In the present paper we have directly computed the Berry curvature terms relevant for graphene in the presence of an inhomogeneous lattice distortion. We have employed the generalized Foldy–Wouthuysen framework, developed by some of us. We show that a non-constant lattice distortion leads to a valley–orbit coupling which is responsible for a valley–Hall effect. This is similar to the valley–Hall effect induced by an electric field proposed in the literature and is the analogue of the spin–Hall effect in semiconductors. Our general expressions for Berry curvature, for the special case of homogeneous distortion, reduce to the previously obtained results. We also discuss the Berry phase in the quantization of cyclotron motion.  相似文献

Low-density networks of single-wall carbon nanotubes have been modified by palladium nanoparticles using an electrochemical method. A major advantage of this approach is that it allows for selective metal deposition on the electrically contacted nanotubes, whereas the remaining substrate surface and the non-contacted tubes remain essentially unaffected. The Pd-decorated networks function as effective hydrogen sensors enabling the detection of hydrogen concentrations as low as 10 ppm at room temperature. The electrochemical metal deposition scheme is promising for the development of sensor arrays suitable for analysing gas mixtures.  相似文献

The expressions for the energy spectra of monolayer, bilayer, and multilayer graphene, as well as epitaxial graphene, are derived using the quantum Green’s functions method. Analytic expressions are obtained for the densities of states of these systems. It is shown that a bandgap can appear the spectrum of an epitaxial graphene bilayer. A number of problems in the thermodynamics of electrons in free and epitaxial graphene layers are considered as applications. Analytic expressions are obtained for the chemical potential and heat capacity in the limiting cases of low and high temperatures. Quantum oscillations of heat capacity in graphene are analyzed taking into account the Coulomb interaction. The Berry phase of epitaxial graphene is investigated.  相似文献

The semiclassical quantization of cyclotron orbits for two-dimensional Bloch electrons in a coupled two band model with a particle-hole symmetric spectrum is considered. As concrete examples, we study graphene (both mono and bilayer) and boron nitride. The main focus is on wave effects – such as Berry phase and Maslov index – occurring at order (h/2p)\hbar in the semiclassical quantization and producing non-trivial shifts in the resulting Landau levels. Specifically, we show that the index shift appearing in the Landau levels is related to a topological part of the Berry phase – which is basically a winding number of the direction of the pseudo-spin 1/2 associated to the coupled bands – acquired by an electron during a cyclotron orbit and not to the complete Berry phase, as commonly stated. As a consequence, the Landau levels of a coupled band insulator are shifted as compared to a usual band insulator. We also study in detail the Berry curvature in the whole Brillouin zone on a specific example (boron nitride) and show that its computation requires care in defining the “k-dependent Hamiltonian” H(k), where k is the Bloch wavevector.  相似文献

We investigate the effect of the environment on a Berry phase measurement involving a spin-half. We model the spin + environment using a biased spin-boson Hamiltonian with a time-dependent magnetic field. We find that, contrary to naive expectations, the Berry phase acquired by the spin can be observed, but only on time scales which are neither too short nor very long. However this Berry phase is not the same as for the isolated spin-half. It does not have a simple geometric interpretation in terms of the adiabatic evolution of either bare spin states or the dressed spin resonances. This result is crucial for proposed Berry phase measurements in superconducting nanocircuits.  相似文献

We have presented here the consequences of the non-uniform exchange field on the spin transport issues in spin chiral configuration of ferromagnetic graphene. Taking resort to the spin–orbit coupling (SOC) term and non-uniform exchange coupling term we are successful to express the expression of Hall conductivity in terms of the exchange field and SOC parameters through the Kubo formula approach. However, for a specific configuration of the exchange parameter we have evaluated the Berry curvature of the system. We also have paid attention to the study of SU(2) gauge theory of ferromagnetic graphene. The generation of anti damping spin–orbit torque in spin chiral magnetic graphene is also briefly discussed.  相似文献

