Self‐reported sun exposure is commonly used in research, but how well this represents actual sun exposure is poorly understood. From February to July 2011, a volunteer sample (n = 47) of older adults (≥45 years) in Canberra, Australia, answered brief questions on time outdoors (weekdays and weekends) and natural skin color. They subsequently maintained a sun diary and wore an ultraviolet radiation (UVR) digital dosimeter for 7 days. Melanin density was estimated using reflectance spectrophotometry; lifetime sun damage was assessed using silicone casts of the back of the hand; and serum 25‐hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentration was assayed. Questionnaire‐reported time outdoors correlated significantly with diary‐recorded time outdoors (Spearman correlation rs = 0.66; 95% CI 0.46, 0.80; < 0.001) and UVR dosimeter dose (r= 0.46; 95% CI 0.18, 0.68; = 0.003), but not 25(OH)D concentration (rs = 0.24; 95% CI ?0.05, 0.50; = 0.10). Questionnaire‐reported untanned skin color correlated significantly with measured melanin density at the inner upper arm (rs = 0.49; 95% CI 0.24, 0.68; < 0.001). In a multiple linear regression model, statistically significant predictors of 25(OH)D concentration were self‐reported frequency of physical activity, skin color and recent osteoporosis treatment (R2 = 0.54). In this study, brief questionnaire items provided valid rankings of sun exposure and skin color, and enabled the development of a predictive model for 25(OH)D concentration.  相似文献

The influence of the summer UVR exposure on serum-25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) in late summer and winter was investigated in an open study on 25 healthy, adult volunteers. The UVR exposure dose in standard erythema dose (SED) was monitored continuously during a summer season with personal, electronic wristwatch UVR dosimeters and sun exposure diaries. Constitutive and facultative skin pigmentation was measured in September. 25(OH)D was measured in September and February and was in mean 82 nmol/L ± 25 (mean ± SD) in September and 56 nmol/L ± 19 (mean ± SD) in February. The received cumulative UVR dose measured during a mean of 121 days was 156 SED ± 159 (mean ± SD). The following UVR exposure parameters correlated with 25(OH)D in September and February, respectively: (1) The cumulative UVR dose ( r  = 0.53; P  < 0.01) and ( r  = 0.43; P  = 0.03); (2) Mean daily hours with UVR measurements monitored by the dosimeter ( r  = 0.64, P  = 0.001) and ( r  = 0.53; P  = 0.007); (3) Days "with sun-exposed upper body" ( r  = 0.58, P  = 0.003) and ( r  = 0.50; P  = 0.01); (4) Facultative pigmentation ( r  = 0.47; P  < 0.02) and ( r  = 0.7; P  < 0.001); (5) Constitutive pigmentation ( r  = 0.06, n.s.) and ( r  = 0.43, P  = 0.03). Neither days "sunbathing" nor days with "sunscreen applied" correlated with 25(OH)D. The fall in 25(OH)D during winter was dependent on the entry value.  相似文献

Personal ultraviolet radiation (UVR) dosimetry is important because sunlight is the most important risk factor for skin cancer and a risk factor for some eye diseases and immunosuppression and related disorders. Integrating devices, such as polysulphone film dosimeters, are generally used. To measure the exact dose at specific times, we have developed a personal electronic UVR dosimeter that makes time-stamped measurements. It has a sensor with an erythema action spectrum response and a linear sensitivity (dose-response) with no offset. The sensor has cosine response, and the dosimeter can cope with environmental conditions such as rain, temperature and dirt. It can be programmed to measure with different time intervals and save the average of a specified number of measurements in the memory that can store 32 000 time-stamped measurements. It is small (36 x 28 x 13 mm), weighs 14 g and can work for 4 months without maintenance. It is worn on the wrist, is equipped with a watch showing the time and may thus be used in large-scale studies. The sensitivity can change by 10% due to temperature changes from -5 to 40 degrees C. The UVR dosimeter sensitivity is 0.09 standard erythema doses (SED)/h and the difference in total received dose during 7 days between a Solar Light 501 UV-Biometer (186 SED) and our UVR dosimeter was 3% and the median difference in daily total dose was 2.2%. The dosimeter provides unique possibilities. Examples of personal UVR measurements, data calculations and how they can be interpreted are given.  相似文献

