Nonelastic deformation of semicrystalline poly(butylene terephtalate) (PBT) was investigated by calorimetric measurements and strain‐recovery tests. Differential scanning calorimetry on PBT specimens deformed both below and above their glass‐transition temperature (Tg ≈ 50 °C) showed the presence of a broad exothermal peak whose area represents the energy released for the nonelastic strain recovery. This energy became more and more pronounced as the strain level increased, and it decreased as the deformation temperature increased, even if a significant contribution was detected on specimens deformed at temperatures much higher than Tg. For two temperature conditions (21 and 100 °C), strain‐recovery master curves were built showing the following two distinct deformation components: one recoverable with time and another one irreversible, this latter one arising from relatively low levels of strain. The recoverable component can be erased by heating the material at temperatures much higher than its Tg, close to the onset of the melting process. On the other hand, the irreversible strain component does not recover even if the material is brought close to the onset of the crystals melting. The shift factor for the strain‐recovery master curves was compared with the shift factor for the construction of the dynamic storage modulus master curve obtained in the linear viscoelastic regime (small strain). © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The Tg depression and kinetic behavior of stacked polystyrene ultrathin films is investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and compared with the behavior of bulk polystyrene. The fictive temperature (Tf) was measured as a function of cooling rate and as a function of aging time for aging temperatures below the nominal glass transition temperature (Tg). The stacked ultrathin films show enthalpy overshoots in DSC heating scans which are reduced in height but occur over a broader temperature range relative to the bulk response for a given change in fictive temperature. The cooling rate dependence of the limiting fictive temperature, Tf′, is also found to be higher for the stacked ultrathin film samples; the result is that the magnitude of the Tg depression between the ultrathin film sample and the bulk is inversely related to the cooling rate. We also find that the rate of physical aging of the stacked ultrathin films is comparable with the bulk when aging is performed at the same distance from Tg; however, when conducted at the same aging temperature, the ultrathin film samples show accelerated physical aging, that is, a shorter time is required to reach equilibrium for the thin films due to their depressed Tg values. The smaller distance from Tg also results in a reduced logarithmic aging rate for the thin films compared with the bulk, although this is not indicative of longer relaxation times. The DSC heating curves obtained as a function of cooling rate and aging history are modeled using the Tool-Narayanaswamy-Moynihan model of structural recovery; the stacked ultrathin film samples show lower β values than the bulk, consistent with a broader distribution of relaxation times. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Large anisotropic deformation affects the physical state of a polymer glass, where the changes in the state of material are revealed by performing a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) experiment. Previously, the deformation was applied to polymers well below their glass transition temperatures, and it was found that uniaxial compressive loading–unloading resulted in a broad exothermic peak on the DSC trace. Here we report on the effect on the subsequent DSC response of a deformation experiment performed in uniaxial extension on a ductile 50:50 co-polymer poly(BMA-co-MMA) (PBMA/MMA). The deformation of up to 80% strain was applied at Tg − 30°C and Tg − 40°C, that is, closer to Tg than in the previous work. Unlike in the well below Tg deformation case, the DSC trace contains an endothermic peak followed by an exothermic peak. The magnitude of the endothermic peak as well as the asymptotic glassy heat capacity increase with the amount of mechanical work performed during the deformation cycle.  相似文献

Cellulose powder and cellulose pellets obtained by pressing the microcrystalline powder were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), differential thermal analysis (DTA), and thermal gravimetry (TG). The TG method enabled the assessment of water content in the investigated samples. The glass phase transition in cellulose was studied using the DSC method, both in heating and cooling runs, in a wide temperature range from −100 to 180 °C. It is shown that the DSC cooling runs are more suitable for the glass phase transition visualisation than the heating runs. The discrepancy between glass phase transition temperature T g found using DSC and predictions by Kaelbe’s approach are observed for “dry” (7 and 5.3% water content) cellulose. This could be explained by strong interactions between cellulose chains appearing when the water concentration decreases. The T g measurements vs. moisture content may be used for cellulose crystallinity index determination.  相似文献

