In an effort to synthesise thermally stable bent-core nematogens with fairly low transition temperatures and wide nematic mesophase range, we have synthesised five new series of azo-substituted bent-core compounds without Schiff’s base unit. Here, we studied the effect of different lateral substituents (–CH3 and –Cl), at two different positions in one of the arms, on the mesogenic properties. We found that such variation in the molecular architecture has a clear-cut impact on the transition temperatures as well as the liquid crystalline properties. The mesogenic properties of these compounds were studied using polarising optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The exact nature of different mesophases is investigated using X-ray diffraction studies. The results obtained indicated the presence of smectic nano clusters in the nematic mesophases of these compounds. We observed domains of opposite handedness in these nematic phases. The unusual properties of these mesophases were investigated by electro-optical studies. The electro-convection pattern study showed that these nematic mesophases are of negative dielectric anisotropic in nature. The compounds synthesised here exhibit photo-switching both in solution and in their nematic mesophases, a property that can be exploited for practical applications.  相似文献

Here, we report four new homologous series of azo-functionalised achiral bent-core compounds. The paper deals with the design, synthesis and liquid crystalline properties of four new homologous series of photochromic materials. In this study, we have investigated the effect of the presence of –N=N– linkage at different locations of the molecular architecture, on the mesomorphic properties. The molecular structures of all the newly synthesised compounds are established using the organic spectroscopic methods. The liquid crystalline properties are investigated using polarising optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction and electro-optical studies. They exhibit B1 (colr) and B2 (SmCAPA) mesophases. We find that the presence of the –N=N– linkage at different locations in the molecular architecture does not seem to have much effect on the mesogenic behaviour of such compounds. However, we clearly see a profound effect of the location of the –N=N– linkage on the photo-induced electro-optical properties of these compounds.  相似文献

A new series of asymmetric bent-core compounds were synthesised using azo linkages with equal as well as unequal terminal alkyl chains and their photo and electrical switching properties investigated. The mesomorphic properties were characterised using polarised optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. The lower homologues of the series of compounds show a B1 phase whereas higher homologues exhibit a B2 phase. The B2 phase shows an anticlinic-antiferroelectric switching behaviour during electro-optic measurements. The photo-switching properties of the azobenzene containing bent-core molecules were investigated using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The trans to cis photo isomerisation was observed at 25 s whereas reverse processes took 14 h in chloroform.  相似文献

We report the synthesis and mesomorphic properties of a homologous series (10a–10g) of bent-core molecules constructed through covalent linkage of structurally non-symmetrical rod-like mesogens connected with a 1, 3-phenylene unit. The study of homologous series underlines the importance of length and nature of terminal chains. The homologues of shorter chains show a typical non-switchable rectangular columnar B1 phase, while the switchable lamellar (B2) phase is induced on moving to higher homologues. X-ray diffraction patterns indicate the presence of B1 and B2 mesophases. Polarised optical microscopy investigations under electric field in the B2 phases revealed the existence of anticlinic antiferroelectric texture. The measured spontaneous polarisation value in one of the compounds is 936 nC cm?2, a high polarisation value in bent-core liquid crystals.  相似文献

Forty new bent-core compounds, unsymmetrically substituted about a central phenyl ring, were investigated for their mesomorphic properties. The effect of fluorine substituents in different positions of the phenyl rings of one of the arms of the bent-core compounds on the mesophases were examined in detail. Most of the compounds exhibit the lamellar antiferroelectric B2 mesophase. The mesophases were investigated by textural observation by polarizing microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and electro-optical studies.  相似文献

Thirty eight compounds composed of achiral banana-shaped molecules belonging to three new homologous series have been synthesized and their mesomorphic properties investigated. The mesophases have been characterized using a combination of polarized light microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, miscibility methods and X-ray diffraction measurements. All the compounds reported exhibit mesomorphic properties. Most of the homologues in the three series show B1 and B2 phases and the transition temperatures of these are lower in the fluoro substituted compounds. Some of the lower homologues of the fluoro substituted derivatives also show the nematic phase.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This work presents new rod-like compounds being fluorene derivatives linked with other parts of the core at 2 and 7 positions – its synthesis and properties. The fluorene moiety is located in the central position of the four rings molecular core. The chain system in most cases was symmetrical and limited to pentyl or hexyl chains. To study the influence of the lateral substituents on mesomorphic properties two types of substituents have been incorporated, centrally located various short alkyl groups at fluorene’s 9,9 positions and outer core fluorosubstitutions located at side phenyl rings. All synthesised compounds exhibit liquid crystalline properties, where for laterally non-substituted and fluorosubstituted derivatives the dominant phases are smectics, while the nematics phases (nematic and chiral nematic – observed mostly on cooling cycle) occurs for compounds having alkyl substituents at 9,9 positions of fluorene. The synthetic methodology and mesomorphic properties of title compounds will be presented in detail as well as photophysical properties such as UV-visible absorption spectra and fluorescence spectra.  相似文献

