A homologous series of new chiral liquid crystal compounds, M6BnB (n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18), with varying length of n-alkoxy chains at one end, was formed by covalently linking a chiral (?)-menthyl with biphenyl-benzoate via adipoyloxy spacer group. A combination of analysis methods such as Fourier transform infrared, 1H NMR spectra, differential scanning calorimetry, polarised optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction was carried out to systematically investigate their phase structures and phase transition behaviours. The length of the flexible terminal alkoxy group has a profound influence on the clearing points (Tiso) and Tiso decrease with the increase of alkoxy chain (n). In addition, increasing the length of the terminal alkoxy group tends to narrow the temperature range of the N* phase and favour the development of chiral smectic C phase.  相似文献

Chiral non-symmetric dimeric liquid crystals consisting of a cholesteryl ester moiety as chiral entity and a biphenyl aromatic core, interconnected through n-butyl (C4) or n-pentyl (C5) parity alkylene spacers, have been synthesized and investigated for their liquid crystalline properties. All the dimers exhibit enantiotropic mesophases. The first member of the dimers having the C4 central spacer exhibit only the chiral nematic (N*) mesophase, while the higher homologues also show smectic A (SmA) and twist grain boundary (TGB) mesophases. The dimers of the other series containing the C5 central spacer also have stable SmA, TGB and N* mesophases, except for the first which does not show the TGB phase. Both series of compounds show a weak odd-even effect with terminal alkyl chain substitution, while the spacer length has a marked influence on the phase transition temperatures.  相似文献

A new series of symmetrical S-shaped oligomers 4,4′-bis[(5-cholesteryloxycarbonylpentyl alkoxy)hexyloxy]biphenyl consisting of outer spacers –(COCH2)n– as well as an inner spacer –(CH2)6– has been synthesised. Their liquid crystalline properties and phase transition temperatures with associated enthalpy changes are recorded. The outer spacers are varied from n = 5–8 to 10 and 11. The compounds with even spacer exhibit enantiotropic phase and oligomers with odd parity display monotropic phase. The oligomers with odd membered n = 5, 7 and 11 exhibit N* and SmC* phases upon cooling. Whilst upon heating, the homologues with even-numbered member n = 6 and 10 show N* phase and upon cooling, both compounds exhibit N* and SmC* phases. However, oligomer with outer spacer n = 8 displays enantiotropic N* and SmC* phases. The temperature range of N* phase for even and odd membered decreased as the outer spacers are increased. The odd–even effect has been found in the I–N* transition temperatures where the odd-parity oligomers exhibit lower values when compared to compounds of an even-parity series. The X-ray diffraction measurements reveal the appearance of SmC* phase that can be associated with the monolayer ordering of these oligomers.  相似文献

Among unsymmetric oligomesogens, chiral dimers formed by connecting a cholesteryl ester fragment with various aromatic mesogenic cores through a polymethylene spacer have been attracting much attention due to their remarkable thermal behaviour. In particular, dimers containing a diphenylacetylene segment having an alkoxy chain have shown interesting mesomorphic behaviour. In view of this a new series of unsymmetric dimers consisting of a diphenylacetylene moiety having an alkyl chain and a cholesteryl ester unit joined through a paraffinic spacer have been synthesized and their liquid crystalline properties characterized. The lengths of the central methylene spacer (C3, C4, C5 and C7) as well as that of the alkyl chain (n-butyl, n-pentyl, n-hexyl and n-heptyl) have been varied to establish structure–property relationships. These investigations have revealed that all the dimers exhibit smectic A, twist grain boundary and chiral neamtic (N*) phases with the exception of one of the dimers for which only the N* phase was observed. Some differences in the mesomorphic properties of the unsymmetric dimers containing odd or even parity methylene spacers have been observed. The majority of dimers having an even (C4) parity paraffinic spacer show a blue phase while the dimers with odd (C3, C5 and C7) parity spacers exhibit the chiral smectic (SmC*) phase. In some cases, the SmC* phase exists well below (?60°C) and above room temperature.  相似文献

