Levi Classes Generated by Nilpotent Groups

Let be a class of all groups G for which the normal closure (x) ^G of every element x belongs to a class . is a Levi class generated by . Let and ₀ be classes of finitely generated nilpotent groups and of torsion-free, finitely generated, nilpotent groups, respectively. We prove that and , and so and . It is shown that quasivarieties and are closed under free products, and that each contains at most one maximal proper subquasivariety. It is also proved that is closed under free products if so is .     

A Geometric Characterization of Fischer's Baby Monster

The sporadic simple group F ₂ known as Fischer's Baby Monster acts flag-transitively on a rank 5 P-geometry . P-geometries are geometries with string diagrams, all of whose nonempty edges except one are projective planes of order 2 and one terminal edge is the geometry of the Petersen graph. Let be a flag-transitive P-geometry of rank 5. Suppose that each proper residue of is isomorphic to the corresponding residue in . We show that in this case is isomorphic to . This result realizes a step in classification of the flag-transitive P-geometries and also plays an important role in the characterization of the Fischer–Griess Monster in terms of its 2-local parabolic geometry.     

Imprimitive Q-polynomial Association Schemes

It is well known that imprimitive P-polynomial association schemes with are either bipartite or antipodal, i.e., intersection numbers satisfy either for all for all . In this paper, we show that imprimitive -polynomial association schemes with are either dual bipartite or dual antipodal, i.e., dual intersection numbers satisfy either .     

Derangements and Tensor Powers of Adjoint Modules for \mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}_n

We obtain the decomposition of the tensor space as a module for , find an explicit formula for the multiplicities of its irreducible summands, and (when n 2k) describe the centralizer algebra = ( ) and its representations. The multiplicities of the irreducible summands are derangement numbers in several important instances, and the dimension of is given by the number of derangements of a set of 2k elements.     

K-Theory for the Banach Algebra of Operators on James''s Quasi-reflexive Banach Spaces

We prove that the K-groups of the Banach algebra of bounded, linear operators on the pth James space , where 1 < p < , are given by and . Moreover, for each Banach space and each non-zero, closed ideal contained in the ideal of inessential operators, we show that and . This enables us to calculate the K-groups of for each Banach space which is a direct sum of finitely many James spaces and -spaces.     

Type II Self-Dual Codes over Finite Rings and Even Unimodular Lattices

In this paper, we investigate self-dual codes over finite rings, specifically the ring of integers modulo 2m. Type II codes over are introduced as self-dual codes with Euclidean weights which are a multiple of 2m +1. We describe a relationship between Type II codes and even unimodular lattices. This relationship provides much information on Type II codes. Double circulant Type II codes over are also studied.     

On posets with isomorphic interval posets

Let be a partially ordered set, Int the system of all (nonempty) intervals of partially ordered by the set-theoretical inclusion . We are interested in partially ordered sets with Int isomorphic to Int . We are going to show that they correspond to couples of binary relations on A satisfying some conditions. If is a directed partially ordered set, the only with Int isomorphic to Int are corresponding to direct decompositions of ( denotes the dual of . The present results include those presented in the paper [11] by V. Slavík. Systems of intervals, particularly of lattices, have been investigated by many authors, cf. [1]–[11].     

Brauer Diagrams, Updown Tableaux and Nilpotent Matrices

We interpret geometrically a variant of the Robinson-Schensted correspondence which links Brauer diagrams with updown tableaux, in the spirit of Steinberg's result [32] on the original Robinson-Schensted correspondence. Our result uses the variety of all where is a complete flag in is a nondegenerate alternating bilinear form on and N is a nilpotent element of the Lie algebra of the simultaneous stabilizer of both and instead of Steinberg's variety of where are two complete flags in and N is a nilpotent element of the Lie algebra of the simultaneous stabilizer of both .     

On Transversally Holomorphic Maps of Kählerian Foliations

Any transversally holomorphic foliated map of Kählerianfoliations with harmonic, is shown to be a transversallyharmonic map and an absolute minimum of the energy functional inits foliated homotopy class.     

Coreflections Versus Regular Epimorphisms in Categories of Topological Spaces

Let be an epireflective subcategory of the category Top of topological spaces which is not contained in the category of indiscrete spaces (e.g. Top, the category of Hausdorff spaces, the category of Tychonoff spaces) and be a coreflective subcategory of . In this paper we prove that the coreflector preserves regular epimorphisms if and only if or is contained in the category of discrete spaces.     

