Oxygen K-edge X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) of aqueous chloride solutions have been measured for Li(+), Na(+), K(+), NH(4)(+), C(NH(2))(3)(+), Mg(2+), and Ca(2+) at 2 and 4 M cation concentrations. Marked changes in the liquid water XAS are observed upon addition of the various monovalent cation chlorides that are nearly independent of the identity of the cation. This indicates that interactions with the dissolved monovalent cations do not significantly perturb the unoccupied molecular orbitals of water molecules in the vicinity of the cations and that water-chloride interactions are primarily responsible for the observed spectral changes. In contrast, the addition of the divalent cations engenders changes unique from the case of the monovalent cations, as well as from each other. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the ion-specific spectral variations arise primarily from direct electronic perturbation of the unoccupied orbitals due to the presence of the ions, probably as a result of differences in charge transfer from the water molecules onto the divalent cations.  相似文献

The coordination chemistry of the Schiff base polypyrrolic octaaza macrocycle 1 toward late first-row transition metals was investigated. Binuclear complexes with the divalent cations Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) and with the monovalent cation Cu(I) were prepared and characterized. Air oxidation of the Cu(I) ions in the latter complex to their divalent oxidation state resulted in a change in the coordination mode relative to the macrocycle.  相似文献

To evaluate the risk of contaminant transport by mobile colloids, it seems essential to understand how colloids and associated pollutants behave during their migration through uncontaminated soil or groundwater. In this study, we investigated at pH 4 the influence of flow velocity, humic acid, solution Ca(2+) concentrations, and trace metals (Pb(2+), Cu(2+)) on the transport and deposition of kaolinite particles through a pure crystalline quartz sand as porous medium. A short-pulse chromatographic technique was used to measure colloid deposition. Adsorption of humic acid to the kaolinite increase its negative surface charge and then decrease colloid deposition. Experiments with different flow rates showed that humic-coated kaolinite colloid deposition followed a first-order kinetic rate law. The deposition rate coefficients of humic-coated kaolinite colloids increase with increasing Ca(2+) concentration in the suspension. The effect of trace metals on the mobility is studied by injecting two suspensions with different concentrations of Pb(2+) and Cu(2+). At very low cation concentration, the fraction of colloids retained is low and roughly independent of the nature of divalent cations. At high concentration, the deposition is higher and depends on the affinity of divalent cations toward humic-coated kaolinite colloids.  相似文献

In the standard electrospray ionization mass spectra of many common, low molecular mass organic compounds dissolved in methanol, peaks corresponding to ions with formula [3M + Met](2+) (M = organic molecule, Met = bivalent metal cation) are observed, sometimes with significant abundances. The most common are ions containing Mg(2+), Ca(2+) and Fe(2+). Their presence can be easily rationalized on the basis of typical organic reaction work-up procedures. The formation of [3M + Met](2+) ions has been studied using N-FMOC-proline methyl ester as a model organic ligand and Mg(2+), Ca(2+), Sr(2+), Ba(2+), Fe(2+), Ni(2+), Mn(2+), Co(2+) and Zn(2+) chlorides or acetates as the sources of bivalent cation. It was found that all ions studied form [3M + Met](2+) complexes with N-FMOC-proline methyl ester, some of them at very low concentrations. Transition metal cations generally show higher complexation activity in comparison with alkaline earth metal cations. They are also more specific in the formation of [3M + Met](2+) complexes. In the case of alkaline earth metal cations [2M + Met](2+) and [4M + Met](2+) complex ions are also observed. It has been found that [3M + Met](2+) complex ions undergo specific fragmentation at relatively low energy, yielding fluorenylmethyl cation as a major product. [M + Na](+) ions are much more stable and their fragmentation is not as specific.  相似文献

A new terphenyl-based macrocycle 5 incorporating phenanthroline as a fluorophore has been designed, synthesized and examined for its recognition ability toward various cations (Pb(2+), Hg(2+), Ba(2+), Cd(2+), Ag(+), Zn(2+), Cu(2+), Ni(2+), Co(2+), K(+), Mg(2+), Na(+) and Li(+)) by UV-vis, fluorescence and NMR spectroscopy. The receptor 5 showed highly selective 'Off-On' fluorescence signaling behavior for Zn(2+) ions in THF. Interestingly, the addition of H(2)PO(4)(-) ions to the [5-Zn] complex regulates the binding site for additional Zn(2+) ions and hence leads to a blue-shifted emission band.  相似文献

