In order to fabricate efficient and superior performance liquid crystal (LC) devices, the physical parameters of the LC mesogens can be duly altered by incorporating non-mesogenic materials like quantum dots (QDs), graphene and polymers. In the present work, the effect of adding core/shell QDs in two ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs), along with the change in their physical properties, has been investigated. A small concentration of QDs is dispersed into the two FLCs and temperature variations of vital parameters like spontaneous polarisation (Ps), rotational viscosity, response time, relative permittivity and relaxation strength have been measured for both the FLC materials. The contrast ratio, UV–near visible absorbance as well as photoluminescence (PL) of both the mesogens have also been determined and compared. A faster electro-optical response and the induced phenomenon of PL with a temperature-dependent low-frequency relaxation mode have been observed in Felix 17/100 after the addition of QDs. The present study also provides valuable information about the interaction between QDs and the two FLC systems depending upon polarisation–field (P–E) coupling. The same dopant can interact with FLCs in dissimilar fashion if the intrinsic properties of both the FLCs are different thereby producing different modifications in their respective physical parameters.  相似文献

Cadmium selenide quantum dot (CdSe QD) has been used as a dopant in ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) 2-methylbutyl 4-(4-decyloxybenzylideneamino) cinnamate (DOBAMBC). Effect of CdSe QD in DOBAMBC on its different electro-optical (E-O) properties has been studied in the SmC* phase. The optical micrographs recorded for the pure and composite material are showing good dispersion of QDs in the FLC matrix. Micrographs of unaligned sample cell revealed that CdSe QDs induce homeotropic alignment of FLC molecules. An appreciable change in the value of E-O parameters like tilt angle, spontaneous polarisation and response time with shifting of SmA–SmC* phase transition temperature has been observed for CdSe QD–DOBAMBC composite. The observed properties of composite system have been discussed on the basis of surface properties of QDs in FLC system.  相似文献

The present work concerns with the investigation of the effect of dispersion of Silica (SiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) in host ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) KCFLC10S on the dielectric and electro-optical properties and ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) absorption spectra of the pristine and dispersed systems. We have found that the dispersion of SiO2 NPs in the host FLC strongly influences the various properties of dispersed systems. No evidence of aggregates and clumps in the dispersed system has been observed. Due to SiO2 NPs dispersion, a rapid decrease in dielectric permittivity ε’, increase in conductivity σ with frequency, increase in spontaneous polarisation Ps and decrease in switching time with bias voltage have been observed. Based on the absorption spectra, we have also made an attempt to link the electro-optical and dielectric response with the mechanism of FLC–NPs interactions.  相似文献

In the present study, ferromagnetic nickel nanoparticles (NiNPs) of size (~20 nm, 40 nm) into ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) mixture has been dispersed and investigated. Effect of size of NiNPs on the electro-optic, dielectric and optical properties of FLC mixture have been studied and discussed. A minor improvement in spontaneous polarisation, rotational viscosity and faster response time in NiNPs-FLC samples than pure FLC is noticed. Goldstone mode of relaxation frequency ~100 Hz is detected in all samples and follow a Debye type relaxation behaviour. In addition, it is observed that size of NiNPs does not have any remarkable effect on relaxation frequency and dielectric strength. A single absorption peak at 363, 362 Hz is also noticed in pure FLC and NiNPs-FLC samples.  相似文献

The electro-optical and dielectric responses of the fullerenes C60-doped ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) nanocolloids are reported. Order parameter and phase transition temperature remain invariant as a function of varying dopant concentration (0.10 wt% to 0.50 wt%). Faster switching response of nanocolloids comparing to that of the non-doped FLC is manifested by increase in the localised electric field (around 76% increment for 0.50 wt%), while reduction in the spontaneous polarisation could be the result of anti-parallel correlation amid dopant and FLC dipoles. Decrease in dielectric constant, absorption strength, dielectric strength and rotational viscosity of FLC nanocolloids than that of non-doped FLC is the other consequence of C60 doping. Goldstone-mode relaxation frequency is found to be increased with increasing doping concentration of C60 in FLC.  相似文献

