A new monomer, N,N′‐bis(4‐phenoxybenzoyl)‐p‐phenylenediamine (BPBPPD), was prepared by the condensation of p‐phenylenediamine with 4‐phenoxybenzoyl chloride in N,N‐dimethylacetamide (DMAc). Novel aromatic poly(ether amide amide ether ketone ketone)s (PEAAEKKs) were synthesized by electrophilic Friedel–Crafts solution copolycondensation of BPBPPD with a mixture of terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) and isophthaloyl chloride (IPC), over a wide range of TPC/IPC molar ratios, in the presence of anhydrous aluminum chloride and N‐methylpyrrolidone (NMP) in 1,2‐dichloroethane (DCE). The influences of reaction conditions on the preparation of polymers were examined. The polymers obtained were characterized by different physico–chemical techniques such as FT‐IR, Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). The polymers with 70–100 mol% IPC are semicrystalline and have remarkably increased Tgs over commercially available poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) and poly(ether ketone ketone) (PEKK) due to the incorporation of amide groups in the main chain. The polymers with 70–80 mol% IPC had not only high Tgs of 209–213°C, but also moderate Tms of 339–348°C, which are suitable for melt processing. The polymers with 70–80 mol% IPC had tensile strengths of 107.5–109.8 MPa, Young's moduli of 2.53–2.69 GPa, and elongations at break of 9–11% and exhibited high thermal stability and good resistance to organic solvents. A new monomer, 4,4′‐bis(4‐phenoxybenzoyl)diphenyl(BPOBDP), was synthesized via a two‐step synthetic procedure. A series of novel poly(ether sulfone ether ketone ketone)/poly(ether ketone diphenyl ketone ether ketone ketone) copolymers were prepared by electrophilic Friedel–Crafts solution copolycondensation of isophthaloyl chloride (IPC) with a mixture of 4,4′‐diphenoxydiphenylsulfone (DPODPS) and 4,4′‐bis(4‐phenoxybenzoyl)diphenyl (BPOBDP), in the presence of anhydrous aluminum chloride and N‐methylpyrrolidone (NMP) in 1,2‐dichloroethane (DCE). The copolymers with 10–50 mol% DPODPS are semicrystalline and have remarkably increased Tgs over commercially available PEEK and PEKK. The copolymers with 40–50 mol% DPODPS had not only high Tgs of 170–172°C, but also moderate Tms of 326–333°C, which are extremely suitable for melt processing. These copolymers have tensile strengths of 96.5–108.1 MPa, Young's moduli of 1.98–3.05 GPa, and elongations at break of 13–26% and exhibit excellent thermal stability and good resistance to acidity, alkali, and common organic solvents. A series of poly(amide–imide)s IIIa–m containing flexible isopropylidene and ether groups in the backbone were synthesized by the direct polycondensation of 4,4′‐[1,4‐phenylenebis(isopropylidene‐1,4‐phenyleneoxy)]dianiline (PIDA) with various bis(trimellitimide)s IIa–m in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP) using triphenyl phosphite and pyridine as condensing agents. The resulting poly(amide–imide)s had inherent viscosities in the range of 0.80–1.36 dL/g. Except for those from the bis(trimellitimide)s of p‐phenylenediamine and benzidine, all the polymers could be cast from DMAc into transparent and tough films. They exhibited excellent solubility in polar solvents. The 10% weight loss temperatures of the polymers in air and in nitrogen were all above 495°C, and their Tg values were in the range of 201–252°C. Some properties of poly(amide–imide)s III were compared with those of the corresponding poly(amide–imide)s V prepared from the bis(trimellitimide) of diamine PIDA and various aromatic diamines. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of poly(o‐hydroxy amide)s having both ether and sulfone linkages in the main chain were synthesized via the low‐temperature solution polycondensation of 4,4′‐[sulfonylbis(1,4‐phenylene)dioxy]dibenzoyl chloride and 4,4′‐[sulfonylbis(2,6‐dimethyl‐1,4‐phenylene)dioxy]dibenzoyl chloride with three bis(o‐aminophenol)s including 4,4′‐diamino‐3,3′‐dihydroxybiphenyl, 3,3′‐diamino‐4,4′‐dihydroxybiphenyl, and 2,2‐bis(3‐diamino‐4‐hydroxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane. Subsequent thermal cyclodehydration of the poly(o‐hydroxy amide)s afforded polyethersulfone benzoxazoles. Most of the poly(o‐hydroxy amide)s were soluble in polar organic solvents such as