A metal-organic framework nanocomposite was synthesized and applied to speciation analysis of Se(IV) and Se(VI). The sorbent is composed of MIL-101(Cr) and magnetite nanoparticles modified with dithiocarbamate. It is capably of selectively extracting Se(IV) at pH?=?1.85, while Se(VI) remains in solution. The total amount of selenium can then be determined by reducing Se(VI) to Se(IV) and also extracting it. The extraction parameters were optimized by employing design-of-experiments methodology. Selenium was then quantified by electrothermal AAS. Figures of merit include (a) a 10 ng·L?1 limit of detection, (b) a linear response in the 30 ng·L?1 to 10 μg·L?1 concentration range, and (a) a relative standard deviation of <11.5% for Se(IV). The method was validated by analyzing certified reference materials (water and tomato leaves). It was also applied to the speciation analysis of Se(IV) and Se(VI) in (spiked) water samples and of total selenium in agricultural samples.

The authors describe a dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical immunoassay for the tumor marker carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). The method employs the rhodamine dye Rh123 with red color and absorption maximum at 500 nm for spectral sensitization, and a 3D nanocomposite prepared from graphene oxide and MoS2 acting as the photoelectric conversion layer. The nanocomposite with flower-like 3D architectures was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and UV-vis diffuse reflectometry. A photoelectrochemical sandwich immunoassay was developed that is based on the use of the nanocomposite and based on the specific binding of antibody and antigen, and by using a secondary antibody labeled with Rh123 and CdS (Ab2-Rh123@CdS). Under optimal conditions and at a typical working voltage of 0 V (vs. Hg/HgCl2), the photocurrent increases linearly 10 pg mL?1 to 80 ng mL?1 CEA concentration range, with a 3.2 pg mL?1 detection limit.
Graphical abstract Flower-like GO-MoS2 complex with high efficiency of electron transport was synthesized to construct photoelectrochemical platform. The sandwich-type immunoassay was built on this platform based on specific binding of antigen and antibody. Carcinoembryonic antigen in sample was detected sensitively by using sensitization of rhodamine dye Rh123 as signal amplification strategy.

We describe a label-free electrochemical immunosensor for the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). It is based on a nanocomposite consisting of electrochemically reduced graphene oxide, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), and poly(indole-6-carboxylic acid). Coupled to nanoparticle-amplification techniques and modified with ionic liquid (IL), this immunoassay shows high sensitivity and good selectivity for CEA. At the best working voltage of 0.95 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), the lower detection limit is 0.02 ng·mL?1, and the response to CEA is linear in the range from 0.02 to 90 ng·mL?1. The method was applied to the determination of CEA in spiked serum samples and gave recoveries in the range from 98.5 % to 102 %.

A stir foam composed of graphene oxide, poly(ethylene glycol) and natural latex (GO-PEG-NL) was prepared for use in micro-solid phase extraction sorbent of preservative agents and antioxidants from cosmetic products. The extracted analytes were quantified by GC-MS. Under the optimized conditions, the calibration plots are linear in the concentration ranges between 5.0 μg·L?1 to 1.0 mg·L?1 for benzoic acid, of 10.0 μg·L?1 to 1.0 mg·L?1 for 2-methyl-3-isothiazolinone (MI), and between 1.0 μg·L?1 and 1.0 mg·L?1 for both 3-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole (BHA) and 2,6-di-tert-butyl-p-hydroxytoluene (BHT). The LODs are 1.0 μg·L?1 for benzoic acid, 5.0 μg·L?1 for MI and 0.5 μg·L?1 for both BHA and BHT. The stir-foam can be easily prepared, is inexpensive and well reproducible (RSDs <3%, for n?=?6). It can be re-used for up to 12 times after which extraction efficiency has dropped to 90%. The method was successfully applied to the determination of preservatives and antioxidants in cosmetic samples. Recoveries from spiked samples ranged between 94.5?±?2.1% and 99.8?±?1.8%.