A series of bent-core V-shaped mesogens consisting of salicylaldimine mesogenic segments have been synthesized and their mesomorphic behaviour characterized. In an attempt to understand structure–property relationships, the lengths of the terminal alkoxy chains have been varied from C2 to C12, C16 and C18, resulting in 13 new bent-core V-shaped molecules. The thermal behaviour of these new compounds has been investigated by optical microscopy, calorimetry and X-ray diffraction studies. In general the compounds show conventional mesophases similar to those shown by calamitic LCs. The materials exhibit good thermal stability, even though their melting and clearing transition temperatures are high as a result of the presence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the H-atom of the hydroxyl group and the N-atom of the imine functionality. The phase appearing in the first member of the series with ethoxy chains is a nematic, while the C3 to C6 derivatives exhibit a smectic A phase as well as a nematic phase. The higher homologues, C7 to C12, C16 and C18, show only the smectic A phase. X-ray studies reveal that the SmA phase has a partially bilayer (interdigitated) structure. Remarkably, in some cases, the smectic A phase supercools well below room temperature. It is apparent from our studies that increasing the length of the alkoxy chains promotes smectic behaviour, in agreement with the general observation made for such bent-core molecules.  相似文献

Several new hockey stick-shaped azo compounds are designed and synthesised with an aim to study the effect of different types of linkages and their direction of linking on the mesomorphic properties in such systems. The new compounds synthesised are characterised by spectroscopic methods. The liquid crystalline properties are investigated using polarizing optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. They exhibited a variety of mesophases such as nematic (N), smectic A (SmA), anticlinic smectic C (SmCa), B1, etc. We found that the direction of linkage groups has a major effect on the mesomorphic properties when compared to the effect of different types of linkage groups. We observed a reversible photo-switching phenomenon of these compounds in their solution UV–vis spectra.  相似文献

A series of small angle bent-core (V-shaped) mesogens carrying 1,7-naphthalene as a central core linked with lateral halogenated (chlorinated or fluorinated) Schiff-base side wings and alkylthio terminal tails of variable carbon number (n = 12, 16) was synthesised in order to reduce the transition temperature and improve the phase stability of bent-core liquid crystal molecules. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarising optical microscopy (POM), small-angle X-ray scattering system (SAXS) and two-dimensional X-ray diffractometer were applied to ascertain the mesomorphic structure and phase transition temperatures of the compounds. The results confirm that all the molecules show thermotropic liquid crystalline behaviour and exhibit hexagonal columnar phase (Colh) in a certain temperature range. Compared with the homologous compounds without lateral halogen, the cleaning point temperature of lateral halogenated V-shaped compounds generally decrease and the Colh phase ranges are more extensive. The influence of lateral chlorine on the cleaning point temperature is more obvious, as well as the effect of lateral fluorine on the range of Colh phase.  相似文献

Novel chiral amino acid derived ionic liquid crystals with amine and amide moieties as spacers between the imidazolium head group and the alkyl chain were synthesised. The key step in the synthesis utilised the relatively uncommon SO3 leaving group in a microwave‐assisted reaction. The mesomorphic properties of the mesogens were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarising optical microscopy (POM) and X‐ray diffraction. All liquid crystalline salts exhibit a smectic A mesophase geometry with strongly interdigitated bilayer structures. An increase of the steric bulk of the stereogenic centre hindered the formation of mesophases. In case of phenylalanine‐derived derivatives a mesomorphic behaviour was observed for shorter alkyl chains as compared to other amino acid derivatives indicating an additional stabilising effect by the phenyl moiety.  相似文献

Three structural variants of azo substituted achiral bent-core compounds are reported. Here, the effect of symmetrical and non-symmetrical arms at 1,3-positions of the central phenyl ring on the mesogenic properties of the resulting bent-core azo compounds is studied. The structures of all the compounds synthesised are confirmed by the organic spectroscopic methods. The liquid crystalline properties are investigated using polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction studies. It was found that the non-symmetrical molecules are more conducive to mesomorphism than the symmetrical ones. We observed B1 (Colr), B2 (SmCAPA) and B7 mesophases in these compounds. The B7 mesophase was found to have a modulated layer structure. Interestingly, a reversible field-induced transition from the B7-like structure to the racemic SmCAPF was also observed. We also report the photo-induced studies in the B7 mesophase and make a comparison of these results with those obtained in a B2 mesophase. From our studies, we observed that these effects are more profound in the case of B7 mesophase when compared to the B2 mesophase in such systems.  相似文献

A novel series of four-ring achiral ferroelectric liquid crystals containing 1,2,4-oxadiazole cores with unsymmetrical substitutions at C-3 and C-5 positions are synthesised and characterised. A fluoro substituted biphenyl moiety is prepared by Suzuki coupling reaction and is directly attached to the oxadiazole core at the C-5 position for the first time in the literature. An octyl benzoate is attached to the oxadiazole core at the C-3 position of it. All the compounds exhibit polar smectic (B2) mesophases with ferroelectric switching along with the orthogonal smectic-A mesophases. These compounds possess high mesomorphic thermal ranges of polar smectic phases and are towards the ambient temperatures. The influence of a more electronegative fluorine substituent on the electron rich biphenyl moiety (at the C-5 position) of the oxadiazole core is analysed for the prevalence and abundance of polar smectic (ferroelectric) mesophases.  相似文献