The electronic transport properties of graphene exhibit pronounced differences from those of conventional two dimensional electron systems investigated in the past. As a consequence, well established phenomena such as the integer quantum Hall effect and weak localization manifest themselves differently in graphene. Here we present an overview of recent experiments that we have performed to probe phase coherent transport. In particular, we have investigated in great detail Josephson supercurrent and superconducting proximity effect in junctions consisting of a graphene layer in between superconducting electrodes. We have also used the same devices to measure aperiodic conductance fluctuations and weak localization. The experimental results clearly indicate that low-temperature transport in graphene is phase coherent on a ∼ 1μm length scale, irrespective of the position of the Fermi level. We discuss the different behavior of Josephson supercurrent and weak localization in terms of the unusual properties of the electronic states in graphene upon time reversal symmetry.  相似文献

We have found a manifestation of spin-orbit Berry phase in the conductance of a mesoscopic loop with Rashba spin-orbit coupling placed in an external magnetic field perpendicular to the loop plane. In detail, the transmission probabilities for a straight quantum wire and for a quantum loop made of the same wire have been calculated and compared with each other. The difference between them has been investigated and identified with a manifestation of spin-orbit Berry phase. The non-adiabaticity effects at small radii of the loop have been found as well.  相似文献

The pairing of electrons and holes due to their Coulomb attraction in two parallel, independently gated graphene layers separated by a barrier is considered. At a weak coupling, there exists the BCS-like pair-condensed state. Despite the fact that electrons and holes behave like massless Dirac fermions, the problem of BCS-like electron—hole pairing in the graphene bilayer turns out to be rather similar to that in usual coupled semiconductor quantum wells. The distinctions are due to the Berry phase of electronic wavefunctions and different screening properties. We estimate the values of the gap in a one-particle excitation spectrum for different interlayer distances and carrier concentrations. The influence of the disorder is discussed. At a large enough dielectric susceptibility of the surrounding medium, the weak coupling regime holds at arbitrarily small carrier concentrations. Localized electron—hole pairs are absent in graphene, thus the behavior of the system versus the coupling strength is cardinally different from usual BCS—BEC crossover. Two different gauge potential methods are engaged to calculate explicitly the spin Hall conductivity in graphene. The graphene Hamiltonian with spin-orbit interaction is expressed in terms of kinematic momenta by introducing a gauge potential. A formulation of the spin Hall conductivity is established by requiring that the time evolution of this kinematic momentum vector vanishes. We then calculated the conductivity employing the Berry gauge fields. We show that both of the gauge fields can be deduced from the pure gauge field arising from the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformations.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the Berry phase of many-body system in the time-dependent representation. The formula of Berry phase of many-body system calculating in the time-dependent representation is derived. In this scenario, the Berry phase can be decomposed into two terms, which have different physical meanings respectively. Using these formula, we calculated the Berry phase for the many-spin system coupled by the XXZ exchange interaction. The results show that the Berry phase consists of two contributions which can be interpreted as the flux of a nonquantized monopole and the flux of a Dirac ring respectively.  相似文献

Geometric phase of mixed state is investigated for three-level system obeying a high-temperature master equation. The results show the Berry phase of mixed phase is strongly dependent on the initial condition. For the different initial angle, the turning region is different. In addition, the decrease of Berry phase is most slow around the coupling strength α=5 with an increasing of evolving time.  相似文献

The stationary phase method is frequently adopted for calculating tunneling phase times of analytically-continuous Gaussian or infinite-bandwidth step pulses which collide with a potential barrier. This report deals with the basic concepts on deducing transit times for quantum scattering: the stationary phase method and its relation with delay times for relativistic and non-relativistic tunneling particles. After reexamining the above-barrier diffusion problem, we notice that the applicability of this method is constrained by several subtleties in deriving the phase time that describes the localization of scattered wave packets. Using a recently developed procedure - multiple wave packet decomposition - for some specifical colliding configurations, we demonstrate that the analytical difficulties arising when the stationary phase method is applied for obtaining phase (traversal) times are all overcome. In this case, we also investigate the general relation between phase times and dwell times for quantum tunneling/scattering. Considering a symmetrical collision of two identical wave packets with an one-dimensional barrier, we demonstrate that these two distinct transit time definitions are explicitly connected. The traversal times are obtained for a symmetrized (two identical bosons) and an antisymmetrized (two identical fermions) quantum colliding configuration. Multiple wave packet decomposition shows us that the phase time (group delay) describes the exact position of the scattered particles and, in addition to the exact relation with the dwell time, leads to correct conceptual understanding of both transit time definitions. At last, we extend the non-relativistic formalism to the solutions for the tunneling zone of a one-dimensional electrostatic potential in the relativistic (Dirac to Klein-Gordon) wave equation where the incoming wave packet exhibits the possibility of being almost totally transmitted through the potential barrier. The conditions for the occurrence of accelerated and, eventually, superluminal tunneling transmission probabilities are all quantified and the problematic superluminal interpretation based on the non-relativistic tunneling dynamics is revisited. Lessons concerning the dynamics of relativistic tunneling and the mathematical structure of its solutions suggest revealing insights into mathematically analogous condensed-matter experiments using electrostatic barriers in single- and bi-layer graphene, for which the accelerated tunneling effect deserves a more careful investigation.  相似文献