Determinants in Triangulated Categories

For a small triangulated category , Bass's K ₁ group is described, and the theorem of the heart is proved. We define the determinant map from to Neeman's , and we compute this map when is the derived category of an Abelian category .     

Extremal Decomposition Problems in the Space of Riemann Surfaces

An extension of a theorem on extremal decomposition of a Riemann surface is obtained. The problem of extremal decomposition is extended from the case of a Riemann surface with a prescribed set of distinguished points to the case of the Teichmüller space corresponding to under quasiconformal homeomorphisms f. For the functional of our problem on extremal decomposition of a surface , we consider a function expressing the dependence of the extremal value of on a point . Differentiation formulas for the function are derived. These formulas are different and depend on the genus g of the surface . The case where the function is pluriharmonic is considered. Auxiliary Problem Principle and Proximal Point Methods

An extension of the auxiliary problem principle to variational inequalities with non-symmetric multi-valued operators in Hilbert spaces is studied. This extension concerns the case that the operator is split into the sum of a single-valued operator , possessing a kind of pseudo Dunn property, and a maximal monotone operator . The current auxiliary problem is k constructed by fixing at the previous iterate, whereas (or its single-valued approximation ^k) k is considered at a variable point. Using auxiliary operators of the form ^k+ , with _k>0, the standard for the auxiliary problem principle assumption of the strong convexity of the function h can be weakened exploiting mutual properties of and h. Convergence of the general scheme is analyzed and some applications are sketched briefly.     

A New Cover of the 3-Local Geometry of Co1

The 3-local geometry of the sporadic simple group Co₁ has been known to have a cover with a flag-transitive automorphism group which is a nonsplit extension of an elementary Abelian 2-group of rank 24 (the Leech lattice modulo 2) by Co₁. It was conjectured that was simply connected. We disprove this conjecture by constructing a double cover of . The automorphism group of is of the shape . However, it is not isomorphic to the involution centralizer of the Monster sporadic simple group.     

Equational Theories for Classes of Finite Semigroups

It is proved that there exists an infinite sequence of finitely based semigroup varieties such that, for all i, an equational theory for and for the class of all finite semigroups in is undecidable while an equational theory for and for the class of all finite semigroups in is decidable. An infinite sequence of finitely based semigroup varieties is constructed so that, for all i, an equational theory for and for the class of all finite semigroups in is decidable whicle an equational theory for and for the class of all finite semigroups in is not.     

Orbits of Positive Operators from a Differentiable Viewpoint

Let be a unital C^*-algebra and G the group of units of . A geometrical study of the action of G over the set ⁺ of all positive elements of is presented. The orbits of elements with closed range by this action are provided with a structure of differentiable homogeneous space with a natural connection. The orbits are partitioned in 'components' which also have a rich geometrical structure.     

On the Karoubi Filtration of a Category

Let be an -filtered category in the sense of Karoubi. This is the categorical analogue of an ideal in a ring . Pedersen and Weibel constructed a fibration of K-theory spectra associated with the sequence . We present a new easier proof based on Waldhausen' generic fibration.     

Quasivariety Generated by Free Metabelian and 2-Nilpotent Groups

Let qG be a quasivariety generated by a group G and be a non-Abelian quasivariety of groups with a finite lattice of subquasivarieties. Suppose is contained in a quasivariety generated by the following two groups: a free 2-nilpotent group F₂( ₂) of rank 2 and a free metabelian (i.e., with an Abelian commutant) group F₂( ₂) of rank 2. Annihilators in Normal Autometrized Algebras

The concepts of an annihilator and a relative annihilator in an autometrized l-algebra are introduced. It is shown that every relative annihilator in a normal autometrized l-algebra is an ideal of and every principal ideal of is an annihilator of . The set of all annihilators of forms a complete lattice. The concept of an I-polar is introduced for every ideal I of . The set of all I-polars is a complete lattice which becomes a two-element chain provided I is prime. The I-polars are characterized as pseudocomplements in the lattice of all ideals of containing I.     

New Proof of the Semmes Inequality for the Derivative of the Rational Function

In the open disk of the complex plane, we consider the following spaces of functions: the Bloch space ; the Hardy--Sobolev space ; and the Hardy--Besov space . It is shown that if all the poles of the rational function R of degree n, , lie in the domain , then , where and depends only on . The second of these inequalities for the case of the half-plane was obtained by Semmes in 1984. The proof given by Semmes was based on the use of Hankel operators, while our proof uses the special integral representation of rational functions.
