Computing the minimal covering set   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We present the first polynomial-time algorithm for computing the minimal covering set of a (weak) tournament. The algorithm draws upon a linear programming formulation of a subset of the minimal covering set known as the essential set. On the other hand, we show that no efficient algorithm exists for two variants of the minimal covering set–the minimal upward covering set and the minimal downward covering set–unless P equals NP. Finally, we observe a strong relationship between von Neumann–Morgenstern stable sets and upward covering on the one hand, and the Banks set and downward covering on the other.  相似文献

We study the maximum stable set problem. For a given graph, we establish several transformations among feasible solutions of different formulations of Lovász's theta function. We propose reductions from feasible solutions corresponding to a graph to those corresponding to its induced subgraphs. We develop an efficient, polynomial-time algorithm to extract a maximum stable set in a perfect graph using the theta function. Our algorithm iteratively transforms an approximate solution of the semidefinite formulation of the theta function into an approximate solution of another formulation, which is then used to identify a vertex that belongs to a maximum stable set. The subgraph induced by that vertex and its neighbors is removed and the same procedure is repeated on successively smaller graphs. We establish that solving the theta problem up to an adaptively chosen, fairly rough accuracy suffices in order for the algorithm to work properly. Furthermore, our algorithm successfully employs a warm-start strategy to recompute the theta function on smaller subgraphs. Computational results demonstrate that our algorithm can efficiently extract maximum stable sets in comparable time it takes to solve the theta problem on the original graph to optimality. We study some counting and enumeration problems for chordal graphs, especially concerning independent sets. We first provide the following efficient algorithms for a chordal graph: (1) a linear-time algorithm for counting the number of independent sets; (2) a linear-time algorithm for counting the number of maximum independent sets; (3) a polynomial-time algorithm for counting the number of independent sets of a fixed size. With similar ideas, we show that enumeration (namely, listing) of the independent sets, the maximum independent sets, and the independent sets of a fixed size in a chordal graph can be done in constant time per output. On the other hand, we prove that the following problems for a chordal graph are #P-complete: (1) counting the number of maximal independent sets; (2) counting the number of minimum maximal independent sets. With similar ideas, we also show that finding a minimum weighted maximal independent set in a chordal graph is NP-hard, and even hard to approximate.  相似文献

In this paper we give some integer programming formulations for the Steiner tree problem on undirected and directed graphs and study the associated polyhedra. We give some families of facets for the undirected case along with some compositions and extensions. We also give a projection that relates the Steiner tree polyhedron on an undirected graph to the polyhedron for the corresponding directed graph. This is used to show that the LP-relaxation of the directed formulation is superior to the LP-relaxation of the undirected one.Corresponding author.  相似文献

Consider a finite family of non-empty sets. The intersection graph of this family is obtained by representing each set by a vertex, two vertices being connected by an edge if and only if the corresponding sets intersect. The intersection graph of a family of directed paths in a directed tree is called a directed path graph. In this paper we present an efficient algorithm which constructs to a given graph a representation by a family of directed paths on a directed tree, if one exists. Also, we prove that a graph is a proper directed path graph if and only if it is a directed path graph.  相似文献

Surrogate constraint methods have been embedded in a variety of mathematical programming applications over the past thirty years, yet their potential uses and underlying principles remain incompletely understood by a large segment of the optimization community. In a number of significant domains of combinatorial optimization, researchers have produced solution strategies without recognizing that they can be derived as special instances of surrogate constraint methods. Once the connection to surrogate constraint ideas is exposed, additional ways to exploit this framework become visible, frequently offering opportunities for improvement. We provide a tutorial on surrogate constraint approaches for optimization in graphs, illustrating the key ideas by reference to independent set and graph coloring problems, including constructions for weighted independent sets which have applications to associated covering and weighted maximum clique problems. In these settings, the surrogate constraints can be generated relative to well-known packing and covering formulations that are convenient for exposing key notions. The surrogate constraint approaches yield widely used heuristics for identifying independent sets as simple special cases, and also afford previously unidentified heuristics that have greater power in these settings. Our tutorial also shows how the use of surrogate constraints can be placed within the context of vocabulary building strategies for independent set and coloring problems, providing a framework for applying surrogate constraints that can be used in other applications. At a higher level, we show how to make use of surrogate constraint information, together with specialized algorithms for solving associated sub-problems, to obtain stronger objective function bounds and improved choice rules for heuristic or exact methods. The theorems that support these developments yield further strategies for exploiting surrogate constraint relaxations, both in graph optimization and integer programming generally.  相似文献