Some new unsymmetrical dimers consisting of a cholesteryl ester moiety, covalently linked to either a 4′-(1,3-difluoro-4-n-octyloxy) biphenyloxy or a 4′-(2,3-difluoro-4-n-decyloxy) biphenyloxy through odd-even parity paraffinic central spacers, have been synthesized and investigated for their mesomorphic behaviour. Except for one, all the dimers exhibit enantiotropic smectic A, twist grain boundary (TGB) and chiral nematic mesophases. Five of the eight unsymmetrical dimers synthesized show a chiral smectic C (SmC*) phase. Interestingly in some of the compounds the SmC* exists over a wide temperature range including room temperature. Among the eight compounds, a dimer having a C7 central paraffinic spacer and a C8 alkoxy terminal chain shows an enantiotropic twist grain boundary with SmC* blocks (TGBC*) phase. It appears that the variation in the length of the spacer has a remarkable influence on the phase transition temperatures as well as on the mesomorphic behaviour.  相似文献

The synthesis of new chiral monomers (M1 ?M3 ) based on menthol and the corresponding polyacrylates (P1 ?P3 ) is described. The chemical structures, formula and phase behaviour of the obtained monomers and polymers were characterised with FT-IR, 1H-NMR, elemental analyses, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarising optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The effect of the mesogenic core rigidity, spacer length and menthyl steric effect on the phase behaviour of M1 ?M3 and P1 ?P3 is discussed. The expected mesophase of the compounds based on menthol can be obtained by inserting a flexible spacer between the mesogenic core and the terminal groups. For the chiral monomers and polyacrylates, their corresponding melting temperature (T m), glass transition temperature (T g) and clearing temperature (T i) increased with an increase of the mesogenic core rigidity; while the T m, T g and T i decreased with increasing the spacer length. M1 and P1 showed no mesophase, while M2 and M3 all revealed a SmC* and cholesteric phases. P2 and P3 only showed a cholesteric phase.  相似文献

Two homologous series of λ-shaped chiral liquid crystal trimers composed of a laterally substituted benzylidene-aniline as the central core armed by two cholestryl ester moieties via odd-even alkyl spacer are synthesised. All the compounds are mesogenic exhibiting both chiral nematic (N*) and SmA phases except for trimers bearing long spacers (n = 9–10). A pronounced odd-even effect is observed on the phase transition temperatures and clearing enthalpies when the spacer length is varied in which the even-parity members show higher value. The widening of N* phase upon elongation of the alkyl spacer can be interpreted as a result of the destabilisation of SmA phase. Full recrystallisation from the cholesteric phase upon cooling is not observed for all the compounds bearing long spacer, especially oxydecanoyl spacer. Instead, the anisotropic fluid vitrified to form the cholesteric glassy state characteristic of polymer at low temperature. This finding is also evident from the polarising optical microscope whereby non-crystalline texture which resembles the Grandjean texture with various reflection colours is observed upon cooling to low temperature. The effect of the lateral substituents on the liquid-crystalline behaviour is also discussed.  相似文献

Three series of chiral liquid crystalline dimers were investigated, having a cholesteryl and a cyanobiphenylyl, butoxybiphenylyl or hexyloxybiphenylyl group connected to a variable alkyl spacer through ether linkages. Their properties were compared with those of the corresponding ester derivatives. The phase behaviour of compounds with ether and ester linkages is comparable, showing N* and SmA phases. The melting points of the compounds with ether linkages are in the same range as those of the ester compounds, but the liquid crystal transition temperatures are lower. The smectic layer spacings and smectic ordering properties are also similar. The cyanobiphenylyl compounds have an interdigitated SmA layer structure, which shows a small odd–even effect with spacer parity. The alkoxybiphenylyl compounds have a monolayer SmA phase for short spacers and an intercalated SmA phase for longer spacers. The selective reflection wavelengths of the chiral nematic phase of the ether compounds are lower than those of the corresponding ester compounds. The transition from N* to interdigitated or monolayer SmA is accompanied by a strong increase in the selective reflection wavelength, indicative of an intermediate TGB phase. This is absent for the transition from N* to intercalated SmA.  相似文献

