Na adsorption at room temperature causes the Na/Si(1 1 1)3 × 1 surface with Na coverage of 1/3 monolayer (ML) to transit into the Na/Si(1 1 1)6 × 1 surface at 1/2 ML and sequentially into the Na/Si(1 1 1)3 × 1 surface at 2/3 ML. The phase transition was studied by Si 2p core-level photoemission spectroscopy. The detailed line shape analysis of the Si 2p core-level spectrum of the Na/Si(1 1 1)3 × 1 surface (2/3 ML) is presented and compared to the Na/Si(1 1 1)3 × 1 surface (1/3 ML) which is composed of Si honeycomb chain-channel structures. This suggests that as additional Na atoms form atomic chains resulting in the Na/Si(1 1 1)3 × 1 surface (2/3 ML), the inner atoms of the Si honeycomb chain-channel structure is buckled due to the additional Na atoms.  相似文献

Ab initio calculations, based on pseudopotentials and density functional theory, have been performed to investigate the effect of hydrogenation on the atomic geometries and the energetics of substitutional boron on the generic Si(0 0 1)-(1 × 2) surface. For a single B atom substitution corresponding to 0.5 ML coverage, we have considered two different sites: (i) the mixed Si-B dimer structure and (ii) boron substituting for the second-layer Si to form Si-B back-bond structure, which is energetically more favorable than the mixed Si-B dimer by 0.1 eV/dimer. However, when both of these cases are passivated by hydrogen atoms, the situation is reversed and the Si-B back-bond case becomes 0.1 eV/dimer higher in energy than the mixed Si-B dimer case. For the B incorporation corresponding to 1 ML coverage, among the substitutional cases, 100% interdiffusion into the third layer of Si and 50% interdiffusion into the second layer of Si are energetically similar and more favorable than the other cases that are considered. However, when the surface is passivated with hydrogen, the B atoms energetically prefer to stay at the third layer of the Si substrate.  相似文献

Ab initio calculations, based on pseudopotentials and density functional theory (DFT), have been performed to investigate the effect of hydrogenation on the electronic properties of P/Si(0 0 1)-(1 × 2) surface. In parallel with this, the electronic band structure of the hydrogenated and non-hydrogenated P/Si(0 0 1)-(1 × 2) surface have been calculated for half- and full-monolayer P. For the mixed Si-P dimer structure, we have identified two occupied and one unoccupied surface state, which correspond to 0.5 ML coverage of P. When this surface is terminated with H, we see that two occupied states completely disappeared and that one unoccupied state is shifted towards the conduction band. A similar calculations for the 1 ML coverage of P have been also carried out. It is seen that the unoccupied state C1 appeared in the P/Si(0 0 1)-(1 × 2) surface is passivated when this surface is terminated with the H atoms. To explain the nature of the surface states, we have also plotted the total and partial charge densities at the point of the Surface Brillouin Zone (SBZ).  相似文献

The electronic properties of thin metallic films of Pb, Ag, Au and In atoms deposited at 105 K on well defined metallic surface, i.e. Si(1 1 1)-(6 × 6)Au surface with 10 ML of annealed Pb, were investigated using four-point probe method in UHV condition. The structure of the substrate and deposited metals were monitored by the RHEED system. The electrical conductance, measured during the deposition of In and Pb atoms, shows the local minimum for the coverage equals about 0.3 ML whereas for Au and Ag atoms the conductance decreases during the first monolayer growth. For Au atoms the local maximum in the conductance was observed for the coverage about 0.55 ML, which can be connected with localized states. To describe theoretically the conductance behavior the tight-binding Hamiltonian and equation of motion for the Green’s function were used and good qualitative agreement was obtained.  相似文献

The atomic structure of Si(1 1 1)-√21 × √21-Ag surface, which is formed by the adsorption of small amount of Ag atoms on the Si(1 1 1)-√3 × √3-Ag surface, was determined by using reflection high-energy positron diffraction. The rocking curve measured from the Si(1 1 1)-√21 × √21-Ag surface was analyzed by means of the intensity calculations based on the dynamical diffraction theory. The adatom height of the extra Ag atoms from the underlying Ag layer was determined to be 0.53 Å with a coverage of 0.14 ML, which corresponds to three atoms in the √21 × √21 unit cell. From the pattern analyses, the most appropriate adsorption sites of the extra Ag atoms were proposed.  相似文献

