Epoxide and aldehyde end‐functionalized poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEGs) (Mw = 400, 1000, 3400, 5000, and 20,000) were grafted to poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) film substrates that contained amine or alcohol groups. PET‐PAH and PET‐PEI were prepared by reacting poly(allylamine) (PAH) and polyethylenimine (PEI) with PET substrates, respectively; PET‐PVOH was prepared by the adsorption of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) to PET substrates. Grafting was characterized and quantified by the increase of the intensity of the PEG carbon peak in the X‐ray photoelectron spectra. Grafting yield was optimized by controlling reaction parameters and was found to be substrate‐independent in general. Graft density consistently decreased as PEG chain length was increased. This is likely due to the higher steric requirement of higher molecular weight PEG molecules. Water contact angles of surfaces containing long PEG chains (3400, 5000, and 20,000) are much lower than those containing shorter PEG chains (400 and 1000). This indicates that longer PEG chains are more effective in rendering surfaces hydrophilic. Protein adsorption experiments were carried out on PET‐ and PEG‐modified derivatives using collagen, lysozyme, and albumin. After PEG grafting, the amount of protein adsorbed was reduced in all cases. Trends in surface requirements for protein resistance are: surfaces with longer PEG chains and higher chain density, especially the former, are more protein resistant; PEG grafted to surfaces containing branched or network polymers is not effective at covering the underlying substrate, and thus does not protect the entire surface from protein adsorption; and substrates containing surface charge are less protein‐resistant. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and low molecular weight poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) were covalently immobilized on silicon wafers and gold films by way of the CH insertion reaction of perfluorophenyl azides (PFPAs) by either photolysis or thermolysis. The immobilization does not require chemical derivatization of PEO or PEG, and polymers of different molecular weights were successfully attached to the substrate to give uniform films. Microarrays were also generated by printing polymer solutions on PFPA-functionalized wafer or Au slides followed by light activation. For low molecular weight PEG, the immobilization was highly dependent on the quality of the film deposited on the substrate. While the spin-coated and printed PEG showed poor immobilization efficiency, thermal treatment of the PEG melt on PFPA-functionalized surfaces resulted in excellent film quality, giving, for example, a grafting density of 9.2×10(-4)?(-2) and an average distance between grafted chains of 33? for PEG 20,000. The anti-fouling property of the films was evaluated by fluorescence microscopy and surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi). Low protein adsorption was observed on thermally-immobilized PEG whereas the photoimmobilized PEG showed increased protein adsorption. In addition, protein arrays were created using polystyrene (PS) and PEG based on the differential protein adsorption of the two polymers.  相似文献

Monothiol-terminated hyperbranched polyglycerols (HPGs) were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of glycidol from partially deprotonated 2,2'-dihydroxyethane disulfide as the initiator and subsequent reduction of the disulfide group. Two molecular weights of HPG thiols were synthesized. The molecular weights of the polymers were determined by MALDI-TOF analysis, and the presence of thiol was verified by Ellman's assay. The self-assembly of HPG thiols on gold was studied and compared with that of linear poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) thiols utilizing various surface analysis techniques. Monothiol-functionalized HPGs readily adsorbed to a gold surface and formed highly uniform thin films on the surface. The graft density of the HPG layer decreased with an increase in the molecular weight of the polymer. The amount of polymer on the surface increased with increasing incubation concentration and saturated above 6 g/L polymer concentration. Generally, HPG thiols gave lower graft density compared to linear PEG thiols of similar molecular weight. AFM morphological studies showed that HPG thiols form more uniform and smooth surface films compared to PEG thiols. Incubation of a polymer-coated surface (HPG thiols and PEG thiols) with bovine serum albumin and immunoglobulin showed that the high molecular weight hyperbranched polyglycerol was more resistant to protein adsorption than linear PEG of similar molecular weight or lower molecular weight HPG. The protein adsorption decreased with increasing graft density of the HPG chains on the surface. Our results show that HPG could be a good alternative to PEG in the development of nonfouling functional surfaces.  相似文献

