This paper presents the results of an experimental study of a twin-fluid internally mixed swirl atomizer. In this type of injectors, atomization is attained by injecting a small amount of air (i.e. of the order of less than 16% of the mass flow rate of liquid) into a liquid stream within the injector and the two-phase air liquid mixture is passed through a swirling passage to impart a swirling motion to the flow. Since most of the energy for atomization is supplied to the liquid by the atomizing air, a significantly small pressure drop can produce very fine spray with a small amount of atomizing air. At low values of air–liquid mass ratio (ALR), the appreciable tangential component of velocity with respect to the axial velocity provides a hollow cone spray structure, which turns into a solid cone spray with the increase in axial momentum, through either an increase in ALR or the liquid supply pressure. The results presented in this paper suggest that the investigated injector could be used to control the flow rate and spray characteristics (e.g. spray cone angle, spray solidity, breaking distance, and the droplet diameter) independent of each other by simultaneously varying the supply pressure of the liquid and the atomizing air flow rate. The controlled atomization studied in this paper for a twin-fluid internally mixed swirl atomizer makes it attractive to be used for various commercial applications as the atomizer is capable of providing various spray characteristics depending upon the application requirement.

In this paper, we focused on modeling the collision phenomenon between two liquid droplets for application in spray simulations. It has been known that the existing O’Rourke collision model widely used in CFD codes is inaccurate in determining collision outcomes and droplet behavior. In addition, since the collision probability of the model follows a statistical approach involving computational cell geometry, the prediction results should be strongly dependent on the cell size. As a result, to more accurately calculate droplet collisions, the technique for predicting the droplet velocity and its direction after collision must be extended for use in spray modeling. Further, it is also necessary to consider all the possible collision outcomes, such as bouncing, stretching separation, reflexive separation and coalescence. Therefore, this paper describes the appropriateness of a composite concept for modeling collision outcomes and the implementation of deterministic collision algorithms into a multidimensional CFD code for the calculation of post-collisional droplet movements. Furthermore, the existing model does not consider the formation of satellite droplets. For this reason, our present modeling concept includes a fragmenting droplet collision model. Using the present model, we have validated the collision interactions between liquid droplets under high Weber number conditions by comparing our calculations with experimental results from a binary droplet collision. This paper also deals with the application of the model to inter-impingement sprays by analyzing the atomization characteristics, such as mean droplet size and velocity, spray tip penetrations and spray-shapes of the impinging spray using the suggested collision algorithms and then comparing the results with available experimental data.

A twin-fluid nozzle was proposed for low-pressure atomization. The nozzle is featured by swirling air flows in the mixing chamber. Liquid medium is thereby inhaled due to the pressure difference. An experimental work was performed to investigate the atomization performance of the nozzle and the hydrogen peroxide solution served as the liquid medium. Droplet size and droplet velocity were measured. Effects of the diameter of the air-injection orifice and the air-injection pressure were investigated. The results show that small droplet size is achieved with the proposed nozzle. As the spray develops, Sauter mean diameter (SMD) of the droplets decreases first and then increases, irrespective of the variation of the air-injection orifice diameter and the air-injection pressure. Overall SMD varies inversely with the air-injection orifice diameter and air-injection pressure. Near the nozzle, cross-sectional velocity distribution exhibits a peak-valley pattern, which is replaced with uniformized velocity distributions away from the nozzle. Similarity of cross-sectional radial velocity distribution at different air pressures is evidenced. Furthermore, the correlation between droplet size and droplet velocity is established.

The present paper reports a complete set of measurements made with a two-component phase Doppler anemometer of the two-phase flow generated at the impact of a transient gasoline spray onto a flat surface. The spray is generated by a pintle injector and the fuel used was gasoline. The measurements of droplet size–velocity were processed to provide time fluxes of number, mass, normal momentum, and energy of the poly-dispersion of droplets ejected at impact, and analyzed based on predictive tools available in the literature. The results show that splash is the dominant mechanism by which secondary droplets are ejected from the surface, either in the stagnation region or in the core region of the spray. In the stagnation region, a large fraction of each incident droplet adheres to the surface and the axial incident momentum contributes with a larger parcel than tangential momentum. As a result, the normal velocity of ejected droplets is much smaller than that of the original incident droplets, while tangential velocity is enhanced. The region near the stagnation point is immediately flooded upon impact of the leading front of the spray, forming a liquid film that is forced to move radially outwards as droplets continue to impinge during the steady period. Spray/wall interaction in the core region thus occurs in the presence of a moving thin liquid film, which enhances transfer of tangential momentum. As a result, film spreading and dynamics as a result of impingement forces are crucial to accurate model spray/wall interaction. The outer region of the spray is dominated by the vortical structure induced by shear forces, which entrains small responsive secondary droplets to re-impinge. Furthermore, prediction of the outcome of spray impact requires a precise knowledge of the two-phase flow in the presence of the target.