The atomic structure of Cs atoms adsorbed on the Si(0 0 1)(2 × 1) surface has been investigated by coaxial impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy. When 0.5 ML of Cs atoms are adsorbed on Si(0 0 1) at room temperature, it is found that Cs atoms occupy a single absorption site on T3 with a height of 3.18 ± 0.05 Å from the second layer of Si(0 0 1)(2 × 1) surface, and the bond length between Cs and the nearest Si atoms is 3.71 ± 0.05 Å.  相似文献

From ab initio studies employing the pseudopotential method and the density functional scheme, we report on progressive changes in geometry, electronic states, and atomic orbitals on Si(0 0 1) by adsorption of different amounts of Bi coverage. For the 1/4 ML coverage, uncovered Si dimers retain the characteristic asymmetric (tilted) geometry of the clean Si(0 0 1) surface and the Si dimers underneath the Bi dimer have become symmetric (untilted) and elongated. For this geometry, occupied as well as unoccupied surface states are found to lie in the silicon band gap, both sets originating mainly from the uncovered and tilted silicon dimers. For the 1/2 ML coverage, there are still both occupied and unoccupied surface states in the band gap. The highest occupied state originates from an elaborate mixture of the pz orbital at the Si and Bi dimer atoms, and the lowest unoccupied state has a ppσ* antibonding character derived from the Bi dimer atoms. For 1 ML coverage, there are no surface states in the fundamental bulk band gap. The highest occupied and the lowest unoccupied states, lying close to band edges, show a linear combination of the pz orbitals and ppσ* antibonding orbital characters, respectively, derived from the Bi dimer atoms.  相似文献

Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES), Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) and Photoelectron Yield Spectroscopy (PYS) measurements have been used to monitor the interaction of gold (Au) deposits on InSe/Si(1 1 1) substrate. Au has been sequentially deposed under ultra-high vacuum onto 40 Å-thick film of layered semiconductor InSe which is epitaxially grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on a Si(1 1 1)1 × 1-H substrate and kept at room temperature. Au coverage varies from 0.5 monolayer to 20 monolayers (ML) (in terms of InSe atomic surface plane: 1 ML = 7.2 1014 at/cm2) which is corresponding to 1.30 Å of Au-metal. The Au/InSe/Si(1 1 1) system was characterized as function of Au deposit, we noticed an interaction at room temperature starts as an apparent intercalation process until 5 ML. Beyond this dose Au islands begin to form on the sample surface without interaction with InSe substrate, thus the interface is far from to be a simple junction Au-InSe.  相似文献

It has been a common belief that the one-dimensional structures observed by STM at low coverage of Pb on Si(1 0 0) are buckled Pb-Pb dimer chains. However, using first-principles density functional calculations, we found that it is energetically favorable for Pb adatoms to intermix with Si atoms to form mixed dimer chains on Si(1 0 0), instead of Pb-Pb dimer chains as assumed in previous studies. Up to a Pb coverage of 0.125 ML, mixed PbSi dimer chain is 0.19 eV per Pb atom lower in energy than Pb dimer chain.  相似文献

This study investigates ultra-thin potassium chloride (KCl) films on the Si(1 0 0)-2 × 1 surfaces at near room temperature. The atomic structure and growth mode of this ionic solid film on the covalent bonded semiconductor surface is examined by synchrotron radiation core level photoemission, scanning tunneling microscopy and ab initio calculations. The Si 2p, K 3p and Cl 2p core level spectra together indicate that adsorbed KCl molecules at submonolayer coverage partially dissociate and that KCl overlayers above one monolayer (ML) have similar features in the valance band density of states as those of the bulk KCl crystal. STM results reveal a novel c(4 × 4) structure at 1 ML coverage. Ab initio calculations show that a model that comprises a periodic pyramidal geometry is consistent with experimental results.  相似文献

