The dynamics of nonlinear pulse propagation in an average dispersion-managed soliton system is governed by a constant coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. For a special set of parameters the constant coefficient NLS equation is completely integrable. The same constant coefficient NLS equation is also applicable to optical fiber systems with phase modulation or pulse compression. We also investigate MI arising in the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation for ultrashort pulse propagation. Within this framework, we derive ordinary differential equations (ODE’s) for the time evolution of the amplitude and phase of modulation perturbations. Analyzing the ensuing ODE’s, we derive the classical modulational instability criterion and identify it numerically. We show that the quintic nonlinearity can be essential for the stability of solutions. The evolutions of modulational instability are numerically investigated and the effects of the quintic nonlinearity on the evolutions are examined. Numerical simulations demonstrate the validity of the analytical predictions.  相似文献

In this paper, for the first time, a three-dimensional treatment of microtubules’ polymerization is presented. Starting from fundamental biochemical reactions during microtubule’s assembly and disassembly processes, we systematically derive a nonlinear system of equations that determines the dynamics of microtubules in three dimensions. We found that the dynamics of a microtubule is mathematically expressed via a cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. We show that in 3D a vortex filament, a generic solution of the NLS equation, exhibits linear growth/shrinkage in time as well as temporal fluctuations about some mean value which is qualitatively similar to the dynamic instability of microtubules. By solving equations numerically, we have found spatio-temporal patterns consistent with experimental observations.  相似文献

Two non-isospectral generalized nonlinear Schrodinger (ONLS) equations, which are two important models of nonlinear excitations of matter waves in Bose-Einstein condensates, are studied. Two novel transformations are constructed such that these two GNLS equations are transformed to the well-known nonlinear Schr6dinger (NLS) equation, which is an isospectral equation. Therefore, once one solution of the NLS equation is provided, we can immediately obtain one solution for two ONLS equations by these transformations. Thus it is unnecessary to solve these two non-isospectral GNLS equations directly. Soliton solutions and periodic solutions are obtained for them by two transformations from the corresponding solutions of the NLS equation, which are generated by Darboux transformation.  相似文献

A multiple scales technique is employed to solve the fluid-Maxwell equations describing a weakly nonlinear circularly polarized electromagnetic pulse in magnetized plasma. A nonlinear Schrödinger-type (NLS) equation is shown to govern the amplitude of the vector potential. The conditions for modulational instability and for the existence of various types of localized envelope modes are investigated in terms of relevant parameters. Right-hand circularly polarized (RCP) waves are shown to be modulationally unstable regardless of the value of the ambient magnetic field and propagate as bright-type solitons. The same is true for left-hand circularly polarized (LCP) waves in a weakly to moderately magnetized plasma. In other parameter regions, LCP waves are stable in strongly magnetized plasmas and may propagate as dark-type solitons (electric field holes). The evolution of envelope solitons is analyzed numerically, and it is shown that solitons propagate in magnetized plasma without any essential change in amplitude and shape.  相似文献

We propose a general method to derive kinetic equations for dense soliton gases in physical systems described by integrable nonlinear wave equations. The kinetic equation describes evolution of the spectral distribution function of solitons due to soliton-soliton collisions. Owing to complete integrability of the soliton equations, only pairwise soliton interactions contribute to the solution, and the evolution reduces to a transport of the eigenvalues of the associated spectral problem with the corresponding soliton velocities modified by the collisions. The proposed general procedure of the derivation of the kinetic equation is illustrated by the examples of the Korteweg-de Vries and nonlinear Schr?dinger (NLS) equations. As a simple physical example, we construct an explicit solution for the case of interaction of two cold NLS soliton gases.  相似文献