The authors describe an electrochemical sensor for the breast cancer marker α-lactalbumin (αLA). It is based on the use of printed single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) electrodes that were modified with polycatechol. Impedance-derived electrochemical capacitance spectroscopy (ECS) is applied for detection at an applied potential of ?0.14 V vs. Ag/AgCl reference electrode. The electrode was prepared in a two-step process. First, a dispersion of SWCNTs was drop-cast onto the surface of a poly(ethylene terephthalate) substrate to act as the working electrode. Next, catechol was electrochemically polymerized on the SWCNTs, prior to the immobilization of lysozyme. The strong interaction between lysozyme and αLA induced changes in the redox capacitance which are detected by ECS. The latter shows the device to be capable of detecting αLA in the 20 to 80 ng·mL?1 concentration range. The limit of detection is 9.7 ng·mL?1 at an S/N ratio of 3. The device was used to detect αLA in human blood serum with good recovery results.
Graphical abstract A sensitive biosensor for αLA was prepared by modifying SWCNT electrode with polycatechol and lysozyme. The electrochemical capacitance spectroscopy was used for the first time to selectively detect αLA in the blood in the range from 20 to 80 ng·mL?1.

Diphenyl diselenide was immobilized on chitosan loaded with magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles to give an efficient and cost-effective nanosorbent for the preconcentration of Pb(II), Cd(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions by using effervescent salt-assisted dispersive magnetic micro solid-phase extraction (EA-DM-μSPE). The metal ions were desorbed from the sorbent with 3M nitric acid and then quantified via microflame AAS. The main parameters affecting the extraction were optimized using a one-at-a-time method. Under optimum condition, the limits of detection, linear dynamic ranges, and relative standard deviations (for n?=?3) are as following: Pb(II): 2.0 ng·mL?1; 6.3–900 ng·mL?1; 1.5%. Cd(II): 0.15 ng·mL?1; 0.7–85 ng·mL?1, 3.2%; Ni(II): 1.6 ng·mL?1,.6.0–600. ng·mL?1, 4.1%; Cu(II): 1.2 ng·mL?1, 3.0–300 ng·mL?1, 2.2%. The nanosorbent can be reused at least 4 times.

The authors describe an immunoassay for the determination of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) tumor markers by depositing a polydopamine-Pb(II) nanocomposite on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode. The nanocomposite acts as a redox system that displays a large specific surface and provides a strong current signal at ?0.464 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). After the deposition of PDA-Pb2+ on glassy carbon electrode, the electrode was additionally coated with a chitosan-gold nanocomposite. The immunoassay platform was obtained by immobilization of antibodies against carcinoembryonic antigens by using glutaraldehyde and blocking with bovine albumin. Owing to its large surface, good electrical conductivity and powerful current response, the immunoassay has a wide linear range that extends from 1 fg·mL?1 to 100 ng·mL?1, with a detection limit as low as 0.26 fg·mL?1. The results obtained with this immunoassay when determining CEAs in human serum were found to be consistent with those obtained by ELISAs.

An efficient approach is demonstrated for preparing particles consisting of a silver core and a shell of molecularly imprinted polymer (Ag@MIP). The MIP is prepared by using bisphenol A (BPA) as the template and 4-vinylpyridine as the functional monomer. The Ag@MIP fulfills a dual function in that the silver core acts as a SERS substrate, while the MIP allows for selective recognition of BPA. The Ag@MIP is characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and Raman spectroscopy. The Raman intensity of Ag@MIP is higher than that of bare silver microspheres. The detection limit for BPA is as low as 10?9 mol·L?1.

A nanocomposite was prepared from graphene-like two-dimensional black phosphorene (BP, an allotrope of phosphorus) and nafion (Nf) treated with isopropanol (IP). A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with this nanocomposite was found to be a viable sensor for voltammetric determination of clenbuterol (CLB). Unlike previously reported pure BP, the BP nanocomposite was stable towards water and oxygen. Its morphology, structure, electrochemically active surface area and electrochemical stability were investigated. The BP-Nf (IP) modified GCE displayed good electrochemical stability and electrocatalytic capacity with a low working potential of 0.94 V (vs. SCE), excellent peak current response for CLB in a linear concentration range of 0.06–24 μM with a detection limit of 3.7 nM (3σ/m) and a sensitivity of 0.14 μA·μM?1·cm?2 under optimal conditions. A sensing mechanism for the electro-oxidation of CLB was suggested and verified by density functional theory calculations under imitation of aqueous solution conditions. The sensor was successfully applied to the determination of CLB in bovine meat and bovine serum samples.