Thin polymer films that prevent the adhesion of bacteria are of interest as coatings for the development of infection‐resistant biomaterials. This study investigates the influence of grafting density and film thickness on the adhesion of Staphylococcus epidermidis to poly(poly(ethylene glycol)methacrylate) (PPEGMA) and poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) brushes prepared via surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI‐ATRP). These brushes are compared with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) brushes, which are obtained by grafting PEG onto an epoxide‐modified substrate. Except for very low grafting densities (ρ = 1%), crystal violet staining experiments show that the PHEMA and PPEGMA brushes are equally effective as the PEG‐modified surfaces in preventing S. epidermis adhesion and do not reveal any significant variations as a function of film thickness or grafting density. These results indicate that brushes generated by SI‐ATRP are an attractive alternative to grafted‐onto PEG films for the preparation of surface coatings that resist bacterial adhesion.

To modify carbon black surface, the surface grafting of hyperbranched poly(amidoamine) onto the surface by using dendrimer synthesis methodology was investigated. Carbon black having amino groups (initiator sites) was prepared by the reduction of surface nitro groups introduced by nitration of aromatic rings. It was found that hyperbranched poly(amidoamine) was propagated from carbon black surface by repeating two processes: (1) Michael addition of methyl acrylate (MA) to surface amino groups and (2) amidation of the resulting esters with ethylenediamine: the percentage of poly(amidoamine) grafting reached to 96.2% after 10th‐generation. The grafting of hyperbranched poly(amidoamine) onto polystyrene‐bead as a model compound of carbon black was also achieved by the above procedures. However, the theoretical propagation of poly(amidoamine) dendrimer was not achieved, because of steric hindrance of grafted polymer. Hyperbranched poly(amidoamine)‐grafted carbon black gave a stable dispersion in a good solvent for poly(amidoamine). Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We report the first example of grafting hyperbranched polyglycerol onto poly(vinyl alcohol) via ring-opening polymerisation of glycidol to prepare poly(vinyl alcohol-graft-hyperbranched glycerol) (P[(VA)-g-(hPG)]). The effects of catalyst, molecular weight of PVA, reaction temperature, water content, moles of reagent, and addition time of reagent were also investigated. P[(VA)-g-(hPG)] with various mole fractions of hPG were prepared and the degrees of substitution and branching were determined. P[(VA)-g-(hPG)] displayed decreased degree of crystallinity and also increased solubility in water, compared to PVA. P[(VA)-g-(hPG)] is shown to be a superior hair styling polymer with a curl retention value of 85% after 4 h. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. It is a common view that poly(vinyl acetate) has many branches at the acetyl side group, but that the corresponding poly(vinyl alcohol) has little branching. In order to study the branching in poly(vinyl acetate) and poly(vinyl alcohol) which is formed by chain transfer to polymer, the polymerization of 14C-labeled vinyl acetate in the presence of crosslinked poly(vinyl acetate), which was able to be decrosslinked to give soluble polymers, was investigated at 60°C and 0°C. This system made it possible to separate as well as to distinguish the graft polymer from the newly polymerized homopolymer. Furthermore, the degree of grafting onto the acetoxymethyl group and onto the main chain were estimated. It became clear that, in the polymerization of vinyl acetate, chain transfer to the polymer main chain takes place about 2.4 times as frequently at 60°C as that to the acetoxy group and about 4.8 times as frequently at 0°C.  相似文献

Hyperbranched poly(amido amine)s containing vinyl and hydroxyl groups were successfully synthesized via Michael addition polymerization of triacrylamide (TT) and 3-amino-1,2-propanediol (APD) with equal molar ratio in feed. 1H, 13C and HSQC NMR techniques were used to clarify the structure of hyperbranched polymers and polymerization mechanism. The Michael addition reaction of hyperbranched poly(1TT-1APD)s with primary amine-terminated poly(ε-benzyloxycarbonyl-l-lysine)s [PLys(Z)] yielded a star-like hyperbranched polymers with poly(1TT-1APD) core and Plys(Z) shell. The Z groups in PLys(Z) were removed under acidolysis, and thus star-like hyperbranched polymers with hydroxyl groups inside and primary amine groups outside were obtained successfully.  相似文献