Two novel symmetric polytopic ligands L(1) and L(2) have been synthesized. They are composed of three 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane macrocycles which are connected to a central tren moiety via an ethylene and a trimethylene bridge, respectively. The complexation potential and the speciation diagrams of L(1) and L(2) towards Cu(2+) and Ni(2+) were determined by spectrophotometric and potentiometric titrations. Insight into the geometry of the Cu(2+) complexes is provided by UV-VIS and EPR spectroscopy. The simplified ligands L(3) and L(4) are utilized as references for an aminoethyl- and a tren-substituted tetraaza macrocycle to help assign the EPR spectra of the polytopic ligands L(1) and L(2). At a metal-to-ligand ratio of 3 : 1, the metal cations are preferentially bound to the tetraaza macrocycles of L(1) and L(2) in a square planar geometry. At high pH values, a nitrogen atom of the tren moiety in L(1) serves as an additional ligand in an axial position leading to a square pyramidal coordination around Cu(2+), whereas in L(2) no such geometry change is observed. At a metal-to-ligand ratio of 4 : 1, the additional metal cation resides in the central tren moiety of L(1) and L(2). However, in contrast to the typical trigonal bipyramidal geometry found in the [Cutren](2+) complex, the fourth Cu(2+) has a square pyramidal coordination caused by the interaction with the Cu(2+) cations in the macrocycles (as evidenced by EPR spectra). Since the sequence of metal complexation is such that the first three metal ions always bind to the three macrocycles of L(1) and L(2) and the fourth to the tren unit, it is possible to prepare heteronuclear complexes such as [Cu(3)NiL](8+) or [Ni(3)CuL](8+), which can be unambiguously identified by their spectral properties.  相似文献

Many important classes of biomolecules require divalent cations for optimal activity, making these ions essential for biologically relevant structural studies. Bicelle mixtures composed of short-chain and long-chain lipids are often used in solution- and solid-state NMR structure determination; however, the phase diagrams of these useful orienting media and membrane mimetics are sensitive to other solution components. Therefore, we have investigated the effect of varying concentrations of four divalent cations, Ca(2+), Mg(2+), Zn(2+), and Cd(2+), on cholesterol sulfate-stabilized DMPC/DHPC bicelles. We found that low concentrations of all the divalent ions are tolerated with minimal perturbation. At higher concentrations Zn(2+) and Cd(2+) disrupt the magnetically aligned phase while Ca(2+) and Mg(2+) produce more strongly oriented phases. This result indicates that divalent cations are not only required to maintain the biological activity of proteins and nucleic acids; they may also be used to manipulate the behavior of the magnetically aligned phase.  相似文献

It has been shown that the DNA aptamer d(G(2)T(2)G(2)TGTG(2)T(2)G(2)) adopts an intramolecular G-quadruplex structure in the presence of K+. Its affinity for trombin has been associated with the inhibition of thrombin-catalyzed fibrin clot formation. In this work, we used a combination of spectroscopy, calorimetry, density, and ultrasound techniques to determine the spectral characteristics, thermodynamics, and hydration effects for the formation of G-quadruplexes with a variety of monovalent and divalent metal ions. The formation of cation-aptamer complexes is relatively fast and highly reproducible. The comparison of their CD spectra and melting profiles as a function of strand concentration shows that K+, Rb+, NH(4)+, Sr(2+), and Ba(2+) form intramolecular cation-aptamer complexes with transition temperatures above 25 degrees C. However, the cations Li+, Na+, Cs+, Mg(2+), and Ca(2+) form weaker complexes at very low temperatures. This is consistent with the observation that metal ions with ionic radii in the range 1.3-1.5 A fit well within the two G-quartets of the complex, while the other cations cannot. The comparison of thermodynamic unfolding profiles of the Sr(2+)-aptamer and K+ -aptamer complexes shows that the Sr(2+)-aptamer complex is more stable, by approximately 18 degrees C, and unfolds with a lower endothermic heat of 8.3 kcal/mol. This is in excellent agreement with the exothermic heats of -16.8 kcal/mol and -25.7 kcal/mol for the binding of Sr(2+) and K+ to the aptamer, respectively. Furthermore, volume and compressibility parameters of cation binding show hydration effects resulting mainly from two contributions: the dehydration of both cation and guanine atomic groups and water uptake upon the folding of a single-strand into a G- quadruplex structure.  相似文献