Vitamin D deficiency is more common in Northeast‐Asian immigrants to western countries than in the local population; prevalence equalizes as immigrants adopt the host country's culture. In a community‐based study of 100 Northeast‐Asian immigrants in Canberra, Australia, we examined predictors of vitamin D status, its association with indicators of acculturation (English language use; time since migration) and mediators of that association. Participants completed a sun and physical activity diary and wore an electronic ultraviolet radiation (UVR) dosimeter for 7 days. Skin colour was measured by reflectance spectrophotometry. Serum concentrations of 25‐hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and cardio‐metabolic biomarkers were measured on fasting blood. In a multiple linear regression model, predictors for 25(OH)D concentration were season of blood collection, vitamin D supplementation, UVR exposure, body mass index, physical activity and having private health insurance (R2 = 0.57). Greater acculturation was associated with lower risk of vitamin D deficiency (de‐seasonalized 25(OH)D level <50 nmol L?1) (Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR): 0.22 [95%CI 0.04–0.96]); this association was statistically mediated by physical activity and time outdoors. Vitamin D deficiency was associated with higher total cholesterol levels (>5.0 mmol L?1) (AOR: 7.48 [95%CI 1.51–37.0]). Targeted public health approaches are required to manage the high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in migrants retaining a traditional lifestyle.  相似文献

Some physico-technical parameters of the self-calibrated alanine/EPR dosimeters are described. Principally, this new type of solid state/EPR dosimeter contains radiation sensitive diamagnetic material (in the present case, alanine), some quantity of EPR active, but radiation insensitive, substance (for example, Mn2+/MgO) playing roles of an internal standard and a binding material. Thus with this dosimeter the EPR spectra of alanine and the internal standard Mn2+ are recorded simultaneously and the dose response is represented as a ratio of EPR signal intensities of alanine versus Mn2+ as a function of absorbed dose. As a result, the data of the present study have shown that there is practically no interference of the dosimeter EPR response (expressed as the ratio I alanine/I Mn) from the way of preparation (homogeneity), behavior after irradiation (fading of EPR signals with time, influence of different meteorological conditions) as well as specific spectrometer setting conditions. These dosimeters show satisfactory reproducibility of preparation and reading as well as stability on keeping. Thus, fulfilling the described physico-technical data of this type of dosimeters, the reproducibility of the readings is significantly improved particularly when intercomparison among different laboratories is performed. This conclusion is confirmed by independent studies of the described self-calibrated alanine/EPR dosimeters in several laboratories in Europe. Results of which are also reported.  相似文献

Excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is considered the most important environmental risk factor in the development of melanoma and skin cancer. Outdoor workers are among those with the highest risk from exposure to solar UVR, as their daily activities constantly expose them to this radiation source. A study was carried out in Valencia, Spain, in summer 2012 and involved a group of 11 workers for a period of six 2‐day recordings. Sensitive spore‐film filter‐type personal dosimeters (VioSpor) were used to measure erythemal UVR received by environmental agents in the course of their daily work. Median 2‐day UV exposure was 6.2 standard erythema dose (SED), with 1 SED defined as effective 100 J m?2 when weighted with the Commission Internationale de L′Eclairage's (CIE) erythemal response function. These workers were found to receive a median of 8.3% total daily ambient ultraviolet erythemal radiation. Comparison with the occupational UV exposure limit showed that the subjects had received an erythemal UV dose in excess of occupational guidelines, indicating that protective measures against this risk are highly advisable.  相似文献