Dynamic viscoelastic measurements on poly(vinyl chloride)/dioctyl phthalate gels have been carried out in parallel-plate shear mode. Two transitions are observed: the well-known gel-sol transition at temperature Tf, which probably corresponds to the beginning of fusion of crystalities, and a transition, at a temperature below Tf, denoted as Ts and corresponding to phase separation. The sub(gel-sol) Ts temperature is manifested as the transition from the first plateau zone to a second plateau in log G' versus temperature plots. Other techniques like polarizing microscopy and DSC measurements are not adequate for the detection of Ts.  相似文献

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and infrared spectroscopy (IR) were used to monitor the degree of cure of partially cured epoxy resin (Epon 828/MDA) samples. The extent of cure, as determined by residual heat of reaction, concurred with that determined by monitoring the infrared radiation absorbance of the epoxide group near 916 cm?l. The fictive temperature Tf, g was found to increase with the degree of cure, increasing rapidly during cure until reaching a value near the cure temperature Tc of 130°C (approximately 80% cure) where the material vitrified. The greatly reduced reaction rate during the final 20% of cure was not only a consequence of vitrification but, as revealed by infrared spectroscopy, the result of the depletion in the number of reactive epoxide groups. The endothermic peak areas and peak temperatures evident during the DSC scans were used as a measure of the extent of “physical aging” which took place during the cure of this resin, and after, fully cured samples were aged 37°C below their ultimate glass temperature for various periods of time. The rate of physical aging slowed as the temperature increment (Tt,g ? Tc) increased. Although an endothermic peak was evident after only 1 h of cure (Tf, g = 138.3°C), such a peak did not appear until fully cured samples were aged for 16 h or more. Enthalpy data revealed that for partially cured material, the fictive temperature Tf, a, reflecting physical aging, increased with curing time. In contrast, the Tf, a, for fully cured samples decreased with sub-Tg aging time. The characteristic jump in the heat capacity ΔCp which occurred at the Tf, g decreased as curing progressed. This decrease appears to be dependent upon the rotational and vibrational degrees of freedom of the glass. Finally, a graphical method of determining the fictive temperature Tf, a, of partially and fully cured epoxy material from measured endothermic peak areas was developed.  相似文献

Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is the most widely used plastic in beverages packaging. It is also the most recycled plastic in the world. It is estimated that 6 million tons of PET are recycled (rPET) each year worldwide. Recycling of this material by melt processing has been the subject of many studies, in order to limit the degradation processes that lead to a significant decrease in the molecular weight (viscosity). Two key points are highlighted: The former is the presence of impurities like adhesive, glue and Poly Vinyl Chloride etc. The latter is the presence of water. These were therefore the main factors of the degradation of rPET. The impurities can be eliminated by a selective recovery and the moisture by a suitable drying combined with the addition of chain extenders namely Caprolactam (CAP) and/or Trimellitic anhydride (TMA). This combination has proved to be very promising since extruded mixtures (rPET/TMA or CAP) have quite acceptable rheological properties especially in terms of intrinsic viscosity, dynamic viscosity and melt flow index (MFI) at low concentration of chain extender. Rheological and FTIR analysis showed that the degradation of rPET becomes more significant from the second extrusion cycle. Finally, DSC analysis showed that T g were not affected by extrusion cycle number; However, cold crystallization temperature T cc2 were significantly affected by heat treatment. The DSC analysis showed also that from the 2nd extrusion cycle, a conversion of heating crystallization temperature (T c) which appeared during the first heating (1st scan) to a melting temperature (T m1) that appeared during the second heating (3rd scan) occurred due to the change of the decomposition mechanism environment (from oxygen environment to that of nitrogen).  相似文献