The impact of single-molecule magnet (SMM), Mn12-acetate, on the dielectric properties of ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) has been investigated by dielectric spectroscopy and electro-optical techniques in a dual electrode sample cell (DESC). The temperature-dependent dielectric studies on Mn12-acetate/FLC composite have revealed the enhancement in the ferroelectric (smectic C*) to paraelectric (smectic A*) phase transition temperature by 3.5°C. The relaxation process corresponding to Goldstone mode in the ferroelectric phase of the composite is found to be slower compared to pure FLC sample. The electrical response for an input triangular wave shows the existence of one extra polarisation peak in Mn12-acetate/FLC composite which is ascribed to the induced dipole moment in Mn12-acetate molecule. The electro-optical texture of Mn12-acetate/FLC composite revealed that the incorporation of SMM in FLC significantly improve the memory effect.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Here, we present the effect of copper (II) oxide nanoparticles (nCuO) on dielectric and electro-optical parameters of a newly prepared ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) mixture, namely W302. The FLC mixture, comprising of pyrimidine compounds, was characterised through dielectric spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarising optical microscopy (POM) and other electro-optical methods. The material parameters such as spontaneous polarisation, rotational viscosity, response time and tilt angle of W302 were found to be 14 nC/cm2, 240 mPa.s, 150 µs and 28?, respectively. The phase transition temperatures of W302 were observed through DSC and further confirmed by the dependence of dielectric loss factor in homogeneously aligned FLC sample with temperature. We also demonstrate the observance of a low-frequency dielectric relaxation mode due to the unwinding of the helix, called as partially unwound helical mode (p-UHM) along with Goldstone mode. The behaviour of p-UHM has been systematically studied with temperature and applied bias field. Further, dispersion of nCuO into host W302 has shown a significant increase in dielectric permittivity. Also, the p-UHM relaxation peak in the dielectric regime has disappeared with the incorporation of nCuO. These studies would be useful to fabricate better electro-optical devices for display, switching and beam steering applications. The formulation and characterization of a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) mixture W302 composed of pyrimidine compounds is presented. Then, we observed the effect of copper (II) oxide nanoparticles (nCuO) on dielectric and electro-optical parameters of a newly prepared and characterized FLC mixture.  相似文献

In this article, a newly synthesised ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) material, namely LAHS 22, has been characterised. The characterisation of the FLC material has been performed using dielectric relaxation spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and polarisation optical microscopy. We observed an enhancement in the dielectric and electro-optical properties of the FLC material by incorporating gold nanoparticles (GNPs)-decorated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The GNPs-decorated MWCNTs cause an increment in dielectric dispersion (up to kHz), absorption, spontaneous polarisation and rotational viscosity of the FLC material. The pure and GNPs-decorated MWCNTs doped FLC cells were analysed by means of various dielectric spectroscopic and optical measurements. The observed enhancement in the dielectric and electro-optical properties of the FLC material has also been studied with concentration of GNPs-decorated MWCNTs in FLC material. The GNPs-decorated MWCNTs/FLC composites are not only of fundamental importance, but also useful materials for device applications such as liquid crystal displays and memory devices.  相似文献

The behaviour of dielectric relaxation process has been investigated in four ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) materials having different spontaneous polarisation (Ps) values. Ps effect on the permittivity in four different FLCs has been carried out in highly anchored sample cells around ~8 μm thick. It has been found that the main contribution to the dielectric permittivity in chiral Smectic C (SmC*) phase is due to Goldstone mode (GM) and partially unwound helical mode (p-UHM). In higher PS value FLC materials, the p-UHM process is found to dominate the dielectric properties. It has also been observed that p-UHM process is highly dependent on the probing ac voltage and temperature, whereas GM is found to be weakly dependent of probing voltage and temperature in SmC* phase of all the studied FLC materials. The influential contribution of p-UHM has exhibited the dielectric properties in its intrinsic frequency range making the materials suitable for futuristic display and photonics devices.  相似文献