Summary A bilirubin-chloroform solution was tested as a gamma-radiation dosimeter (SALPILL dosimeter) in the 0-100 Gy range, and at dose rates between 0.01 to 3.18 Gy . min-1, which displayed certain advantages over the conventional Fricke, TLD and diode dosimeters when examined under identical experimental conditions. The principle of operation involved gamma-irradiation of micro-molar quantities of the unconjugated specimen with a 137Cs source (662 keV gamma-rays), and measurement of the (degraded) bilirubin absorption at 453 nm. The relationship of bilirubin depletion and radiation dose was linear, which remained invariant with oxic and anoxic exposure, denoting excellent reproducibility under diverse experimental conditions. Further validation of performance was achieved by repeated in-air trials, which produced a reproducibility within ±2% (n = 5). Stringent comparative tests conducted against currently accepted gamma-radiation dosimeters favoured the SALPILL dosimeter in all the relevant areas. The merits of using chloroform as a solvent in place of water was considered. The SALPILL dosimeter has the following distinctive features: prolonged “shelf-life” (before and after irradiation), insensitive into oxygen, operational at relatively low dose rates, linear functionality at low doses (0-5 Gy), solvent stability, solute integrity, reliability, convenient and cost-effective. The drawbacks of SALPILL are minimal, which makes it a facile dosimeter for certain applications.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to investigate the radiation-modifying effects of incorporating commercially available bismuth-, tin- and zinc-based compounds in the composition of the PRESAGE® dosimeter, and the feasibility of employing such compounds for radiation dose enhancement. Furthermore, we demonstrate that metal compounds can be included in the formulation to yield water-equivalent PRESAGE® dosimeters with enhanced dose response. Various concentrations of the metal compounds were added to a newly developed PRESAGE® formulation and the resulting dosimeters were irradiated with 100 kV and 6 MV photon beams. A comparison between sensitivity and radiological properties of the PRESAGE® dosimeters with and without the addition of metal compounds was carried out. Optical density changes of the dosimeters before and after irradiation were measured using a spectrophotometer. In general, when metal compounds were incorporated in the composition of the PRESAGE® dosimeter, the sensitivity of the dosimeters to radiation dose increased depending on the type and concentration of the metal compound, with the bismuth compound showing the highest dose enhancement factor. In addition, these metal compounds were also shown to improve the retention of the post-response absorption value of the PRESAGE® dosimeter over a period of 2 weeks. Thus, incorporating 1–3 mM (ca. 0.2 wt%) of any of the three investigated metal compounds in the composition of the PRESAGE® dosimeter is found to be an efficient way to enhance the sensitivity of the dosimeter to radiation dose and stabilize its post-response for longer times. Furthermore, the addition of small amounts of the metal compounds also accelerates the polymerization of the PRESAGE® dosimeter precursors, significantly reducing the fabrication time. Finally, a novel water-equivalent PRESAGE® dosimeter formula optimized with metal compounds is proposed for clinical use in both kilovoltage and megavoltage radiotherapy dosimetry.  相似文献

Sonochemistry and its dosimetry   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The effects of ultrasound originate primarily in acoustic cavitation. The cavitation bubbles collapse violently enough to lead to interesting chemical effects, known as sonochemistry. There is a great need to relate the efficiency of sonochemical reaction to the energy of ultrasonic irradiation used to produce them. In this paper, three OH radical dosimeters, Fricke dosimeter, terephthalate dosimeter, and iodide dosimeter, are compared from the analytical point of view. The dosimeters based on photometry, i.e., Fricke and iodide, produced reliable and reproducible results, but the sensitivity is not enough for special applications, such as chemical monitoring of single bubble cavitation. The dosimeter based on fluorometry, terephthalate dosimeter, offered high sensitivity, 1.2×1011 molecules ml−1. The effects of some experimental parameters in sonochemistry, i.e., solution temperature and the dissolved gas species, were evaluated with the dosimeters.  相似文献

