Two different growth modes of manganese silicide are observed on Si(1 0 0) with scanning tunneling microscopy. 1.0 and 1.5 monolayer Mn are deposited at room temperature on the Si(1 0 0)-(2 × 1) substrate. The as-grown Mn film is unstructured. Annealing temperatures between room temperature and 450 °C lead to small unstructured clusters of Mn or MnxSiy. Upon annealing at 450 °C and 480 °C, Mn reacts chemically with the Si substrate and forms silicide islands. The dimer rows of the substrate become visible again. Two distinct island shapes are found and identified as MnSi and Mn5Si3.  相似文献

We studied the low temperature (T ? 130 K) growth of Ag on Si(0 0 1) and Si(1 1 1) flat surfaces prepared by Si homo epitaxy with the aim to achieve thin metallic films. The band structure and morphology of the Ag overlayers have been investigated by means of XPS, UPS, LEED, STM and STS. Surprisingly a (√3 × √3)R30° LEED structure for Ag films has been observed after deposition of 2-6 ML Ag onto a Si(1 1 1)(√3 × √3)R30°Ag surface at low temperatures. XPS investigations showed that these films are solid, and UPS measurements indicate that they are metallic. However, after closer STM studies we found that these films consists of sharp Ag islands and (√3 × √3)R30°Ag flat terraces in between. On Si(0 0 1) the low-temperature deposition yields an epitaxial growth of Ag on clean Si(0 0 1)-2 × 1 with a twinned Ag(1 1 1) structure at coverage’s as low as 10 ML. Furthermore the conductivity of few monolayer Ag films on Si(1 0 0) surfaces has been studied as a function of temperature (40-300 K).  相似文献

The Au silicide islands have been fabricated by additional deposition of Au on the prepared surface at 270 °C where the Si islands of magic sizes were formed on the Si(1 1 1)-(7 × 7) dimer-adatom-stacking fault substrate. The surface structure on the Au silicide islands shows the Au/Si(1 1 1)-√3 × √3 reconstructed structure although the substrate remains 7 × 7 DAS structure. The size of the Au silicide islands depends on the size distribution of the preformed Si islands, because the initial size and shape of the Si islands play important roles in the formation of the Au silicide island. We have achieved the fabrication of the Au silicide islands of about the same size (∼5 nm) and the same shape by controlling the initial Si growth and the additional Au growth conditions.  相似文献

The first stages of acetylene reaction with the Si(1 1 1)7 × 7 reconstructed surface kept at 600 °C are studied by recording scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images during substrate exposure at a C2H2 pressure of 2 × 10−4 Pa (2 × 10−2 mbar). We observed the progressive substitution of the 7 × 7 reconstruction with a carbon induced Si(1 1 1)√3×√3R30° reconstruction characterized by an atomic distance of 0.75 ± 0.02 nm, very close to that of the silicon 7 × 7 adatoms. This means that a carbon enrichment of the silicon outermost layers occurs giving rise to the formation of a Si-C phase different from the √3×√3R30° reconstruction typical of Si terminated hexagonal SiC(0 0 0 1) surface with an atomic distance of 0.53 nm. To explain STM images, we propose a reconstruction model which involves carbon atoms in T4 and/or S5 sites, as occurring for B doped Si(1 1 1) surface. Step edges and areas around the silicon surface defects are the first regions involved in the reaction process, which spreads from the upper part of the step edges throughout the terraces. Step edges therefore, progressively flakes and this mechanism leads, for the highest exposures, to the formation of large inlets which makes completely irregular the straight edge typical of the Si(1 1 1)7 × 7 terraces. These observations indicate that there occurs an atomic diffusion like that driving the meandering effect. Finally, the formation of a few crystallites is shown also at the lowest acetylene exposures. This is the first STM experiment showing the possibility to have carbon incorporation in a Si(1 1 1) matrix for higher amounts than expected, at least up to 1/6 of silicon atomic layer.  相似文献

The (2 × n) superstructure of Si(0 0 1) consists of elongated (2 × 1) reconstructed stripes separated by a dimer-vacancy line every few nanometers, thus offering a means to obtain a nanopattered Si(0 0 1) surface. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) investigations of Si(0 0 1) substrates that were deoxidized at 880-920 °C reveal that the formation of the (2 × n) depends strongly on the Si coverage of the topmost surface layer. It forms only in a narrow coverage window ranging from 0.6 to 0.8 ML. Systematic Monte Carlo simulations by an algorithm that combines the diffusion of monomers and dimers with the simultaneous deposition of Si onto the Si(0 0 1) surface, corroborate the STM results and suggest Si deposition as a viable alternative for introducing dimer vacancies in a well-defined manner.  相似文献

