Nanofluids are obtained by suspending metallic or non-metallic nanoparticles in conventional base liquids and can be employed to increase heat transfer rate in various applications. In this study, the effects of adding three types of nanofluids on turbulent convective heat transfer at the entrance region of a constant wall heat flux tube were experimentally studied. The nanofluids were mixtures of aluminium oxide, copper oxide, and silicon carbide at various nanoparticle volume fractions ranging from 0.0002 to 0.002 in water. The convective heat transfer coefficient was measured at different Reynolds numbers of 10,000–50,000. At these concentrations and Reynolds numbers, a maximum of 11–18% of convection heat transfer coefficient was observed as compared to the base fluid, showing a 6–9% increase on average. In this study, it was observed that changes in the nanoparticle type had no considerable effect on heat transfer coefficient increase. According to the model proposed here, the dimensionless thickness of laminar sub-layer is specified as a functional equation of the volume fraction of nanoparticles for each material.

Power transformers play a key role in power and electrical industries and thus boosting their efficiency is necessary. In this study, the effect of oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes on transformer oil thermophysical properties was experimentally investigated. The maximum amount of carbon nanotubes was chosen up to 0.01 mass% to assure the maximum purity of transformer oil. Heat transfer characteristics of transformer oil and nanofluids in two cases of free and forced convection were studied. Breakdown voltage, flash point, pour point, density, electrical and thermal conductivities, viscosity and shear stress, as eight important quality parameters, were determined. According to the experimental results, the Breakdown voltage decreased through concentration increasing. Electrical conductivity is not changed considerable with increasing concentration and temperature. Thermal conductivity of nanofluids and transformer oil changed with increasing temperature and concentration. Furthermore, at all concentrations and temperatures, the viscosity of the nanofluids was lower than that of transformer oil.  相似文献

High-performance cooling is of vital importance for the cutting-edge technology of today, from nanoelectronic mechanical systems to nuclear reactors. Advances in nanotechnology have allowed the development of a new category of coolants, termed nanofluids that have the potential to enhance the thermal performance of conventional heat transfer fluids. At the present time, nanofluids are a controversial research theme, since there is yet no conclusive answer to explain the underlying physical mechanisms of heat transfer. The current study investigates experimentally the heat and mass transfer behaviour of dilute Al2O3–H2O nanofluids under turbulent natural convection—Rayleigh number of the order of 109—in a cubic Rayleigh–Bénard cell with optical access. Traditional heat transfer measurements were combined with a velocimetry method to obtain a deeper understanding of the impact of nanoparticles on the heat transfer performance of the base fluid. Particle image velocimetry was employed to quantify the resulting mean velocity field and flow structures in dilute nanofluids under natural convection, at three parallel planes inside the cubic cell. All the results were compared with that for the base fluid, i.e. deionised water. It was observed that the presence of a minute amount of Al2O3 nanoparticles in deionised water, φv =?0.00026 vol.%, considerably modifies the mass transfer behaviour of the fluid in the bulk region of turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection. Simultaneously, the general heat transport, as expressed by the Nusselt number, remained unaffected within the experimental uncertainty.

The hydrogen adsorption energies for nitrogen-containing carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) and for bare carbon nanotubes were calculated using the density functional theory methods at the B3LYP/6–31-G(d) level, including dispersion force corrections. The N-CNTs were finite saturated and non-saturated single-walled carbon nanotubes that contained one or more pyrimidine units, the relative positions of which defined the different configurations of the nanotube. The chemisorption of atomic hydrogen to a full exocyclic monolayer of zigzag, armchair, and chiral N-CNTs was studied as a function of the structural parameters. Zigzag N-CNTs of any configuration, with a larger number of nitrogen atoms, a small diameter and a small length, are more reactive compared to chiral and armchair N-CNTs. The presence of nitrogen in the carbon nanotubes enhances their reactivity to chemisorb atomic hydrogen, showing exothermic energy values. In contrast, the physisorption of molecular hydrogen was endothermic for most of the studied saturated N-CNTs, even when including corrections for van der Waals interactions. The endothermicity was greatest for zigzag nanotubes, then decreased for chiral nanotubes and decreased again for armchair nanotubes. In general, the endothermicity decreased for longer nanotubes, which have larger diameters, and a small number of nitrogen atoms. The results of this study suggest that, with saturated bare carbon nanotubes, saturated, and unsaturated N-CNTs could potentially have a higher capacity as hydrogen-storage media than the corresponding unsaturated carbon nanotubes.  相似文献

