The present work emphasizes on the transmission of gamma photons, having energies in the range (241.8–401.8 keV) obtained by Compton scattering technique, to determine mass-attenuation coefficients (μm), molar-extinction coefficients (ε), mass-energy absorption coefficient (μen/ρ), effective atomic number (Zeff), mean free path (MFP), half value layer (HVL), total atomic (σt.a) and electronic (σt.el) cross-sections, and Hounsfield number (H) of various organic compounds like Alcohols, Aldehydes, Ketones, Esters, Amines, Benzene compounds and Water, and further used as radiation shielding. The WinXcom software package is used to compare the experimentally deduced radiation interaction parameters with theory. The theoretical and experimental results are in good agreement within permissible experimental uncertainty. The radiation shielding parameters have been found to vary with gamma-ray energy and effective atomic number for these organic compounds under present investigations.  相似文献

Mass attenuation coefficients (μ/ρ) for Zr, Nb, Mo and Pd elements around their K-edges are measured at 14 energies in the range 15.744–28.564 keV using secondary excitation from thin Zr, Nb, Mo, Rh, Pd, Cd and Sn foils. The measurements were carried out at the K α and K β energy values of the target elements by two techniques: (1) Proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) and (2) 241Am (300 mCi) source. In PIXE, 2 MeV proton-excited X-rays were detected by a Si(Li) detector. In the second case, X-rays excited by 59.54 keV photons from the targets were counted by an HPGe detector under a narrow beam good geometry set-up with sufficient shielding. The results are consistent with theoretical values derived from the XCOM package and indicate that the PIXE data have better statistical accuracy.  相似文献

The mass attenuation coefficient (μ m) of 662 keV gamma rays have been measured in the extended media of bakelite and perspex under different collimation conditions. The increase in attenuation coefficient is seen with increase in sample thickness as well as with collimator size due to the contribution of multiple scattered photons in the uncollided beam of 662 keV gamma rays.  相似文献

The China Dark Matter Experiment (CDEX) is a low background experiment at China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) designed to directly detect dark matter with a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector. In the second phase, CDEX-10, which has a 10 kg germanium array detector system, a liquid argon (LAr) anti-Compton active shielding and cooling system is proposed. To study the properties of the LAr detector, a prototype with an active volume of 7 liters of liquid argon was built and operated. The photoelectron yields, as a critically important parameter for the prototype detector, have been measured to be 0.051-0.079 p.e./keV for 662 keV γ rays at different positions. The good agreement between the experimental and simulation results has provided a reasonable understanding and determination of the important parameters such as the surviving fraction of the Ar2* excimers, the absorption length for 128 nm photons in liquid argon, the reflectivity of Teflon and so on.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The present research focused on the investigation of photon and fast neutron shielding parameters of colemanite mineral doped and undoped concretes. The fabricated concretes have been exposed to gamma rays at 59.5 and 81?keV energies and the measurements have been carried out with NaI(Tl) detector. The parameters of effective atomic number (Zeff) and electron density (Nel) have been determined experimentally and theoretically. The exposure buildup factor (EBF) and energy absorption buildup factor (EBF) have been computed utilizing the Geometric progression (G–P) fitting method. In addition to the photon shielding parameters, the macroscopic effective removal cross-section calculations for fast neutron (ΣR) were performed. As a result, it was observed that the concretes doped with colemanite mineral are not very effective in gamma radiation shielding. On the contrary, it was observed that concretes with colemanite were more effective in shielding fast neutrons and the fast neutron removal cross-section values increased with increasing colemanite concentration in the concrete. Additionally, compressive strength values (MPa) of concretes were tested using ALFA TESTING (B001-PC) 200 tons capacity device.  相似文献

