In ionic liquid crystals, the orthogonal smectic A phase is the most common phase whereas the tilted smectic C phase is rather rare. We present a new study with five novel ionic liquid crystals exhibiting both a smectic A as well as the rare smectic C phase. Two of them have a phenylpyrimidine core whereas the other three are imidazolium azobenzenes. Their phase sequences and tilt angles were studied by polarizing microscopy and their temperature‐dependent layer spacing as well as their translational and orientational order parameters were studied by X‐ray diffraction. The X‐ray tilt angles derived from X‐ray studies of the layer contraction and the optically measured tilt angles of the five ionic liquid crystals were compared to obtain their de Vries character. Four of our five mesogens turned out to show de Vries‐like behavior with a layer shrinkage that is far less than that expected for conventional materials. These materials can thus be considered as the first de Vries‐type materials among ionic liquid crystals.  相似文献

We report preliminary results of optical and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments on the smectic A*-smectic C* transition in two ferroelectric liquid crystalline polysiloxanes. Although the optical tilt angle in the SmC* phases reaches values up to 30°, temperature-dependent SAXS measurements clearly reveal that the smectic layer spacing is basically conserved during the A*-C* transition as well as in the subsequent C* phase. Connected with the A*-C* transition we further observed a significant increase in birefringence, hence reflecting an increase of orientational order. The practical absence of layer shrinkage and the enhanced orientational ordering are consistent with the de Vries diffuse cone model of smectic A-smectic C transitions.  相似文献

The synthesis and mesomorphic behaviour of a series of wedge-shaped liquid crystals and some reference compounds are reported. These unusual liquid crystals possess smectic C, smectic A and nematic phases. These new wedge-shaped materials with a high degree of shape anisotropy and a large dipole moment can be used to induce an increase in the flexoelectric effects of nematic guest-host mixtures as dopants at low concentrations.  相似文献

This paper compares smectic phases formed from LC‐homo‐ and LC‐co‐polysiloxanes. In the homopolysiloxane, each repeating unit of the polymer chain is substituted with a mesogen, whereas in the copolysiloxanes mesogenic repeating units are separated by dimethylsiloxane units. Despite a rather similiar phase sequence of the homo‐ and co‐polysiloxanes—higher ordered smectic, smectic C* (SmC*), smectic A (SmA) and isotropic—the nature of their phases differs strongly. For the copolymers the phase transition SmC* to SmA is second order and of the ‘de Vries’ type with a very small thickness change of the smectic layers. Inside the SmA phase, however, the smectic thickness decreases strongly on approaching the isotropic phase. For the homopolymer the phase transition SmC* to SmA is first order with a significant thickness change, indicating that this phase is not of the ‘de Vries’ type. This difference in the nature of the smectic phases is probably a consequence of microphase separation in the copolymer, which facilitates a loss of the tilt angle correlation between different smectic layers. This has consequences for the mechanical properties of LC‐elastomers formed from homo‐ and co‐polymers. For the elastomers from homopolymers the smectic layer compression seems to be rather high, while it seems to be rather small for the copolymers.  相似文献

A new series of materials with a chiral fragment derived from lactic acid and a methoxy group as lateral substituent in different positions of the molecular core was synthesised and investigated. Derivatives with ester or ether linkages of the non‐chiral chain were also studied. Depending on the molecular structure, cholesteric, twist grain boundary smectic A (TGBA*), chiral smectic A (SmA*) or chiral smectic C (SmC*) phases were detected. In derivatives with the ester linkage and a methoxy group at the nearest and the next nearest phenyl ring to the non‐chiral chain these phases completely disappear. On the other hand, a methoxy group on the phenyl ring close to the chiral chain provides a compound with low layer shrinkage at the SmA*–SmC* phase transition (“de Vries” behaviour). The temperature dependence of the spontaneous polarisation, the tilt angle, the layer spacing as well as the complex permittivity were studied and the results discussed in terms of molecular structure.  相似文献

We study the orientation and order parameter of a liquid crystalline random side chain copolymer by 13C NMR. Evidence has previously been presented that this material forms a de Vries smectic A phase. The NMR data show that the molecular tilt angle in the smectic A phase is very small or zero and the smectic A–smectic C* transition is attributed predominantly to a change of the molecular tilt rather than azimuthal ordering. We discuss the NMR results in the context of earlier X‐ray and elastic characterizations of structurally similar materials.  相似文献