Rod-shaped 5 wt.% copper-doped ZnO (ZnO:Cu2+) ferromagnetic nanoparticles (NPs), prepared by hydrothermal method, were dispersed in ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) named Felix 17/100. The effect of ferromagnetic NPs on the physical properties of FLC material (Felix 17/100) has been investigated by dielectric, electro-optical and polarising optical microscopic methods. A noteworthy time-dependent memory has been observed in the NPs-dispersed FLC composite attributed to the coupling of magnetic field associated to NPs with the director orientation of FLC. Improvement in spontaneous polarisation and dielectric susceptibility of FLC material has been ensued with the addition of ferromagnetic NPs. Faster electro-optic response, at lower applied voltage, has also been observed in NPs-dispersed FLC composite. These changes are accredited to the magneto-electric dipolar coupling existing due to the interactions between magnetic-dipole and electric-dipole moments of magnetic NPs and FLC material, respectively. The formation of periodic domains capable to show memory effect has been observed in composite. The observed time-dependent memory was confirmed by dielectric and electro-optical methods. FLC material enriched with the properties of ferromagnetic NPs can be utilised in advanced multifunctional optical devices, time-dependent memory-based security devices and computational purposes.  相似文献

We report the enhancement in the molecular ordering of ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) doped with CdSe/ZnSe graded core/shell (CZ) quantum dots (QDs) by using optical methods. Significant decrease in operating voltage and enhancement in optical brightness are assigned to the large primary order parameter (θ) and hence anchoring of FLC molecules by CZ QDs. The enhancement in photoluminescence is conjectured to be due to an increase in molecular alignment yielding higher absorption which is confirmed by excitation spectra. These observations would definitely offer a promising tool to get superior core/shell QD incorporated FLC-based display devices.  相似文献

In the present study, magnetic nanoparticles (NP, nickel ferrite) in different concentrations into ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) mixture have been prepared and studied. The effect of nickel ferrite concentration on the electro-optic, dielectric and optical properties of FLC mixture has been studied and discussed. An improvement in spontaneous polarization, response time in nickel ferrite-FLC-doped samples compared to FLC is observed and explained on the basis of dipole moment and anchoring phenomena. The Goldstone mode (GM) is detected in all samples and follows a Debye-type relaxation behaviour. A twofold increase in relaxation frequency for the doped sample rather than the pure sample has been observed. The band gap was found more or less independent of doping concentration. The activation energy (Ea) also decreases on increasing the doping amount.  相似文献

A new series of ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) has been designed for active matrix displays based upon the chiral smectic C phase. The FLCs have been derived from optically active fluorinated alkanols and a laterally fluoro substituted biphenylyl-1,3-dioxan core. Their physical properties such as spontaneous polarization, current response time, and tilt angle have been determined. The FLC derived from 2-fluoro-octanol showed a very short current response time of 10μs at T Sm*-N* - T= 10°C, while another FLC with the same core derived from 5-fluoro-octanol gave a value of 150μs.  相似文献

In the present investigation, the optical property of the nematic sample p-methoxybenzylidene p-decylaniline, dispersed with SiO2 quantum dot (QD), has been reported. Enhanced luminescence has been observed from nematic-QD composites. Surface plasmonic effect along with QD exciton has been highlighted to discuss the observed intensification in photoluminescence. The intensified photoemission from the nematic composites can also be inferred from improved orientational behaviour of the liquid crystal molecules due to dispersion of QDs. Variation in the intensity of photoabsorption can be harnessed for development of luminescent display devices and optical parameter-driven scientific applications.  相似文献

