New homologous series of 4-isopropyl- and 4-isopropoxy- N -(4- n -alkoxysalicylidene)anilines were synthesized. The phase transitions of these homologues were determined by differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy. No enantiotropic liquid crystalline phases were observed for homologues having a terminal isopropyl group; as the terminal alkoxyl chain is lengthened, smectic C and nematic phases occur monotropically. The members with an isopropoxy substituent exhibit an enantiotropic nematic phase as the terminal alkoxyl chain is lengthened; the octyloxy member exhibits a monotropic smectic C phase as well as an enantiotropic nematic state.  相似文献

Development of new liquid crystalline materials exhibiting interesting properties and phases continues to be an enabling enterprise in the forward march of their successful display and non-display applications. The design and synthesis of a homologous series of liquid crystalline bent-core compounds derived from the oxadiazole bisaniline moiety and the phase behavior of three members of the series that exhibit nematic, smectic C, and dark conglomerate phases is reported. The liquid crystalline phases exhibited by these mesogens are characterized using polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and x-ray scattering techniques. All three homologs prepared exhibit the nematic phase. Interestingly, the homolog with short hexyl terminal chains exhibits only the nematic phase that is stable over a very broad, nearly 100 K wide, temperature range. The compound with terminal octyl chains shows the chiral dark conglomerate phase below the nematic phase despite the bent molecules being achiral. The homolog with dodecyl alkyl chains is found to possess the smectic-C and two additional lamellar phases besides the nematic phase. These compounds enrich the library of achiral bent-core materials capable of exhibiting chiral and nematic phases.  相似文献

A series of linear oligo ( p -phenylene)s containing three, five and seven phenylene groups, modified with short lateral and long terminal alkoxy chains, were synthesized via Palladium complex-catalysed cross-coupling reactions. The thermotropic liquid crystalline and UV absorption/emission properties of these compounds were studied. It was observed that tri ( p -phenylene)s develop a rich mesomorphism including tilted smectic type mesophases (SmC and SmF/SmI) and the nematic phase, whereas penta- and hepta-( p -phenylene)s substituted with short lateral chains develop only the nematic phase. From these observations it is clear that the short lateral chains hinder the layered molecular packing typical of smectic phases and promote the formation of the less ordered liquid-like nematic phase. Mesophases appeared at lower temperatures when longer end chains were used. The optical properties studied by UV-Vis and emission spectroscopy indicate that these systems are promising candidates for blue-emitting layers in electroluminescent devices.  相似文献

Hexakis(4-(4'-heptyloxy)biphenoxy)cyclotriphosphazene (HHCP) was synthesized from hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene and 4-heptyloxy-4'-hydroxybiphenyl. The mesogenicity of HHCP was studied by DSC, FTIR spectroscopy and polarizing microscopy. Enantiotropic smectic C and nematic phases were observed between 450 and 455 K and 455 and 456 K, respectively, on heating, and between 456 and 455 K (nematic) and 455 and 440 K (smectic C) on cooling from the isotropic liquid phase. The introduction of the heptyloxybiphenoxy groups as side chains into cyclotriphosphazene has generated the liquid crystalline phase. FTIR spectroscopy showed that the P=N and P-O-(C) stretching vibrations converted to lower frequencies from 1224 to 1210 cm-1 and from 920 to 910cm-1, respectively, at the crystalline (C)-Sc phase transition. This result suggests that the state of the cyclotriphosphazene ring dramatically changes near the C-Sc phase transition.  相似文献

Six series of laterally fluorinated liquid crystals containing 1,3,2-dioxaborinane and cyclohexyl units have been synthesized and characterized. Their mesomorphic properties were characterized by polarizing optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. All these compounds are thermotropic liquid crystalline materials. All three-ring compounds (series A, B and C) and most four-ring compounds (series D, E and F) exhibit only a nematic phase, while some four-ring compounds with long terminal alkyl chains show nematic, smectic A and even smectic B phases. In addition, four compounds containing a 1,3-dioxane unit were prepared, and their mesomorphic properties compared with their 1,3,2-dioxaborinane analogues. The dielectric anisotropies of selected target compounds were determined; some showed a negative anisotropy. The relationships between the properties and chemical structures of these new compounds are discussed.  相似文献