An experimental study was performed to investigate the macroscopic behavior and atomization characteristics of a high-speed diesel spray impinged on the wall at various injection and impinging conditions. The development processes of sprays impinged on the wall were visualized using the spray visualization system composed of a Nd:YAG laser and an intensified charge-coupled device (ICCD) camera. The atomization characteristics of the impinged spray on the wall were also explored in terms of mean droplet diameter and velocity distributions by using a phase Doppler particle analyzer (PDPA) system. The results provide the effects of injection parameters, wall conditions, and the other various experimental conditions on the macroscopic behavior and atomization characteristics of the impinged sprays on the wall.

Numerical simulation of primary atomization at high Reynolds number is still a challenging problem. In this work a multiscale approach for the numerical simulation of liquid jet primary atomization is applied, using an Eulerian-Lagrangian coupling. In this approach, an Eulerian volume of fluid (VOF) method, where the Reynolds stresses are closed by a Reynolds stress model is applied to model the global spreading of the liquid jet. The formation of the micro-scale droplets, which are usually smaller than the grid spacing in the computational domain, is modelled by an energy-based sub-grid model. Where the disruptive forces (turbulence and surface pressure) of turbulent eddies near the surface of the jet overcome the capillary forces, droplets are released with the local properties of the corresponding eddies. The dynamics of the generated droplets are modelled using Lagrangian particle tracking (LPT). A numerical coupling between the Eulerian and Lagrangian frames is then established via source terms in conservation equations. As a follow-up study to our investigation in Saeedipour et al. (2016a), the present paper aims at modelling drop formation from liquid jets at high Reynolds numbers in the atomization regime and validating the simulation results against in-house experiments. For this purpose, phase-Doppler anemometry (PDA) was used to measure the droplet size and velocity distributions in sprays produced by water jet breakup at different Reynolds numbers in the atomization regime. The spray properties, such as droplet size spectra, local and global Sauter-mean drop sizes and velocity distributions obtained from the simulations are compared with experiment at various locations with very good agreement.

This study compares experimental measurements and numerical simulations of liquid droplets over heated (to a near surface temperature of 423 K) and unheated cylinders. The numerical model is based on an unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) formulation using a stochastic separated flow (SSF) approach for the droplets that includes submodels for droplet dispersion, heat and mass transfer, and impact on a solid surface. The details of the droplet impact model are presented and the model is used to simulate water spray impingement on a cylinder. Computational results are compared with experimental measurements using phase Doppler interferometry (PDI). Overall, good agreement is observed between predictions and experimental measurements of droplet mean size and velocity downstream of the cylinder.

The purpose of this study is to characterize the atomization of a jet of water sprayed into the air at high velocity through a commercial nozzle widely used for sprinkler irrigation. The typical diameter of the droplets present in the spray is in the range of several tens of micrometers to several millimeters. They are visualized by ombroscopy. A specific Droplet Tracking Velocimetry (DTV) technique is developed to estimate the size and velocity of these highly polydispersed droplets that are distinctly non spherical. This analysis is performed from the rupture of the liquid core region (about a distance of 550 nozzle diameters) to the dispersed zone (about a distance of 900 nozzle diameters). With this technique, we obtain joint size-velocity measurements that are rarely produced. Especially two velocity components and also a large diameter range are characterized at the same time; while with other techniques, such as Particle Doppler Anemometry (PDA), the diameter range is quite reduced and requires specific settings. Additional measurements of the liquid volume fraction are performed using a single mode fiber-optic probe. In the light of our experimental data, it appears that the turbulent droplet motion in the spray is strongly anisotropic. This anisotropy is quite unexpected because other studies on sprays (generally concerned with engine applications) show a relatively low anisotropy. We attribute this increase of anisotropy to the fact that, for this type of spray, the droplet relaxation time is long in comparison to the characteristic time of the turbulence and that biggest droplets are still submitted to atomization process. This strong anisotropy is responsible for the poor radial dispersion of the spray.