We apply our recent formalism establishing new connections between the geometry of moving space curves and soliton equations, to the nonlinear Schr?dinger equation (NLS). We show that any given solution of the NLS gets associated with three distinct space curve evolutions. The tangent vector of the first of these curves, the binormal vector of the second and the normal vector of the third, are shown to satisfy the integrable Landau-Lifshitz (LL) equation = ×, ( = 1). These connections enable us to find the three surfaces swept out by the moving curves associated with the NLS. As an example, surfaces corresponding to a stationary envelope soliton solution of the NLS are obtained. The basic set of fluid equations can be reduced to the nonlinear Kortewege-de Vries (KdV) and nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations. The rational solutions for the two equations has been obtained. The exact amplitude of the nonlinear ion-acoustic solitary wave can be obtained directly without resorting to any successive approximation techniques by a direct analysis of the given field equations. The Sagdeev's potential is obtained in terms of ion acoustic velocity by simply solving an algebraic equation. The soliton and double layer solutions are obtained as a small amplitude approximation. A comparison between the exact soliton solution and that obtained from the reductive perturbation theory are also discussed.  相似文献

The nonlinear Schr?dinger equation (NLS) has been a fundamental model for understanding vortex motion in superfluids. The vortex motion law has been formally derived on various physical grounds and has been around for almost half a century. We study the nonlinear Schr?dinger equation in the incompressible fluid limit on a bounded domain with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary condition. The initial condition contains any finite number of degree ± 1 vortices. We prove that the NLS linear momentum weakly converges to a solution of the incompressible Euler equation away from the vortices. If the initial NLS energy is almost minimizing, we show that the vortex motion obeys the classical Kirchhoff law for fluid point vortices. Similar results hold for the entire plane and periodic cases, and a related complex Ginzburg–Landau equation. We treat as well the semi-classical (WKB) limit of NLS in the presence of vortices. In this limit, sound waves propagate through steady vortices. Received: 1 December 1997 / Accepted: 27 June 1998  相似文献

In this paper, we present solutions for the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with spatially inhomogeneous nonlinearities describing propagation of light in nonlinear media, under two sets of transverse modulation forms of inhomogeneous nonlinearity. The bright soliton solution and Gaussian solution have been obtained for one set of inhomogeneous nonlinearity modulation. For the other, bright soliton solution, black soliton solution and the train solution have been presented. Stability of the solutions has been determined by exact soliton solutions under certain conditions.  相似文献

We derive a kinetic equation for a polarized paramagnetic gas that is exact in the Boltzmann (binary) approximation. The equation is written in a compact form and applies to both Fermi and Bose gases in a wide temperature range as long as the Boltzmann approximation remains applicable. The derived equation is used to analyze the conditions for the propagation of spin waves in polarized Fermi and Bose gases. We deduce a universal criterion for the propagation of weakly damped spin waves in a wide temperature range. The criterion is reduced to the condition that the real parts of the particle zero-angle scattering amplitudes (or T matrices) be much larger than their imaginary parts. We derive dispersion equations for spin waves at high and low gas temperatures and show that spin waves can propagate in both these limiting cases.  相似文献

In this Letter, we discuss the electron acoustic (EA) waves in plasmas, which consist of nonthermal hot electrons featuring the Tsallis distribution, and obtain the corresponding governing equation, that is, a nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. By means of Modulation Instability (MI) analysis of the EA waves, it is found that both electron acoustic solitary wave and rogue wave can exist in such plasmas. Basing on the Darboux transformation method, we derive the analytical expressions of nonlinear solutions of NLS equations, such as single/double solitary wave solutions and single/double rogue wave solutions. The existential regions and amplitude of solitary wave solutions and the rogue wave solutions are influenced by the nonextensive parameter q and nonthermal parameter α. Moreover, the interaction of solitary wave and how to postpone the excitation of rogue wave are also studied.  相似文献

The cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (CQNLS) plays important parts in the optical fiber and the nuclear hydrodynamics. By using the homogeneous balance principle, the bell type, kink type, algebraic solitary waves, and trigonometric traveling waves for the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with variable coefficients (vCQNLS) are derived with the aid of a set of subsidiary high-order ordinary differential equations (sub-equations for short). The method used in this paper might help one to derive the exact solutions for the other high-order nonlinear evolution equations, and shows the new application of the homogeneous balance principle.  相似文献