A series of non-symmetric liquid crystal compounds consisting of two different semi-rigid anisometric cores, namely 1,3,4-oxidiazole and biphenyl units, and two short terminal groups, have been synthesised in good yield. It has been shown by polarising optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry that all these compounds display liquid crystalline behaviour, with nematic and/or smectic A mesophases. The nature of the mesophases is dependent on the electronic properties of the terminal groups. In methylene chloride solution all the compounds displayed a room temperature emission with λmax at 358–396 nm and quantum yields of 0.29–0.56. The effect of the terminal groups on the mesomorphic and photoluminescent properties is briefly discussed in the context of their electronic characteristics.  相似文献

New unconventional T-shaped non-symmetrical dimeric liquid crystalline compounds have been synthesised and their thermotropic properties studied on the hot-stage of a polarising microscope. These compounds consist of an azo-ester mesogenic unit with a range of terminal substituents (–CH3, –OCH3, –NO2 or –Cl) at one end, interconnected by a flexible spacer (n?=?4, 5 or 10) via ether and ester linking units to a biphenyl moiety at the lateral hydroxyl position of the azo-ester. All the compounds were characterised using a combination of elemental analysis and standard spectroscopic methods. The compounds were found to exhibit enantiotropic nematic and smectic mesophases. The effect of different terminal substituents on mesomorphism is discussed.  相似文献

The synthesis and mesomorphic properties of 30 bent-core compounds with a fluorine substituent in one of the outer rings are reported. The banana-shaped compounds are all derived from resorcinol and contain esters as linking groups between the five aromatic rings. The different mesophases have been characterized by polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction studies and electro-optical investigations. The compounds with the longer terminal chains exhibit an antiferroelectric SmCP phase. Upon introduction of a fluorine substituent the layer spacing increases, as compared with the corresponding unsubstituted compound. The introduction of one terminal vinyl group in the mono-substituted bent-core mesogens has no significant influence on the liquid crystalline properties and the switching remains antiferroelectric. Due to the introduction of the terminal double bond, these banana-shaped compounds are suitable for the preparation of siloxane polymers or attachment to a hydrogen-terminated silicon surface.  相似文献

In this preliminary report we present the mesomorphic properties and electro-optic investigations of three new 'banana-shaped' mesogens. The materials are structurally similar to Niori's the original bent-core materials but possess alkylthio substituents in place of alkoxy substituents. Microscopic investigations revealed an unusual 'spiral-domain texture', similar to that observed in the 'B7' phase of related materials. Further investigations support our earlier observations that the materials display antiferroelectric switching in this phase, in two of the new materials studied. The nature of this phase, in comparison with the 'switchable' (B2) and 'chiral-domain' (B4) phases of the original materials, is discussed.  相似文献

Three new homologous series of symmetrical five‐ring bent‐core compounds have been synthesized and investigated for their mesomorphic properties. The laterally unsubstituted parent compounds exhibit a metastable SmCPA phase. However, the two series of compounds containing a strongly polar cyano or nitro group at the angular position of the central phenyl unit show the fascinating classical B7 phase. The mesophases have been characterized using standard techniques.  相似文献

A series of tolane liquid crystals (LCs) containing 2,3-difluorophenyl and allyloxy terminal groups have been synthesised via multi-step reactions. Their thermotropic mesophases, birefringences and dielectric anisotropy properties are discussed by comparison with the non-fluorinated analog. The results show that the allyloxy-based tolane LC 3TOV reveals a high value of the birefringence (0.29), negative dielectric anisotropy (?4.44) and a broad nematic mesophase with a low melting point and high clearing point. The effects of the terminal alkyl chains, the lateral fluoro substituents, the allyloxy terminal group and alkyne bridge on the mesomorphic and physical properties were also discussed. Meanwhile, Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations of molecular conformation and polarisability were used to correlate the experimental findings.  相似文献

Isoxazole-based bent-core liquid crystals (LCs) derived from naturally occurring curcumin were synthesised and their LC properties were investigated by polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction techniques. Five compounds, including a branched alkyl chain derivative, were prepared and characterised. These derivatives exhibit enantiotropic mesophases. While lower homologues display wide-temperature-range nematic phase, a longer-chain derivative 3d shows smectic C phase in addition to the nematic phase. The bent angle in these compounds is in between calamitic LCs and banana LCs. Therefore, the molecules escape from polar order packing observed in typical bent-core LCs. Increasing the length of alkyl chain reduces both melting and isotropic temperatures in the series. However, the compound with branched alkyl chains exhibits significant reduction in the nematic-isotropic temperature only. Detailed XRD experiments confirm the presence of the N phase in the lower homologues and SmC phase in a higher homologue.  相似文献