The growth behavior of Ca on Si(0 0 1) has been studied with scanning tunneling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction. During the growth of the first atomic layer at elevated temperature, Ca induces several different ordered surface reconstructions. In order of ascending metal content, they are: a 2 × n (n = 3, 4, 5) phase that has limited long range order, a 2 × 6 striped phase, and a 1 × 3 phase. The 1 × 3 phase covers the entire surface at and beyond the point where Ca silicide island growth starts.  相似文献

Injection of tunneling electrons and holes from the probe tips of a scanning tunneling microscope was found to enhance the hopping motion of Cl atoms between neighboring dangling-bond sites of Si dimers on Si(1 0 0)-(2 × 1) surfaces, featured by the rate of hopping linearly dependent on the injection current. The hopping rate formed peaks at sample biases of VS∼+1.25 and −0.85 V, which agree with the peaks in the local density of states spectrum measured by scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The Cl hopping was enhanced at Cl-adsorbed sites even remote from the injection point. The Cl hopping by hole injection was more efficiently enhanced by sweeping the tip along the Si dimer row than by tip-sweeping along the perpendicular direction. Such anisotropy, on the other hand, was insignificant in the electron injection case. All of these findings can be interpreted by the model that the holes injected primarily into a surface band originated from the dangling bonds of Si dimers propagate quite anisotropically along the surface, and become localized at Cl sites somehow to destabilize the Si-Cl bonds causing hopping of the Cl atoms. The electrons injected into a bulk band propagate in an isotropic manner and then get resonantly trapped at Si-Cl antibonding orbitals, resulting in bond destabilization and hopping of the Cl atoms.  相似文献

The self-assembly of 1-alkanethiols, CH3(CH2)n−1SH (n=2-16), on Ag(1 1 1) film initially covered with a native oxide monolayer and that on a chloride-covered Ag(1 1 1) were comparatively studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy. The native oxide monolayer was readily substituted completely by thiolates irrespective of chain length, leading to a dense (√7×√7)R19.1° monolayer for n<3, or a distorted (√7×√7)R19.1° structure for n>3 accompanied by distinct island and fine domain structures previously reported by other groups. In contrast, the chloride-to-thiolate conversion was far from complete for long alkanethiols (n?8), and at sufficiently high conversion temperature (>50 °C), we found a highly stable mixed thiolate-chloride monolayer with a well-defined 2:1 S/Cl atomic ratio, suggesting the occurrence of a mixed (√7×√7)R19.1° adlayer ordering. The combined effects of substrate-molecule and intermolecular interactions behind these contrastive phenomena are discussed.  相似文献

We describe the electrochemical preparation of an ultrathin copper sulfide film on Au(1 1 1) and its structural characterization by in situ STM. The first step, underpotential deposition of a Cu submonolayer from CuSO4/H2SO4 solution, is followed by two electrolyte exchanges for (i) Cu-free (blank) H2SO4 solution and (ii) NaOH/Na2S solution. The well-known (√3 × √3)R30° structure of the upd Cu layer is stable in the blank electrolyte for at least 2 h. After exposure to bisulfide, the Cu layer contracts and forms two-dimensional islands of two distinct ordered surface phases, i.e. a rectangular and, at higher potentials, a hexagonal phase, with Cu-free Au(1 1 1) regions between them, the latter exhibiting the characteristic (√3 × √3)R30°-S adlayer structure. Potential changes lead to a complex phase behaviour including HS ? Sx oxidation/reduction and, at strongly anodic potentials, dissolution of the Cu adlayer.  相似文献