The Au-induced changes in the surface morphology of a Si(1 1 1) sample miscut 8° towards have been measured using room temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction. Au coverages of less than 0.06 ML up to 0.43 ML have been investigated. In all cases Au adsorption produces dramatic changes in surface morphology. The Au-induced surface exhibits nanofacets with orientations that depend critically on the amount of Au deposited. Below 0.32 ML, the restructured surface always includes (7 7 5)-Au nanofacets suggesting that the (7 7 5)-Au facet is energetically preferred on this surface. The (7 7 5)-Au facet is oriented 8.5° from [1 1 1] towards and is characterized by 1-d chains spaced 21.3 Å apart that run along the direction. By maximizing the surface area of the (7 7 5) facets and optimizing the associated diffraction pattern we determine that the (7 7 5)-Au reconstruction is optimized at 0.24 ML and corresponds to a stoichiometry of 1.5 Au atoms per 1 × 1 unit cell. We believe that the local Au coverage on the (7 7 5) facet is 0.24 ML, and that the deficit/extra of Au at any particular coverage is accommodated by non-(7 7 5) facets. For example at 0.06 ML the regions of step bunching observed on the clean surface are eliminated and Au-induced (7 7 5) and Au-free (1 1 1)7 × 7 facets are already visible. Up to 0.18 ML the non-(7 7 5) facet is Au free. Beyond 0.32 ML, the (7 7 5)-Au reconstruction is no longer stable and the extra Au is accommodated by the formation of higher angle facets with smaller chain spacings.  相似文献

The epitaxial growth of Pd adlayers electrochemically deposited onto Au(1 0 0) has been studied by LEED, RHEED and AES. For the first 6 ML, the Pd deposits grow pseudomorphically on Au(1 0 0) with a lateral expansion of 4.5% with respect to bulk Pd. The strain in the expanded commensurate (1 × 1) Pd layers on Au(1 0 0) begins to be relieved at the Pd coverage between 6 and 9 ML range by formation of a compressed Pd film with respect to Au(1 0 0) surface and the compression increases continuously with thickness. At ca. 20 ML Pd the lattice constant of the film approaches to the bulk Pd and three-dimensional Pd islands develop since around 30 ML coverage. No superstructure due to the Pd-Au surface alloy can be found for coverages from monolayer up to 30 ML Pd on Au(1 0 0). A c(2 × 2) phase has been observed on the Pd-deposited Au(1 0 0) electrodes, which is ascribed to an ordered Cl adlayers adsorbed on Pd adlayers rather than a Pd-Au surface alloy.  相似文献

The adsorption and desorption of sulphur on the clean reconstructed Au(1 1 0)-(1 × 2) surface has been studied by low energy electron diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption. The results obtained show a complex behaviour of the S/Au(1 1 0) system during sulphur desorption at different temperatures. Two structures of the stable ordered sulphur overlayer on the Au(1 1 0) surface, p(4 × 2) and c(4 × 4), were found after annealing the S/Au(1 1 0) system at 630 K and 463 K, respectively. The corresponding sulphur coverage for these overlayers was estimated by AES signal intensity analysis of the Au NOO and S LMM Auger lines to be equal to 0.13 ML and 0.2 ML, respectively. Both sulphur structures appear after removing an excess of sulphur, which mainly desorbs at 358 K as determined from TPD spectra. Furthermore, it was not possible to produce the lower coverage p(4 × 2) sulphur structure by annealing the c(4 × 4) surface. In the case of the p(4 × 2) S overlayer on the Au(1 1 0)-(1 × 2) surface it is proposed that the sulphur is attached to “missing row” sites only. The c(4 × 4) S overlayer arises via desorption of S2 molecules that are formed on the surface due to mobility of sulphur atoms after a prolonged anneal.  相似文献

Methanethiol adsorbed on Ru(0 0 0 1)-p(2 × 2)O has been studied by TPD and XPS. The dissociation of methanethiol to methylthiolate and hydrogen at 90 K is evidenced by the observation of hydroxyl and water. The saturation coverage of methylthiolate is ∼0.15 ML, measured by both XPS and TPD. A detailed analysis suggests that only the hcp-hollow sites have been occupied. Upon annealing the surface, water and hydroxyl desorb from the surface at ∼210 K. Methylthiolate decomposes to methyl radical and atomic sulphur via C-S cleavage between 350 and 450 K. Some methyl radicals (0.05 ML) have been transferred to Ru atoms before they decompose to carbon and hydrogen. The rest of methyl radicals desorb as gaseous phase. No evidence for the transfer of methyl radical to surface oxygen has been found.  相似文献

Density functional theory calculations have been performed to determine the adsorption site of carbon at the Si(1 1 1):As and Si(1 1 1):H surfaces at different coverages. The As- and H-passivated surfaces were simulated by replacing the topmost Si layer by As or by saturating the Si dangling bonds with hydrogen atoms, respectively. Different high symmetry sites were considered. Carbon was placed successively in the fourfold (T4) or threefold coordinated (H3), the ontop (T1) sites or substituted for a Si atom in the S5 position located underneath the Si adatom in the T4 site. We found that the preferred carbon adsorption site depends on the coverage of the passivated surfaces. At low coverages i.e. at 1/16 ML and 1/3 ML, it prefers a distorted T4 position whereas at 1 ML, it occupies an H3 site. This contrasts with the clean surface where the most energetically favored site is the S5 at all coverages. Carbon adsorption induces a significant change in the structural geometry of the surface atoms, leading to a charge re-arrangement in the surface layers.  相似文献