N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone; however, the polybenzoxazoles without the hexafluoroisopropylidene group were organic‐insoluble. The polybenzoxazoles exhibited glass‐transition temperatures (Tg) in the range of 219–282 °C by DSC and softening temperatures (Ts) of 242–320 °C by thermomechanical analysis. Thermogravimetric analyses indicated that most polybenzoxazoles were stable up to 450 °C in air or nitrogen. The 10% weight loss temperatures were recorded in the ranges of 474–593 °C in air and 478–643 °C in nitrogen. The methyl‐substituted polybenzoxazoles had higher Tg's but lower Ts's and initial decomposition temperatures compared with the corresponding unsubstituted polybenzoxazoles. For a comparative purpose, the synthesis and characterization of a series of sulfonyl polybenzoxazoles without the ether group that derived from 4,4′‐sulfonyldibenzoyl chloride and bis(o‐aminophenol)s were also reported. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The title molecule, C40H32O6, possesses crystallographically imposed twofold symmetry, with the central two C atoms of the naphthalene unit sited on the rotation axis. The two 4‐phenoxybenzoyl groups in the molecule are twisted away from the attached naphthalene unit, with a torsion angle of 66.76 (15)° between the naphthalene unit and the carbonyl group (C—C—C=O), and are oriented in mutually opposing directions (anti orientation). There is an apparent difference in the conformations of the 4‐phenoxybenzoyl groups at the 1‐ and 8‐positions of the naphthalene ring between the title molecule and its methoxy‐bearing homologue [Hijikata et al. (2010). Acta Cryst. E 66 , o2902–o2903]. Whilst the 4‐phenoxybenzoyl groups in 2,7‐diisopropoxy‐1,8‐bis(4‐phenoxybenzoyl)naphthalene [Yoshiwaka et al. (2013). Acta Cryst. E 69 , o242] are situated in the same anti orientation as the title molecule, those of 2,7‐dimethoxy‐1,8‐bis(4‐phenoxybenzoyl)naphthalene are oriented in the same direction with respect to the naphthalene ring system, i.e. in a syn orientation.  相似文献

Four series of poly(o-hydroxy amide)s were prepared by the low-temperature solution polycondensation of the bis(ether benzoyl chloride)s extended from hydroquinone and its methyl-, tert-butyl-, or phenyl-substituted derivatives with three bis(o-aminophenol)s. Most of the poly(o-hydroxy amide)s displayed an amorphous nature, were readily soluble in various polar solvents such as N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc), and could be solution-cast into flexible and tough films. These poly(o-hydroxy amide)s had glass transition temperatures (Tg) in the range of 152–185°C and could be thermally cyclodehydrated into the corresponding polybenzoxazoles approximately in the region of 200–400°C, as evidenced by the DSC thermograms. The thermally converted benzoxazole polymers exhibited Tgs in the range of 215–247°C and did not show significant weight loss before 500°C either in nitrogen or in air. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 4,4′‐(1,4‐Phenylenedioxy)dibenzoic acid as well as the 2‐methyl‐, 2‐tert‐butyl‐, or 2‐phenyl‐substituted derivatives of this dicarboxylic acid were synthesized in two main steps from p‐fluorobenzonitrile and hydroquinone or its methyl‐, tert‐butyl‐, or phenyl‐substituted derivatives. Polyhydrazides and poly(amide–hydrazide)s were prepared from these bis(ether benzoic acid)s or their diacyl chlorides with terephthalic dihydrazide, isophthalic dihydrazide, or p‐aminobenzoyl hydrazide by means of the phosphorylation reaction or low‐temperature solution polycondensation. Most of the hydrazide polymers and copolymers are amorphous and readily soluble in various polar solvents such as N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP) and dimethyl sulfoxide. They could be solution‐cast into transparent, flexible, and tough films. These polyhydrazides and poly(amide–hydrazide)s had Tgs in the range of 167–237°C and could be thermally cyclodehydrated into the corresponding poly(1,3,4‐oxadiazole)s and poly(amide–1,3,4‐oxadiazole)s approximately in the region of 250–350°C, as evidenced by the DSC thermograms. All the tert‐butyl‐substituted oxadiazole polymers and those derived from isophthalic dihydrazide were organic soluble. The thermally converted oxadiazole polymers exhibited Tgs in the range of 208–243°C and did not show significant weight loss before 450°C either in nitrogen or in air. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(ether amide)s containing naphthalene unit were prepared either by the polyaddition reaction of aromatic bis(2‐oxazoline)s with the different dihydroxynaphthalenes or by the homopolyaddition of a monomer containing an oxazoline, a hydroxy, and naphthalene moieties. First, polymerization method represents AA + BB mode where 1,4‐phenylene‐2,2′‐bis(2‐oxazoline) (A) and 1,3‐phenylene‐2,2′‐bis(2‐oxazoline) (B) were used as AA monomers and four different dihydroxynaphthalenes 1–4 were used as BB monomers. In the second case, 2‐(6‐hydroxynaphthalene‐2‐yl)‐2‐oxazoline (5) was used as AB‐type monomer in thermally induced polymerizations. The time dependences of polyadditions in bulk as well as in the solution were examined. The reduction of molar mass was observed after the initial fast increase of molar mass. This can be explained by the presence of side and degradation reactions. In both cases, polyadditions resulted in the linear poly(ether amide)s, which were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Thermal properties of the prepared polymers were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements. Comparison of the temperatures of glass transition for polymers prepared in AA + BB mode shows the strong dependence of thermal properties on the structure of the polymers. The values were in the range of 136–171°C. The glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of poly[2‐(6‐hydroxynaphthalene‐2‐yl)‐2‐oxazoline] prepared by AB‐type polyaddition is 183°C, which corresponds to the higher contents of hard aromatic segments in the latter type of polymers compared to the polymers prepared in the AA + BB‐type polyadditions. The described polymers represent novel naphthalene unit‐containing poly(ether amide)s for different applications in material science. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Aromatic poly(amide amine)s (APAAs), as novel high‐performance polymers, have been obtained by the condensation polymerization of N,N'‐bis(4‐bromobenzoyl)‐p‐phenylenediamine with two different primary aromatic diamines via palladium‐catalyzed aryl amination reaction. The structures of the polymers are characterized by means of FTIR, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis, the results show a good agreement with the proposed structures. DSC and TGA measurements exhibit that polymers possess high glass transition temperature (Tg > 240 °C) and good thermal stability with high decomposition temperatures (T5 > 400 °C). These novel polymers also display good solubility. In addition, due to its special structure, APAA‐2 is endowed with significantly strong photonic luminescence in N,N‐dimethylformamide and good electroactivity. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Three new bis(ether‐acyl chloride) monomers, 1,1‐bis[4‐(4‐chloroformylphenoxy)phenyl]cyclohexane ( 1a ), 5,5‐bis[4‐(4‐chloroformylphenoxy)phenyl]‐4,7‐methanohexahydroindan ( 1b ), and 9,9‐bis[4‐(4‐chloroformylphenoxy)phenyl]fluorene ( 1c ), were synthesized from readily available compounds. Aromatic polybenzoxazoles bearing ether and cardo groups were obtained by the low‐temperature solution polycondensation of the bis(ether‐acyl chloride)s with three bis(aminophenol)s and the subsequent thermal cyclodehydration of the resultant poly(o‐hydroxy amide)s. The intermediate poly(o‐hydroxy amide)s exhibited inherent viscosities in the range of 0.35–0.71 dL/g. All of the poly(o‐hydroxy amide)s were amorphous and soluble in many organic polar solvents, and most of them could afford flexible and tough films by solvent casting. The poly(o‐hydroxy amide)s exhibited glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) in the range of 141–169 °C and could be thermally converted into the corresponding polybenzoxazoles approximately in the region of 240–350 °C, as indicated by the DSC thermograms. Flexible and tough films of polybenzoxazoles could be obtained by thermal cyclodehydration of the poly(o‐hydroxy amide) films. All the polybenzoxazoles were amorphous and showed an enhanced Tg but a dramatically decreased solubility as compared with their poly(o‐hydroxy amide) precursors. They exhibited Tg's of 215–272 °C by DSC and showed insignificant weight loss before 500 °C in nitrogen or air. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Two series of phosphorus‐containing aromatic poly(ester amide)s with inherent viscosities of 0.46–3.20 dL/g were prepared by low‐temperature solution polycondensation from 1,4‐bis(3‐aminobenzoyloxy)‐2‐(6‐oxido‐6H‐dibenz〈c,e〉〈1,2〉oxaphosphorin‐6‐yl)naphthalene and 1,4‐bis(4‐aminobenzoyloxy)‐2‐(6‐oxido‐6H‐dibenz〈c,e〉〈1,2〉oxaphosphorin‐6‐yl)naphthalene with various aromatic diacid chlorides. All the poly(ester amide)s were amorphous and readily soluble in many organic solvents, such as N,N‐dimethylformamide, N,N‐dimethylacetamide (DMAc), and N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP). Transparent, tough, and flexible films of these polymers were cast from DMAc and NMP solutions. Their casting films had tensile strengths of 71–214 MPa, elongations to break of 5–10%, and initial moduli of 2.3–6.0 GPa. These poly(ester amide)s had glass‐transition temperatures of 209–239 °C (m‐series) and 222–267 °C (p‐series). The degradation temperatures at 10% weight loss in nitrogen for these polymers ranged from 462 to 489 °C, and the char yields at 800 °C were 55–63%. Most of the poly(ester amide)s also showed a high char yield of 35–45%, even at 800 °C under a flow of air. The limited oxygen indices of these poly(ester amide)s were 35–46. © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 459–470, 2002; DOI 10.1002/pola.10129  相似文献

Two new benzoxazole or benzothiazole‐containing diimide‐dicarboxylic acid monomers, such as 2‐[3,5‐bis(N‐trimellitimidoyl)phenyl]benzoxazole ( 2 o ) or 2‐[3,5‐bis(N‐trimellitimidoyl)phenyl]benzothiazole ( 2 s ) were synthesized from the condensation reaction between 3,5‐diaminobenzoic acid and 2‐aminophenol or 2‐aminothiophenol in polyphosphoric acid (PPA) with subsequent reaction of trimellitic anhydride in the presence of glacial acetic acid, respectively, and two new series of modified aromatic poly(amide‐imide)s were prepared. This preparation was done with pendent benzoxazole or benzothiazole units from the newly synthesized diimide‐dicarboxylic acid and various aromatic diamines by triphenyl phosphite‐activated polycondensation. In addition, the corresponding unsubstituted poly(amide‐imide)s were prepared under identical experimental conditions for comparative purposes. Characterization of polymers was accomplished by inherent viscosity measurements, FT‐IR, UV–visible, 1H‐NMR spectroscopy and thermogravimetry. The polymers were obtained in quantitative yields with inherent viscosities between 0.39 and 0.81 dl g?1. The solubilities of modified poly(amide‐imide)s in common organic solvents as well as their thermal stability were enhanced compared to those of the corresponding unmodified poly(amide‐imide)s. The glass transition temperature, 10% weight loss temperature, and char yields at 800°C were, respectively, 7–26°C, 17–46°C and 2–5% higher than those of the unmodified polymers. The intermediate poly(o‐hydroxyamide)s exhibited inherent viscosities of 0.39–0.98 dL/g. All of the poly(o‐hydroxyamide)s were amorphous and soluble in polar organic solvents such as N,N‐dimethylacetamide, and most of them could afford flexible and tough films via solvent casting. The poly(o‐hydroxyamide)s exhibited glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) of 129–194 °C and could be thermally converted into corresponding polybenzoxazoles in the solid state at temperatures higher than 300 °C. Two series of novel fluorinated aromatic polyamides were prepared from 1,1‐bis[4‐(4‐carboxyphenoxy)phenyl]‐1‐phenyl‐2,2,2‐trifluoroethane with various aromatic diamines or from 1,1‐bis[4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]‐1‐phenyl‐2,2,2‐trifluoroethane with various aromatic dicarboxylic acids with the phosphorylation polyamidation technique. These polyamides had inherent viscosities ranging from 0.51 to 1.54 dL/g that corresponded to weight‐average and number‐average molecular weights (by gel permeation chromatography) of 36,200–80,000 and 17,200–64,300, respectively. All polymers were highly soluble in aprotic polar solvents, such as N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone and N,N‐dimethylacetamide, and some could even be dissolved in less‐polar solvents like tetrahydrofuran. The flexible and tough films cast from the polymer solutions possessed tensile strengths of 76–94 MPa and initial moduli of 1.70–2.22 GPa. Glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) and softening temperatures of these polyamides were observed in the range of 185–268 °C by differential scanning calorimetry or thermomechanical analysis. Decomposition temperatures (Td's) for 10% weight loss all occurred above 500 °C in both nitrogen and air atmospheres. Almost all the fluorinated polyamides displayed relatively higher Tg and Td values than the corresponding nonfluorinated analogues. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel soluble pyridazinone‐ or pyridazine‐containing poly(arylene ether)s were prepared by a polycondensation reaction. The pyridazinone monomer, 6‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)pyridazin‐3(2H)‐one ( 1 ), was synthesized from the corresponding acetophenone and glyoxylic acid in a simple one‐pot reaction. The pyridazinone monomer was successfully copolymerized with bisphenol A (BPA) or 1,2‐dihydro‐4‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)phthalazin‐1(2H)‐one (DHPZ) and bis(4‐fluorophenyl)sulfone to form high‐molecular‐weight polymers. The copolymers had inherent viscosities of 0.5–0.9 dL/g. The glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) of the copolymers synthesized with BPA increased with increasing content of the pyridazinone monomer. The Tg's of the copolymers synthesized from DHPZ with different pyridazinone contents were similar to those of the two homopolymers. The homopolymers showed Tg's from 202 to 291 °C by differential scanning calorimetry. The 5% weight loss temperatures in nitrogen measured by thermogravimetric analysis were in the range of 411–500 °C. 4‐(6‐Chloropyridazin‐3‐yl)phenol ( 2 ) was synthesized from 1 via a simple one‐pot reaction. 2 was copolymerized with 4,4′‐isopropylidenediphenol and bis(4‐fluorophenyl)sulfone to form high‐Tg polymers. The copolymers with less than 80 mol % pyridazinone or chloropyridazine monomers were soluble in chlorinated solvents such as chloroform. The copolymers with higher pyridazinone contents and homopolymers were not soluble in chlorinated solvents but were still soluble in dipolar aprotic solvents such as N‐methylpyrrolidinone. The soluble polymers could be cast into flexible films from solution. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 3328–3335, 2006  相似文献

A new naphthalene unit-containing bis(ether anhydride), 2,6-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)naphthalene dianhydride, was synthesized in three steps starting from the nucleophilic nitrodisplacement reaction of 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene and 4-nitrophthalonitrile in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solution in the presence of potassium carbonate, followed by alkaline hydrolysis of the intermediate bis(ether dinitrile) and subsequent dehydration of the resulting bis(ether diacid). High-molar-mass aromatic poly(ether imide)s were prepared using a conventional two-step polymerization process from the bis(ether anhydride) and various aromatic diamines. The intermediate poly(ether amic acid)s had inherent viscosities of 0.65–2.03 dL/g. The films of poly(ether imide)s derived from two rigid diamines, i.e. p-phenylenediamine and benzidine, crystallized during the thermal imidization process. The other poly(ether imide)s belonged to amorphous materials and could be fabricated into transparent, flexible, and tough films. These aromatic poly(ether imide) films had yield strengths of 104–131 MPa, tensile strengths of 102–153 MPa, elongation to break of 8–87%, and initial moduli of 1.6–3.2 GPa. The glass transition temperatures (Tg's) of poly(ether imide)s were recorded in the range of 220–277°C depending on the nature of the diamine moiety. All polymers were stable up to 500°C, with 10% weight loss being recorded above 550°C in both air and nitrogen atmospheres. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of new polyesters was prepared from terephthaloyl (or isophthaloyl) chloride acid with various cardo bisphenols on solution polycondensation in nitrobenzene using pyridine as hydrogen chloride quencher at 150 °C. These polyesters were produced with inherent viscosities of 0.32–0.49 dL · g−1. Most of these polyesters exhibited excellent solubility in a variety of solvents such as N,N‐dimethylformamide, tetrahydrofuran, tetrachloroethane, dimethyl sulfoxide, N,N‐dimethylacetamide, N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone, m‐cresol, and o‐chlorophenol. The polyesters containing cardo groups including diphenylmethylene, tricyclo[5.2.1.02,6]decyl, tert‐butylcyclohexyl, phenylcyclohexyl, and cyclododecyl groups exhibited better solubility than bisphenol A–based polyesters. These polymers showed glass transition temperatures (Tg's) between 185 °C and 243 °C and decomposition temperatures at 10% weight loss ranging from 406 °C to 472 °C in nitrogen. These cardo polyesters exhibited higher Tg's and better solubility than bisphenol A‐based polyesters. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 4451–4456, 2000  相似文献

All the polymers were obtained in quantitative yields with inherent viscosities of 0.52–0.86 dL · g?1. The poly(amide‐imide)s showed an amorphous nature and were readily soluble in various solvents, such as N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone, N,N‐dimethylacetamide (DMAc), N,N‐dimethylformamide, pyridine, and cyclohexanone. A novel structurally asymmetric bis(ether amine) monomer containing trifluoromethyl groups, 1,7‐bis(4‐amino‐2‐trifluoromethylphenoxy)naphthalene, was prepared through the nucleophilic substitution reaction of 2‐chloro‐5‐nitrobenzotrifluoride and 1,7‐dihydroxynaphthalene in the presence of potassium carbonate in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP), followed by catalytic reduction with hydrazine and Pd/C in ethanol. A series of new fluorine‐containing polyimides were synthesized from the diamine with various commercially available aromatic tetracarboxylic dianhydrides using a two‐stage process with thermal or chemical imidization method. The intermediate poly(amic acid)s had inherent viscosities between 0.93 and 1.93 dL/g. Most of the polyimides obtained from both routes were readily soluble in many organic solvents such as NMP and N,N‐dimethylacetamide (DMAc). All the polyimides could afford transparent, flexible, and strong films with low moisture absorptions of 0.29–0.69%, low dielectric constants of 2.81–3.23 at 10 kHz, and an ultraviolet‐visible absorption cutoff wavelength at 358–423 nm. The glass‐transition temperatures (Tgs) (by DSC) and softening temperatures (by thermomechanical analysis) of the polyimides were recorded in the range of 222–271 °C and 210–266 °C, respectively. Decomposition temperatures for 10% weight loss all occurred above 500 °C in both nitrogen and air atmospheres. For a comparative study, some properties of the present polyimides will be compared with those of structurally related ones derived from 1,7‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)naphthalene and 1,5‐bis(4‐amino‐2‐trifluoromethylphenoxy)naphthalene. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel polyamide‐imides III containing 2,6‐bis(phenoxy)naphthalene units were synthesized by 2,6‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)naphthalene and various bis(trimellitimide)s in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP) using triphenyl phosphite and pyridine as condensing agents through direct polycondensation. The polymers were obtained in quantitative yield with inherent viscosities up to 1.53 dL/g. Most of the polymers showed good solubility in NMP, N,N‐dimethylacetamide, N,N‐dimethylformamide, and dimethyl sulfoxide and could be solution‐cast into transparent, flexible, and tough films. The films had tensile strengths of 84–111 MPa, elongations at break of 8–33%, and initial moduli of 2.2–2.8 GPa. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction revealed that most polymers III were amorphous. The glass‐transition temperatures of some of the polymers could be determined by differential scanning calorimetry traces, recorded at 247–290 °C. The polyamide‐imides exhibited excellent thermal stabilities and had 10% weight loss at temperatures in the range of 501–575 °C under nitrogen atmosphere. They left more than 57% residue even at 800 °C in nitrogen. A comparative study of some corresponding polyamide‐imides is also presented. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