The vacancy transfer probabilities from K to L shell through radiative decay, η KL, have been deduced for the elements in the range 19 ≤ Z ≤ 58 using K-shell fluorescence yields. The targets were irradiated with γ photons at 59.5 keV from a 75mCi 241Am annular source. The K X-rays from different targets were detected with a high resolution Si(Li) detector. The measurement of vacancy transfer probabilities are least-squared fitted to second-order polynomials to obtain analytical relations that represent these probabilities as a function of atomic number. The obtained results agree with theoretical and fitted values.  相似文献

Biological structures can now be investigated at high resolution by high-pressure X-ray macromolecular crystallography (HPMX). The number of HPMX studies is growing, with applications to polynucleotides, monomeric and multimeric proteins, complex assemblies and even a virus capsid. Investigations of the effects of pressure perturbation have encompassed elastic compression of the native state, study of proteins from extremophiles and trapping of higher-energy conformers that are often of biological interest; measurements of the compressibility of crystals and macromolecules were also performed. HPMX results were an incentive to investigate short and ultra-short wavelengths for standard biocrystallography. On cryocooled lysozyme crystals it was found that the data collection efficiency using 33 keV photons is increased with respect to 18 keV photons. This conclusion was extended from 33 keV down to 6.5 keV by exploiting previously published data. To be fully exploited, the potential of higher-energy photons requires detectors with a good efficiency. Accordingly, a new paradigm for MX beamlines was suggested, using conventional short and ultra-short wavelengths, aiming at the collection of very high accuracy data on crystals under standard conditions or under high pressure. The main elements of such beamlines are outlined.  相似文献

Various upgrades have been completed at the XRD1 beamline at the Brazilian synchrotron light source (LNLS). The upgrades are comprehensive, with changes to both hardware and software, now allowing users of the beamline to conduct X‐ray powder diffraction experiments with faster data acquisition times and improved quality. The main beamline parameters and the results obtained for different standards are presented, showing the beamline ability of performing high‐quality experiments in transmission geometry. XRD1 operates in the 5.5–14 keV range and has a photon flux of 7.8 × 109 photons s?1 (with 100 mA) at 12 keV, which is one of the typical working energies. At 8 keV (the other typical working energy) the photon flux at the sample position is 3.4 × 1010 photons s?1 and the energy resolution ΔE/E = 3 × 10?4.  相似文献

In modern third generation synchrotron sources, undulators have become the principal source of X-rays and today a brilliance close to 1021 photons/sec?mm2?mrad?0.1%BW is routinely attained for photon energies of 10 keV. However, generating brilliant beams of photons with energies of 50 keV and above leads to conflicting choices for the undulator parameters as the following analysis shows.  相似文献

It is shown that the detection of 511 keV photons provides a simple and direct method for relating the total number of suprathermal electrons in a laser-heated plasma to the temperature of the suprathermal electrons. Furthermore, it is shown that this method clearly differentiates between the thermal and suprathermal electron populations in contrast to X-ray methods. An explicit relationship between the number of suprathermal electrons, the suprathermal temperature, and the number of 511 keV photons is derived.  相似文献

