In this paper, we find suitable initial conditions for the cylindrical Korteweg‐de Vries equation by first solving exactly the initial‐value problem for localized solutions of the underlying axisymmetric linear long‐wave equation. The far‐field limit of the solution of this linear problem then provides, through matching, an initial condition for the cylindrical Korteweg‐de Vries equation. This initial condition is associated only with the leading wave front of the far‐field limit of the linear solution. The main motivation is to resolve the discrepancy between the exact mass conservation law, and the “mass” conservation law for the cylindrical Korteweg‐de Vries equation. The outcome is that in the linear initial‐value problem all the mass is carried behind the wave front, and then the “mass” in the initial condition for the cylindrical Korteweg‐de Vries equation is zero. Hence, the evolving solution in the cylindrical Korteweg‐de Vries equation has zero “mass.” This situation arises because, unlike the well‐known unidirectional Korteweg‐de Vries equation, the solution of the initial‐value problem for the axisymmetric linear long‐wave problem contains both outgoing and ingoing waves, but in the cylindrical geometry, the latter are reflected at the origin into outgoing waves, and eventually the total outgoing solution is a combination of these and those initially generated.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the integrability and equivalence relationships of six coupled Korteweg–de Vries equations. It is shown that the six coupled Korteweg–de Vries equations are identical under certain invertible transformations. We reconsider the matrix representations of the prolongation algebra for the Painlevé integrable coupled Korteweg–de Vries equation in [Appl. Math. Lett. 23 (2010) 665‐669] and propose a new Lax pair of this equation that can be used to construct exact solutions with vanishing boundary conditions. It is also pointed out that all the six coupled Korteweg–de Vries equations have fourth‐order Lax pairs instead of the fifth‐order ones. Moreover, the Painlevé integrability of the six coupled Korteweg–de Vries equations are examined. It is proved that the six coupled Korteweg–de Vries equations are all Painlevé integrable and have the same resonant points, which further determines the equivalence among them. Finally, the auto‐Bäcklund transformation and exact solutions of one of the six coupled Korteweg–de Vries equations are proposed explicitly. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The Korteweg‐de Vries equation, Boussinesq equation, and many other equations can be formally derived as approximate equations for the two‐dimensional water wave problem in the limit of long waves. Here we consider the classical problem concerning the validity of these equations for the water wave problem in an infinitely long canal without surface tension. We prove that the solutions of the water wave problem in the long‐wave limit split up into two wave packets, one moving to the right and one to the left, where each of these wave packets evolves independently as a solution of a Korteweg‐de Vries equation. Our result allows us to describe the nonlinear interaction of solitary waves. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

We consider the Korteweg–de Vries equation with a source. The source depends on the solution as polynomials with constant coefficients. Using the Painlevé test we show that the generalized Korteweg–de Vries equation is not integrable by the inverse scattering transform. However there are some exact solutions of the generalized Korteweg–de Vries equation for two forms of the source. We present these exact solutions.  相似文献

The adiabatic evolution of perturbed solitary wave solutions to an extended Sasa‐Satsuma (or vector‐valued modified Korteweg–de Vries) model governing nonlinear internal gravity propagation in a continuously stratified fluid is considered. The transport equations describing the evolution of the solitary wave parameters are determined by a direct multiple‐scale asymptotic expansion and independently by phase‐averaged conservation relations for an arbitrary perturbation. As an example, the adiabatic evolution associated with a dissipative perturbation is explicitly determined. Unlike the case with the dissipatively perturbed modified Korteweg–de Vries equation, the adiabatic asymptotic expansion for the Sasa‐Satsuma model considered here is not exponentially nonuniform and no shelf region emerges in the lee‐side of the propagating solitary wave.  相似文献

In this paper, we extend the basic Exp‐function method to nonlinear lattice differential equations for constructing multi‐wave and rational solutions for the first time. We consider a differential‐difference analogue of the Korteweg–de Vries equation to elucidate the solution procedure. Our approach is direct and unifying in the sense that the bilinear formalism of the equation studied becomes redundant. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We study the Cauchy initial‐value problem for the Benjamin‐Ono equation in the zero‐dispersion limit, and we establish the existence of this limit in a certain weak sense by developing an appropriate analogue of the method invented by Lax and Levermore to analyze the corresponding limit for the Korteweg–de Vries equation. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

We study the generalized Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation and the Korteweg–de Vries–Burgers (KdVB) equation with periodic in the spatial variable boundary conditions. For various values of parameters, in a sufficiently small neighborhood of the zero equilibrium state we construct asymptotics of periodic solutions and invariant tori. Separately we consider the case when the stability spectrum of the zero solution contains a countable number of roots of the characteristic equation. In this case we state a special nonlinear boundary-value problem which plays the role of a normal form and determines the dynamics of the initial problem.  相似文献

We derive a new ( 2 + 1)‐dimensional Korteweg–de Vries 4 (KdV4) equation by using the recursion operator of the KdV equation. This study shows that the new KdV4 equation possess multiple soliton solutions the same as the multiple soliton solutions of the KdV hierarchy, but differ only in the dispersion relations. We also derive other traveling wave solutions. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The Korteweg—de Vries and nonlinear Schrödinger equations with an external forcing of distribution type are considered. The reflection coefficient is found to satisfy a nonlinear equation of a certain characteristic form which also appears in the semi-infinite problem.  相似文献