In the fixed-charge transportation problem, the goal is to optimally transport goods from depots to clients when there is a fixed cost associated to transportation or, equivalently, to opening an arc in the underlying bipartite graph. We further motivate its study by showing that it is both a special case and a strong relaxation of the big-bucket multi-item lot-sizing problem, and a generalization of a simple variant of the single-node flow set. This paper is essentially a polyhedral analysis of the polynomially solvable special case in which the associated bipartite graph is a path. We give a $\mathcal O (n^3)$ -time optimization algorithm and a $\mathcal O (n^2)$ -size linear programming extended formulation. We describe a new class of inequalities that we call “path-modular” inequalities. We give two distinct proofs of their validity. The first one is direct and crucially relies on sub- and super-modularity of an associated set function. The second proof is by showing that the projection of the extended linear programming formulations onto the original variable space yields exactly the polyhedron described by the path-modular inequalities. Thus we also show that these inequalities suffice to describe the convex hull of the set of feasible solutions.  相似文献

High speed networks such as the B-ISDN must be adequately equipped to handle multipoint communication in a fast and economical manner. Multicast applications include desktop video conferencing, distance learning, distributed database applications, etc. In networks employing the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) technology, routing a multicast is achieved by constructing a tree that spans the source and all the destinations. For the purpose of routing, the network is modeled as a weighted, undirected graph. The graph-theoretic solution is to find a minimum Steiner tree for the graph given a set of destinations. This formulation suffices for building multicast trees with a single optimization constraint as would be the xcase for best effort transport. For real-time traffic, however, it is necessary to ensure that the delay between the sender and each of the receivers is bounded. In this case the network is modeled as an undirected graph, where the edges have both a cost and a delay associated with them. The graph-theoretic solution is then to find a constrained minimum Steiner tree such that the delay between the source and each of the destinations does not violate the specified bound. Both of these problems are NP-complete. In this paper we review prior work on the multipoint routing problem and discuss the formulation of the unconstrained and constrained Steiner problems. We use the random neural network (RNN) to significantly improve the quality of trees found by the two existing best heuristics for finding Steiner trees - the minimum spanning tree heuristic and the average distance heuristic. We also develop a new heuristic for finding delay constrained Steiner trees. Experimental results are presented which show that the new heuristics improve significantly over existing ones.  相似文献

The union-closed sets conjecture asserts that in a finite non-trivial union-closed family of sets there has to be an element that belongs to at least half the sets. We show that this is equivalent to the conjecture that in a finite non-trivial graph there are two adjacent vertices each belonging to at most half of the maximal stable sets. In this graph formulation other special cases become natural. The conjecture is trivially true for non-bipartite graphs and we show that it holds also for the classes of chordal bipartite graphs, subcubic bipartite graphs, bipartite series-parallel graphs and bipartitioned circular interval graphs. We derive that the union-closed sets conjecture holds for all union-closed families being the union-closure of sets of size at most three.  相似文献

LetG=(V, E) be an undirected graph andA⊆V. We consider the problem of finding a minimum cost set of edges whose deletion separates every pair of nodes inA. We consider two extended formulations using both node and edge variables. An edge variable formulation has previously been considered for this problem (Chopra and Rao (1991), Cunningham (1991)). We show that the LP-relaxations of the extended formulations are stronger than the LP-relaxation of the edge variable formulation (even with an extra class of valid inequalities added). This is interesting because, while the LP-relaxations of the extended formulations can be solved in polynomial time, the LP-relaxation of the edge variable formulation cannot. We also give a class of valid inequalities for one of the extended formulations. Computational results using the extended formulations are performed.  相似文献

In this paper, we develop a simultaneous column-and-row generation algorithm that could be applied to a general class of large-scale linear programming problems. These problems typically arise in the context of linear programming formulations with exponentially many variables. The defining property for these formulations is a set of linking constraints, which are either too many to be included in the formulation directly, or the full set of linking constraints can only be identified, if all variables are generated explicitly. Due to this dependence between columns and rows, we refer to this class of linear programs as problems with column-dependent-rows. To solve these problems, we need to be able to generate both columns and rows on-the-fly within an efficient solution approach. We emphasize that the generated rows are structural constraints and distinguish our work from the branch-and-cut-and-price framework. We first characterize the underlying assumptions for the proposed column-and-row generation algorithm. These assumptions are general enough and cover all problems with column-dependent-rows studied in the literature up until now to the best of our knowledge. We then introduce in detail a set of pricing subproblems, which are used within the proposed column-and-row generation algorithm. This is followed by a formal discussion on the optimality of the algorithm. To illustrate our approach, the paper is concluded by applying the proposed framework to the multi-stage cutting stock and the quadratic set covering problems.  相似文献