The authors report on a disposable sensor for the differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetric (DPASV) determination of the ions Zn(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II). Simultaneous detection is accomplished by using a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) co-modified with an in-situ plated bismuth (Bi)) film and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The synergistic effect of the Bi film, and the large surface and good electrical conductivity of the AuNPs strongly assist in the co-deposition of the three ions. Four well-defined and fully separated anodic stripping peaks, at 540 mV for Zn(II), 50 mV for Pb(II), 140 mV for Bi(III) and 295 mV for Cu(II), all vs. Ag/AgCl, can be seen. The modified SPCE was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Under the optimized conditions, the sensor has a good response to these ions. The detection limits (at an S/N ratio of 3) are 50 ng·L?1 for Zn(II), 20 ng·L?1 for Pb(II), and 30 ng·L?1 for Cu(II). The method was applied to the determination of the 3 ions in spiked lake water samples.

The authors describe an immunochromatographic test for the rapid detection of cardiac dysfunction by quantifying the cardiac markers troponin I (TnI), fatty acid binding protein (FABP), and C-reactive protein (CPR) in serum. The dynamics of the formation of the immuno-complexes between antibodies (labeled with gold nanoparticles) and analytes (biomarkers) during immunochromatography was studied, and requirements are specified in terms of membrane carriers and reaction medium that are necessary to detect these biomarkers with their varying intracellular localizations and physical and chemical properties. The test can be performed within 10 min and enables TnI to be determined in concentrations of ≥?1.0 ng mL?1, FABP in concentrations of ≥?3.8 ng mL?1, and CPR in concentrations of ≥?600 ng mL?1. The results of the new test system correlated well with those obtained by ELISAs as used in cardiodiagnostics. It is emphasized here that simultaneous control of several myocardial biomarkers provides more information on the dynamics and development of the pathological process and enables more effective therapeutic decisions.

The authors describe an array for chemiluminescence (CL) based determination of cardiac troponin T (cTnT), an important cardiovascular disease marker. The tracing tag consists of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) loaded with guanine-rich DNA sequences and detection antibody in a high numerical ratio. The loaded AgNPs were then reacted with hemin to form a hemin/G-quadruplex DNAzyme. A disposable immunosensor array was fabricated by immobilizing capture antibody on corresponding sensing sites on a glass chip. Once a sandwich immunocomplex is formed on the array, the tracing tag catalyzes the CL reaction of the luminol-p-iodophenol and H2O2 system to produce a CL signal, which is collected by a CCD camera. An intuitive CL image is obtained containing all of the spots on the array. Under optimal conditions, the method shows a wide linear range over 4 orders of magnitude (from 0.003 to 270 ng·L?1), a detection limit down to 84 fg·L?1, and a throughput as high as 44 tests·h?1. The results obtained with serum samples are in acceptable agreement with reference values. The AgNP-based tracing tag as well as the immunoassay method shows a promising potential for point-of-care testing for the early clinical diagnosis of cardiovascular disease.

Nitrogen-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes modified with nickel nanoparticles (Ni/N-MWCNT) were prepared by a thermal reduction process starting from urea and Ni(II) salt in an inert atmosphere. The nanocomposite was deposited on a screen printed electrode and characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analyses. The performance of the composite was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The numerous active metal sites with fast electron transfer properties result in enhanced electrocatalytic activity towards the individual and simultaneous detection of catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ), best at 0.21 V for CC and 0.11 V for HQ (vs. Ag/AgCl). For both targets the detection limit (S/N of 3) was 9 nM (CC) and 11 nM (HQ), and the Ni/N-MWCNT-electrode showed linear response from 0.1–300 μM CC, and 0.3–300 μM HQ. The electrode is selective over many potentially interfering ions. It was applied to the analysis of spiked water samples and gave satisfactory recoveries. It also is sensitive for CC (5.396 μA·μM?1 cm?2) and HQ (5.1577 μA·μM?1 cm?2), highly active, durable, acceptably repeatable and highly reproducible.