Two series of new liquid crystalline lactic acid derivatives with a terminal ester group have been synthesised. The effect of this ester unit and the length of its alkyl chain on the mesomorphic and dielectric properties of the compounds exhibiting a broad temperature range of chiral smectic phases have been studied. We found that the mesomorphic behaviour and phase transition temperatures are strongly affected by the molecular architecture. Depending on the alkyl chain length in the terminal ester unit, the studied materials exhibited paraelectric smectic A*, ferroelectric tilted smectic C* and antiferroelectric smectic CA* phases over a broad temperature range. The physical properties of the compounds have been studied by optical polarising microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, electro-optic measurements, small-angle X-ray scattering and dielectric spectroscopy. Furthermore, the homologues with short terminal alkyl chains showed a very small layer shrinkage at the transition from the orthogonal SmA* to the tilted SmC* phase, which is a characteristic feature of ‘de Vries-type’ behaviour.  相似文献

New functional multicomponent ferroelectric liquid crystalline mixtures have been designed while searching smart self-assembling materials with submicrometre periodicity of the helical structure responding definite demands for application in electro-optic devices and photonics that exploit the deformed helix ferroelectric effect. The resulting designed mixtures possess the paraelectric smectic A* and the tilted ferroelectric smectic C* phases over a very broad temperature range down below the room temperature. The mesomorphic, electro-optic and dielectric properties have been studied and discussed. The presence of a very stable enantiotropic ferroelectric smectic phase exhibiting almost temperature independent helical pitch within 150–250 nm range and reasonably high values of the tilt angle might allow these mixtures to be applicable for practical purposes.  相似文献

We have investigated the orthoconic antiferroelectric liquid crystal mixture W107 by means of optical, X-ray and calorimetry measurements in order to assess the origin of the unusally high tilt angle between the optic axis and the smectic layer normal in this material. The optical birefringence increases strongly below the transition to the tilted phases, showing that the onset of tilt is coupled with a considerable increase in orientational order. The layer spacing in the smectic A* (SmA*) phase is notably smaller than the extended length of the molecules constituting the mixture, and the shrinkage in smectic C* (SmC*) and smectic Ca* (SmCa*) is much less than the optical tilt angle would predict. These observations indicate that the tilting transition in W107 to a large extent follows the asymmetric de Vries diffuse cone model. The molecules are on average considerably tilted with respect to the layer normal already in the SmA* phase but the tilting directions are there randomly distributed, giving the phase its uniaxial characteristics. At the transition to the SmC* phase, the distribution is biased such that the molecular tilt already present in SmA* now gives a contribution to the macroscopic tilt angle. In addition, there is a certain increase of the average tilt angle, leading to a slightly smaller layer thickness in the tilted phases. Analysis of the wide angle scattering data show that the molecular tilt in SmCa* is about 20° larger than in SmA*. The large optical tilt (45°) in the SmCa* phase thus results from a combination of an increased average molecule tilt and a biasing of tilt direction fluctuations.  相似文献

Two series of binary mixtures composed of bent shaped and rod like molecules are reported. The first star shaped bent core molecules were synthesized and used as a component of binary mixtures. The chiral rod like compounds having commensurable length with the arms of the bent core compounds have been chosen for these mixtures. The resulted compositions show various thermotropic liquid crystalline phases that are characteristic to both types of liquid crystalline materials. In case of mixing the rod like molecules to the bent core compound the B2, B7 and induced B1 phases have been observed. While using the star-shaped bent core and chiral rod like compounds in mixture, the paraelectric smectic A, ferroelectric smectic C* and orthogonal hexatic smectic B phases were preferred. The appearing mesophases were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction methods.  相似文献

The smectic layer spacing of two homologous series of ferroelectric liquid crystal compounds was characterized by small-angle x-ray diffraction and different degrees of smectic layer shrinkage on cooling from the SmA* into the SmC* phase were observed. The smectic A*-smectic C* phase transition was further studied by measuring the thermal and electric field effects on the optical tilt angle and the electric polarization. With decreasing length of the alkyl terminal chain the phase transition changes from tricritical exhibiting high layer shrinkage to a pure second-order transition with almost no layer shrinkage. This is explained by the increased one-dimensional translational order of the smectic layers, which seems to promote the "de Vries"-type [Mol. Cryst. Liq. Cryst. 41, 27 (1977)] smectic A*-C* phase transition with no or little layer shrinkage.  相似文献