The mesomorphic properties of conventional rod-like liquid crystals (diphenyl1,3,4-thiadiazoles, diphenylpyrimidines, diphenyltriazines, diphenyltetrazines and p-terphenyl derivatives), of macrocyclic liquid crystals and of dimesogens can be influenced by addition of the electron acceptor 2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone (TNF). Thereby nematic and smectic C phases are suppressed and smectic A phases can be stabilized or induced. Long and branched terminal chains result in a strong stabilization of the SA phase, whereas no smectic phase is induced to accompany the nematic phases of mesogens with short terminal chains.  相似文献

Six series of liquid crystal materials containing a 2,5-disubstituted thiophene unit were synthesized. The liquid crystal compounds obtained were characterized by NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. The properties of liquid crystalline phases were investigated as a function of spacer units, number of aromatic core rings and different terminal moieties. Cyano, methoxy and iodo groups were used as terminal groups. It is found that: (i) compounds having one thiophene ring and one phenyl ring connected by an ester group, with a length/breadth value of 2.1, exhibit no mesophase, while other compounds containing two biphenyl rings, with a length/breadth ratio of 2.7, show mesophases; (ii) the polarity of terminal groups and the flexible spacer length significantly affect the thermal behaviour of these compounds; (iii) the nematic transition range of cyano-containing compounds decreases with increasing length of the flexible spacer, and long alkenyloxy chains tend to facilitate the formation of the smectic phase and suppress the nematic phase in all the mesogenic compounds synthesized.  相似文献

One series of two-ring and two series of three-ring liquid crystal compounds, all containing omega, alpha, alpha-trihydroperfluoroalkoxy terminal tails, were prepared and characterized by IR, NMR, MS and elemental analysis. Their phase transition behaviour was investigated by DSC and polarizing optical microscopy. Biphenylene derivatives with the omega, alpha, alpha-trihydroperfluoroalkoxy end group form a stable smectic A phase. In the three-ring system, biphenylene ester compounds exhibit a smectic phase without a nematic phase. The compounds exhibit smectic A and smectic C phases when the terminal groups are intermediate length alkyl and fluorinated alkyl chains. Mesogens with fluorinated tails have a broader smectic C phase than the non-fluorinated mesogens.  相似文献

A new class of non-symmetric dimeric compounds derived from 4-cyano-4′-hydroxybiphenyl in which two rigid parts are connected via flexible spacers have been designed and synthesised. These materials possess trialkoxy chains attached at one end of the molecule, while the other end consists of a biphenyl moiety terminated with the highly polar cyano group. The molecular structures of these dimers have been confirmed by elemental analysis and spectroscopic data and their phase behaviour has been characterised by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). Almost all of the synthesised materials exhibit liquid crystalline properties depending on the number of carbon atoms in the terminal chains, where all short chains derivatives form nematic phases and depending on the length of the internal spacer long terminal chains homologues display crystalline or unidentified smectic phase.  相似文献

A homologous series of U-shaped dimeric liquid crystals in which two mesogenic groups are connected via catechol has been prepared and the effects of terminal alkyl chains, alkyl spacers and core structures on the transition properties investigated by means of optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The phase sequence exhibits a pronounced odd-even effect as the length and parity of the spacers is varied, in which the even members favour the nematic and smectic C phases, whereas the odd members favour the nematic and smectic A phases. We discuss the transition behaviour of the U-shaped compounds in terms of molecular shape.  相似文献