A series of chromophore-functionalized polyimide prepolymers with excellent processibility were prepared by a Michael addition reaction of diamine chromophore 2 with structurally different bismaleimide (BMI) monomers. The effects of the BMI moiety's structure and thermal curing condition on glass transition temperature (Tg) and thermal stability of the polyimides were studied by DSC, TGA, and FTIR. Among the five cured polyimides, PI3, bearing a sulfone moiety, exhibited the highest Tg and thermal decomposition temperature (Td). Its corresponding prepolymer, PP3, was selected to evaluate NLO properties in a simultaneously poling and thermal polymerization process. A relatively large poling-order parameter was observed. The second-order nonlinear coefficient, d33, was 25 pm/V at 1064 nm fundamental wavelength. The second harmonic generation signal was almost without decay up to 170°C. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The glass transition (Tg) of thin polystyrene films (ca. 3000 A?) cast on silicon wafers was determined by a new technique. An ellipsometer was used to determine the refractive index and thickness of the polystyrene films. Tg was determined by measuring the temperature dependence of the refractive index. The change in thickness with temperature was used to calculate the linear and bulk thermal expansion coefficients of the material. A significant shift in Tg, possibly due to strains induced in the cooled films, was observed between heating and cooling for polystyrene films. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Cycloolefin copolymers (COCs, which are produced via ethylene/cycloolefin copolymerization) and cycloolefin polymers (COPs, which are synthesized by a rather complicated two-step process via ring-opening metathesis polymerization and subsequent hydrogenation) are commercialized materials used especially widely in optical applications. Although a COP can be used after processing into a film, films made from conventional COCs are too brittle. Optical-grade COCs and COPs are generally known as amorphous polymers. By contrast, here, a quasi-alternating ethylene/norbornene copolymer (norbornene content 56 mol%), prepared from a constrained-geometry Hf complex, shows some melting (Tm) signals in a broad temperature range (150–200°C) in the first heating scan of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) when the samples are prepared by precipitation from a toluene solution. In the second heating scan, only glass transition (Tg) signals are observed at ~140°C with disappearance of Tm signals. The quasi-alternating ethylene/norbornene copolymer has better mechanical properties (greater elongation at break) than random congeners, which do not show any melting signal, though elongation at break is still inferior to that of the COP which shows the melting signal in the first heating scan of DSC. The enhanced mechanical properties of the quasi-alternating ethylene/norbornene copolymer and commercial-grade COP may be ascribed to semicrystallinity observed in the first heating scan.  相似文献

Many semicrystalline polymers undergo a process of aging when they are stored at temperatures higher than their glass-transition temperature (T g). Syndiotactic polypropylene was quenched from the melt to −40 °C, crystallized from the glassy state at 20 or 40 °C and stored at the respective temperature for different aging times up to 7200 h. A significant increase in the tensile modulus and stress at yield and a decrease in strain at yield were observed for both aging temperatures. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) scans of aged material showed an endothermic annealing peak 15–30 °C above the previous aging temperature, the maximum temperature and enthalpic content of which increased with aging time. The position and the shape of the melting peak were not affected by aging. Scans of the storage modulus obtained from dynamic mechanical analyser measurements indicated a softening process starting at about 20 °C above the aging temperature and correlating with the annealing peak detected by DSC. Density measurements and wide-angle X-ray scattering investigations revealed that neither the crystallinity increased significantly nor did the crystal structure change. So the observed property changes induced by aging are attributed to microstructural changes within the amorphous phase. Furthermore, it could be shown by annealing experiments carried out at 60 °C, that aging above T g is, analogous to aging below T g (physical aging), a thermoreversible process. A series of novel mesogen‐jacketed liquid‐crystal polymers, poly[2,5‐bis(4′‐alkoxyphenyl)‐styrene] (P‐n, n = 1–11), were prepared via free‐radical polymerization of newly synthesized monomers, 2,5‐bis(4′‐alkoxyphenyl)styrene (M‐n, n = 1–11). The influence of the alkoxy tail length on the liquid‐crystalline behaviors of the monomers and the polymers was investigated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry, polarized optical microscopy (POM), and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). The monomers with n = 1–4, 9, and 11 were monotropic nematic liquid crystals. All other monomers exhibited enantiotropic nematic properties. Their melting points (Tm's) decreased first as n increased to 6, after which Tm increased slightly at longer spacer lengths. The isotropic–nematic transition temperatures decreased regularly with increasing n values in an odd–even way. The glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) of the polymers first decreased as the tail lengths increased and then leveled off when n ≥ 7. All polymers were thermally stable and entered the mesophase at a temperature above Tg. Upon further heating, no mesophase‐to‐isotropic melt transition was observed before the polymers decomposed. WAXD studies indicated that an irreversible order–order transition for the polymers with short tails (n ≤ 5) and a reversible order–order transition for those with elongated tails (n ≥ 6) occurred at a temperature much higher than Tg. However, such a transition could not be identified by POM and could be detected by DSC only on heating scans for the polymers with long tails (n ≥ 7). © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies show that poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) exhibits three transition regions below its melting point. The effects of annealing on the intensity and temperature of these transitions enable us to locate T < Tg (Tγ) Tg, and Tα at about 130–140. 190–240, and 263–313°K, respectively. Our results argue for a small transition Tg (L) at 190–200°K with a second Tg (U) above 233°K, the temperature of which increases on annealing. The shape of DSC derivative curves reveals that T < Tg and Tα are complex and suggests the possibility of two steps in these processes. In addition, a splitting of Tα is observed every time a multiple melting endotherm appears as a result of annealing. Up to three separate melting endotherms can be observed. One of them is related to the normal primary crystallization process. Its peak temperature increases linearly with the annealing temperature, yielding an extrapolated value for the equilibrium melting temperature T of 347°K as found before.  相似文献