A new symmetric polioxo ethylene chain fluorescent probe containing 2-aminoanthracene bichromophoric as the terminal group for the alkaline earth metal cation, 2,2'-[oxybis(3-oxapentamethyleneoxy)]-bis[N-(2-anthryl)benzamide)] (1), has been synthesized. The photophysical properties of 1 have been studied by means of absorption, fluorescence spectroscopy, and (1)H NMR. The difference in emission spectra response to concentration of model compound 2-acetamido-anthracene and 1 in acetonitrile implies that intermolecular excited dimers is likely to occur. Fluorescence decay profiles of 2-acetamido-anthracene can be described by a biexponential fit, while three lifetimes, two of which are similar as those of 2-acetamido-anthracene, are found for 1. The third lifetime might be attributed to intramolecular excited dimers. Complex formation with alkaline earth metal ions are investigated in acetonitrile as solvent via fluorimetric titrations. Fluorescence intensity trend of the complex with Mg(2+) differed from those of other alkaline earth metal ions. The compound forms 1:2 (ligand/Mg(2+)) complex with Mg(2+) while formed 1:1 complexes with Ca(2+), Sr(2+), and Ba(2+), producing large hypochromic shifts in the emission spectra and significant cation-induced fluorescence amplifications. On the contrary, the addition of Ca(2+), Sr(2+), or Ba(2+) lead to a decrease in the fluorescence emission first, then an increase and blue shift in emission could be found at the end.  相似文献

DNA polymerases require two divalent metal ions in the active site for catalysis. Mg(2+) has been confirmed to be the most probable cation utilized by most polymerases in vivo. Other metal ions are either potent mutagens or inhibitors. We used structural and topological analyses based on ab initio QM/MM calculations to study human DNA polymerase λ (Polλ) with different metals in the active site. Our results indicate a slightly longer O3'-Pα distance (~3.6 ?) for most inhibitor cations compared to the natural and mutagenic metals (~3.3-3.4 ?). Optimization with a larger basis set for the previously reported transition state (TS) structures (Cisneros et al., DNA Repair, 2008, 7, 1824.) gives barriers of 17.4 kcal mol(-1) and 15.1 kcal mol(-1) for the Mg(2+) and Mn(2+) catalyzed reactions respectively. Relying on the key relation between the topological signature of a metal cation and its selectivity within biological systems (de Courcy et al., J. Chem. Theor. Comput., 2010, 6, 1048.) we have performed electron localization function (ELF) topological analyses. These analyses show that all inhibitor and mutagenic metals considered, except Na(+), present a "split" of the outer-shell density of the metal. This "splitting" is not observed for the non-mutagenic Mg(2+) metal. Population and multipole analyses on the ELF basins reveal that the electronic dipolar and quadrupolar polarization is significantly different with Mg(2+) compared to all other cations. Our results shed light at the atomic level on the subtle differences between Mg(2+), mutagenic, and inhibitor metals in DNA polymerases. These results provide a correlation between the electronic distribution of the cations in the active site and the possible consequences on DNA synthesis.  相似文献

Separations of metal cations on a column packed with the strongly acidic cation exchanger Separon SGX CX were investigated in the presence of alpha-hydroxyisobutyric acid (HIBA) in the mobile phase. A retention model based on the general theory of side equilibria was elaborated and relations describing dependences of capacity factors of analytes on the compositon of the mobile phase were derived. Effects of HIBA concentration and pH of the mobile phase on the analyte retention were studied in detail. Stability constants of divalent metal cations (Cd(2+), Co(2+), Mn(2+), Ni(2+) and Zn(2+)) with HIBA were calculated from the experimental dependences of the reciprocal values of capacity factors on the ligand concentration.  相似文献