In this paper, the extended symmetry transformation of (3+1)-dimensional (3D) generalized nonlinear Schrdinger (NLS) equations with variable coefficients is investigated by using the extended symmetry approach and symbolic computation. Then based on the extended symmetry, some 3D variable coefficient NLS equations are reduced to other variable coefficient NLS equations or the constant coefficient 3D NLS equation. By using these symmetry transformations, abundant exact solutions of some 3D NLS equations with distributed dispersion, nonlinearity, and gain or loss are obtained from the constant coefficient 3D NLS equation.  相似文献

Abstract

We show that by deforming the Riemann-Hilbert (RH) formalism associated with certain linear PDEs and using the so-called dressing method, it is possible to derive in an algorithmic way nonlinear integrable versions of these equations.

In the usual Dressing Method, one first postulates a matrix RH problem and then constructs dressing operators. Here we present an algorithmic construction of matrix Riemann-Hilbert (RH) problems appropriate for the dressing method as opposed to postulating them ad hoc. Furthermore, we introduce two mechanisms for the construction of the relevant dressing operators: The first uses operators with the same dispersive part, but with different decay at infinity, while the second uses pairs of operators corresponding to different Lax pairs of the same linear equation. As an application of our approach, we derive the NLS, derivative NLS, KdV, modified KdV and sine-Gordon equations.  相似文献

The sine-Gordon (SG) equation and perturbed nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations are studied numerically for modeling the propagation of two space dimensional (2D) localized pulses (the so-called light bullets) in nonlinear dispersive optical media. We begin with the (2 + 1) SG equation obtained as an asymptotic reduction in the two level dissipationless Maxwell-Bloch system, followed by the review on the perturbed NLS equation in 2D for SG pulse envelopes, which is globally well posed and has all the relevant higher order terms to regularize the collapse of standard critical (cubic focusing) NLS. The perturbed NLS is approximated by truncating the nonlinearity into finite higher order terms undergoing focusing-defocusing cycles. Efficient semi-implicit sine pseudospectral discretizations for SG and perturbed NLS are proposed with rigorous error estimates. Numerical comparison results between light bullet solutions of SG and perturbed NLS as well as critical NLS are reported, which validate that the solution of the perturbed NLS as well as its finite-term truncations are in qualitative and quantitative agreement with the solution of SG for the light bullets propagation even after the critical collapse of cubic focusing NLS. In contrast, standard critical NLS is in qualitative agreement with SG only before its collapse. As a benefit of such observations, pulse propagations are studied via solving the perturbed NLS truncated by reasonably many nonlinear terms, which is a much cheaper task than solving SG equation directly.  相似文献

In this paper, we analyze (2 + 1)D nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation based on a type of nonperiodic modulation of linear refractive index in the transverse direction. We obtain an exact solution in explicit form for the (2 + 1)D nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with the nonperiodic modulation. Finally, the stability of the solution is discussed numerically, and the results reveal that the solution is stable to the finite initial perturbations.  相似文献

N-coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations have been proposed to describe N-pulse simultaneous propagation in optical fibers. When the fiber is nonuniform, N-coupled variable-coefficient NLS equations can arise. In this paper, a family of N-coupled integrable variable-coefficient NLS equations are studied by using a generalized version of the dressing method. We first extend the dressing method to the versions with (N + 1) × (N + 1) operators and (2N + 1) × (2N + 1) operators. Then, we obtain three types of N-coupled variable-coefficient equations (N-coupled NLS equations, N-coupled Hirota equations and N-coupled high-order NLS equations). Then, the compatibility conditions are given, which insure that these equations are integrable. Finally, the explicit solutions of the new integrable equations are obtained.  相似文献
