Given a selfadjoint, elliptic operator L, one would like to know how the spectrum changes as the spatial domain Ω ? ? n is deformed. For a family of domains {Ω t } t∈[a, b] we prove that the Morse index of L on Ω a differs from the Morse index of L on Ω b by the Maslov index of a path of Lagrangian subspaces on the boundary of Ω. This is particularly useful when Ω a is a domain for which the Morse index is known, e.g. a region with very small volume. Then the Maslov index computes the difference of Morse indices for the “original” problem (on Ω b ) and the “simplified” problem (on Ω a ). This generalizes previous multi-dimensional Morse index theorems that were only available on star-shaped domains or for Dirichlet boundary conditions. We also discuss how one can compute the Maslov index using crossing forms, and present some applications to the spectral theory of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary value problems.  相似文献

In this paper we prove Morse type inequalities for the contractible 1-periodic solutions of time dependent Hamiltonian differential equations on those compact symplectic manifolds M for which the symplectic form and the first Chern class of the tangent bundle vanish over π2 (M). The proof is based on a version of infinite dimensional Morse theory which is due to Floer. The key point is an index theorem for the Fredholm operator which plays a central role in Floer homology. The index formula involves the Maslov index of nondegenerate contractible periodic solutions. This Maslov index plays the same role as the Morse index of a nondegenerate critical point does in finite dimensional Morse theory. We shall use this connection between Floer homology and Maslov index to establish the existence of infinitely many periodic solutions having integer periods provided that every 1-periodic solution has at least one Floquet multiplier which is not equal to 1.  相似文献

We study the Jacobi equation for fixed endpoints solutions of the Lorentz force equation on a Lorentzian manifold. The flow of the Jacobi equation along each solution preserves the so-called twisted symplectic form, and the corresponding curve in the symplectic group determines an integer valued homology class called the Maslov index of the solution. We introduce the notion of F-conjugate plane for each conjugate instant; the restriction of the spacetime metric to the F-conjugate plane is used to compute the Maslov index, which is given by a sort of algebraic count of the conjugate instants. For a stationary Lorentzian manifold and an exact electromagnetic field admitting a potential vector field preserving the flow of the Killing vector field, we introduce a constrained action functional having finite Morse index and whose critical points are fixed endpoints solution of the Lorentz force equation. We prove that the value of this Morse index equals the Maslov index and we prove the Morse relations for the solutions of the Lorentz force equation in a static spacetime.Mathematics Subject Classification (2002): Primary: 58E10, 83C10; Secondary: 53D12  相似文献

We study the spectrum of Schrödinger operators with matrixvalued potentials, utilizing tools from infinite-dimensional symplectic geometry. Using the spaces of abstract boundary values, we derive relations between the Morse and Maslov indices for a family of operators on a Hilbert space obtained by perturbing a given self-adjoint operator by a smooth family of bounded self-adjoint operators. The abstract results are applied to the Schrödinger operators with θ-periodic, Dirichlet, and Neumann boundary conditions. In particular, we derive an analogue of the Morse-Smale Index Theorem for multi-dimensional Schrödinger operators with periodic potentials. For quasi-convex domains in Rn, we recast the results, connecting the Morse and Maslov indices using the Dirichlet and Neumann traces on the boundary of the domain.  相似文献

We first establish Maslov index for non-canonical Hamiltonian system by using symplectic transformation for Hamiltonian system. Then the existence of multiple periodic solutions for the non-canonical Hamiltonian system is obtained by applying the Maslov index and Morse theory. As an application of the results, we study a class of non-autonomous differential delay equation which can be changed to non-canonical Hamiltonian system and obtain the existence of multiple periodic solutions for the equation by employing variational method.  相似文献

In this paper, we discuss geometric structures related to the Lagrange multipliers rule. The practical goal is to explain how to compute or estimate the Morse index of the second variation. Symplectic geometry allows one to effectively do it even for very degenerate problems with complicated constraints. The main geometric and analytic tool is an appropriately rearranged Maslov index. We try to emphasize the geometric framework and omit analytic routine. Proofs are often replaced with informal explanations, but a well-trained mathematician will easily rewrite them in a conventional way. We believe that Vladimir Arnold would approve of such an attitude.  相似文献

