The preparation of nematic liquid crystals mixtures results in changing of molecular relaxations in comparison to pure substances. Typical example is the creation of dual-frequency nematic liquid crystals using a base mixture and functional admixtures. In this paper, we present how dielectric properties of starting compounds change at mixture preparation. Three dual-frequency nematic mixtures of different composition were prepared and examined by means of dielectric spectroscopy in a wide frequency (100 Hz to 10 MHz) and temperature range (170°C to ?60°C). Parameters of detected modes for pure compounds and final mixtures were calculated and their relationships with crossover frequency are discussed.  相似文献

In the present work, the dielectric properties of recycled liquid crystals (LCs) (non-purified, purified, and doped with diamond nanoparticles at 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2 wt%) were investigated. The studied LC mixtures were obtained from industrial recycling of end-of-life LC displays presenting mainly nematic phases. Dielectric measurements were carried out at room temperature on a frequency range from 0.1 to 106 Hz using an impedance analyzer. The amplitude of the oscillating voltage was fixed at 1 V using cells with homogeneous and homeotropic alignments. Results show that the dielectric anisotropy of all purified samples presents positive values and decreases after the addition of diamond nanoparticles to the LC mixtures. DC conductivity values were obtained by applying the universal law of dielectric response proposed by Jonscher. In addition, conductivity of the doped LC mixtures is lower than that of the undoped and non-purified LC.  相似文献

We experimentally studied the nematic-isotropic phase transition of (a) binary mixtures consisting of nematic and racemic liquid crystals and (b) binary mixtures consisting of positive and negative dielectric liquid crystals. We observed that the phase transition temperature is very sensitive to the chemical structures of the constituent components. We also used Maier-Saupe theory to calculate the transition temperature of binary mixtures. By fitting the experimental data, we obtained the interaction coupling constant between the constituent components.  相似文献

The synthesis of variously difluoro-substituted 4-butyl-4?-[2-(4-butylphenyl)ethynyl]-1,1?-biphenyls is presented and discussed. Molecular correlations between positions of fluorine atoms at phenyltolane core and mesomorphic, dielectric properties of newly synthesised liquid crystals (LC) have been drawn and discussed. New LC molecules exhibit a wide range of nematic phase and are promising components of liquid crystalline mixtures. They were characterised by 1H NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry analysis. Phase transition temperatures, enthalpies, mesomorphic and dielectric properties were confirmed by a polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and dielectric spectroscopy.  相似文献

Physical studies on mixture of calamitic and discotic nematic liquid crystals are meagre although they are potential for optimising physical properties. Here, we report experimental studies on the phase diagram and physical properties of mixtures of ambient temperature discotic and calamitic nematic liquid crystals. A substantial decrease in several physical properties such as birefringence, dielectric anisotropy and elastic constants are observed with increasing wt% of discotic compound. On the other hand a large increase in the rotational viscosity is observed. Based on the experimental results a simple model of mutual orientation of the rod-like and disc-like molecules is proposed.  相似文献

We analyze the dielectric properties of the liquid crystal M5 used to investigate the electrohydrodynamics instability in nematic liquid crystals. We show that the spectra of the electrical impedance of doped samples of M5 with several concentrations of salt and of acid can be interpreted by assuming the doped liquid crystal as a dispersion of ions in a dielectric liquid. The analysis has been performed by considering the electrodes as blocking. From the best fit of the experimental data relevant to the real and imaginary parts of the electrical impedance of the cells, we derive the diffusion coefficients for the positive and negative ions and their bulk density. According to our analysis, in the limit of small concentrations of doping substance, the effective dielectric constant of the resulting liquid is, practically, independent of the doping.  相似文献

The solid + liquid phase diagram, drawn from thermal and dielectric measurements, is presented. It exibits a miscibility gap at 0.08 ≤ χ2 ≤ 0.58, and two eutectics. The occurrence of a (likely 1:1) intermediate compound, which decomposes on melting into two immiscible liquids, is postulated. Mixed crystals are observed in the sulfolane richer region.Deviations of the liquid mixtures from ideality, positive in the case of viscosity and negative in the case of dielectric constants, are evidenced.  相似文献