A method has been presented for calculation of effective atomic number (Zeff) of composite materials, by using back-scattering of 662?keV gamma photons obtained from a 137Cs mono-energetic radioactive source. The present technique is a non-destructive approach, and is employed to evaluate Zeff of different composite materials, by interacting gamma photons with semi-infinite material in a back-scattering geometry, using a 3?×?3 NaI(Tl) scintillation detector. The present work is undertaken to study the effect of target thickness on intensity distribution of gamma photons which are multiply back-scattered from targets (pure elements) and composites (mixtures of different elements). The intensity of multiply back-scattered events increases with increasing target thickness and finally saturates. The saturation thickness for multiply back-scattered events is used to assign a number (Zeff) for multi-element materials. Response function of the 3?×?3 NaI(Tl) scintillation detector is applied on observed pulse-height distribution to include the contribution of partially absorbed photons. The reduced value of signal-to-noise ratio interprets the increase in multiply back-scattered data of a response corrected spectrum. Data obtained from Monte Carlo simulations and literature also support the present experimental results.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Because of the high radiation dose in applications involving nuclear reactors, medical treatments etc., it is important to reduce the exposure to radiation of areas and workers. In this study, we were examined gamma ray shielding parameters of the newly produced Re-based superalloys. Mass attenuation coefficient (µ/ρ) of the alloys were obtained experimentally at 81, 276, 302, 356, 383 keV photon energies emitted from 133Ba radioactive source using Ultra Ge detector. The experimental results were compared with the values obtained by the WinXCOM program and were found to be in perfect agreement with each other. Additionally, effective atomic number (Zeff) and electron density (Neff) were determined for produced Rhenium (Re) based super alloys in the energy range 1 keV–100?GeV. S5 sample which has maximum Rhenium percentage own the largest µ/ρ and Zeff values. Moreover, by using Geometric Progression (GP) approximation, EABF and EBF were computed for the superalloys depending on the energy and penetration depths. It has been deduced that the values of EABF and EBF are minimum in the medium energy region. EBF and EABF values of the alloys have changed depending on the equivalent atomic number. Among alloy samples under study, S5 superalloy is the best for gamma ray shielding. However, in general, considering the radiation energies used in many applications, all the alloys under study have satisfactory radiation absorption properties.  相似文献

The absolute doubly differential cross-sections (DDCS) for production of the thick-target X-ray bremsstrahlung spectra in collisions of 6.5 keV and 7.5 keV electrons with thick Hf target are measured. The X-ray photons are counted by a Si(Li) detector placed at 90° to the electron beam direction. The bremsstrahlung spectra are corrected for various ‘solid-state effects’ namely, electron energy-loss, electron back-scattering, and photon-attenuation in the target, in addition to the correction for detector’s efficiency. The DDCS values after correction, are compared with the predictions of a most accurate thin-target bremsstrahlung theory [H K Tseng and R H Pratt,Phys. Rev. A3, 100 (1971); Kisselet al, Atomic Data Nucl. Data Tables 28, 381 (1983)]. Also, a dependence of the absolute DDCS on atomic numberZ of the targets (47Ag,79Au and72Hf) at 7.0 keV and 7.5 keV electron energies has been studied. The agreement between experiment and theory is found to be satisfactory within 27% systematic error of measurements. However, an apparent systematic difference between experiment and theory in the region of low-energy photons has been explained qualitatively by considering the fact that the hexagonal atomic structure of Hf offers possibly a greater magnitude of ‘solid-state effects’ in respect of blocking the low-energy bremsstrahlung photons from coming out of the target surface than does the cubic-face centered structure of Ag and Au target in similar conditions of the experiment.  相似文献

Photon mass attenuation coefficients of some thermoluminescent dosimetric (TLD) compounds, such as LiF, CaCO3, CaSO4, CaSO4.2H2O, SrSO4, CdSO4, BaSO4, C4H6BaO4 and 3CdSO4.8H2O were determined at 279.2, 320.07, 514.0, 661.6, 1115.5, 1173.2 and 1332.5 keV in a well-collimated narrow beam good geometry set-up using a high resolution, hyper pure germanium detector. The attenuation coefficient data were then used to compute the effective atomic number and the electron density of TLD compounds. The interpolation of total attenuation cross-sections of photons of energyE in elements of atomic numberZ was performed using the logarithmic regression analysis of the data measured by the authors and reported earlier. The best-fit coefficients so obtained in the photon energy range of 279.2 to 320.07 keV, 514.0 to 661.6 keV and 1115.5 to 1332.5 keV by a piece-wise interpolation method were then used to find the effective atomic number and electron density of the compounds. These values are found to be in agreement with other available published values.  相似文献