Nanocolloids consisting of a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) doped with different concentrations (0.10 and 0.50 wt.%) of surface treated gold nanoparticles (GNPs) differing in size (1.77, 5.5 nm) are prepared and characterised. The effects of doping on the clearing temperatures as well as electro-optic and dielectric parameters of a FLC mixture are presented. The clearing temperatures remain invariant with doping. A remarkable increase in the spontaneous polarisation is noticed due to the addition of the GNPs with chiral monolayer capping. Tilt angle and switching time, at least in their tendency, become slightly reduced and increased, respectively. Depending on the size of the nanoparticles, surface plasmon resonance is observed to be slightly increased by increasing the surface. In addition, a small change in localised electric field is found upon doping. The increase in the dielectric permittivity and the dielectric strength is observed and attributed to the parallel coupling between the dipoles of functionalised GNPs, induced by external electric field, and the vector of the spontaneous polarisation of the FLC matrix. A decrease in relaxation frequency is observed. A substantial increment of one order in the dc conductivity is also observed for the nanocolloids.  相似文献

The present study is based on effect of dispersing Cd1?xZnxS/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (QDs) on the memory behaviour of nematic liquid crystal 2020 with the variation of dopant concentration and applied voltage. Around 26% and 45% memory storage in QDs dispersed nematic matrix (MIX 1 and MIX 2) has been the core finding. The presence of ionic charges at low-frequency regime along with their reduction in QDs dispersed nematic matrix has been confirmed from tan δ curve. Pure nematic LC as well as nematic/QD mixtures depict volatile memory effect that depends upon concentration of QDs. The existence of memory due to storage of charge on QDs has been further confirmed from the dielectric, polarising optical micrographs and electro optical study under the influence of bias voltage. The observation of memory effect is attributed to the ion capturing and ion releasing phenomenon. The dispersion of QDs in nematic material plays an important role to enhance memory parameter by capturing and releasing the ionic charges under the application of bias voltage which has been confirmed from capacitance-voltage curve.  相似文献

We report on fast-switching and high-efficient optical beam steering based on a polymerisable liquid crystal polarisation grating (PG) in combination with ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) phase shutter. The PG was fabricated in a convenient single-step holographic exposure process using photo-sensitive azo-dye material as alignment layer for liquid crystal (LC) director. A binary electro-optical FLC was employed for circular polarisation selection, which enables the electro-tunable steering of the combined system. The efficiency of 95.7% with 82 μs switching time is obtained for 1064 nm laser. This work provides a versatile candidate for non-mechanical beam steering devices.  相似文献

A chiral ferroelectric smectic C* liquid crystal (FLC) with the helix pitch p 0?=?330 nm was developed to avoid any scattering of visible light when the helix is not unwound over a certain limit. Planar cells with different FLC layer thickness (16 and 44 μm) have been assembled with helix axis parallel to the glass plates and aligned along the rubbing direction. The ellipticity of the light passing through the cells vs. the electric field was investigated, and a method for evaluating the electrically controlled birefringence via ellipticity measurements has been established. We have found that the FLC cell is an optical retardation layer driven by the electric field, the effective birefringence being proportional to the square electric field. The physical origin of the electrically controlled phase shift of the light passing through the FLC layer has been analysed.  相似文献

Formation of solid solution has been explored in the valence compensated perovskite oxide system Sr1−xLaxTi1−xFexO3 (x ≤ 0.50). XRD studies indicate the formation of solid solution for the whole range investigated. All the compositions synthesised have cubic structure similar to undoped SrTiO3. Study of dielectric behaviour of these materials show that orientational polarisation and space charge polarisation contribute significantly to it. The concentration, excitation photon wavelength, and polarisation dependent fluorescence of quantum dot (QD)–liquid crystal (LC) mixtures has been studied at room temperature using high-resolution, steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy. The fluorescence of QD–LC mixture increases with increasing QD’s concentration but the spectral red shift of ~10 nm relative to the stock QD–Toluene solution remains independent of concentration. In vertical switching (VS) cells, an external electric field changes the LC alignment direction and enhances the apparent fluorescence intensity. The apparent fluorescence anisotropy compared to that at zero applied electric field monotonically increases up to ~27% at an applied electric field of 0.6 V/µm. These results are consistent with the formation of disc-like assemblages of QDs oriented on planes perpendicular to the director of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC). These findings have important utility in polarisation sensitive photonic devices.  相似文献
