Using the least squares, modified Lagrangian function, and some other methods as examples, the capabilities of the new optimization technique based on the quadratic approximation of penalty functions that has been recently proposed by O. Mangasarian for a special class of linear programming problems are demonstrated. The application of this technique makes it possible to use unified matrix operations and standard linear algebra packages (including parallel ones) for solving large-scale problems with sparse strongly structured constraint matrices. With this technique, the computational schemes of some well-known algorithms can take an unexpected form.  相似文献

Classical and modified Lagrangian bounds for the optimal value of optimization problems with a double decomposable structure are examined. For the class of generalized assignment problems, this property of constraints is used to design a Benders algorithm for solving the modified dual problem. Numerical results are presented that compare the quality of classical and modified bounds.  相似文献

Refinement of Lagrangian bounds in optimization problems   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Lagrangian constraint relaxation and the corresponding bounds for the optimal value of an original optimization problem are examined. Techniques for the refinement of the classical Lagrangian bounds are investigated in the case where the complementary slackness conditions are not fulfilled because either the original formulation is nonconvex or the Lagrange multipliers are nonoptimal. Examples are given of integer and convex problems for which the modified bounds improve the classical Lagrangian bounds.  相似文献

Convex relaxations can be used to obtain lower bounds on the optimal objective function value of nonconvex quadratically constrained quadratic programs. However, for some problems, significantly better bounds can be obtained by minimizing the restricted Lagrangian function for a given estimate of the Lagrange multipliers. The difficulty in utilizing Lagrangian duality within a global optimization context is that the restricted Lagrangian is often nonconvex. Minimizing a convex underestimate of the restricted Lagrangian overcomes this difficulty and facilitates the use of Lagrangian duality within a global optimization framework. A branch-and-bound algorithm is presented that relies on these Lagrangian underestimates to provide lower bounds and on the interval Newton method to facilitate convergence in the neighborhood of the global solution. Computational results show that the algorithm compares favorably to the Reformulation–Linearization Technique for problems with a favorable structure.  相似文献

We consider nonlinear programming problems the input data of which are not fixed, but vary in some real compact intervals. The aim of this paper is to determine bounds of the optimal values. We propose a general framework for solving such problems. Under some assumption, the exact lower and upper bounds are computable by using two non-interval optimization problems. While these two optimization problems are hard to solve in general, we show that for some particular subclasses they can be reduced to easy problems. Subclasses that are considered are convex quadratic programming and posynomial geometric programming.  相似文献

Generalized geometric programming (GGP) problems occur frequently in engineering design and management, but most existing methods for solving GGP actually only consider continuous variables. This article presents a new branch-and-bound algorithm for globally solving GGP problems with discrete variables. For minimizing the problem, an equivalent monotonic optimization problem (P) with discrete variables is presented by exploiting the special structure of GGP. In the algorithm, the lower bounds are computed by solving ordinary linear programming problems that are derived via a linearization technique. In contrast to pure branch-and-bound methods, the algorithm can perform a domain reduction cut per iteration by using the monotonicity of problem (P), which can suppress the rapid growth of branching tree in the branch-and-bound search so that the performance of the algorithm is further improved. Computational results for several sample examples and small randomly generated problems are reported to vindicate our conclusions.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the computation of a rigorous lower error bound for the optimal value of convex optimization problems. A discussion of large-scale problems, degenerate problems, and quadratic programming problems is included. It is allowed that parameters, whichdefine the convex constraints and the convex objective functions, may be uncertain and may vary between given lower and upper bounds. The error bound is verified for the family of convex optimization problems which correspond to these uncertainties. It can be used to perform a rigorous sensitivity analysis in convex programming, provided the width of the uncertainties is not too large. Branch and bound algorithms can be made reliable by using such rigorous lower bounds.  相似文献

In this paper, we are concerned with the development of parallel algorithms for solving some classes of nonconvex optimization problems. We present an introductory survey of parallel algorithms that have been used to solve structured problems (partially separable, and large-scale block structured problems), and algorithms based on parallel local searches for solving general nonconvex problems. Indefinite quadratic programming posynomial optimization, and the general global concave minimization problem can be solved using these approaches. In addition, for the minimum concave cost network flow problem, we are going to present new parallel search algorithms for large-scale problems. Computational results of an efficient implementation on a multi-transputer system will be presented.  相似文献

The purpose of this article is to develop a branch-and-bound algorithm using duality bounds for the general quadratically-constrained quadratic programming problem and having the following properties: (i) duality bounds are computed by solving ordinary linear programs; (ii) they are at least as good as the lower bounds obtained by solving relaxed problems, in which each nonconvex function is replaced by its convex envelope; (iii) standard convergence properties of branch-and-bound algorithms for nonconvex global optimization problems are guaranteed. Numerical results of preliminary computational experiments for the case of one quadratic constraint are reported.  相似文献

This article presents a family of semidefinite programming bounds, obtained by Lagrangian duality, for 0–1 quadratic optimization problems with linear or quadratic constraints. These bounds have useful computational properties: they have a good ratio of tightness to computing time, they can be optimized by a quasi-Newton method, and their final tightness level is controlled by a real parameter. These properties are illustrated on three standard combinatorial optimization problems: unconstrained 0–1 quadratic optimization, heaviest $k$ -subgraph, and graph bisection.  相似文献

