We consider an autoparametric system which consists of an oscillator coupled with a parametrically excited subsystem. The oscillator and the subsystem are in one-to-one internal resonance. The excited subsystem is in principal parametric resonance. The system contains the most general type of quadratic and cubic non-linearities. The method of second-order averaging is used to yield a set of autonomous equations of the second-order approximations to the parametric excited system with autoparametric resonance. The Shilnikov-type multi-pulse orbits and chaotic dynamics of the averaged equations are studied in detail. The global bifurcation analysis indicates that there exist the heteroclinic bifurcations and the Shilnikov-type multi-pulse homoclinic orbits in the averaged equations. The results obtained above mean the existence of amplitude-modulated chaos in the Smale horseshoe sense in the parametric excited system with autoparametric resonance. The Shilnikov-type multi-pulse chaotic motions of the parametric excited system with autoparametric resonance are also found by using numerical simulation.

The nonlinear dynamics of a clamped-clamped/sliding inextensional elastic beam subject to a harmonic axial load is investigated. The Galerkin method is used on the coupled bending-bending-torsional nonlinear equations with inertial and geometric nonlinearities and the resulting two second order ordinary differential equations are studied by the method of multiple time seales and by direct numerical integration. The amplitude equations are analyzed for steady and Hopf bifurcations. Depending on the amplitude of excitation, the damping and the ratio of principal flexural rigidities, various qualitatively distinct frequency response diagrams are uncovered and limit cycles and chaotic motions are found. In the truncated two-degree-of-freedom system the transition from periodic to chaotic amplitude-modulated motions is via the process of torus doubling and subsequent destruction of the torus.

Nonlinear flexural vibrations of a rectangular plate with uniform stretching are studied for the case when it is harmonically excited with forces acting normal to the midplane of the plate. The physical phenomena of interest here arise when the plate has two distinct linear modes of vibration with nearly the same natural frequency. It is shown that, depending on the spatial distribution of the external forces, the plate can undergo harmonic motions either in one of the two individual modes or in a mixed-mode. Stable single-mode and mixed-mode solutions can also coexist over a wide range in the amplitudes and frequency of excitation. For low damping levels, the presence of Hopf bifurcations in the mixed-mode response leads to complicated amplitude-modulated dynamics including period doubling bifurcations, chaos, coexistence of multiple chaotic motions, and crisis, whereby the chaotic attractors suddenly disappear and the plate resumes small amplitude harmonic motions in a single-mode. Numerical results are presented specifically for 1 : 1 resonance in the (1, 2) and (3, 1) plate modes.

The problem of parametric control of plane motions of a two-mass pendulum (swing) is considered. The swing model is a weightless rod with two lumped masses one of which is fixed on the rod and the other slides along it within bounded limits. The control is the distance from the suspension point to the moving point. The proposed control law of swing excitation and damping consists in continuously varying the pendulumsuspension length depending on the phase state. The stability of various controlled motions, including the motions near the upper and lower equilibria, is studied. The Lyapunov functions that prove the asymptotic stability and instability of the pendulum lower position in the respective cases of the pendulum damping and excitation are constructed for the proposed control law. The influence of the viscous friction forces on the pendulum stable motions and the onset of stagnation regions in the case of its excitation is analyzed. The theoretical results are confirmed by graphical representation of the numerical results.

We study the response of a single-degree-of-freedom system with cubic nonlinearities to an amplitude-modulated excitation whose carrier frequency is much higher than the natural frequency of the system. The only restriction on the amplitude modulation is that it contain frequencies much lower than the carrier frequency of the excitation. We apply the theory to different types of amplitude modulation and find that resonant excitation of the system may occur under some conditions.

Dynamical behavior of nonlinear oscillator under combined parametric and forcing excitation, which includes van der Pol damping, is very complex. In this paper, Melnikov'smethod is used to study the heteroclinic orbit bifurcations, subharmonic bifurcations and chaos in this system. Smale horseshoes and chaotic motions can occur from odd subharmonic bifurcation of infinite order in this system for various resonant cases. Finally the numerical computing method is used to study chaotic motions of this system. The results achieved reveal some new phenomena.