The bulk and shear rheological properties of a symmetric three‐arm star polystyrene were measured using a self‐built pressurizable dilatometer and a commercial rheometer, respectively. The bulk properties investigated include the pressure–volume–temperature behavior, the pressure‐dependent glass transition temperature (Tg), and the viscoelastic bulk modulus and Poisson's ratio. Comparison with data for a linear polystyrene indicates that the star behaves similarly but with slightly higher Tgs at elevated pressures and slightly higher limiting bulk moduli in glass and rubbery states. The Poisson's ratio shows a minimum at short times similar to what is observed for the linear chain. The horizontal shift factors above Tg obtained from reducing the bulk and shear viscoelastic responses are found to have similar temperature dependence when plotted using T ? Tg scaling; in addition, the shift factors also exhibit a similar temperature dependence to linear polystyrene. The retardation spectra for the bulk and shear responses are compared and show that the long time molecular mechanisms available to the shear response are unavailable to the bulk. At short times, the two spectra have similar slopes, but the short‐time retardation spectrum for the shear response is significantly higher than that for the bulk, a finding that is, as yet, unexplained. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary The present paper reports the Differential Scanning Calorimetric (DSC) study of some Ag doped Se-Te chalcogenide glasses. DSC runs were taken at different heating rates. Well-defined endothermic and exothermic peaks were obtained at glass transition and crystallization temperatures. The variation of glass transition temperature Tgwith Ag concentration has been studied. It has been found that Tgdecreases with increase in Ag concentration. The heating rate dependence of Tgis used to evaluate the activation energy of glass transition (DEt). The value of<span style='font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"SymbolProp BT";mso-bidi-font-family:"SymbolProp BT"'>DEthas been found to increase with increase in Ag concentration followed by nearly constant value at higher concentrations of Ag.  相似文献