A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with a nanocomposite consisting of tetraoctylammonium bromide (TOAB), C60 fullerene, and palladium nanorods (PdNRs). The PdNRs were hydrothermally prepared and had a typical width of 20 ± 2 nm. The nanocomposite forms stable films on the GCE and exhibits a reversible redox pair for the C60/C60 ? system while rendering the surface to be positively charged. The modified GCE was applied to fabricate an electrochemical biosensor for detecting acetylcholinesterase (AChE) by measurement of the amount of thiocholine formed from acetylthiocholine, best at a working voltage of ?0.19 V (vs. SCE). The detection scheme is based on (a) measurement of the activity of ethyl paraoxon-inhibited AChE, and (b) measurement of AChE activity after reactivation with pralidoxime (2-PAM). Compared to the conventional methods using acetylthiocholine as a substrate, the dual method presented here provides data on the AChE activity after inhibition and subsequent reactivation, thereby yielding credible data on reactivated enzyme activity. The linear analytical range for AChE activity extends from 2.5 U L?1 to 250 kU·L?1, and the detection limit is 0.83 U L?1.
Graphical abstract Cyclovoltammetric acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity assay is constructed based on the palladium nanorods composited with functionalized C60 fullerene (PdNR/C60 + TOAB), which aims to measure the signal change between ethyl paraoxon-inhibited and subsequent pralidoxime (2-PAM)-reactivated AChE activity.

The article describes a reusable biosensor for Pb(II) ions. A duplex DNA with a terminal amino group and containing a G-quadruplex (G4) aptamer was covalently conjugated to single walled carbon nanotubes on a field effect transistor (FET). The detection scheme is based on the despiralization of the DNA duplex because Pb(II) can induce the G4 aptamer to form a stabilizing G4/Pb(II) complex. This structural change affects the electrical conductivity of SWNTs which serves as the analytical signal. The biosensor was characterized via scanning electron microscopy, Raman, UV-vis, and voltage-current profiles. Under optimized conditions, the relative resistance at 0.02 V increases linearly with the logarithm of the Pb(II) concentration in the range from 1 ng·L?1 to 100 μg·L?1, and the limit of detection is 0.39 ng·L?1. Compared to other sensors, this oner demonstrates superior simplicity, sensitivity, and selectivity even in mixtures of heavy metal ions. It was applied to the determination of Pb(II) in (spiked) water and soil samples and gave good results.
Graphical abstract Schematic of the fabrication a biosensor for Pb(II). It is making use of an SWNT-based FET, G4-DNA and complementary DNA with an amino group. Pb(II) can despiralize the DNA duplex to form a G-quadruplex which affects the electrical conductivity of SWNTs. After each detection, the single complementary strand DNA can rebind the G4-DNA, which makes the biosensor reusable.

A novel ZnO-graphene oxide nanocomposite was prepared and is shown to be a viable coating on fused silica fibers for use in solid phase microextraction (SPME) of diazepam and oxazepam from urine, this followed by thermal desorption and gas chromatographic quantitation using a flame ionization detector. A central composite design was used to optimize extraction time, salt percentage, sample pH and desorption time. Limits of detection are 0.5 μg·L?1 for diazepam and 1.0 μg·L?1 for oxazepam. Repeatability and reproducibility for one fiber (n?=?4), expressed as the relative standard deviation at a concentration of 50 μg·L?1, are 8.3 and 11.3% for diazepam, and 6.7 and 10.1% for oxazepam. The fiber-to-fiber reproducibility is <17.6%. The calibration plots are linear in the 5.0–1000 μg·L?1 diazepam concentration range, and from 1.0–1000 μg·L?1 in case of oxazepam. The fiber for SPME has high chemical and thermal stability (even at 280 °C) after 50 extractions, and does not suffer from a reduction in the sorption capacity.