A range of nitrogen doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) was produced by a nebulised floating catalyst method at 850 °C using a mixture of toluene and 1-8% nitrogen containing reagents (a range of amines and amides). The carbon nanotube (CNT) products were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), CHN analysis as well as Raman spectroscopy. Differences due to the different N containing reagents were noted but in general all reagents gave aligned CNTs that at low concentration (1%) were longer and wider than those produced without nitrogen. Increased N content in the reactant mixture gave doped tubes that became shorter and showed more disorder. Treatment of the N-CNTs with nitric acid (microwave, 30 min) gave samples that were chemically modified by the acid (loss of alignment, narrower tubes and more facile oxidation). It appears in general that the amount of N in the nitrogen containing reagent is more important than the source and type of the N atoms used as revealed by trends in the morphology (diameter, length) of the N-CNTs produced.  相似文献

Nanofluids of Li2CO3–Na2CO3–K2CO3 improved by three nano-Al2O3 samples are firstly prepared by means of two-step aqueous method to enhance thermal properties for high-temperature heat transfer, when used as heat transfer fluids and thermal energy systems for concentrating solar power systems. Specific heat of ternary carbonates containing Al2O3 of 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, 1.0, 1.4 and 2.0 mass% is measured, and nanofluids with 1.0 mass% of 20-nm Al2O3, 1.0 mass% of 50-nm Al2O3 and 0.8 mass% of 80-nm Al2O3 are selected as superior candidates. The maximum enhancement of specific heat is 18.5% in solid and 33.0% in liquid, 17.9% in solid and 22.7% in liquid, 13.2% in solid and 17.5% in liquid for nanofluids containing 20-, 50- and 80-nm Al2O3. Thermal conductivity is, respectively, improved by 23.3, 28.5 and 30.9% under the addition of Al2O3. New chemical bonds and crystals are scarcely formed in composites through FT-IR and XRD determination. SEM images certify that nano-Al2O3 are homogeneously mixed into nanofluids and this structure may be a critical incentive for enhancing thermal properties. There are no significant changes with respect to the heat flow, melting/freezing point and latent heat after the 30 circles of determination. Briefly, it can be speculated that these nanofluids will exhibit tremendous potential in the coming applications of heat transfer and thermal storage for concentrating solar power systems.

Heat transfer enhancement and performance of compact heat exchangers have been extensively studied in the past century for the purpose of promoting energy efficiency. Microfin tubes in single/two/multiple-phase flow heat exchangers into which twisted tape swirl generators are installed can promote heat transfer with a moderate pressure loss penalty. This article reports on the enhanced heat transfer of silver–water nanofluids in a microfin tube into which loose-fit twisted tapes are installed in a counter-flow arrangement. The experiments were carried out using nanofluids with various silver concentrations (0.007–0.03 vol%), loose-fit twisted tapes with clearance ratios (c/D) of 0.0 (tight-fit), 0.05, 0.075 and 0.1, for a twist ratio, y/W, of 2.0. The results indicate that the heat transfer rate (Nu) and pressure drop (f) increase with a decrease in clearance ratio (c/D) and increase in silver (Ag) nanoparticle concentration. Additionally, the thermal performance factor tends to increase with the decrease in Reynolds numbers.

Copper/carbon dot nanohybrids (Cu/CD NHs) were prepared via a facile precipitation method through a disproportionation reaction. The surface characterization was performed by various techniques such as XRD, FTIR and TEM. Then, water-based nanofluids composed of Cu/CD NHs at 0.1 and 0.5 mass% were prepared, and their thermo-physical properties including thermal conductivity, viscosity, density and specific heat were evaluated at various temperatures. The water-based Cu/CD nanofluid demonstrated to be a potential heat transfer fluid with a high stability. It was found that the thermal conductivity can be enhanced by increasing the nanoparticle concentration and temperature. Almost 1.25-fold increase in thermal conductivity has been achieved by raising the temperature up to 50 °C and at the concentration of 0.5 mass%. The heat capacity was found to increase with increasing concentration. Moreover, by increasing temperature the density and viscosity of the as-prepared nanofluid decreased, whereas the heat capacity showed an increasing trend.  相似文献