We have performed the structural and statistical analysis of Yb/Si(1 1 1) and Eu/Si(1 1 1) surfaces in the submonolayer regime utilizing low-energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The almost identical series of one-dimensional chain structures (e.g., 3 × 2/3 × 1, 5 × 1, 7 × 1, 9 × 1, and 2 × 1 phases) are found in order of increasing metal coverage for both adsorbed systems, however, only the Eu/Si system reveals the ‘√3’-like reconstruction before the 2 × 1 endpoint phase. The atomic models of chain structures are proposed and discussed. In particular, our results suggest the odd-order n×1 (n=5,7,9,…) intermediate reconstructions to incorporate the Seiwatz chains and honeycomb chains with the proportion of m:1, where . The statistical analysis of STM images is carried out to examine the correlation of atomic rows on Eu/Si and Yb/Si surfaces. It is found that Eu stabilizes more ordered row configuration compared to Yb, which can be explained in terms of indirect electronic interaction of atomic chains or/and different magnetic properties of adsorbed species.  相似文献

A study of surface and interface properties of reconstructed Au-SiC(0 0 0 1) surfaces is reported. Two reconstructions were prepared on SiC(0 0 0 1), a √3 × √3R30° and a Si-rich 3 × 3, before Au deposition and subsequent annealing at different temperatures. For the Si-rich 3 × 3 surface the existence of three stable reconstructions 2√3 × 2√3R30°, 3 × 3 and 5 × 5 are revealed after deposition of Au layers, 4-8 Å thick, and annealing at progressively higher temperatures between 500 and 950 °C. For the 2√3 surface two surface shifted Si 2p components are revealed and the Au 4f spectra clearly indicate silicide formation. The variation in relative intensity for the different core level components with photon energy suggests formation of an ordered silicide layer with some excess Si on top. Similar core level spectra and variations in relative intensity with photon energy are obtained for the 3 × 3 and 5 × 5 phases but the amount of excess Si on top is observed to be smaller and an additional weak Si 2p component becomes discernable. For the √3 surface the evolution of the core level spectra after Au deposition and annealing is shown to be distinctly different than for the Si-rich 3 × 3 surface and only one stable reconstruction, a 3 × 3 phase, is observed at similar annealing temperatures.  相似文献

Formation of the beryllium (Be) submonolayers on the Si(1 1 1)7 × 7 surface has been studied using scanning tunneling microscopy. It has been found that Be interaction with Si(1 1 1) at 500-700 °C results in a self-assembly formation of the four various types of the highly-ordered nanostructure arrays. The nanostructure arrays develop on top of the “soft” silicide layer, which period and orientation alter with the nanostructure growth: the shorter the nanostructure period, the larger the rotation angle. The main structural parameters of the silicide layer and nanostructure arrays have been established.  相似文献

We have studied the scaling behavior of two-dimensional island density during submonolayer growth of CaF2 on vicinal Si(1 1 1) surfaces using scanning tunneling microscopy. We have analyzed the morphology of the Si(1 1 1) surfaces where CaF2 partial monolayers with coverages of about 0.1 monolayer are deposited at ∼600 °C. The number density of terrace nucleated islands increases with substrate terrace width l as ∼l4 in a low island density regime. This scaling behavior is consistent with predictions for the case of the irreversible growth of islands.  相似文献

The c(5√2 × √2)R45°-Pb/Cu(1 0 0) surface phase is investigated by means of angle resolved ultraviolet photoemission and low energy electron diffraction in the temperature range between 300 and 550 K. We identify and characterize a temperature-induced surface phase transition at 440 K from the room temperature c(5√2 × √2) R45° phase to a (√2 × √2)R45° structure with split superstructure spots. The phase transition is fully reversible and takes place before the two-dimensional melting of the structure at 520 K. The electronic structure of the split (√2 × √2)R45° phase is characterized by a metallic free-electron like surface band. This surface band is backfolded with c(5√2 × √2)R45° periodicity phase at room temperature, giving rise to a surface band gap at the Fermi energy. We propose that a gain in electronic energy explains in part the stability of the c(5√2 × √2)R45° phase.  相似文献

The adsorption of S2 on the Si(1 1 1)-(7 × 7) surface and the interaction of copper and sulfur on this sulfur-terminated Si(1 1 1) surface have been studied using synchrotron irradiation photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy. The adsorption of S2 at room temperature results in the passivation of silicon dangling bonds of Si(1 1 1)-(7 × 7) surface. Excessive sulfur forms Sn species on the surface. Copper atoms deposited at room temperature directly interact with S-adatoms through the formations of Cu-S bonds. Upon annealing the sample at 300 °C, CuSx nanocrystals were produced on the sulfur-terminated Si(1 1 1) surface.  相似文献