Adsorption of tetracycline, one of the most widely used antibiotics, onto goethite was studied as a function of pH, metal cations, and humic acid (HA) over a pH range 3-10. Five background electrolyte cations (Li(+), Na(+), K(+), Ca(2+), and Mg(2+)) with a concentration of 0.01 M showed little effect on the tetracycline adsorption at the studied pH range. While the divalent heavy metal cation, Cu(2+), could significantly enhance the adsorption and higher concentration of Cu(2+), stronger adsorption was found. The results indicated that different adsorption mechanisms might be involved for the two types of cations. Background electrolyte cations hardly interfere with the interaction between tetracycline and goethite surfaces because they only form weak outer-sphere surface complexes. On the contrary, Cu(2+) could enhance the adsorption via acting as a bridge ion to form goethite-Cu(2+)-tetracycline surface complex because Cu(2+) could form strong and specific inner-sphere surface complexes. HA showed different effect on the tetracycline sorption under different pH condition. The presence of HA increased tetracycline sorption dramatically under acidic condition. Results indicated that heavy metal cations and soil organic matters have great effects on the tetracycline mobility in the soil environment and eventually affect its exposure concentration and toxicity to organisms.  相似文献

A coumarin-based colorimetric chemosensor 1 was designed and synthesized. It exhibits good sensitivity and selectivity for the copper cation over other cations such as Zn(2+), Cd(2+), Pb(2+), Co(2+), Fe(2+), Ni(2+), Ag(+), and alkali and alkaline earth metal cations both in aqueous solution and on paper-made test kits. The change in color is very easily observed by the naked eye in the presence of Cu(2+) cation, whereas other metal cations do not induce such a change. The quantitative detection of Cu(2+) was preliminarily examined.  相似文献

A series of BODIPY (4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene) derivatives containing ion- and pH-sensory units have been successfully designed and synthesized. One of the compounds was structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Owing to the presence of an ICT absorption band, one of the compounds was found to show pronounced solvatochromic behavior in different organic solvents. Their emission energies in various solvents show a linear dependence on the Lippert solvent parameter. The cation-binding properties of the complexes with different metal ions (alkali metal, alkaline earth metal and transition metal ions) have been studied using UV-vis and emission spectroscopies. A 1?:?1 complexation to metal ions (Li(+), Na(+), Mg(2+), Ba(2+), Zn(2+), Cd(2+)) was found for the compound with one azacrown moiety in acetonitrile while another one with two azacrown moieties was shown to form 1?:?2 complexes with Zn(2+) and Mg(2+) cations. Their stability constants have been determined by both UV-vis and emission spectrophotometric methods. By introducing triarylborane moieties into the meso position and the 2-position of the BODIPY skeleton, different electronic absorption spectral changes together with an emission diminution were observed in response to fluoride ions. Ditopic binding study of 5, which was functionalized with both azacrown and triarylborane moieties, showed emission enhancement in the presence of Mg(2+) and F(-). These findings suggest that these BODIPY derivatives are capable of serving as versatile colorimetric and luminescence probes for pH, cations and F(-).  相似文献

Interactions of adenine, cytosine, guanine, and thymine with Na(+), Mg(2+), and Zn(2+) cations were studied using an approximate resolution of identity correlated second-order MP2 (RI-MP2) method with the TZVPP ([5s3p2d1f/3s2p1d]) basis set. All existing tautomers of adenine, cytosine, and thymine and the eight most stable keto/enol tautomers of guanine were considered. Cations bind mostly in a bidentate manner, and stabilization energies of these complexes are larger than those in the case when cations bind in a unidentate manner. The cation...Y (Y equal to N or O) distances for divalent metals are shorter than those for Na(+) and for Zn(2+) are mostly shorter than the Mg(2+)...Y distance. The intermolecular distances between the cation and the base for complexes containing adenine and cytosine are systematically shorter than those for complexes containing guanine and thymine. Only for cytosine the canonical keto/amino tautomer structure with ions represents the global minimum. For guanine, the metalated canonical form is again the most stable, but its stabilization energy is within less than 5% of the stabilization energies of the two other rare tautomers, which indicates that the canonical form and these two rare tautomers could coexist. The canonical structures of adenine and thymine in the presence of ions are considerably less stable (by more than 10%) than the complexes of the rare tautomers. It can be concluded that the interaction of Na(+), Mg(2+), and Zn(2+) cations with cytosine in the gas phase will not induce the change of the canonical form to the rare tautomeric form. In the case of isolated guanine, the equilibrium of the canonical form with rare tautomers can be found. For isolated adenine and thymine the presence of rare tautomers is highly probable.  相似文献