To study structure–mesomorphism relationships of the monomers and polymers based on menthol, four new chiral monomers ( M1 – M4 ) and the corresponding homopolymers ( P1 – P4 ) with menthyl group were synthesized. Their chemical structures, formula, phase behavior, and thermal stability were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, elemental analyses, differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis. The selective reflection of light was investigated with ultraviolet/visible spectrometer. The influence of the mesogenic core rigidity, spacer length, and menthyl steric effect on the mesomorphism of M1 – M4 and P1 – P4 was examined. By inserting a flexible spacer between the mesogenic core and the terminal menthyl groups, four target monomers and polymers could form the expected mesophase. Moreover, their melting temperature (Tm), glass transition temperature (Tg), clearing temperature (Ti), and mesophase range (ΔT) increased with increasing the mesogenic core rigidity; whereas the Tm and Tg decreased, Ti and ΔT increased with an increase of the spacer length. M1 and M2 showed monotropic and enantiotropic cholesteric phase, respectively, whereas M3 and M4 all revealed chiral smectic C (SmC*), cholesteric and cubic blue phases. In addition, with increasing temperature, the selective reflection of light shifted to the long wavelength region at the SmC* phase range and to the short wavelength region at the cholesteric range, respectively. P1 and P2 only showed a smectic A (SmA) phase, whereas P3 and P4 exhibited the SmC* and SmA phases. All the obtained polymers had very good thermal stability. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Previous studies on liquid crystalline polyurethanes prepared from 4,4′-bis(2-hydroxyethoxy)biphenyl (BHBP) and 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate (TDI) were continued. In this article, a series of polyurethanes, which differ in the flexible spacer length and BHBP content is described. Poly(oxytetramethylene)diols of different molecular weights (PTMO, M n = 250, 650, 1000, 2000) were used as flexible spacers. The polyurethanes were investigated by DSC, polarizing microscopy, x-ray diffractometry, and IR spectroscopy. The molecular weight distribution was determined by GPC. The morphology of the polyurethanes was investigated by the SALS method. Partial replacement of BHBP by 25–75 mol % PTMO and the flexible spacer length influence the liquid crystalline properties, the phase transition temperatures, and the range of mesophase occurrence. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Abstract

Ferroelectric liquid crystalline polymers (FLCPs) with a low-moderate degree of polymerization were synthesized. These had a comb structure; the main chain was polyacrylate and the side chain consisted of a flexible spacer, a core and an optically active chiral end group. They exhibited electro-optic switching times ranging from a few milliseconds to a few seconds in the S*c phase. As the molecular weight M n increased, the range of the S*c shifted to higher temperatures. At a given temperature, the switching time increased with M n .

Spontaneous polarizations P s , apparent cone angles 2θ, electro-optic switching times τ and rotational viscosities η of some polyoxyethylene FLCPs and corresponding low molecular weight ferroelectric liquid crystal materials (FLCs) were also measured. This is the first report of polyoxyethylene FLCPs. There was no significant difference in P s and 2θ, which shows that the arrangement of the side chains in the FLCP is similar to that of the molecules in ordinary FLC. On the contrary, τ and η for the FLCPs were 102–103 times as large as those for FLCs. The rotational viscosity of the FLCP was mainly dependent on the side chain structure rather than on the spacer. Therefore collisions between adjacent side chains cause large η values in FLCPs rather than hindrance to side chain gyration due to the spacer group. By combining FLCPs with ITO-coated plastic substrates, a large area matrix driven display has been made. Although an improvement in switching time is still needed, a flexible and lightweight display like a sheet of paper will be available in the near future.  相似文献

A new class of cholesterol‐based non‐symmetric dimers have been synthesized and characterized. They comprise O‐alkylated cinnamic acid and pro‐mesogenic cholesterol segments interlinked covalently through a methylene spacer varying in its length and parity. All the dimers and some of the key precursors have been studied for their phase behaviour. All the intermediates show mesomorphism. Importantly, the thermal properties of dimers are found to be critically dependent on the parity of the flexible spacer. The dimers with odd‐parity spacer display chiral nematic and/or twist grain boundary phases. In contrast, the dimers with even‐parity spacer are either crystalline or exhibit metastable chiral nematic and/or twist grain boundary phases with the exception of one compound for which two unknown mesophases have been observed. The odd–even effect was found to be indistinct for selective reflection wavelengths of the chiral nematic phase. For some dimers, a variation in the pitch of the chiral nematic phase as a function of temperature was observed. Cyclic voltammetry experiments revealed the electrochemical properties of a representative liquid crystal dimer.  相似文献