Scanning tunneling microscopy has been used to study the ordering of pentacene (C22H14) molecules on the Ag/Si(1 1 1)-(√3×√3)R30° surface at room temperature. Two solid phases, S1 and S2, are observed at coverages of ∼0.35 monolayer (ML) and ∼1.0 ML respectively. It is shown that the solid phase S1 has a high-order commensurate lattice, Ag/Si(1 1 1)-(25 × 25)-pentacene, containing 75 molecules. The structure of this phase is determined from STM measurements at very low coverages where it is possible to image both the pentacene molecules and the structure of the Ag/Si(1 1 1) substrate. Two adsorption sites are identified, a three-fold hollow site at the centre of a Ag-trimer (CA-site) and a six-fold hollow site at the centre of the hexagonal arrangement of silver atoms (CB-site). A higher pentacene coverage of ∼1 ML lead to a molecular reorganization and forms a new commensurate structure Ag/Si(1 1 1)-(2 × 3)-pentacene, containing two molecules per unit cell. Because low energy electron diffraction patterns were not obtainable for this system, the structure of this second phase is determined by using the bias voltage as a tunable parameter to “focus” on either the molecular film or on the substrate. In this phase adsorption takes place exclusively on the Ag-trimer (CA) site and the CB-site is lost because of strong lateral molecule-molecule interactions. The role of competition between intermolecular and molecule-substrate interactions and the nature of the adsorption sites in determining the structure of the pentacene layers is discussed.  相似文献

We have investigated a BC3 covered NbB2(0 0 0 1) surface using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). The STM images reveal characteristic features of a Moiré pattern reflecting an incommensurate relation of the BC3 sheet with the substrate: bright protrusions with the periodicity of the substrate lattice are modulated in intensity with the periodicity of the BC3 lattice. As a result, the surface exhibits nm-scale patchy regions with either the √3 × √3 or the 1 × 1 structure of the substrate. The two-dimensional Fourier transformation pattern of the STM image is consistent with the LEED pattern proving the epitaxial and incommensurate relationship between BC3 surface sheet and substrate. No feature of a predicted superconducting gap was found in STS spectra measured at 5 K.  相似文献

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been used to study the various possible structures of adsorbed Bi on the Cu(1 0 0) surface, after equilibration at a temperature of 520 K. All of the structures previously identified by X-ray diffraction (lattice gas, c(2 × 2), c(9√2 × √2)R45°, and p(10 × 10), in order of increasing Bi-coverage) were found to be present on a single sample produced by diffusing Bi onto the Cu(1 0 0) surface from a 3-d source. By investigating the possible coexistence of various pairs of phases, it was demonstrated that the c(2 × 2) phase transforms to the c(9√2 × √2)R45° phase by a first order transition, whereas the transition from c(9√2 × √2)R45° to p(10 × 10) is continuous. In addition, the structure of surface steps was studied as a function of Bi-coverage. The results showed that the presence of Bi changes the nature of the step-step interactions at the Cu(1 0 0) surface from repulsive to attractive. The attractive step-step interactions transform any small deviations from the nominal (1 0 0) orientation of the Cu substrate into (3 1 0) microfacets. When compared with the known equilibrium crystal shape (ECS) of Bi-saturated Cu, the observed microfaceting may imply that the ECS of Cu-Bi alloys is temperature dependent.  相似文献

The Si(0 0 1) surface morphology during ion sputtering at elevated temperatures and solid phase epitaxy (SPE) following ion sputtering at room temperature has been investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy. Two types of antiphase boundaries form on Si(0 0 1) surfaces during ion sputtering and SPE. One type of antiphase boundary, the AP2 antiphase boundary, contributes to the surface roughening. AP2 antiphase boundaries are stable up to 700 °C, and ion sputtering and SPE performed at 700 °C result in atomically flat Si(0 0 1) surfaces.  相似文献

The adsorption, diffusion and ordering of hydrogen on Pd(1 1 1) was studied by scanning tunneling microscopy in the temperature range of 37-90 K. At low coverage isolated hydrogen atoms were observed. They formed √3×√3-1H islands as the coverage increased. Above 1/3 monolayer (ML) coverage areas of a new phase with √3×√3-2H structure were formed, with both structures coexisting between 1/3 and 2/3 ML. Finally a 1 × 1 structure was formed after high exposures of hydrogen above 50 K, with a coverage close to 1 ML. Atomically resolved images reveal that H binds to fcc hollow sites.  相似文献