Airblast atomizers are especially useful and commonplace in liquid fuel combustion applications. However, the spray formation processes, the droplet dynamics and the final drop size distributions are still not sufficiently understood due to the coupled gas-liquid interactions and turbulence generation. Therefore, empirical and semi-empirical approaches are typically used to estimate the global spray parameters. To develop a physical understanding of the spray evolution, a plain-jet airblast atomizer was investigated in an atmospheric spray rig using the phase-Doppler technique. The simultaneous drop size and axial and radial velocity components were measured on radial traverses across the spray at various axial distances from the nozzle for a range of atomizing pressures. The droplet turbulent and mean kinetic energies were found to be proportional to the atomizing pressure. Hence, the scatter of the radial motion of the droplets increased with the atomizing pressure. A droplet stability analysis was performed to locate the regions characterized by ongoing secondary atomization. The volume-to-surface diameter, D32, of the fully developed spray was compared with estimates provided by five published formulae. The role of liquid viscosity, hence the Ohnesorge number, was found to be negligible in the investigated regime. Three commonly used size distribution functions were fitted to the measured data to analyze their dependence on the atomizing pressure. The Gamma distribution function was found to give the best approximation to the atomization process.

The droplet sizes and electrical charges under different applied electrical voltages are experimentally measured for a liquid-liquid electrostatic spray system. Considering droplet size and charge distributions, the two-dimensional motion for a group of charged droplets in a liquid-liquid electrostatic atomization system is simulated. From measured droplet size and charge distributions, the simulation can obtain the velocities and positions in a two-dimensional domain for all simulated droplets at different times. The various forces acting on droplet as well as their effects on droplet velocity and trajectory are analyzed and the liquid-liquid electrostatic atomization characteristics are revealed. In addition, for one-dimensional motion trajectory of larger droplet, the comparison between simulation and experiment is also conducted and a general agreement can be obtained.

A theoretical model of a two-phase air/dispersed water spray flow in an icing wind tunnel is presented here. The mutual interactions taking place within the dispersed phase known as binary droplet collisions, as well as gravitational sedimentation are considered. Where large droplets and low air stream velocities are concerned, the effect of gravity on droplet dynamics is considerable. Gravity causes the vertical deflection of droplet trajectories and an increase in liquid water content (LWC) in the bottom half of the wind tunnel. Droplet collision tends to influence the size, trajectory and velocity of droplets thus affecting the characteristics of the flow and, thereby, the formation of ice on the object placed in the wind tunnel. The present model simulates droplet motion and droplet collision in an icing wind tunnel, where it may be observed that bouncing, stable coalescence, or coalescence followed by separation are the possible outcomes of collision. In the theoretical examination, firstly, the effect of gravity on the vertical deflection of droplet trajectories and on the vertical distribution of the LWC near the icing object are taken into account, while droplet collision is disregarded. Then both factors are considered and collision outcome is determined together with the size and velocity of post-collision droplets. The initial droplet size distribution (DSD), as it occurs at the nozzle outlet, is estimated by a curve in accordance with previous experimental results. The DSD is determined theoretically near the icing object, which makes it possible to calculate the median volume diameter and the LWC of the aerosol cloud. The simulation results with regard to the LWC are compared to the experimental results obtained in this research and a satisfactory qualitative coincidence is to be found between them.

The spray atomization characteristics of an undiluted biodiesel fuel (soybean oil methyl ester, SME) in a diesel engine were investigated and compared with that of diesel fuel (ultra low sulfur diesel, ULSD). The experimental results were compared with numerical results predicted by the KIVA-3V code. The spray characteristics of the spray tip penetration, spray area, spray centroid and injection delay were analyzed using images obtained from a visualization system. The Sauter mean diameter (SMD) was analyzed using a droplet analyzer system to investigate the atomization characteristics. It was found that the peak injection rate increases and advances when the injection pressure increases due to the increase of the initial injection momentum. The injection rate of the SME, which has a higher density than diesel fuel, is higher than that of diesel fuel despite its low injection velocity. The high ambient pressure induces the shortening of spray tip penetration of the SME. Moreover, the predicted spray tip penetration pattern is similar to the pattern observed experimentally. The SMD of the SME decreases along the axial distance. The predicted local and overall SMD distribution patterns of diesel and SME fuels illustrate similar tendencies when compared with the experimental droplet size distribution patterns.