Some molecules of unusual shape and apparently non-linear geometry, with mesogens tied directly to a central unit (for example, tetrahedral pentaerythritol), have been investigated for liquid crystalline behaviour. It was found that these three-, four- and six-armed 'star' molecules generated liquid crystalline mesophases, which were characterized by DSC, optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The temperature ranges of the fluid mesophases for the thermotropic compounds were above 158°C for the three-armed molecules and above 219°C for the four-and six-armed 'stars'. All the liquid crystalline compounds exhibited a smectic phase, which appears to be smectic A, with the molecules in their fully extended conformations within the layers. Some of the compounds also had a smectic phase of higher order or a nematic phase.  相似文献

Abstract

Seven new derivatives of 4-octyloxy-N-(4-substituted benzylidene) aniline have been synthesized. 4-Trifluoromethyl and 4-trifluoromethoxy derivatives exhibit stable smectic B and A phases, respectively, while both the 4-methyl and 4-methoxy derivatives have monotropic nematic phases. Fundamental liquid crystalline properties such as entropies of the phase transitions, microscopic textures, smectic layer spacings, orientational order parameters, and molecular dipole moments were determined. It has been revealed that moderately polar nature of these mesogens act to stabilizing monolayer smectic states. The smectic A phase of 4-trifluoromethoxy derivative exhibit very high orientational order. None of the disubstituted compounds, 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl), 3,5-dimethyl, and 3,5-dimethoxy derivatives were mesogenic. The effect of terminal trifluoromethylation on the liquid crystalline properties is discussed.  相似文献

Eight novel liquid crystalline materials were prepared containing highly branched terminal chains, either 2,4,4-trimethylpentyl or 3,5,5-trimethylhexyl. All materials exhibit nematic mesophases, with additional smectic (Sm) C, hexatic B and SmI phases for certain homologues. Analysis by small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering reveals continual build-up of the correlation length within the nematic phases, where we also observe splitting of the small angle peak into four lobes, indicating pretransitional Sm fluctuations. Connoscopy confirms the nematic phase to be uniaxial and optically positive. We observe that in the solid state, the molecules exist as staggered antiparallel pairs as a consequence of the sterically demanding bulky terminal group, and this would also appear to manifest in the hexatic B phase, where the layer spacing was found to be greater than the molecular length. If true, this is an example of pair formation driven by sterics rather than dipole–dipole interactions and suggests that reentrant systems driven purely by steric frustration may be found.  相似文献

A new series of copolymers with optically-active liquid crystalline side chain units has been synthesized from the comonomers (S)-2-[2-(4′-cyano-4-biphenylyloxy-1-methylethoxy]ethyl methacrylate ( 1 ) and di[6-(4-methoxy-4′-oxybiphenyl)hexyl]-2-methylene butane-1,4-dioate ( 4 ). Chiral nematic phases were exhibited by two members of the series, rich in monomer 1 , while a smectic phase was exhibited in copolymers rich in 4 . While it was thought possible that ordered chiral liquid crystalline phases may be induced by copolymerizing chiral mesogenic monomers with mesogenic derivatives of itaconic acid where the high side chain density encourages greater ordering in the system, no evidence of smectic C* phases could be found in the present systems. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The synthesis and liquid crystalline properties of new series of 1,2,4- and 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives (2a-f and 5a-f respectively) are reported. These compounds contain only one terminal flexible alkoxy chain, the other terminal substituent is a protecting benzyl group. All compounds of series 2 exhibit an enantiotropic nematic phase. The homologue with the longest chain (2f) displays an enantiotropic dimorphism smectic A- nematic. None of the compounds of series 5 shows mesomorphism and only crystal-isotropic transitions were observed. The liquid crystalline properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray measurements. Luminescence properties, in chloroform solution, of 2f and the series 5 compounds were evaluated. Good photoluminescence quantum yields for compounds of series 5 were observed. Compound 2f, incorporating the 1,2,4-oxadiazole ring shows a very strong reduction in emissive properties.  相似文献