Solar ultraviolet‐B radiation (UVB) is essential for epidermal vitamin D production. We aimed to quantitate the relationship between personal solar UV exposure and serum 25hydroxy vitamin D (25[OH]D) concentration. Blood was collected for 25(OH)D analysis in 207 South Australian adults aged 27–61 years. At the time of blood collection, each participant completed a questionnaire, which included a calendar for recall of sun exposure in the preceding 16 weeks. We examined the association between solar UV exposure and serum 25(OH)D graphically from smoothed scatter plots, and modeled it using multiple linear regression, with age, sex and body mass index as covariates. Estimated erythemal solar UV exposure in the 6 weeks before blood collection best predicted serum 25(OH)D concentrations. Serum 25(OH)D rose with increasing personal solar UV exposure to a maximum of about 89 nmol L?1 at an estimated mean weekly solar erythemal UV exposure of about 1230 mJ cm?2. The maximum was the same after accounting for clothing coverage and was reached at an estimated whole body equivalent exposure to ambient UV of ca 700 mJ cm?2. These results suggest that an average maximum serum 25(OH)D of ca 89 nmol L?1 is achieved from sun exposure in a healthy Australian adult population.  相似文献

UV exposure is considered to be one of the most important risk factors in skin cancers, mainly in outdoor occupational or recreational activities. Outdoor athletes such as cyclists receive regular and significant solar UV erythemal radiation (UVER). The aim of this work was to quantify UVER exposure of amateur cyclists over the course of several days in their training schedules. To quantify UVER exposure of this group, dosimeters (Viospor) were attached at the top of the helmet in the course of their training. The study took place in Valencia, Spain, in June to July 2008 and February to March 2009, and involved a group of five cyclists over a period of 4 days for each period. The mean 2-day personal UV exposure was 32.24 ± 4.14 SED (standard erythema dose) in summer and 11.30 ± 5.36 SED in the winter period. One SED is defined as an effective radiant exposure of 100 J m−2 when weighted with the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) erythemal response function. The mean exposure ratio (ER) of cyclists was 0.37 ± 0.04 in summer and 0.40 ± 0.11 in winter. The cyclists received the highest UVER exposure in the summer period, but in both training periods UVER exposure was in excess of occupational and recreational guidelines, indicating that protective measures are very necessary.  相似文献

Characteristics of the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) films containing 0.11 wt% of malachite green oxalate or 6GX-setoglausine and about 100 μm in thickness were studied for use as routine dosimeters in radiation processing. These films show basically color bleaching under irradiation with 60Co γ-rays in a dose range of 5–50 kGy. The sensitivity of the dosimeters and the linearity of dose-response curves are improved by adding 2.5% of chloral hydrate [CCl3CH(OH)2] and 0.15% hydroquinone [HOC6H4OH]. These additions extend the minimum dose limit to 1 kGy covering dosimetry requirements of the quality assurance in radiation processing of food and healthcare products. The dose responses of both dyed PVC films at irradiation temperatures from 20°C to 35°C are constant relative to those at 25°C, and the temperature coefficients for irradiation temperatures from 35°C to 55°C were estimated to be (0.43±0.01)%/°C. The dosimeter characteristics are stable within 1% at 25°C before and 60 days after the end of irradiation.  相似文献

Radiotherapy widely uses the polymer gel dosimeter. The advantage of polymer gel dosimetry is the mapped 3D absorbed dose distribution that other dosimeters cannot achieve. The Acrylamide (AAm) is a frequently used monomer; however, the extreme toxicity of Acrylamide (ORL-RAT LD50: 124 mg/kg) raises a concern. Therefore, this study developed a new type of Propylene acid based gel dosimeter, named DEMBIG gel. The following outlines the aim of this study: (1) using two-point formulation to find the optimal scan parameter of MRI according to the best sensitivity and linearity (correlation coefficient) of DEMBIG gel, (2) using the optimal scan parameter of MRI to observe the properties of DEMBIG gel, and (3) verifying the three-dimensional (3D) dose distributions of radiotherapy. This study obtained three major results: 1. The scan protocol of MRI was established. 2. The preliminary results of DEMBIG gel were: (1) The range of absorbed dose of DEMBIG gel: 0–20 Gy. (2) The sensitivity and correlation coefficient of DEMBIG gel at verification as slope: 0.181 sGy?1, R 2:0.997. (3) There is no energy dependency of the DEMBIG gel. 3. The dose difference was 3% in the three-dimensional (3D) isocenter dose in clinical radiotherapy. These data show that DEMBIG gel is a potential candidate for the 3D dosimeter.  相似文献