The equilibrium properties of monolayers of two polymers: poly(octadecyl acrylate) and poly(vinyl stearate) on water have been measured. The surface pressure (Pi) versus surface concentration (Gamma) curves indicate that the water-air interface is a poor solvent for both polymers. The thermal expansivity shows a sharp change near room temperature. This behavior is typical of a glass transition; this is the first time that such a plot is observed for Langmuir films. The Pi vs Gamma curves measured by the continuous compression method show strong anisotropy effects. They also show that the monolayer is brought into nonequilibrium states depending on the compression rate. Within the linear regime, the relaxation experiments were bimodal. The longest relaxation time strongly increases as T is decreased, which might be compatible with the high increase of viscosity in the glass transition. The oscillatory barrier experiments showed that the maximum strain of the linear regime is smaller than 3% for both monolayers. The Fourier-transform analysis of the oscillatory experiments beyond the linear regime points out the contribution of different harmonics in the response function. Oscillations in the nonlinear regime show hysteresis cycles. The results obtained indicate that some of the previously published data for these polymer monolayers correspond to nonequilibrium states.  相似文献

We compare two routes for creating protein adsorption-resistant self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) by chemical modification of silicon surfaces with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) oligomeric derivatives. The first route involves the assembly of 2-methyl[(polyethyleneoxy)propyl]trichlorosilane (Cl3SiMPEO) films onto oxidized silicon surfaces (OH-SiO(x)) either by a liquid-phase process at room temperature or by a gas-phase process at 423 K, producing Si-O-Si bonds between the substrate and the organic layer. The second pathway makes use of the assembly of poly(ethylene glycol methyl ether) (MPEG) films onto hydrogen-passivated silicon surfaces (H-Si) using a liquid-phase process at 353 or 423 K, leading to the formation of Si-O-C bonds between the substrate and the organic layer. Structural investigation by X-ray reflectometry (XRR) reveals that the thickness and surface densities of the grafted PEO monolayers strongly depend on experimental conditions such as temperature and grafting time. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) shows that very smooth and homogeneous monolayers can be obtained with average roughnesses close to those measured on the corresponding bare substrates. Finally, the antifouling properties of the modified silicon surfaces were evaluated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), using a membrane protein (P.69 antigen) as model protein. Both types of PEO monolayers exhibit excellent protein repellency, as soon as the grafting density is equal to or higher than 1.7 chains/nm2.  相似文献

A straightforward approach to generate a stable and protein-resistant poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) surface using self-assembled hydrophilic polymers is demonstrated in this work. Epoxy-modified polymers were directly adsorbed from aqueous solution onto plasma oxidized PDMS based on H-bond interaction, and epoxies of polymer and silanols on oxidized PDMS surface were crosslinked by heating at 110 degrees C. The coating process could be completed within half hour. Poly(dimethylacrylamide-co-glycidyl methacrylate) (PDMA-co-GMA), poly(vinyl pyrrolidone)-g-glycidyl methacrylate (PVP-g-GMA) and poly(vinyl alcohol)-g-glycidyl methacrylate (PVA-g-GMA) (D. P. Wu, B. X. Zhao, Z. P. Dai, J. H. Qin and B. C. Lin, Lab Chip, 2006, 6, 942) were employed as examples here. Unlike PDMA, PVP, and PVA themselves, these epoxy-modified hydrophilic polymers could be directly used as static surface coatings on oxidized PDMS, and inhibited electroosmotic flow (EOF) within pH 3-11. It was also found that hard baking of PDMS at 150 degrees C for 24 hours before surface coating could greatly retard surface hydrophobicity recovery after oxygen plasma exposure, which strengthened epoxy-modified polymer coatings on oxidized PDMS surface, and resulted in EOF less than 0.2 x 10(-4) cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) (pH 9.0) within two weeks. On epoxy-modified polymer coated PDMS microchips, basic proteins, peptides and DNA fragments could be separated satisfactorily, in which more than 2 x 10(4) plates per 2 cm and less than 3% RSD (>8 runs) for migration time were obtained for lysozyme.  相似文献