We investigate methods for solving high-dimensional nonlinear optimization problems which typically occur in the daily scheduling of electricity production: problems with a nonlinear, separable cost function, lower and upper bounds on the variables, and an equality constraint to satisfy the demand. If the cost function is quadratic, we use a modified Lagrange multiplier technique. For a nonquadratic cost function (a penalty function combining the original cost function and certain fuel constraints, so that it is generally not separable), we compare the performance of the gradient-projection method and the reduced-gradient method, both with conjugate search directions within facets of the feasible set. Numerical examples at the end of the paper demonstrate the effectiveness of the gradient-projection method to solve problems with hundreds of variables by exploitation of the special structure.  相似文献

The subject of this article is a class of global optimization problems, in which the variables can be divided into two groups such that, in each group, the functions involved have the same structure (e.g. linear, convex or concave, etc.). Based on the decomposition idea of Benders (Ref. 1), a corresponding master problem is defined on the space of one of the two groups of variables. The objective function of this master problem is in fact the optimal value function of a nonlinear parametric optimization problem. To solve the resulting master problem, a branch-and-bound scheme is proposed, in which the estimation of the lower bounds is performed by applying the well-known weak duality theorem in Lagrange duality. The results of this article concentrate on two subjects: investigating the convergence of the general algorithm and solving dual problems of some special classes of nonconvex optimization problems. Based on results in sensitivity and stability theory and in parametric optimization, conditions for the convergence are established by investigating the so-called dual properness property and the upper semicontinuity of the objective function of the master problem. The general algorithm is then discussed in detail for some nonconvex problems including concave minimization problems with a special structure, general quadratic problems, optimization problems on the efficient set, and linear multiplicative programming problems.  相似文献

Due to its versatility, copositive optimization receives increasing interest in the Operational Research community, and is a rapidly expanding and fertile field of research. It is a special case of conic optimization, which consists of minimizing a linear function over a cone subject to linear constraints. The diversity of copositive formulations in different domains of optimization is impressive, since problem classes both in the continuous and discrete world, as well as both deterministic and stochastic models are covered. Copositivity appears in local and global optimality conditions for quadratic optimization, but can also yield tighter bounds for NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems. Here some of the recent success stories are told, along with principles, algorithms and applications.  相似文献

This paper considers the mathematical properties of discrete or discretized mechanical structures under multiple loadings which are optimal w.r.t. maximal stiffness. We state a topology and/or sizing problem of maximum stiffness design in terms of element volumes and displacements. Multiple loads are handled by minimizing the maximum of compliance of all load cases, i.e., minimizing the maximal sum of displacements along an applied force. Generally, the problem considered may contain constraints on the design variables. This optimization problem is first reformulated in terms of only design variables. Elastic equilibrium is hidden in potential energy terms. It is shown that this transformed objective function is convex and continuous, including infinite values. We deduce that maximum stiffness structures are dependent continuously on the bounds of the element volumes as parameters. Consequently, solutions to sizing problems with small positive lower bounds on the design variables can be considered as good approximations of solutions to topology problems with zero lower bounds. This justifies heuristic approaches such as the well-known stress-rationing method for solving truss topology problems.  相似文献

Lagrangian bounds, i.e. bounds computed by Lagrangian relaxation, have been used successfully in branch and bound bound methods for solving certain classes of nonconvex optimization problems by reducing the duality gap. We discuss this method for the class of partly linear and partly convex optimization problems and, incidentally, point out incorrect results in the recent literature on this subject.  相似文献

Completely positive (CP) tensors, which correspond to a generalization of CP matrices, allow to reformulate or approximate a general polynomial optimization problem (POP) with a conic optimization problem over the cone of CP tensors. Similarly, completely positive semidefinite (CPSD) tensors, which correspond to a generalization of positive semidefinite (PSD) matrices, can be used to approximate general POPs with a conic optimization problem over the cone of CPSD tensors. In this paper, we study CP and CPSD tensor relaxations for general POPs and compare them with the bounds obtained via a Lagrangian relaxation of the POPs. This shows that existing results in this direction for quadratic POPs extend to general POPs. Also, we provide some tractable approximation strategies for CP and CPSD tensor relaxations. These approximation strategies show that, with a similar computational effort, bounds obtained from them for general POPs can be tighter than bounds for these problems obtained by reformulating the POP as a quadratic POP, which subsequently can be approximated using CP and PSD matrices. To illustrate our results, we numerically compare the bounds obtained from these relaxation approaches on small scale fourth-order degree POPs.  相似文献

The quadratic assignment problem (QAP) belongs to the hard core of NP-hard optimization problems. After almost forty years of research only relatively small instances can be solved to optimality. The reason is that the quality of the lower bounds available for exact methods is not sufficient. Recently, lower bounds based on decomposition were proposed for the so called rectilinear QAP that proved to be the strongest for a large class of problem instances. We investigate the strength of these bounds when applied not only at the root node of a search tree but as the bound function used in a Branch-and-Bound code solving large scale QAPs.  相似文献

In Floudas and Visweswaran (1990, 1993), a deterministic global optimization approach was proposed for solving certain classes of nonconvex optimization problems. An algorithm, GOP, was presented for the solution of the problem through a series ofprimal andrelaxed dual problems that provide valid upper and lower bounds respectively on the global solution. The algorithm was proved to have finite convergence to an -global optimum. In this paper, new theoretical properties are presented that help to enhance the computational performance of the GOP algorithm applied to problems of special structure. The effect of the new properties is illustrated through application of the GOP algorithm to a difficult indefinite quadratic problem, a multiperiod tankage quality problem that occurs frequently in the modeling of refinery processes, and a set of pooling/blending problems from the literature. In addition, extensive computational experience is reported for randomly generated concave and indefinite quadratic programming problems of different sizes. The results show that the properties help to make the algorithm computationally efficient for fairly large problems.  相似文献