The family of zearalenones (ZENs) represents a major group of mycotoxins with estrogenic activity. They are produced by Fusarium fungi and cause adverse effects on human health and animal production. The authors describe here a label-free amperometric immunosensor for the direct determination of ZENs. A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was first modified with polyethyleneimine-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Next, gold and platinum nanoparticles (AuPt-NPs) were electro-deposited. This process strongly increased the surface area for capturing a large amount of antibodies and enhanced the electrochemical performance. In a final step, monoclonal antibody against zearalenone was orientedly immobilized on the electrode, this followed by surface blocking with BSA. The resulting biosensor was applied to the voltammetry determination of ZENs, best at a working voltage of 0.18 V (vs SCE). Under optimized conditions, the method displays a wide linear range that extends from 0.005 to 50 ng mL?1, with a limit of detection of 1.5 pg mL?1 (at an S/N ratio of 3). The assay is highly reproducible and selective, and therefore provides a sensitive and convenient tool for determination of such mycotoxins.

The authors describe a fluorometric assay for ochratoxin A (OTA) that is based on the use of graphene oxide and RNase H-aided amplification. On addition of OTA, cAPT is replaced from the APT/cAPT hybridization complex and then hybridizes with RNA labeled with a fluorophore at the 5′-end. Eventually, the fluorophore is released by RNase H cleavage. As the concentration of OTA increases, more cAPTs are displaced, this leading to fluorescence enhancement (best measured at excitation/emission wavelengths of 495/515 nm). This RNase H-assisted cycle response results in strong signal amplification. The limit of detection, calculated on the basis of a signal to noise ratio of 3, is 0.08 ng·mL?1. Response is linear in the 0.08–200 ng·mL?1 OTA concentration range. The method is highly selective for OTA over ochratoxin B and aflatoxin B1. It was applied to the determination of OTA in red wine samples spiked at levels of 1, 7, and 50 ng·mL?1, and the recoveries ranged from 90.9 to 112%.

A magnetic sorbent was fabricated by coating the magnetized graphene oxide with polystyrene (PS) to obtain a sorbent of the type GO-Fe3O4@PS. The chemical composition and morphology of the sorbent were characterized. The sorbent was employed for the enrichment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from water samples. Various parameters affecting the enrichment were investigated. The PAHs were then quantified by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection. Linear responses were found in the range of 0.03–100 ng mL?1 for naphthalene and 2-methylnaphthalene, and of 0.01–100 ng mL?1 for fluorene and anthracene. The detection limits (at an S/N ratio of 3) range between 3 and 10 pg mL?1. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) for five replicates at three concentration levels (0.05, 5 and 50 ng mL?1) of analytes ranged from 4.9 to 7.4%. The method was applied to the analysis of spiked real water samples. Relative recoveries are between 95.8 and 99.5%, and RSD% are <8.4%.

A polydopamine-based molecularly imprinted polymer was deposited on the surface of magnetite (ferroferric oxide) nanoparticles (Fe3O4@PDA MIPs) and is shown to be an efficient and fairly specific sorbent for the extraction of various ochratoxins. The MIPs were characterized by IR spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The adsorption capacities, evaluated through the langmuir adsorption isotherm model, are 1.8, 0.23 and 0.17 mg·g?1 for ochratoxin A, ochratoxin B and ochratoxin C, respectively. Parameters such as the amount of magnetic MIPs, pH value, time for ultrasonication, elution solvent and volume were optimized. Following desorption from the MIP with acetonitrile, the ochratoxins were quantified by HPLC with fluorometric detection. Under optimal experimental conditions, the calibration plots are linear in the range of 0.01–1.0 ng·mL?1 of OTA, 0.02–2.0 ng·mL?1 of OTB, and 0.002–0.2 ng·mL?1 of OTC. The LODs are between 1.8 and 18 pg·mL?1, and the recoveries from spiked samples are 71.0% - 88.5%, with RSDs of 2.3–3.8% in case of rice and wine samples.