Functionalized hyperbranched poly(siloxysilane)s have been prepared by hydrosilylation reactions involving the multiple silicon hydride (SiH) groups of the polymer to introduce other reactive groups such as epoxy, amine, and hydroxyl groups. The possible use of these modified polymers as novel crosslinking agents is discussed. The same hydrosilylation reaction is used to attach preformed linear poly(isobutylene) (PIB) or poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) onto the hyperbranched polymer to afford unusual hyperbranched–linear star block copolymers. The PIB‐derived copolymer is shown to be very hydrophobic, whereas its PEO‐derived counterpart is amphiphilic. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 2970–2978, 2000  相似文献

This work describes studying the permanent grafting of carboxylic acid end-functionalized poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether (PEG) chains of different molecular weights from the melt onto a surface employing poly(glycidyl methacrylate) ultrathin film as an anchoring layer. The grafting led to the synthesis of the complete PEG brushes possessing exceptionally high grafting density. The maximum thickness of the attached PEG films was strongly dependent on the length of the polymer chains being grafted. The maximum grafting efficiency was close to the critical entanglement molecular weight region for PEG. All grafted PEG layers were in the "brush regime", since the distance between grafting sites for the layers was lower than the end-to-end distance for the anchored macromolecules. Scanning probe microscopy revealed that the grafting process led to complete PEG layers with surface smoothness on a nanometric scale. Practically all samples were partly or fully covered with crystalline domains that disappeared when samples were scanned under water. Due to the PEG hydrophilic nature, the surface with the grafted layer exhibited a low (up to 21 degrees ) water contact angle.  相似文献

Novel hyperbranched poly(amido amine)s containing tertiary amines on the backbones and acryl or secondary amines as the surface groups were successfully synthesized via the Michael addition polymerizations of a triacrylamide [1,3,5‐triacryloylhexahydro‐1,3,5‐triazine (TT)] and a difunctional amine [n‐butylamine (BA)] NMR techniques were used to clarify the structures of hyperbranched polymers and polymerization mechanism. The reactivity of the secondary amine formed in situ was much lower than that of the primary amines in BA. When the feed molar ratio was 1:1 TT/BA, the secondary amine formed in situ was almost kept out of the reaction before the BA (AA′) and TT (B3) monomers were consumed, and this led to the formation of A′B2 intermediates containing one secondary amine group and two acryl groups. The self‐polymerization of the A′B2 intermediates produced hyperbranched polymers bearing acryl as surface groups. For the polymerization with the feed molar ratio of 1:2 TT/BA, A′2B intermediates containing one acryl group and two secondary amine groups were accumulated until self‐polymerization started; the self‐polymerization of the intermediates formed hyperbranched polymers with secondary amines as their surface groups. Modifications of surface functional groups were studied to form new hyperbranched polymers. The hyperbranched poly(amido amine)s were amorphous. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Stimuli‐responsive hyperbranched polymers have attracted great attention in recent years because of their wide applications in biomedicine. Through proton‐transfer polymerization of triethanolamine and 1,2,7,8‐diepoxyoctane with the help of potassium hydride, a series of novel backbone thermo and pH dual‐responsive hyperbranched poly(amine‐ether)s were prepared successfully in one‐pot. The degrees of branching of the resulting polymers were at 0.40–0.49. Turbidity measurements revealed that hyperbranched poly(amine‐ether)s exhibited thermo and pH dual‐responsive properties in water. Importantly, these responsivities could be readily adjusted by changing the polymer composition as well as the polymer concentration in aqueous solution. Moreover, in vitro evaluation demonstrated that hyperbranched poly(amine‐ether)s showed low cytotoxicity and efficient cell internalization against NIH 3T3 cell lines. These results suggest that these backbone thermo and pH dual‐responsive hyperbranched poly(amine‐ether)s are promising materials for biomedicine. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The grafting of the potassium alkoxide derivative of poly(ethylene oxide) on poly(methyl methacrylate) in homogeneous solution in toluene was studied. The alkoxide was prepared by reaction with potassium metal with methanolic potassium methoxide, or with potassium naphthalene. The last was the most suitable for the systematic investigation of the grafting process. Soluble graft polymers were formed, and essentially the initial poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) participated in the production of graft polymer. The composition of the graft polymers and the frequency of grafting of the side chains were determined by NMR. The solubility of the graft polymers in methanol and water increased with increasing PEO contents, while the melting ranges decreased. Fractionation of the crude graft polymers showed that the grafting reaction was random, and graft polymers containing one PEO side chain per about 10–170 MMA units were obtained.  相似文献

