and the market states change according to a Markov process. The states of the market describe the prevailing economic, financial, social and other conditions that affect the deterministic and probabilistic parameters of the model. This includes the distributions of the random asset returns as well as the utility function. We analyzed Black–Scholes type continuous-time models where the market parameters are driven by Markov processes. The Markov process that affects the state of the market is independent of the underlying Brownian motion that drives the stock prices. The problem of maximizing the expected utility of the terminal wealth is investigated and solved by stochastic optimal control methods for exponential, logarithmic and power utility functions. We found explicit solutions for optimal policy and the associated value functions. We also constructed the optimal wealth process explicitly and discussed some of its properties. In particular, it is shown that the optimal policy provides linear frontiers.  相似文献

本文研究了投资者在极端事件冲击下带通胀的最优投资组合选择问题, 其中投资者不仅对损失风险是厌恶的而且对模型不确定也是厌恶的. 投资者在风险资产和无风险资产中进行投资. 首先, 利用Ito公式推导考虑通胀的消费篮子价格动力学方程, 其次由通胀折现的终端财富预期效用最大化, 对含糊厌恶投资者的最优期望效用进行刻画. 利用动态规划原理, 建立最优消费和投资策略所满足的HJB方程. 再次, 利用市场分解的方法解出HJB方程, 获得投资者最优消费和投资策略的显式解. 最后, 通过数值模拟, 分析了含糊厌恶、风险厌恶、跳和通胀因素对投资者最优资产配置策略的影响.  相似文献

This article studies optimal consumption-leisure, portfolio and retirement selection of an infinitely lived investor whose preference is formulated by ??-maxmin expected CES utility which is to differentiate ambiguity and ambiguity attitude. Adopting the recursive multiplepriors utility and the technique of backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs), we transform the ??-maxmin expected CES utility into a classical expected CES utility under a new probability measure related to the degree of an investor??s uncertainty. Our model investigates the optimal consumption-leisure-work selection, the optimal portfolio selection, and the optimal stopping problem. In this model, the investor is able to adjust her supply of labor flexibly above a certain minimum work-hour along with a retirement option. The problem can be analytically solved by using a variational inequality. And the optimal retirement time is given as the first time when her wealth exceeds a certain critical level. The optimal consumption-leisure and portfolio strategies before and after retirement are provided in closed forms. Finally, the distinctions of optimal consumption-leisure, portfolio and critical wealth level under ambiguity from those with no vagueness are discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper focuses on an asset-liability management problem for an investor who can invest in a risk-free asset and a risky asset whose price process is governed by the Heston model. The objective of the investor is to find an optimal investment strategy to maximize the expected exponential utility of the surplus process. By using the stochastic control method and variable change techniques, we obtain a closed-form solution of the corresponding Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman equation. We also develop a verification theorem without the usual Lipschitz assumptions which can ensure that this closed-form solution is indeed the value function and then derive the optimal investment strategy explicitly. Finally, we provide numerical examples to show how the main parameters of the model affect the optimal investment strategy.  相似文献

This paper discusses the valuation of credit default swaps, where default is announced when the reference asset price has gone below certain level from the last record maximum, also known as the high-water mark or drawdown. We assume that the protection buyer pays premium at a fixed rate when the asset price is above a pre-specified level and continuously pays whenever the price increases. This payment scheme is in favour of the buyer as she only pays the premium when the market is in good condition for the protection against financial downturn. Under this framework, we look at an embedded option which gives the issuer an opportunity to call back the contract to a new one with reduced premium payment rate and slightly lower default coverage subject to paying a certain cost. We assume that the buyer is risk neutral investor trying to maximize the expected monetary value of the option over a class of stopping time. We discuss optimal solution to the stopping problem when the source of uncertainty of the asset price is modelled by Lévy process with only downward jumps. Using recent development in excursion theory of Lévy process, the results are given explicitly in terms of scale function of the Lévy process. Furthermore, the value function of the stopping problem is shown to satisfy continuous and smooth pasting conditions regardless of regularity of the sample paths of the Lévy process. Optimality and uniqueness of the solution are established using martingale approach for drawdown process and convexity of the scale function under Esscher transform of measure. Some numerical examples are discussed to illustrate the main results.  相似文献