Fluorescent dark matter has been suggested as a possible explanation of both the 3.5 keV excess in the diffuse emission of the Perseus Cluster and of the deficit at the same energy in the central active galaxy within that cluster, NGC 1275. In this work we point out that such a dark matter candidate can be searched for at the new X-ray laser facilities that are currently being built and starting to operate around the world. We present one possible experimental set up where the laser is passed through a narrow cylinder lined with lead shielding. Fluorescent dark matter would be excited upon interaction with the laser photons and travel across the lead shielding to decay outside the cylinder, in a region which has been instrumented with X-ray detectors. For an instrumented length of 7 cm at the LCLS-II laser we expect \(\mathcal {O}\)(1–10) such events per week for parameters which explain the astronomical observations.  相似文献

An X‐ray Raman spectrometer for studies of local structures in minerals is discussed. Contrary to widely adopted back‐scattering spectrometers using ≤10 keV X‐rays, a spectrometer utilizing ~20 keV X‐rays and a bent Laue analyzer is proposed. The 20 keV photons penetrate mineral samples much more deeply than 10 keV photons, so that high intensity is obtained owing to an enhancement of the scattering volume. Furthermore, a bent Laue analyzer provides a wide band‐pass and a high reflectivity, leading to a much enhanced integrated intensity. A prototype spectrometer has been constructed and performance tests carried out. The oxygen K‐edge in SiO2 glass and crystal (α‐quartz) has been measured with energy resolutions of 4 eV (EXAFS mode) and 1.3 eV (XANES mode). Unlike methods previously adopted, it is proposed to determine the pre‐edge curve based on a theoretical Compton profile and a Monte Carlo multiple‐scattering simulation before extracting EXAFS features. It is shown that the obtained EXAFS features are reproduced fairly well by a cluster model with a minimal set of fitting parameters. The spectrometer and the data processing proposed here are readily applicable to high‐pressure studies.  相似文献

Elastic scattering cross-sections for Pt, Au and Pb were measured using nearly monoenergetic unpolarized Kα x-ray photons in the energy range 8.63⩽E⩽42.75 keV at an angle of 90°. The experimental results were compared with theoretical elastic scattering cross-sections calculated using relativistic form factors (RFFs), relativistic modified form factors (RMFs), a combination of RFFs, RMFs with angle-independent anomalous scattering factors (ASFs) and relativistic numerical calculations based on the multipole expansion of the second-order S-matrix approach. The experimental results were in reasonable agreement with the S-matrix values and values based on an RMF+ASF approach compared with an RFF+ASF approach. © 1988 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this work, we examined the usefulness of the WCx/Al100?x composites (x?=?10, 20, 50, 80 wt. %) for gamma-ray shielding materials. The mass attenuation coefficient (μ/ρ), effective atomic number (Zeff), electron density (Ne) and energy absorption buildup factor (EABF) and exposure buildup factor (EBF) for WCx/Al100?x composites have been calculated by theoretical approach using XCOM program within the energy range 1?keV–100?GeV, 10 keV–1?GeV, 10 keV–1?GeV and 0.015?MeV–15?MeV, respectively. The results showed that both the values of mass attenuation coefficient and Zeff of the WCx/Al100?x composites tend to increase with the increase of the WC concentration. For the energy region below 3?MeV, the WC80/Al20 composite was found to possess superior gamma-ray shielding effectiveness due to its higher values of both mass attenuation coefficient and effective atomic number, and lower values of both EABF and EBF values. However, for the energy region above 3?MeV, the EBF and EABF values of the WC/Al composites are directly proportional to their Zeff values, leading to the lowest EBF and EABF values of the WC10/Al90 composites.  相似文献

The results of Compton profile measurements, Fermi momentum determinations, and theoretical values obtained from a linear combination of Slater-type orbital (STO) for core electrons in beryllium; carbon and aluminium are presented. In addition, a Thomas-Fermi model is used to estimate the contribution of valence electrons to the Compton profile. Measurements were performed using monoenergetic photons of 59.54 keV provided by a low-intensity Am-241 γ-ray source. Scattered photons were detected at 90° from the beam direction using a p-type coaxial high-purity germanium detector (HPGe). The experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical calculations.  相似文献