Boehmite (Al(OH)O) was employed for the removal of aqueous Mg(2+), Cu(2+), Cd(2+), Pb(2+), and Co(2+) at 298 K. Although boehmite was able to remove these divalent cations, the greater removal rate with boehmite of Pb(2+) (28.7%) than with Mg(2+), Cu(2+), Cd(2+), and Co(2+) (5.6, 25.3, 10.9, and 13.3%, respectively) was observed under acidic conditions. Under stronger alkaline conditions, in which the lead species was completely dissolved, a greater removal rate of Pb(2+) (more than 80%) was observed under the corresponding conditions employed for the acidic conditions. The removed lead species could not be dissolved from boehmite in an acidic solution while an evident dissolution of lead species was detected using an aqueous NaOH solution. The results shown in the present study reveal that boehmite can be employed as a reagent for the removal and regeneration of aqueous metal cations.  相似文献

The ML(4) complexes formed by reaction between the bidentate azulene-based ligand diethyl 2-hydroxyazulene-1,3-dicarboxylate (HAz) and several lanthanide cations (Pr(3+), Nd(3+), Gd(3+), Ho(3+), Er(3+), Tm(3+), Yb(3+), and Lu(3+)) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR vibrational spectroscopy and electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy. Spectrophotometric titrations have revealed that four Az(-) ligands react with one lanthanide cation to form the ML(4) complex in solution. Studies of the luminescence properties of these ML(4) complexes demonstrated that Az(-) is an efficient sensitizer for four different near-infrared emitting lanthanide cations (Nd(3+), Er(3+), Tm(3+), and Yb(3+)); the resulting complexes have high quantum yield values in CH(3)CN. The near-infrared emission arising from Tm(3+) is especially interesting for biologic imaging and bioanalytical applications since biological systems have minimal interaction with photons at this wavelength. Hydration numbers, representing the number of water molecules bound to the lanthanide cations, were obtained through luminescence lifetime measurements and indicated that no molecules of water/solvent are bound to the lanthanide cation in the ML(4) complex in solution. The four coordinated ligands protect well the central luminescent lanthanide cation against non-radiative deactivation from solvent molecules.  相似文献

In the present study ion exchange of Pb(2+), Cu(2+), Fe(3+), and Cr(3+) on natural Greek clinoptilolite was examined in terms of selectivity toward the above heavy metals in single- and multicomponent solutions in batch systems. Also examined are the influence of clinoptilolite on solution acidity and the effect of acidity on the ion exchange process. Clinoptilolite increases solution acidity due to the exchange of H(+) cations with the cations initially present in its structure. H(+) cations should be considered as competitive ones in ion exchange processes, and consequently ion exchange of metals is favored at high acidity values. Cu(2+) and Cr(3+) are the most sensitive cations with respect to acidity. Selectivity determination demonstrates that the selectivity at total concentration 0.01 N and acidity 2 in both single- and multicomponent solutions is following the order Pb(2+)>Fe(3+)>Cr(3+) > or =Cu(2+). This order is set since the first days of equilibration. However, Cu(2+) shows remarkable changes in selectivity and generally its uptake and selectivity are increasing with time. On the other hand selectivity in single metal solutions where acidity is not adjusted is following the order Pb(2+)>Cr(3+)>Fe(3+) congruent with Cu(2+).  相似文献

POLIR, a polarizable water potential optimized for vibrational and intermolecular spectroscopy in pure water but not optimized for solvation, is used to describe solutions of the divalent metal cations Ca(2+), Mg(2+), and Cu(2+). The spectral shifts in the O-H stretch region obtained from classical simulations are in agreement with experiment. The water-ion binding energies are dominated by classical electrostatics, even though the Cu(2+) case might be considered to involve an intermediate-strength chemical bond. Three-body energies of the ion with the first solvation shell are in agreement with ab initio calculations. Our results indicate the importance of polarization in the development of accurate, transferable, force fields and the power of classical methods when it is carefully included.  相似文献