A numerical simulation model for laminar flow of nanofluids in a pipe with constant heat flux at the wall has been built to study the effect of Reynolds number on heat transfer and pressure loss. The investigation was performed for metallic oxide and multi-oxide nanoparticles suspended in water. The thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity were measured for a range of temperature (10–60 °C) and volume fraction of multi-oxide nanofluid. Comparison of the thermal conductivity for monocular oxide and multi-oxide nanofluids reveals a new way to control the enhancement in nanofluid conductivity. The numerical results obtained were compared with existing well-established correlations. The predictions of the Nusselt number for nanofluids are in agreement with the Shah correlation, and the deviation in the results is less than 1 %. It is found that the pressure loss increases with the Reynolds number, nanoparticle density, and volume fraction for multi-oxide nanoparticles. However, the flow demonstrates enhancement in heat transfer which improves with increasing Reynolds number of the flow.  相似文献

For the first time, the heat transfer performance of a CuO–ZnO (80:20)/water hybrid has been studied experimentally and numerically in a shell and tube heat exchanger under turbulent flow conditions nanofluid (STHE). All experiments are carried out with 0.01 vol% CuO–ZnO (80:20)/water hybrid nanofluid at Reynolds numbers (NRe) ranging from 1900 to 17,500. The stabilized hybrid nanofluids (30 °C-Tube side) are then used as a coolant to reduce the hot fluid (60 °C-shell side) temperature using a STHE, with the results for the convective heat transfer coefficient, Nusselt number, friction factor, and pressure drop reported. The primary goal of this paper is to investigate the impact of hybrid nanoparticle mixing ratio optimization on STHE heat transfer efficiency under various operating conditions. According to the findings, the CuO–ZnO (80:20)/water hybrid nanofluid improved the heat transfer performance of the STHE at all Reynolds numbers. When using nanofluid over water, the Nusselt number and pressure drop were improved by approximately 33% and 13%, respectively. The hybrid nanofluid's maximum thermal performance factor and thermal efficiency enhancement were 1.45 and 7%, respectively, at NRe = 17,500. According to the study, the thermal conductivity of nanofluid varies by only 5% after ten trials. Furthermore, the ANSYS Fluent program was used to predict the behavior of the hybrid nanofluid in STHE, and the simulation results fit the experimental values very well.  相似文献

Halloysite nanotube (HNT) which is cheap, natural, and easily accessible 1D clay, can be used in many applications, particularly heat transfer enhancement. The aim of this research is to study experimentally the pool boiling heat transfer (PBHT) performance of novel halloysite nanofluids at atmospheric pressure condition from typical horizontal heater. The nanofluids are prepared from halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) nanomaterials-based deionized water (DI water) with the presence of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution to control pH = 12 to obtain stable nanofluid. The nanofluids were prepared with dilute volume concentrations of 0.01–0.5 vol%. The performance of PBHT is studied via pool boiling curve and pool boiling heat transfer coefficient (PBHTC) from the typical heater which is the copper horizontal tube with a thickness of 1 mm and a diameter of 22 mm. The temperatures of the heated tube surface are measured to obtain the PBHTC. The results show an improvement of PBHTC for halloysite nanofluids compared to the base fluid. At 0.05 vol% concentration, HNT nanofluid has the best enhancement of 5.8% at moderate heat flux (HF). This indicates that HNT is a potential material in heat transfer applications.  相似文献

In this study, the rheological behavior and viscosity of a stable nanofluid, which is prepared with the suspension of MCM-41 nanoparticles in SAE40 engine oil as base fluid, would be presented. Two-step method has been used to stabilize the nanoparticles in engine oil. To obtain structural and morphological properties of the synthesized nanoparticles, small-angle X-ray scattering, N2 adsorption/desorption analysis and scanning electron microscopy have been done. Then, viscosity of nanofluids has been measured in temperature range of 25–55 °C, shear rates up to 13,000 s?1 and different concentrations (0 mass%, 0.5 mass%, 1 mass%, 3 mass% and 5 mass% of MCM-41 nanoparticles). For all the samples, the shear stress versus shear rate diagrams showed that SAE40 oil has Newtonian behavior, in which adding mesoporous silica nanoparticles causes non-Newtonian or pseudoplastic behavior. The results declared that viscosity decreases with increasing temperature and increases with an enhancement in concentration. Furthermore, based on experimental results, an accurate correlation has been proposed to predict the viscosity of SAE40/MCM-41 nanolubricants.

Nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs)/gold composites were synthesized through a simple self-assembly method. The morphology, composition, and optical properties of the resulted composites were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectra, ultraviolet–visible absorption spectrum, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic. This nanocomposite combines the advantages of N-CNTs and gold nanoparticales showing many excellent properties such as good dispersibility in water and satisfactory biocompatibility. Cyclic voltammogram experiment shows that N-CNTs/gold composite has high conductivity. Based on these aspects, N-CNTs/gold-modified electrode was applied to the voltammetric determination of thioridazine hydrochloride (TH) successfully. The linear calibration range for the TH sensor was 12?~?850?μM with a detection limit of 1.3?μM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3, long-term stability, and good reproducibility.  相似文献

A single bubble absorption column was used to examine the effect of hydrodynamic on carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) absorption in pure water and water-based nanofluids dispersed with neat, and OH and NH2 functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was used as a surfactant and stabilizer. The maximum absorption of CO2 and H2S were found to be 0.0038 mmol/m2·s and 0.056 mmol/m2·s using NH2-MWCNTs /nanofluid with 0.5 wt% content, respectively. The diffusion coefficients of gases into the nanofluids were computed by using an equation attained based on Dankwert’s theory. A last, an empirical correlation was proposed to determine the Sherwood number for the absorption of the aforementioned gases into the nanofluids.  相似文献

Present experimental investigation incorporates characterization of Al nanopowder, synthesis of Al/water nanofluids, and effect of these nanofluids on thermal performance of compact heat exchanger. Al nanoparticles are characterized using TEM and XRD. Al/water nanofluid is prepared by dispersing metal basis aluminium nanoparticles of average 100 nm size into double distilled water at two different particle volume concentrations of 0.1 and 0.2%. The nanofluids are prepared by two-step method and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide surfactant is used to stabilize the nanofluid. Thermo-physical properties of nanofluids at two different concentrations and their variation with fluid temperature are measured experimentally. It is examined that thermal conductivity, viscosity, and density of the nanofluid increased with the increase of volume concentrations. Furthermore, by increasing the fluid temperature, thermal conductivity is intensified, while the viscosity and density are decreased. Heat transfer parameters are strong functions of these thermo-physical properties. Therefore, comprehensive findings on heat transfer coefficient, Nusselt number, colburn factor, friction factor, and effectiveness are determined experimentally for prepared nanofluids passing under laminar conditions through single-pass cross-flow compact heat exchanger attached with multi-louvered fins.

In this research, three different volume concentrations (??=?0.05, 0.1 and 0.2%) of Al2O3/water, CuO/water and Al2O3–CuO/water (50:50) nanofluids are prepared by adopting a two-step nanofluid preparation method. Al2O3 and CuO nanoparticles with the average diameter of 50 nm and 27 nm were dispersed in distilled water. The thermal conductivity and viscosity of prepared nanofluids are measured for different temperatures by using KD2 Pro thermal property analyzed and Brookfield viscometer, respectively. The effects of nanofluids on the thermal, electrical and overall efficiency of photovoltaic thermal (PVT) solar collector are also studied. The experimental results revealed that the thermal conductivity and viscosity increase with the increase in percentage volume concentration and viscosity decreases with the increase in temperature. Furthermore, the obtained maximum thermal and electrical efficiencies of a PVT solar collector for 0.2% volume concentration of hybrid nanofluids are 82% and 15%, respectively, at peak solar radiation. The highest overall efficiency of a PVT collector with .2% volume concentration of hybrid nanofluid was 97% at peak solar radiation. Results recommend that nanofluids can be used as a heat transfer in PVT solar collector.

This study aimed to investigate the increase in heat transfer in the indirect heater at a city gate station (CGS) with the addition of copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles to water–ethylene glycol base fluids. Indirect heaters are typically used at CGSs to raise the heat transfer coefficient of output gas flow from ? 5 to 15 °C. Moreover, manufacturing laboratory equipment in the presence of water–ethylene glycol base fluid and the nanoparticle in volume fractions of 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 at a temperature of 40–70 °C was discussed using dimensional simulation and analysis. The physical properties of the base fluid and nanofluid were measured using precise devices. Heat transfer tests for the base and nanofluid, as well as replacing of the air by gas, were conducted in a simulated and developed device. According to the obtained results with respect to the changes in convection and conduction heat transfer, enhancement of temperature difference at a rate of 36% was observed in the indirect heater with nanoparticle volume concentration of 0.2% at a temperature of 70 °C. Moreover, the Nusselt number showed a relatively good agreement with theoretical discussions.