Choose sides: differential polymer adhesion   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
AFM-based single molecule desorption measurements were performed on surface end-grafted poly(acrylic acid) monolayers as a function of the pH of the aqueous buffer to study the adhesion properties of polymers that bridge two surfaces. These properties were found to depend on the adhesion forces of both surfaces in a differential manner, which is explained with a simple model in analogy to the Bell-Evans formalism used in dynamic force spectroscopy. The measured interaction forces between the poly(acrylic acid) chains and silicon nitride AFM tips depend on the grafting density of the polymer monolayers as well as on the contour length of the polymer chains. This study demonstrates that the stability of polymer bridges is determined by the adhesion strengths on both surfaces, which can be tuned by using pH-dependent polyelectrolyte monolayers.  相似文献

Critical surface tensions γc of poly(vinyl butyral) and poly(vinyl benzal) multilayers built up by the Langmuir-Blodgett method were measured with polyhydric alcohols and n-alkanes. The γc values of both polymer multilayers increased with increasing pressures of the piston oils used to control pressures of polymers on the water surface during deposition. The γc value of poly(vinyl butyral) multilayers built up to lower pressure of the piston oil was approximately consistent with a crystalline hydrocarbon surface, while the γc value of the multilayer built up to higher pressure of the piston oil was approximately consistent with a—CH3 rather than a ? CH2 ? CH2? surface. All results for γc values of poly(vinyl benzal) multilayers were very close to the γc value of benzene ringrich surface. The γc value of the multilayer built up to lower pressure of the piston oil almost coincided with the γc value for amorphous polystyrene, while the γc value for the multilayer built up to higher pressure of the piston oil was in fair agreement with γc for an aromatic ring edge in the crystalline state. Values of γsd, the dispersion force contribution to the surface free energy of multilayers calculated by Fowkes' relation, were in fair agreement with the corresponding observed γc values, respectively. It is concluded from these measurements that orientations and surface structures in both polymer multilayers are affected by pressure change of piston oils. The properties on monolayers of two polymers at a air-water interface and on barium stearate multilayers are also presented.  相似文献

The exchange of the protonatable polymer, poly(2-ethylacrylic acid) (PEAA), has been studied with vesicle membranes containing cholesterol from 0 to 60 mol% or PEG2000-lipid (5 mol%). The release of an entrapped dye from 100 nm extruded liposomes was used as an assay for membrane perturbation by the polymer as a function of pH. The inclusion of cholesterol was found to reduce the pH at which the polymer caused release of the dye from the lipid vesicles, and the degree of polymer protonation (i.e., degree of hydrophobicity) correlated well with the increase in elastic expansion modulus of the vesicle bilayer. The results are discussed in terms of a balance between polymer solubility and membrane expansion. With respect to the PEG barrier, the presence of 5 mol% PEG2000, which represents full surface coverage, did not prevent PEAA from inducing contents release, demonstrating that highly hydrated polymeric layers are not effective barriers for other water soluble polymers, and may point to some association between the two polymers.  相似文献

Novel hyperbranched poly(amido amine)s containing tertiary amines in the backbones and acryl as terminal groups were synthesized via the Michael addition polymerizations of trifunctional amines with twofold molar diacrylamide. The hyperbranched structures of these poly(amido amine)s were verified by 13C NMR (INVGATE). The polymerization mechanisms were clarified by following the polymerization process with NMR method, and the results show that the reactivity of secondary amine formed in situ is much lower than that of the secondary amine in 1‐(2‐aminoethyl) piperazine (AEPZ) ring and the primary amine. The secondary amine formed in situ was almost kept out of the reaction before the primary and secondary amines in AEPZ were consumed, leading to the formation of the AB2 intermediate, and the further reaction of the AB2 yielded the hyperbranched polymers. The molecular weights and properties of poly(amindo amine)s obtained were characterized by GPC, DSC, and TGA, respectively. Based on the reaction of active acryl groups in the polymers obtained with glucosamine, hyperbranched polymers containing sugar were formed. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