In this paper, we propose a parametrically excited pendulum with irrational nonlinearity which comprises a simple pendulum linked by a linear spring under base excitation. This parametric vibration system exhibits bistable state and discontinuous characteristics due to the geometry configuration. For small oscillations, this system can be described by Mathieu equation coupled with SD (Smooth and Discontinuous) oscillator whose dynamic response is examined analytically by using the averaging method in both smooth and discontinuous case. Numerical simulations are carried out to demonstrate the complicated dynamic behavior of multiple periodic motions and different types of chaotic motions.

This work investigates nonlinear dynamic response of circular rings rotating with spin speed which involves small fluctuations from a constant average value. First, Hamilton's principle is applied and the equations of motion are expressed in terms of a single time coordinate, representing the amplitude of an in-plane bending mode. For nonresonant excitation or for slowly rotating rings, a complete analysis is presented by employing phase plane methodologies. For rapidly rotating rings, periodic spin speed variations give rise to terms leading to parametric excitation. In this case, the vibrations that occur under principal parametric resonance are analyzed by applying the method of multiple scales. The resulting modulation equations possess combinations of trivial and nontrivial constant steady state solutions. The existence and stability properties of these motions are first analyzed in detail. Also, analysis of the undamped slow-flow equations provides a global picture for the possible motions of the ring. In all cases, the analytical predictions are verified and complemented by numerical results. In addition to periodic response, these results reveal the existence of unbounded as well as transient chaotic response of the rotating ring.

The nonlinear behavior of a string-beam coupled system subjected to parametric excitation is investigated in this paper. Using the method of multiple scales, a set of first order nonlinear differential equations are obtained. A numerical simulation is carried out to verify analytic predictions and to study the steady-state response, stable solutions and chaotic motions. The numerical results show that the system behavior includes multiple solutions, and jump phenomenon in the resonant frequency response curves. It is also shown that chaotic motions occur and the system parameters have different effects on the nonlinear response of the string-beam coupled system. Results are compared to previously published work.

In this paper, we use the asymptotic perturbation method based on the Fourier expansion and the temporal rescaling to investigate the nonlinear oscillations and chaotic dynamics of a simply supported rectangular plate made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) subjected to a through-thickness temperature field together with parametric and external excitations. Material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependent. Based on the Reddy’s third-order plate theory, the governing equations of motion for the plate are derived using the Hamilton’s principle. The Galerkin procedure is employed to obtain a two-degree-of-freedom nonlinear system including the quadratic and cubic nonlinear terms. The resonant case considered here is 1:2 internal resonance, principal parametric resonance-1/2 subharmonic resonance. Based on the averaged equation in polar coordinate form, the stability of steady state solutions is analyzed. The phase portrait, waveform and Poincaré map are used to analyze the periodic and chaotic motions of the FGM rectangular plate. It is found that the FGM rectangular plate exhibits the chaotic motions under certain circumstances. It is seen that the nonlinear dynamic responses of the FGM rectangular plate are more sensitive to transverse excitation. The excitation force can be used as a controlling factor which can change the response of the FGM rectangular plate from periodic motion to the chaotic motion.

The bifurcation dynamics of shallow arch which possesses initial deflection under periodic excitation for the case of 1∶2 internal resonance is studied in this paper. The whole parametric plane is divided into several different regions according to the types of motions; then the distribution of steady state motions of shallow arch on the plane of physical parameters is obtained. Combining with numerical method, the dynamics of the system in different regions, especially in the Hopf bifurcation region, is studied in detail. The rule of the mode interaction and the route to chaos of the system is also analysed at the end. Nonlinear heave-roll coupling and ship rolling
A nonlinear model for simulating the heave-roll motions of ships in following waves is presented. The parametric excitation is modeled by a Hill's type equation, instead of the conventional Mathieu's equation. The model includes not only the linear but also the quadratic coupling term. Instability conditions for parametrically excited rolling motions are derived using the harmonic balance method. The results are verified by numerical analyses. The effects of including the quadratic coupling term on the instability conditions and nonlinear responses are studied. The complex dynamic behaviour of the coupled system in the various instability regions is also investigated. Bifurcations of the flip, fold and pitchfork types are observed in the Poincaré mapping of the numerically simulated responses. Chaotic motions leading to boundary crises and inevitable capsize are also reported.