In this report, based on the results derived from the extensive study into the thermal and photophysical properties, an anomalous mesomorphic behavior of photoluminescent, chiral nematic (N*) liquid crystalline dimers, belonging to two different series has been revealed. They comprise cholesterol and fluorescent three-ring Schiff base or salicylaldimine core interlinked via an ω-oxyalkanoyloxy spacer of varying length and parity. The effect of molecular structure on the liquid crystal (LC) behavior and photophysical properties of both the series has been probed by varying the length of the terminal n-alkoxy tails for a fixed (odd or even) parity of the spacer. The detailed investigations using complementary techniques not only evidenced the existence of the N* phase in all the dimers synthesized but also the occurrence of an intriguing odd-even effect; blue phases (BPs) exist in all the dimers comprising even-membered spacer, which surprisingly remains totally absent in their odd-membered counterparts. While the results reported hitherto are exactly opposite to the aforesaid findings, this atypical behavior has been interpreted in terms of the over-all shape of the dimers rendered by the orientation of terminal tails. Photophysical studies carried out clearly revealed the intrinsic light emitting feature of the dimers not only in their dilute solutions but also in their three condensed states viz., solid, N* phase, and isotropic liquid state; the emission intensities of the N* phase varies with the change in temperature, as expected. CD spectra of the N* phase recorded as a function of temperature show bisignate CD band characteristically, signifying large chiral correlations in the molecular self-assembly, while the origin of bands from positive to negative region suggests a right-handed twist of the N* helix.  相似文献

Dynamic electro-optic response of the liquid crystal (LC) director shows a backflow effect that is manifested as an optical bounce in chiral nematic LCs (N*LC) during field-induced homeotropic-twisted transition. The bend elastic constant (K33) strongly influences the dynamics of backflow at the N*LC in homeotropic-twisted transition. The cyanobiphenyl LC dimers – CB7CB, CB9CB and CB11CB – possess a unique characteristic of inherent bend molecular configuration that lowers K33. With the modulation of the effective K33 in dimer-doped N*LCs, we report the tunability of the optical bounce that decreases with the increase in the length of flexible spacers in LC dimers. The doped LC dimers with short spacer lengths not only generate a strong backflow with an enhanced twist degeneracy of the LC director across the cell, but also prolong the time of disappearance of the optical bounce. Furthermore, we demonstrate the suppression of the optical bounce with surface localised polymer protrusions having 50–100 nm diameters, which allow faster dynamic relaxation process and reduced backflow. We envision a novel design of a tunable microfluidic device for precise flow control of organic or inorganic matter in LC medium that exploits the tunable backflow in LC dimer-doped N*LCs.  相似文献

The smectic properties of four series of dimer liquid crystals containing cholesteryl and biphenylyl groups were investigated by polarization microscopy, DSC and X-ray diffraction. Compounds that contain the strongly dipolar cyanobiphenylyl group exhibit a smectic layer spacing that is about 1.7 times the length of the molecule. Three series of alkoxybiphenylylcontaining dimers exhibit two other smectic modifications. For short spacers, a smectic layer spacing is observed that is about the same length as the molecule and for long spacers the smectic layer spacing is about half the length of the molecule. In the latter cases the entropy change at the SmA-N* transition is clearly larger than for the compounds with the other smectic modifications. One or two compounds in each alkoxybiphenylyl-containing series, that have similar spacer length and terminal group length and have an odd number of flexible units in the spacer, exhibit only a chiral nematic phase, and no smectic phase.  相似文献

Blue phase (BP) stability of a chiral nematic liquid crystal (LC) mixture is dependent upon chemical structure as well as physical properties. In this study, the blue phase temperature range dependent on alkyl chain length was investigated in order to evaluate the relationship between blue phase stability and the molecular structures of four kinds of 4-n-alkyloxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl (n-OCB) homologue chiral nematic LC mixtures composed of rod-like nematic LCs. It was confirmed that the blue phase temperature range was strongly dependent upon the molecular parity, K 33/K 11 and the helical twist power of the n-OCB homologues chiral nematic LC mixtures.  相似文献