Using scanning tunneling microscopy we study the topographic properties of Ag structure on the Au induced, highly ordered Si(5 5 7) surface. Topography measurements show that a small amount of Ag (0.25 ML) deposited on that surface leads to considerable modifications of the one-dimensional structure induced by Au atoms. In particular, we observe two different chains on each terrace, which are identified as Si adatoms and Ag chain structures. The STM topography of those chains strongly depends on the bias voltage, indicating an important role of electronic effects in this system.  相似文献

Early stages of rare-earth metal (Yb and Eu) growth on a vicinal, single-domain Si(1 0 0)2 × 1 surface have been studied in the coverage range of 0.1-0.3 monolayer (ML) by low energy electron diffraction, scanning tunneling microscopy, and synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy. We show that Yb induces the 2 × 3 periodicity in the whole range of coverage studied. The 2 × 3 reconstruction coexists with the local 3 × 2/4 × 2 structure at about 0.2 ML of Yb. In contrast, Eu forms the 3 × 2 periodicity at 0.1-0.2 ML, whereas this structure is converted into the 2 × 3 phase at about 0.3 ML. The atomic arrangement and electronic properties of these reconstructions and the adsorbate-mediated modification of surface morphology are investigated.  相似文献

The consequences of Ge deposition on Br-terminated Si(1 0 0) were studied with scanning tunneling microscopy at ambient temperature after annealing at 650 K. One monolayer of Br was sufficient to prevent the formation of Ge huts beyond the critical thickness of 3 ML. This is possible because Br acts as a surfactant whose presence lowered the diffusivity of Ge adatoms. Hindered mobility was manifest at low coverage through the formation of short Ge chains. Further deposition resulted in the extension and connection of the Ge chains and gave rise to the buildup of incomplete layers. The deposition of 7 ML of Ge resulted in a rough surface characterized by irregularly shaped clusters. A short 800 K anneal desorbed the Br and allowed Ge atoms to reorganize into the more energetically favorable “hut” structures produced by conventional Ge overlayer growth on Si(1 0 0).  相似文献

Growth modes and electronic properties were analyzed for Au nano-particles grown on stoichiometric and reduced TiO2(1 1 0) substrates by medium energy ion scattering (MEIS) and photoelectron spectroscopy(PES) using synchrotron-radiation-light. Initially, two-dimensional islands (2D) with a height of one and two atomic layers grow and higher coverage increases the islands height to form three-dimensional (3D) islands for the stoichiometric TiO2(1 1 0) substrate. In contrast, 3D islands start to grow from initial stage with a small Au coverage (?0.1 ML, 1 ML = 1.39 × 1015  atoms/cm2: Au(1 1 1)) probably due to O-vacancies acting as a nucleation site. Above 0.7 ML, all the islands become 3D ones taking a shape of a partial sphere and the Au clusters change to metal for both substrates. We observed the Au 4f and Ti 3p core level shifts together with the valence band spectra. The Ti 3p peak for the O-deficient surface shifts to higher binding energy by 0.25 ± 0.05 eV compared to that for the stoichiometric surface, indicating downward band bending by an electron charge transfer from an O-vacancy induced surface state band to n-type TiO2 substrate. Higher binding energy shifts of Au 4f peaks observed for both substrates reveal an electron charge transfer from Au to TiO2 substrates. The work functions of Au nano-particles supported on the stoichiometric and reduced TiO2 substrates were also determined as a function of Au coverage and explained clearly by the above surface and interface dipoles.  相似文献

The surface atomic structure of Bi on Au(1 1 1) is studied with scanning tunneling microscopy. At about 0.5 monolayer of Bi, a well-ordered 6 × 6 atomic structure is observed. The structure has three notable features: corner holes, Bi adatoms, and stacking faults, very similar to a semiconductor surface of Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7. Out of 18 Bi surface atoms in a unit cell, six atoms are at hollow sites and are adatoms, and another six atoms are near-bridge sites. The last six atoms surround corner holes and are lower than other surface atoms by about 0.2 Å. A possible atomic model is proposed based on our observation.  相似文献