This work examines dynamical behavior of a nonlinear oscillator with symmetric potential that models a quarter-car forced by the road profile under parametric excitation. The parametric resonance of a harmonically excited nonlinear quarter-car model with position and velocity time-delayed active control are investigated. We focus on the influence of delay and parametric excitation in the system. The influence of parametric excitation, time-delay and feedback gain parameters on the stability of the steady state response are investigated. By means of Melnikov's method, conditions for onset of chaos resulting from heteroclinic bifurcation is derived analytically and numerically.

The nonlinear planar response of a hinged-clamped beam to a principal parametric resonance of either its first or second mode or a combination parametric resonance of the additive type of its first two modes is investigated. The analysis accounts for mid-plane stretching, a static axial load, a restraining spring at one end, and modal damping. The natural frequency of the second mode is approximately three times the natural frequency of the first mode for a range of static axial loads, resulting in a three-to-one internal resonance. The method of multiple scales is used to attack directly the governing nonlinear integral-partial-differential equation and associated boundary conditions and derive three sets of four first-order nonlinear ordinary-differential equations describing the modulation of the amplitudes and phases of the first two modes in the cases of (a) principal parametric resonance of either the first or the second mode, and (b) a combination parametric resonance of the additive type of these modes. Periodic motions and periodically and chaotically modulated motions of the beam are determined by investigating the equilibrium and dynamic solutions of the modulation equations. For the case of principal parametric resonance of the first mode or combination parametric resonance of the additive type, trivial and two-mode solutions are possible, whereas for the case of parametric resonance of the second mode, trivial, single, and two-mode solutions are possible. The trivial and two-mode equilibrium solutions of the modulation equations may undergo either a supercritical or a subcritical Hopf bifurcation, depending on the magnitude of the axial load. For some excitation parameters, we found complex responses including period-doubling bifurcations and blue-sky catastrophes.

Nonlinear static and dynamic behaviour of a simply supported fluid-conveying tube, which has a constant inner diameter and a variable thickness is analysed analytically and numerically. Nonlinear static bending is considered in two loading cases: (i) a tube subjected to supercritical axial compressive forces acting at its edges or (ii) a tube loaded by concentrated bending moments, which provide a symmetrical (with respect to the mid-span) shape of a tube. The nonlinear governing equations of motions are derived by using Hamilton's principle. The elementary plug flow theory of an incompressible inviscid fluid is adopted for modelling a fluid–structure interaction. The flow velocity is taken as the sum of a principal constant ‘mean’ velocity component and a fairly small pulsating component. Firstly, eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes of a deformed tube are found from linearised equations of motions. Then resonant nonlinear oscillations of a tube about its deformed static equilibrium position in a plane of static bending are considered. A multiple scales method is used and a weak resonant excitation by the flow pulsation is considered in a single-mode regime and in a bi-modal regime (in the case of an internal parametric resonance) and the stability of each of them is examined. The brief parametric study of these regimes of motions is carried out.

Studied in this work are the formulation of equations of motion and the response to parametric excitation of a uniform cantilever beam moving longitudinally over a single bilateral support. The equations of motion are generated by using assumed modes to discretize the beam, by regarding the support as a kinematic constraint, and by employing an alternate form of Kane's method that is particularly well suited to systems subject to constraints. Instability information is developed using the results of perturbation analysis for harmonic longitudinal motions of small amplitude and with Floquet theory for general periodic motions of any amplitude. Results demonstrate that definitive instability information can be obtained for a beam moving longitudinally over supports based on the frequencies of free transverse vibration of a beam that is longitudinally fixed.