In the admission control problem we are given a network and a set of connection requests, each of which is associated with a path, a time interval, a bandwidth requirement, and a weight. A feasible schedule is a set of connection requests such that at any given time, the total bandwidth requirement on every link in the network is at most 1. Our goal is to find a feasible schedule with maximum total weight. We consider the admission control problem in two simple topologies: the line and the tree. We present a 12c-approximation algorithm for the line topology, where c is the maximum number of requests on a link at some time instance. This result implies a 12c-approximation algorithm for the rectangle packing problem, where c is the maximum number of rectangles that cover simultaneously a point in the plane. We also present an O(logt)-approximation algorithm for the tree topology, where t is the size of the tree. We consider the loss minimization version of the admission control problem in which the goal is to minimize the weight of unscheduled requests. We present a c-approximation algorithm for loss minimization problem in the tree topology. This result is based on an approximation algorithm for a generalization of set cover, in which each element has a covering requirement, and each set has a covering potential. The approximation ratio of this algorithm is Δ, where Δ is the maximum number of sets that contain the same element.  相似文献

Frankl’s union-closed sets conjecture states that in every finite union-closed family of sets, not all empty, there is an element in the ground set contained in at least half of the sets. The conjecture has an equivalent formulation in terms of graphs: In every bipartite graph with least one edge, both colour classes contain a vertex belonging to at most half of the maximal stable sets.We prove that, for every fixed edge-probability, almost every random bipartite graph almost satisfies Frankl’s conjecture.  相似文献

Let G=(V,E) be a (directed) graph with vertex set V and edge (arc) set E. Given a set P of source-sink pairs of vertices of G, an important problem that arises in the computation of network reliability is the enumeration of minimal subsets of edges (arcs) that connect/disconnect all/at least one of the given source-sink pairs of P. For undirected graphs, we show that the enumeration problems for conjunctions of paths and disjunctions of cuts can be solved in incremental polynomial time. Furthermore, under the assumption that P consists of all pairs within a given vertex set, we also give incremental polynomial time algorithm for enumerating all minimal path disjunctions and cut conjunctions. For directed graphs, the enumeration problem for cut disjunction is known to be NP-complete. We extend this result to path conjunctions and path disjunctions, leaving open the complexity of the enumeration of cut conjunctions. Finally, we give a polynomial delay algorithm for enumerating all minimal sets of arcs connecting two given nodes s1 and s2 to, respectively, a given vertex t1, and each vertex of a given subset of vertices T2.  相似文献

Given a directed graph G(V,A), the p-Median problem consists of determining p nodes (the median nodes) minimizing the total distance from the other nodes of the graph. We present a Branch-and-Cut-and-Price algorithm yielding provably good solutions for instances with |V|≤3795. Key ingredients of the algorithm are a delayed column-and-row generation technique, exploiting the special structure of the formulation, to solve the LP-relaxation, and cutting planes to strengthen the formulation and limit the size of the enumeration tree.  相似文献

A desirable property of integer formulations is to consist of few inequalities having small coefficients. We show that these targets are conflicting by proving the existence of knapsack sets that need exponentially many inequalities or exponentially large coefficients in any integer formulation. Moreover, we show that there exist undirected graphs such that (in a natural model) every integer formulation of stable sets requires exponentially large coefficients if the number of non-trivial inequalities is bounded by a constant.  相似文献

We consider the problem of covering the edge set of an unweighted, undirected graph with the minimum number of connected bipartite subgraphs (where the subgraphs are not necessarily bicliques). We show that this is an NP-hard problem, provide lower bounds through an integer programming formulation, propose several constructive heuristics and a local search, and discuss computational results. Finally, we consider a constrained variant of the problem which we show to be NP-hard, and provide an integer programming formulation for the variant.  相似文献

We study a variant of the spanning tree problem where we require that, for a given connected graph, the spanning tree to be found has the minimum number of branch vertices (that is vertices of the tree whose degree is greater than two). We provide four different formulations of the problem and compare different relaxations of them, namely Lagrangian relaxation, continuous relaxation, mixed integer-continuous relaxation. We approach the solution of the Lagrangian dual both by means of a standard subgradient method and an ad-hoc finite ascent algorithm based on updating one multiplier at the time. We provide numerical result comparison of all the considered relaxations on a wide set of benchmark instances. A useful follow-up of tackling the Lagrangian dual is the possibility of getting a feasible solution for the original problem with no extra costs. We evaluate the quality of the resulting upper bound by comparison either with the optimal solution, whenever available, or with the feasible solution provided by some existing heuristic algorithms.  相似文献

The paper stems from an attempt to investigate a somewhat mysterious phenomenon: conditions which suffice for the existence of a “large” set satisfying certain conditions (e.g., a large independent set in a graph) often suffice (or at least are conjectured to suffice) for the existence of a covering of the ground set by few sets satisfying these conditions (in the example of independent sets in a graph this means that the graph has small chromatic number). We consider two conjectures of this type, on coloring by sets which are “two-way independent”, in the sense of belonging to a matroid and at the same time being independent in a graph sharing its ground set with the matroid. We prove these conjectures for matroids of rank 2. We also consider dual conjectures, on packing bases of a matroid, which are independent in a given graph.  相似文献