The dielectric permittivity of the nematic liquid crystalline mixture E7, doped with a low concentration of the photochromic material thiophene fulgide, was studied and compared with the properties of the pure E7. Fulgides are a group of thermally stable photochromic materials. On irradiation with ultraviolet light, a ring-closure occurs, giving an isomer which is stable if the dye is kept in the dark. The isomerism induces changes to the steric, dipolar and electronic conjugation properties of the species. A capacitive technique was used to determine the dielectric constants of the fulgide-doped liquid crystalline mixtures. The parallel and perpendicular components of dielectric constant were measured using a single cell, in the latter case in the presence of a magnetic field. Measurements were made on the photochromic system before and after ultraviolet irradiation and a marked variation in the dielectric properties of the mixture was observed. This was shown to be entirely due to the differences in phase transition temperatures between the irradiated and non-irradiated guest-host mixtures.  相似文献

We report the synthesis and liquid crystalline behaviour of two series of para-substituted terphenyls as dopants with a rigid rod-like shape, rather than a wedge-, pear- or banana-shape, for guest–host nematic mixtures with flexoelectric properties. One series of liquid crystalline dopants is of low-to-strongly negative dielectric anisotropy and the other is of low-to-strongly positive dielectric anisotropy. The usefulness of apolar and polar rod-like dopants as components of flexoelectric nematic mixtures of positive dielectric anisotropy for use in LCDs is investigated in general and the dependence of the flexoelectric properties of the doped nematic mixtures on the polarity of the dopants is studied in particular. The correlation between the concentration of the dopant and the magnitude of the flexoelastic ratio of several guest–host nematic mixtures is investigated.  相似文献

The present article reports dielectric relaxation study of an unusual shaped liquid crystal dimer (H shape) in the temperature range 40–85°C. The study of this liquid crystal dimer is important due to the presence of azo central linkage, which is photosensitive. The dielectric relaxation study indicates coupling between the electric field and the liquid crystal molecule of H shaped dimer. Various dielectric properties for this liquid crystal dimer are quite different from the conventional liquid crystals. The dielectric relaxation observed in the smectic phase is due to the reorientation of molecule along the director in the presence of an applied electric field. The temperature dependence of the dielectric parameters, such as relaxation frequency, relaxation strength and distribution parameter have been evaluated for this liquid crystal dimer for both planar as well as homeotropically aligned cell and then compared. The Cole–Cole equation has been used to evaluate the aforementioned parameters.  相似文献

Dielectric, optical and electro-optical properties of four chlorinated nematic liquid crystal compounds and a eutectic mixture were characterized. Some chlorinated liquid crystals are found to exhibit a wide nematic range, modest dielectric and optical anisotropies, low viscosity and small UV absorption. Potential application of mixtures containing chlorinated liquid crystals for information displays in the visible spectral region is foreseeable.  相似文献

The effect of nitric acid (HNO3) addition on the growth of triglycine sulphate (TGS) crystal has been studied from the aqueous solution for various concentrations of nitric acid. Significant changes in the crystal size and morphology have been observed in all the grown samples. Single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction analyses confirm the structure and cell parameter values of pure and HNO3 doped TGS crystals. FT-Raman and FTIR spectra confirm the characteristics absorption bands of pure and HNO3 doped TGS crystals. The composition of TGS crystals have been confirmed by CHNS analysis. Physical properties such as thermal, dielectric and mechanical studies have been performed for the pure and HNO3 doped TGS crystals. The dielectric constants of the crystals have been studied as a function of frequency. The results suggest that the HNO3 is doped into TGS crystal and that the doping increases its dielectric constant.  相似文献

Binary dual-frequency nematic liquid crystals synthesised at the Military University of Technology were measured by dielectric means. All the investigated materials exhibit low crossover frequency. They were composed of only two molecules with longitudinal and transverse dipole moments. The main difference is the molecular weight of the molecules. Results of relaxation parameters of detected mode and crossover frequency are shown. The influence of structure on ion conductivity is discussed. The broad phase transition from an isotropic phase to a nematic one was observed.  相似文献