In a large class of smectic mixtures prepared at our University, the phase transition between chiral ferroelectric smectic C (SmC*) and chiral antiferroelectric smectic C (SmCA*) phases can be observed on cooling. Under bias field the temperature of the phase transition SmC*?SmCA* decreases (ca. 100°C in the investigated mixture). The transition is called: unwound SmC*?twisted SmCA* phase transition. The Goldstone mode in SmC* phase is reduced by a direct current field while two modes (PH and PL) in the SmCA* phase are amplified. The amplitude of the fast X mode observed in the SmCA* phase is reduced. The aim of this paper is to show how parameters of the modes in SmCA* phase (calculated from Cole–Cole model) change with bias voltage—when twisted structure in SmCA* phase is gradually unwound. The character of the modes observed in SmCA* is discussed. A new effect is shown: a high value of dielectric loss is detected in the unwound SmC* phase, which is very close to SmCA*.  相似文献

Two binary mixtures of polar liquid crystal materials were previously reported to exhibit three incommensurate smectic A phases predicted for such materials on the basis of phenomenological theory. Results of our recent high-resolution X-ray scattering experiments show that no incommensurate phases exist in the two systems. Wide coexistence regions are found at first order transitions between various frustrated smectic phases of these mixtures. These regions were previously identified as the incommensurate smectic A phases. The phase diagrams of the two systems determined with high-resolution X-ray technique are shown to be in excellent agreement with Baroisa-Prost-Lubensky theory.  相似文献

An external electric field applied across a planar-aligned cell in Smectic A* phase of de Vries smectic liquid crystal induces director redistribution over a cone, resulting in a substantial increase in the birefringence and the apparent optical tilt angle. Such an electro-optic response is modelled by Shen et al. [Y. Shen et al., Phys. Rev. E 88, 062504 (2013)], who modified their previous hollow cone with a diffuse cone model by introducing the molecular distribution function limited over a range of tilt angles, that lie in between θmin and θmax. The limits in these two tilt angles are assumed to be temperature independent though the tilt angle in between the two values can be temperature dependent. However, the high resolution measurements of birefringence and the layer thickness indicate the presence of temperature dependent diffuse cone angle in SmA* phase.. In the proposed model, we replace θmin by θT, a temperature dependent fitting parameter and the change shows that a better fit of the experimental data to the model is obtained. We determine the temperature dependence of θmin and show that this angle increases as SmA* to SmC* phase transition temperature is approached.  相似文献

A new series of non-symmetric chiral isoflavone-based liquid crystalline dimers, α-(2-methylbutyl-4′-(4″-phenyloxy)benzoate)-ω-(3-(4′-decyloxyphenyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one-7-oxy)alkanes, with 3–12 carbon atoms in the alkyloxy spacer, have been synthesised. A pronounced odd–even effect for the phase transition temperatures upon varying the spacer length was observed. The short dimers exhibited monolayer smectic A (SmA) and smectic C (SmC*) phases while for longer homologues a chiral nematic (N*) phase was found. The temperature range of the nematic phase was broadened with elongation of the alkyl spacer. Stabilisation of the nematic phase resulted from competition between the monolayer and intercalated smectic structures. The SmA–SmC* phase transition was second order for all studied compounds with a cross over to the de Vries type behaviour for the shortest homologue.  相似文献

Novel liquid crystals containing a siloxy chain as an end tail group instead of an alkyl chain were synthesized. The substitution effects were studied for ferroelectric liquid crystal materials. It was found that the temperature range for the chiral smectic C phase was reduced and shifted to lower temperature in comparison with the analogous alkyl chain derivatives. The crystallinity of the siloxy chain derivatives decreased and cholesteric phases were not observed. The influence of siloxy chains on ferroelectric liquid crystal properties, especially spontaneous polarizations and tilt angles, also greatly depended upon the mesogenic group structure. The X-ray diffraction results showed that the end tail group occupied a larger thickness in the chiral smectic C layer for the siloxy chain derivative than that for the alkyl chain derivative.  相似文献