To estimate the risk of enhanced UV-B radiation due to stratospheric ozone depletion, phage T7 and uracil thin-layer biological dosimeters have been developed, which weight the UV irradiance according to induced DNA damage. To study the molecular basis of the biological effects observed after UV irradiation, the spectral sensitivity curves of the two dosimeters and induction of the two major DNA photoproducts, cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) and 6-4 photoproducts ((6-4)PDs), in phage T7 have been determined for polychromatic UV sources. CPDs and (6-4)PDs are determined by lesion-specific monoclonal antibodies in an immunodotblot assay. Phage T7 and uracil biological dosimeters together with a Robertson-Berger (RB) meter have been used for monitoring environmental radiation from the polar region to the equator. The biologically effective dose (BED) established with the three different dosimeters increases according to the changes in the solar angle and ozone column, but the degree of the change differs significantly. The results can be explained based on the different spectral sensitivities of the dosimeters. A possible method for determining the trend of the increase in the biological risk due to ozone depletion is suggested.  相似文献

Alanine/EPR dosimeters are well established as secondary, reference dosimeters for high-energy radiation. However, there are various sources of uncertainty in the evaluation of absorbed dose. This arises primarily from the necessity to calibrate each EPR spectrometer and each batch of dosimeters before their use. In order to overcome this disadvantage, a new generation alanine/EPR dosimeter has been developed, and its possibilities as a radiation detector are reported. Principally, it is a mixture of alanine, some quantity of EPR active substance, and a binding material. The EPR active substance, acting as an internal EPR standard, is chosen to have EPR parameters which are independent of the irradiation dose. The simultaneous recording of the spectra of both the sample and the standard under the same experimental conditions and the estimation of the ratioI alanine/I Mn as a function of the absorbed dose strongly reduces the uncertainties. The response of these dosimeters for60Co γ-radiation exhibits excellent linearity and reproducibility in the range of absorbed dose, 102−5·104 Gy.  相似文献

UVexposure is considered to be one of the most important risk factors in skin cancers, mainly in outdoor occupational activities. Outdoor workers receive regular and significant solar UV erythemal radiation (UVER). To quantify the UVER exposure of certain groups of workers, dosimeters are used to measure the biologically effective UV radiation received in the course of their daily work. Two groups of outdoor workers, composed of gardeners and lifeguards, were measured for UVER exposure using sensitive spore-film filter-type personal dosimeters (Viospor). The study took place in Valencia, Spain, in June and July 2008, and involved one group of four gardeners and another of five beach lifeguards for a period of 4 and 6 days, respectively. The gardeners' mean UV exposure was 4.13 ± 0.60 SED day−1, where 1 SED is defined as effective 100 J m−2 when weighted with the CIE erythemal response function, whereas the lifeguards received 11.43 ± 2.15 SED day−1. The mean exposure ratio (ER) relative to ambient of gardeners was 0.09 ± 0.01 and for lifeguards was 0.27 ± 0.05. ER is defined as the ratio between the personal dose on a selected anatomical site and the corresponding ambient dose on a horizontal plane during the same exposure period. The lifeguards received the highest UVER exposure, although both groups had measured UVER exposure in excess of occupational guidelines, indicating that protective measures are necessary.  相似文献