Two newly synthesized liquid crystalline compounds were dissolved in room temperature LC hosts, E7 and PTTP-24/36, to assess their properties. It was found that these mixtures have higher birefringence, larger dielectric anisotropy, and better elastic properties than the hosts. Satisfactory viscoelastic coefficients were also obtained for these mixtures, showing that they are promising LC materials for applications in the near IR region.  相似文献

Ionic liquid crystals combine the unique solvent properties of ionic liquids with self-organization found for liquid crystals. We report a detailed analysis of the structure-property relationship of a series of new imidazolium-based liquid crystals with an extended aromatic core. Investigated parameters include length and nature of the tails, the length of the rigid core, the lateral substitution pattern, and the nature of the counterion. Depending on the molecular structure, two mesophases were observed: a bilayered SmA2 phase and the more common monolayered SmA phase, both strongly interdigitated. Most materials show mesophases stable to high temperatures. For some cases, crystallization could be suppressed, and room-temperature liquid crystalline phases were obtained. The mesomorphic properties of several mixtures of ionic liquid crystals were investigated. Many mixtures showed full miscibility and ideal mixing behavior; however, in some instances we observed, surprisingly, complete demixing of the component SmA phases. The ionic liquid crystals and mixtures presented have potential applications, due to their low melting temperatures, wide temperature ranges, and stability with extra ion-doping.  相似文献

Microtubule particles and metal-coated microtubules were dispersed in various host liquid crystal mixtures. Dispersion effects were evaluated as a function of liquid crystal type, viscosity, dielectric anisotropy and surface interaction. Experimental results indicated that all the types of liquid crystals studied were aligned perpendicular to the microtubule surfaces, regardless of liquid crystal composition or various surface coatings used on the metal-coated microtubules. Low concentrations of the metal-coated microtubules in nematic liquid crystal hosts were aligned by flow or cell surface alignment conditions, and could be modulated by electric or magnetic fields. We observed better microtubules dispersion uniformity in high viscosity liquid crystal host mixtures and in liquid crystal-monomers than in isotropic fluids. Microtubules particles dispersed in ROTN-404 liquid crystal mixture had a much higher birefringence in the microwave region than dispersion in a paraffin oil.  相似文献

In this article, a newly synthesised ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) material, namely LAHS 22, has been characterised. The characterisation of the FLC material has been performed using dielectric relaxation spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and polarisation optical microscopy. We observed an enhancement in the dielectric and electro-optical properties of the FLC material by incorporating gold nanoparticles (GNPs)-decorated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The GNPs-decorated MWCNTs cause an increment in dielectric dispersion (up to kHz), absorption, spontaneous polarisation and rotational viscosity of the FLC material. The pure and GNPs-decorated MWCNTs doped FLC cells were analysed by means of various dielectric spectroscopic and optical measurements. The observed enhancement in the dielectric and electro-optical properties of the FLC material has also been studied with concentration of GNPs-decorated MWCNTs in FLC material. The GNPs-decorated MWCNTs/FLC composites are not only of fundamental importance, but also useful materials for device applications such as liquid crystal displays and memory devices.  相似文献

Liquid-crystalline blue phases (BPs) are stable only for very narrow temperature range between the isotropic and the chiral nematic phase that severely hinders their applicability. Herein, the aminoazobenzol group was chemically grafted onto epoxy group of graphene oxide (GO) via addition reaction. Successful grafting of aminoazobenzol group was confirmed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV–vis absorption spectra and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The resultant aminoazobenzol group–modified GO sheets, which is reduced (RGO-Az), were easily redispersable in common organic solvents or liquid crystals (LCs). By doping different contents of RGO-Az, nanosheets could stabilise BP and increase the BP range. When doped with 0.5 wt% RGO-Az, the mixtures show the wider range with 5.9°C than the range with 3.6°C of BPLCs without RGO-Az. Meanwhile, the phase sequence and the range of the aforementioned phases are reproducible upon heating and cooling, which shows that the BPs doped with RGO-Az nanosheets are thermodynamically stable.  相似文献