We employ the tight binding model to describe the electronic band structure of bilayer graphene and we explain how the optical absorption coefficient of a bilayer is influenced by the presence and dispersion of the electronic bands, in contrast to the featureless absorption coefficient of monolayer graphene. We show that the effective low energy Hamiltonian is dominated by chiral quasiparticles with a parabolic dispersion and Berry phase 2π. Layer asymmetry produces a gap in the spectrum but, by comparing the charging energy with the single particle energy, we demonstrate that an undoped, gapless bilayer is stable with respect to the spontaneous opening of a gap. Then, we describe the control of a gap in the presence of an external gate voltage. Finally, we take into account the influence of trigonal warping which produces a Lifshitz transition at very low energy, breaking the isoenergetic line about each valley into four pockets.  相似文献

It has been recently found that the equations of motion of several semiclassical systems must take into account terms arising from Berry phases contributions. Those terms are responsible for the spin Hall effect in semiconductor as well as the Magnus effect of light propagating in inhomogeneous media. Intensive ongoing research on this subject seems to indicate that a broad class of quantum systems may be affected by Berry phase terms. It is therefore important to find a general procedure allowing for the determination of semiclassical Hamiltonian with Berry Phase corrections. This article presents a general diagonalization method at order ħ for a large class of quantum Hamiltonians directly inducing Berry phase corrections. As a consequence, Berry phase terms on both coordinates and momentum operators naturally arise during the diagonalization procedure. This leads to new equations of motion for a wide class of semiclassical system. As physical applications we consider here a Dirac particle in an electromagnetic or static gravitational field, and the propagation of a Bloch electrons in an external electromagnetic field.  相似文献

The Berry phase of a bipartite system described by a Heisenberg XXZ model driven by a one-site magnetic field is investigated. The effect of the Dzyaloshinski-Moriya (DM) anisotropic interaction on the Berry phase is discussed. It is found that the DM interaction affects the Berry phase monotonously, and can also cause sudden change of the Berry phase for some weak magnetic field cases.  相似文献

Pancharatnam phase and Berry phase are investigated and compared for a three-level atom crosses a double cavity with two near resonant fields. The results show that the time-dependent Pancharatnam phase shows a transitive phenomenon during the evolving process of physical system according to both the time and the space, while the Berry phase as a smooth function of space because of the accumulative effect.  相似文献

Geometric phase is investigated for optical free induction decay with a modified Bloch equation by establishing in connecting density matrices with nonunit vector ray in a complex projective Hilbert space. Under the limiting of pure state, our approach may give out the Berry phase and Aharonov and Anandan one. Furthermore, by comparing our approach with the kinematic one, we find that, after a suitable modification to the kinematic approach, both differences are very small for the Berry phase of mixed states in the optical free induction decay under the case of quasicyclic evolution.  相似文献

We investigate the Berry phase of adiabatic quantum evolution in the atom-molecule conversion system that is governed by a nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We find that the Berry phase consists of two parts: the usual Berry connection term and a novel term from the nonlinearity brought forth by the atom-molecule coupling. The total geometric phase can be still viewed as the flux of the magnetic field of a monopole through the surface enclosed by a closed path in parameter space. The charge of the monopole, however, is found to be one third of the elementary charge of the usual quantized monopole. We also derive the classical Hannay angle of a geometric nature associated with the adiabatic evolution. It exactly equals minus Berry phase, indicating a novel connection between Berry phase and Hannay angle in contrast to the usual derivative form.  相似文献