Breakup characteristics of liquid droplets impinging on a hot surface are investigated experimentally with the wall temperatures in the Leidenfrost temperature range of 220–330°C for n-decane fuel. Factors influencing droplet breakup are wall temperature, impinging velocity, droplet diameter and impinging angle. The 50% breakup probability shows that the impinging velocity decreases linearly with the droplet diameter increase and there exists an optimum impinging angle near 80° having the minimum value in the impinging velocity for given wall temperature and droplet size. Near the wall temperature of 250°C corresponding to the Leidenfrost temperature, a peculiar nonlinear behavior in the breakup probability is observed. This work was supported by the Turbo and Power Machinery Research Center, Seoul National University.

The focus of this study was to investigate the spray characteristics and atomization performance of gasoline fuel (G100), bioethanol fuel (E100), and bioethanol blended gasoline fuel (E85) in a direct injection gasoline injector in a gasoline engine. The overall spray and atomization characteristics such as an axial spray tip penetration, spray width, and overall SMD were measured experimentally and predicted by using KIVA-3V code. The development process and the appearance timing of the vortices in the test fuels were very similar. In addition, the numerical results accurately described the experimentally observed spray development pattern and shape, the beginning position of the vortex, and the spray breakup on the spray surface. Moreover, the increased injection pressure induced the occurrence of a clear circular shape in the downstream spray and a uniform mixture between the injected spray droplets and ambient air. The axial spray tip penetrations of the test fuels were similar, while the spray width and spray cone angle of E100 were slightly larger than the other fuels. In terms of atomization performance, the E100 fuel among the tested fuels had the largest droplet size because E100 has a high kinematic viscosity and surface tension.

This study is investigating three-dimensional numerical simulation of a Newtonian droplet impact and break on two square cylinders based on dynamic contact angle of droplet at the spatial interface between two solid–fluid phases. The droplet impact details and morphology studied in the present work could provide ideas for the spray wall impingement modeling in the simulation of many industrial applications, such as spray painting and liquid cooling of surfaces. The droplet impact is investigated on two square cylinders in 9 different modes with different droplet diameters and physical conditions such as different positions of droplet. The volume of fluid (VOF) method was used with open-source software. The results have been compared and validated quantitatively and qualitatively with the experimental results. Results represent droplet diameter into cylinder dimension and velocity profiles are affected on number of broken droplets, break times and droplet deformation. Also, mean velocities of droplet after impact on two square cylinders at first break time were 0, 0.025, 0.12, 0.47, 0.11, 0.08, 0.2, 0.012, 0.19 m/s for cases 1–9, respectively. Moreover, in case 7 that droplet diameter into cylinder dimension was 2, the maximum number of break-up into secondary droplets was 10 drops that occurred for 4 times.

This paper analyzes the transient characteristics of intermittent sprays produced by the single-point impact of multiple cylindrical jets. The aim is to perform a transient analysis of the intermittent atomization process to study the effect of varying the number of impinging jets in the hydrodynamic mechanisms of droplet formation. The results evidence that hydrodynamic mechanisms underlying the physics of ligament fragmentation in 2-impinging jets sprays also apply to sprays produced with more than 2 jets during the main period of injection. Ligaments detaching from the liquid sheet, as well as from its bounding rim, have been identified and associated with distinct droplet clusters, which become more evident as the number of impinging jets increases. Droplets produced by detached ligaments constitute the main spray, and their axial velocity becomes more uniformly distributed with 4-impinging jets because of a delayed ligament fragmentation. Multijet spray dispersion patterns are geometric depending on the number of impinging jets. Finally, an analysis on the Weber number of droplets suggests that multijet sprays are more likely to deposit on interposed surfaces, thus becoming a promising and competitive atomization solution for improving spray cooling.