An exotherm, observed in differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) scans of amorphous food materials above their glass transition temperature,T g, may occur due to sugar crystallization, nonenzymatic browning, or both. In the present study, this exothermal phenomenon in initially anhydrous skim milk and lactose-hydrolyzed skim milk was considered to occur due to browning during isothermal holding at various temperatures above the initialT g. The nonenzymatic, Maillard browning reaction produces water that in amorphous foods, may plasticize the material and reduceT g. The assumption was that quantification of formation of water from theT g depression, which should not be observed as a result of crystallization under anhydrous conditions, can be used to determine kinetics of the nonenzymatic browning reaction. The formation of water was found to be substantial, and the amount formed could be quantified from theT g measured after isothermal treatment at various temperatures using DSC. The rate of water formation followed zero-order kinetics, and its temperature dependence well aboveT g was Arrhenius-type. Although water plasticization of the material occurred during the reaction, and there was a dynamic change in the temperature differenceTT g, the browning reaction was probably diffusioncontrolled in anhydrous skim milk in the vicinity of theT g of lactose. This could be observed from a significant increase in activation energy. The kinetics and temperature dependence of the Maillard reaction in skim milk and lactose-hydrolyzed skim milk were of similar type well above the initialT g. The difference in temperature dependence in theT g region of lactose, but above that of lactose-hydrolyzed skim milk, became significant, as the rate in skim milk, but not in lactose-hydrolyzed skim milk, became diffusion-controlled. The results showed that rates of diffusion-controlled reactions may follow the Williams-Landel-Ferry (WLF) equation, as kinetic restrictions become apparent within amorphous materials in reactions exhibiting high rates at the same temperature under non-diffusion-controlled conditions.  相似文献

The glass transition behavior in athermal blends of poly(α‐methyl styrene) (PaMS) and its hexamer is investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results, along with previous data on similar blends of PaMS/pentamer, are analyzed in the context of the Lodge–McLeish self‐concentration model. A methodology is described to partition the calorimetric transition to obtain effective Tgs for each component of the blend. The dependences of these effective Tgs on overall blend composition are described by the Lodge–McLeish model, although the self‐concentration effect is less than expected based on the Kuhn length. The length scales of the cooperatively rearranging regions for the two components in the blends are also calculated adapting Donth's fluctuation model to the partitioned DSC transitions and are found to be similar for the two components and show a slight decrease at intermediate concentrations. The kinetics associated with the glass temperature, Tg, is examined by studying the cooling rate dependence of Tg for the pure components and the blends, as well as by examining the enthalpy overshoots in the heating DSC scans. It is observed that the cooling rate dependence of Tg in PaMS/hexamer blends at intermediate concentrations is similar to that of the hexamer, indicating that the kinetics of the glass transition for blends is dominated by the high mobility oligomeric component. Moreover, compared to the pure materials, the PaMS/hexamer blends exhibit a considerably depressed enthalpy overshoot, presumably resulting from their broader relaxation time distribution. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Organic–inorganic polymer hybrid films of epoxy polymer were prepared, using Cobaltous sulfate heptahydrate (CoSO4.7H2O) as a filler component, by physical blending method. UV–Vis optical absorption spectra were analyzed to determine optical band gaps (Eg) of the hybrid material. FTIR studies revealed the interaction of inorganic component with molecules of the polymer matrix. Glass transition temperature (Tg) and degradation temperature were determined by DSC. TG analysis showed the improvement in thermal stability of prepared hybrid films. XRD patterns revealed the amorphous nature of the pure epoxy polymer. Additional sharp peaks were seen for higher filler levels (FLs), indicating self formed nanostructures in the material, which was also evident from SEM analysis.  相似文献

The isothermal time–temperature-transformation (TTT) cure diagram is developed in this article to investigate the effect of thermoplastic toughening agent on glass transition temperature (T g) and cure kinetics of an epoxy carbon fiber prepreg, Cycom 977-2 unidirectional (UD) tape. The glass transition temperature was measured using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) over a wide range of isothermal cure temperatures from 140 to 200 °C. Times to gelation and vitrification were measured using shear rheometry. The glass transition temperature master curve was obtained from the experimental data and the corresponding shift factors were used to calculate the activation energy. The kinetic rate model was utilized to construct iso-T g contours using the calculated activation energy. It was observed that the iso-T g contours did not follow the behavior of the neat epoxy resin, since they deviated from the gel time curve. This deviation was believed to be the effect of the thermoplastic toughening agent. The behavior of the neat epoxy resin in 977-2 was shown by constructing the iso-T g contours using the activation energy obtained from gel time modeling.  相似文献