In this work, we study the integrability aspects of the Schamel–Korteweg–de Vries equation that play an important role in studying the effect of electron trapping on the nonlinear interaction of ion‐acoustic waves by including a quasi‐potential. Lie symmetry analysis together with the simplest equation method and Kudryashov method is used to obtain exact traveling wave solutions for this equation. In addition, conservation laws are constructed using two different techniques, namely, the multiplier method and the new conservation theorem. Using the conservation laws and symmetries of the underlying equation, double reduction and exact solution were also constructed. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The nonlinear Korteweg–de Vries (KdVE) equation is solved numerically using both Lagrange polynomials based differential quadrature and cosine expansion‐based differential quadrature methods. The first test example is travelling single solitary wave solution of KdVE and the second test example is interaction of two solitary waves, whereas the other three examples are wave production from solitary waves. Maximum error norm and root mean square error norm are computed, and numerical comparison with some earlier works is done for the first two examples, the lowest four conserved quantities are computed for all test examples. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We will propose a unified algebraic method to construct Jacobi elliptic function solutions to differential–difference equations (DDEs). The solutions to DDEs in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions sn, cn and dn have a unified form and can be presented through solving the associated algebraic equations. To illustrate the effectiveness of this method, we apply the algorithm to some physically significant DDEs, including the discrete hybrid equation, semi‐discrete coupled modified Korteweg–de Vries and the discrete Klein–Gordon equation, thereby generating some new exact travelling periodic solutions to the discrete Klein–Gordon equation. A procedure is also given to determine the polynomial expansion order of Jacobi elliptic function solutions to DDEs. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A numerical method for solving the coupled Korteweg‐de Vries (CKdV) equation based on the collocation method with quintic B‐spline finite elements is set up to simulate the solution of CKdV equation. Invariants and error norms are studied wherever possible to determine the conservation properties of the algorithm. Simulation of single soliton, interaction of two solitons, and birth of solitons are presented. A linear stability analysis shows the scheme to be unconditionally stable. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq, 2009  相似文献

Rossby Solitary Waves in the Presence of a Critical Layer   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
This study considers the evolution of weakly nonlinear long Rossby waves in a horizontally sheared zonal current. We consider a stable flow so that the nonlinear time scale is long. These assumptions enable the flow to organize itself into a large‐scale coherent structure in the régime where a competition sets in between weak nonlinearity and weak dispersion. This balance is often described by a Korteweg‐de‐Vries equation. The traditional assumption of a weak amplitude breaks down when the wave speed equals the mean flow velocity at a certain latitude, due to the appearance of a singularity in the leading‐order equation, which strongly modifies the flow in a critical layer. Here, nonlinear effects are invoked to resolve this singularity, because the relevant geophysical flows have high Reynolds numbers. Viscosity is introduced in order to render the nonlinear‐critical‐layer solution unique, but the inviscid limit is eventually taken. By the method of matched asymptotic expansions, this inner flow is matched at the edges of the critical layer with the outer flow. We will show that the critical‐layer–induced flow leads to a strong rearrangement of the related streamlines and consequently of the potential‐vorticity contours, particularly in the neighborhood of the separatrices between the open and closed streamlines. The symmetry of the critical layer vis‐à‐vis the critical level is also broken. This theory is relevant for the phenomenon of Rossby wave breaking and eventual saturation into a nonlinear wave. Spatially localized solutions are described by a Korteweg‐de‐Vries equation, modified by new nonlinear terms; depending on the critical‐layer shape, this leads to depression or elevation waves. The additional terms are made necessary at a certain order of the asymptotic expansion while matching the inner flow on the dividing streamlines. The new evolution equation supports a family of solitary waves. In this paper we describe in detail the case of a depression wave, and postpone for further discussion the more complex case of an elevation wave.  相似文献

A new class of resonant dispersive shock waves was recently identified as solutions of the Kawahara equation— a Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) type nonlinear wave equation with third‐ and fifth‐order spatial derivatives— in the regime of nonconvex, linear dispersion. Linear resonance resulting from the third‐ and fifth‐order terms in the Kawahara equation was identified as the key ingredient for nonclassical dispersive shock wave solutions. Here, nonlinear wave (Whitham) modulation theory is used to construct approximate nonclassical traveling dispersive shock wave (TDSW) solutions of the fifth‐ order KdV equation without the third derivative term, hence without any linear resonance. A self‐similar, simple wave modulation solution of the fifth order, weakly nonlinear KdV–Whitham equations is obtained that matches a constant to a heteroclinic traveling wave via a partial dispersive shock wave so that the TDSW is interpreted as a nonlinear resonance. The modulation solution is compared with full numerical solutions, exhibiting excellent agreement. The TDSW is shown to be modulationally stable in the presence of sufficiently small third‐order dispersion. The Kawahara–Whitham modulation equations transition from hyperbolic to elliptic type for sufficiently large third‐order dispersion, which provides a possible route for the TDSW to exhibit modulational instability.  相似文献