Two series of difunctional proton acceptors, stilbazole derivatives 4a – c and 6a – c with different spacers, oligo(methylene) and oligo(ethylene glycol), respectively, were synthesized. Hydrogen‐bonded polymeric complexes 4 / 7 and 6 / 7 and trimeric complexes 4 / 82 and 6 / 82 ( 7 and 8 are aromatic dicarboxylic acids and monocarboxylic acids, respectively) were prepared, and their liquid crystallinity was examined. The effects of the spacer in 4 , 6 , and 7 and the terminal group in 8 on the thermal behaviors of hydrogen‐bonded complexes were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy. X‐ray diffraction at elevated temperatures was used to verify liquid crystal phases. The study showed that the phase transition temperatures for isotropic to nematic (TI–Ns) of polymeric complexes 4 / 7 and 6 / 7 in general decreased with the increase in length of spacer in the corresponding proton donors 7 . The increase in length of the proton acceptors 6 led to a drop of TI–Ns of the corresponding complexes 6 / 7 ; however, the TI–Ns of complexes 4 / 7 did not show any correlation with the spacer length in 4 . In contrast, the increase in length of the terminal group in 8 resulted in a slight decrease in TI–Ns of trimeric complexes 4 / 82 , but had a negligible effect on the TI–Ns of 6 / 82 because of the presence of the more flexible spacer in the proton acceptors 6 . © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This report elaborates the synthesis of symmetrical triads based on multialkynylbenzene linked via flexible alkyl spacers. Four mesogens were synthesised in which multialkynylbenzene units were connected to each other in a side-by-side fashion with varying flexible alkyl spacers. The compound with longest alkyl spacer, i.e. n = 7, exhibited ND phase which has been characterised by polarised optical microscopy and detailed X-ray scattering studies (small/wide-angle X-ray scattering). Surprisingly, this triad shows ND phase at high temperature as compared to our previous reports on room-temperature ND phases.  相似文献

Seven symmetric liquid crystal (LC) dimers containing different chiral cores and LC arms have been synthesised, termed EPDA-(R,S)PD, TFBDA-(R,S)PD, TFBA-(R,S)PD, TFBDA-(R)PD, TFBA-(R)PD, TFBDA-IB and TFBA-IB, respectively. TFBDA-(R,S)PD, TFBA-(R,S)PD, TFBDA-(R)PD and TFBDA-IB displayed chiral smectic A (SmA*) phase, while EPDA-(R,S)PD, TFBA-(R)PD and TFBA-IB exhibited chiral nematic (N*) phase. The effects of flexible spacer, structural type of LC arms and the chirality of the cores on the thermal properties of the dimers and the formation of N* phase have been studied. The results indicated that the chiral core was prone to induce the N* phase in LC dimer that contained nematic arms although the chirality of the core is very weak, while for the smectic LC arms containing CF3 terminal, the removal of the flexible spacer between chiral core and rigid LC units was conducive to the formation of N* phase. For example, TFBDA-(R)PD and TFBDA-IB displayed SmA* phase, while TFBA-(R)PD and TFBA-IB exhibited N* phase. However TFBA-(R,S)PD did not display N* phase, which reminded us that the chirality of the core and the conformation of the dimer also played an influence in the formation of the LC phase.  相似文献

A series of liquid crystals (LCs) of bromine-terminated azobenzene were synthesised and characterised. The LCs were composed of an azobenzene core, an alkyl chain and a flexible spacer with a bromine atom at a remote position. Mesomorphic properties were dependent on both the alkyl chain length and the relative position of the bromine atom at the end of the spacer group. The nematic phase was favoured over the smectic A phase for alkyl chains with one and seven carbon atoms. However, the SmA mesophase was dominant for compounds with 10-carbon alkyl chains. The remote bromine atom in the spacer group favoured SmA for homologous with n-decyl chains and the nematic phase for n-heptyl and methyl groups. Molecular modelling showed that the azobenzene LCs tended to adopt the all trans-conformation in the gas phase as the number of carbon atoms increased. For short spacer groups, bent conformations contributed to the level population proportion of conformers. For the non-LC 5a, the gauche conformation became the most stable with a torsional angle of –68.9°. X-ray experiments showed a monolamellar SmA mesophase in an antiparallel arrangement. Absorption maxima at 360 and 440 nm were assigned to π–π* and n–π* transitions, respectively.  相似文献