Polymeric gel dosimeters are used to verify three-dimensional (3D) dose distributions of various types of radiotherapy treatments, particularly radiosurgery. The present paper investigates the low toxicity and high dose response of a new acrylate gel. The optimal recipe with the best linearity (R 2 = 0.998) is 7% gelatin, 5% 2-(dimethylamino) ethyl acrylate monomer, and 4% NN′-methylene-bisacrylamide crosslinker. The dose range is 0–30 Gy, and the temporal stability time is 12 h after irradiation. No significant energy dependency has been observed. The results show that the 2-(dimethylamino) ethyl acrylate NN′-methylene-bisacrylamide gelatin gel is a potential 3D dosimeter.  相似文献

Marathon runners spend considerable time in outdoor training for and participating in marathons. Outdoor runners may experience high solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure. South Africa, where running is popular, experiences high ambient solar UVR levels that may be associated with adverse health effects. This feasibility study explores the use of personal dosimeters to determine solar UVR exposure patterns and possible related acute health risks of four marathon runners during marathons and training sessions in Cape Town and Pretoria. Runners running marathons that started early in the day, and that did not exceed 4 hours, yielded low total solar UVR exposure doses (mean 0.093 SED per exposure period run, median 0.088 SED, range 0.062–0.136 SED; average of 16.54% of ambient solar UVR). Training sessions run during early morning and late afternoon presented similar results. Several challenges hindered analysis including accounting for anatomical position of personal dosimeter and natural shade. To assess health risks, hazard quotients (HQs) were calculated using a hypothetical runner's schedule. Cumulative, annual solar UVR exposure‐calculated acute health risks were low (HQ = 0.024) for training sessions and moderate (HQ = 4.922) for marathon runs. While these data and calculations are based on 18 person‐days, one can measure marathon runners' personal solar UVR exposure although several challenges must be overcome.  相似文献

Two types of liquid-core optical waveguide (OWG) dosimeters are commercially available for dosimetry in the irradiation of foods and other products. “Opti-chromic” type FWT-70-40M has a useful range of about 10-104 Gy and type FWT-70–83M about 102−104 Gy. 5 Within the limits of random uncertainty of the reading of the absorbed dose (±5%, 1σ), the response to γ-radiation is independent of dose rate over the range 10-1−104 Gy/h, when measured at the peak of the spectrum [absorption band maximum (600 nm wavelength)]. The response curve is linear with dose up to ≈103 Gy, but is non-linear at higher doses, where the readings are made away from the absorption peak (656nm). Both dosimeter types when measured at 600 nm are temperature dependent over the temperatures ranges of -40 to 60°C during irradiation. The dosimeters cannot be used when exposed to temperatures > 60°C because of bubble formation and loss of light propagation. At doses < 103 Gy (at600 nm), the dosimeters are stable (in terms of dose readings) for several months following irradiation, but at doses ≈ 104 kGy (at 656 nm), they show a gradual absorbance increase (error in dose interpretation), over post-irradiation storage periods longer than 1 month. A special, sensitive OWG dosimeter (50-cm coil), designed for doses down to 10-1 Gy, shows a linear response up to at least 15 Gy, a temperature dependence of response only at temperatures below ≈ 20°C, and no dose-rate dependence.  相似文献

A new label dosimeter which changes its color by large radiation doses has been developed. The green color of the unirradiated dosimeter gradually turns to brown then to red at high doses. The label dosimeter was prepared with a peal-off paper backing, allowing it to stick by self-adhesion to a product box. Three types of dosimeters having different sensitivities to radiation doses were prepared. Correlations were established between absorbed doses and color scale or the green/red axis of the irradiated dosimeters, using a micro color unit equipped with a data station. The data were analyzed to determine the reproducibility of the reflectance measured from the label dosimeters exposed to different doses of γ radiation. These dosimeters showed great stability on extended storage before and after irradiation.Detailed measurements of absorbed dose extremes (Dmin and Dmax) in product boxes, processed in the Egypt Mega Gamma I radiation processing facility, were obtained using these dosimeters. These dosimeters are currently available in large quantities and are inexpensive, which makes them suitable for routine high-dose applications in radiation processing of materials.  相似文献