We give a functional analytical proof of the equalitybetween the Maslov index of a semi-Riemannian geodesicand the spectral flow of the path of self-adjointFredholm operators obtained from the index form. This fact, together with recent results on the bifurcation for critical points of strongly indefinite functionals imply that each nondegenerate and nonnull conjugate (or P-focal)point along a semi-Riemannian geodesic is a bifurcation point.In particular, the semi-Riemannian exponential map is notinjective in any neighborhood of a nondegenerate conjugate point,extending a classical Riemannian result originally due to Morse and Littauer.  相似文献

A useful tool for studying nonlinear differential equations is index theory. For symplectic paths on bounded intervals, the index theory has been completely established, which revealed tremendous applications in the study of periodic orbits of Hamiltonian systems. Nevertheless, analogous questions concerning homoclinic orbits are still left open. In this paper we use a geometric approach to set up Maslov index for homoclinic orbits of Hamiltonian systems. On the other hand, a relative Morse index for homoclinic orbits will be derived through Fredholm index theory. It will be shown that these two indices coincide.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a multigrid algorithm based on the full approximate scheme for solving the membrane constrained obstacle problems and the minimal surface obstacle problems in the formulations of HJB equations. A Newton-Gauss-Seidel (NGS) method is used as smoother. A Galerkin coarse grid operator is proposed for the membrane constrained obstacle problem. Comparing with standard FAS with the direct discretization coarse grid operator, the FAS with the proposed operator converges faster. A special prolongation operator is used to interpolate functions accurately from the coarse grid to the fine grid at the boundary between the active and inactive sets. We will demonstrate the fast convergence of the proposed multigrid method for solving two model obstacle problems and compare the results with other multigrid methods.  相似文献

We use the heat flow on the loop space of a closed Riemannian manifold—viewed as a parabolic boundary value problem for infinite cylinders—to construct an algebraic chain complex. The chain groups are generated by perturbed closed geodesics. The boundary operator is defined by counting, modulo time shift, heat flow trajectories between geodesics of Morse index difference one. By Salamon and Weber (GAFA 16:1050–138, 2006) this heat flow homology is naturally isomorphic to Floer homology of the cotangent bundle for Hamiltonians given by kinetic plus potential energy.  相似文献

We consider the Cauchy problem with spatially localized initial data for the twodimensional wave equation degenerating on the boundary of the domain. This problem arises, in particular, in the theory of tsunami wave run-up on a shallow beach. Earlier, S. Yu. Dobrokhotov, V. E. Nazaikinskii, and B. Tirozzi developed a method for constructing asymptotic solutions of this problem. The method is based on a modified Maslov canonical operator and on characteristics (trajectories) unbounded in the momentum variables; such characteristics are nonstandard from the viewpoint of the theory of partial differential equations. In a neighborhood of the velocity degeneration line, which is a caustic of a special form, the canonical operator is defined via the Hankel transform, which arises when applying Fock’s quantization procedure to the canonical transformation regularizing the above-mentioned nonstandard characteristics in a neighborhood of the velocity degeneration line (the boundary of the domain). It is shown in the present paper that the restriction of the asymptotic solutions to the boundary is determined by the standard canonical operator, which simplifies the asymptotic formulas for the solution on the boundary dramatically; for initial perturbations of special form, the solutions can be expressed via simple algebraic functions.  相似文献

The symplectic versions of the Sturm oscillation and comparison theorem describe some properties of the Maslov index and were proved by developing a suitable intersection theory in the Lagrangian Grassmannian setting. What we propose here is a Sturm oscillation and comparison theorem for indefinite systems, obtained by defining a new index by means of the Brouwer degree of a determinant map associated with a suspension of a complexified family of boundary value problems.  相似文献

We revisit the definition of the Maslov index of loops in coisotropic submanifolds tangent to the characteristic foliation of this submanifold. This Maslov index is given by the mean index of a certain symplectic path which is a lift of the holonomy along the loop. We prove a Maslov index rigidity result for stable coisotropic submanifolds in a broad class of ambient symplectic manifolds. Furthermore, we establish a nearby existence theorem for the same class of ambient manifolds.  相似文献
