Let S be a subset of the plane. In case (int cl S) S = , then S is finitely starlike if and only if every 4 points of S see via S a common point. In case (int cl S) S has at most countably many components, each a singleton set, then S is finitely starlike if and only if every 5 points of S see via S a common point. Each of the numbers 4 and 5 is best possible. Examples show that these results fail without suitable restrictions on (int cl S) S. Moreover, a final example shows that if a general Krasnosel'skii number . exists to characterize finitely starlike sets in the plane, then > 9.  相似文献

We give a partial positive answer to a problem posed by Coifman et al. in [1]. Indeed, starting from the transfer function m0 arising from the Meyer wavelet and assuming m0=1 only on [–/3, /3], we provide an example of pairwise disjoint dyadic intervals of the form I(n, q)=[2qn, 2q(n+1)), (n, q)EN×Z, which cover [0, +) except for a set A of Hausdorff dimension equal to 1/2, and such that the corresponding wavelet packets 2q/2wn (2qx–k), kZ, (n, q)EN×Z form an orthonormal basis of L2(R).  相似文献

It is shown that if a linearly ordered set B does not contain as subsets sets of order type and * then B can be embedded in 2 . We construct an example of a set satisfying the above conditions which cannot be embedded in any 2 if < . There are described the subgroups of the general symplectic group =GSp(2n, R) over a commutative semilocal ring R, containing the group of symplectic diagonal matrices. For each such subgroup P there is uniquely defined a symplectic D-net a such that ()pN(), where () is the net subgroup in corresponding to (cf. RZhMat, 1977, 5A288), and N() is its normalizer. The quotient group N × ()/() is calculated. There are also considered subgroups in Sp(2n, R). Let be a projective space. In this paper we consider sets of planes of such that any two planes of intersect in exactly one point. Our investigation will lead to a classification of these sets in most cases. There are the following two main results:- If is a set of planes of a projective space intersecting mutually in one point, then the set of intersection points spans a subspace of dimension 6. There are up to isomorphism only three sets where this dimension is 6. These sets are related to the Fano plane.- If is a set of planes of PG(d,q) intersecting mutually in one point, and if q3, 3(q2+q+1), then is either contained in a Klein quadric in PG(5,q), or is a dual partial spread in PG(4,q), or all elements of pass through a common point.  相似文献

Denote by q an affine plane of order q. In the desarguesian case q=AG(2,q), q 5(q= ph, p prime), we prove that the smallest cardinality of a blocking set is 2q–1. In any arbitrary affine plane q (desarguesian or not) with q5, for any integer k with 2q–1 k(q–1)2, we construct a blocking set S with ¦S¦=k. For an irreducible blocking set S of q we determine the upper bound S [qq]+1. We prove that if q contains a blocking set S which is irreducible with its complementary blocking set, then necessarily q=AG(2, 4) and S is uniquely determined. A generalized projective plane is an incidence structure together with a relation distant on the set of points and also on the set of lines, such that any two distant points A,B (lines a,b) have a unique common line (A,B) (common point (a,b)) and three further axioms hold. Every commutative ring with 1 supplies a model. A homomorphism of into an incidence structure is called regular if the following condition and its dual are valid: A distant B and c IA,B implies c=(A,B). We shall prove the following two theorems. Let be a generalized projective plane satisfying a richness condition called (U). Let M I m. If and are regular homomorphisms of such that X = M X = M for each point X of the line m then A = B A = B for any two points A,B. If is a projective plane over a commutative ring such that (U) holds then the surjective regular homomorphisms of are induced by the ideals of the ring; in particular, the image of under a regular homomorphism is again a projective plane over a ring, and preserves distant.  相似文献

Niche width theory, a part of organizational ecology, predicts whether specialist or generalist forms of organizations have higher fitness, in a continually changing environment. To this end, niche width theory uses a mathematical model borrowed from biology. In this paper, we first loosen the specialist-generalist dichotomy, so that we can predict the optimal degree of specialization. Second, we generalize the model to a larger class of environmental conditions, on the basis of the model's underlying assumptions. Third, we criticize the way the biological model is treated in sociological theory. Two of the model's dimensions seem to be confused, i.e., that of trait and environment; the predicted optimal specialization is a property of individual organizations, not of populations; and, the distinction between fine and coarse grained environments is superfluous.  相似文献
