A series of symmetrical azine-type liquid crystals were synthesized. The characteristic of these liquid crystals is that they had high clearing point ( ~320 ℃) and broad thermal range of nematic phase ( ~154 ℃). It was also found that the end groups of the liquid crystals had effect on the mesomorphic properties.  相似文献

A semiperfluorinated chain has been introduced into three series of lactate-based molecules,and their mesomorphic properities have been studied by DSC and optical polarized microscope.An abnormal phenomenon has been found that the introduction of a triple bond in the core of the molecule,which lengthened the molecule,gave rise to a decrease in the thermal stability of chiral smectic C phase and smectic A phase.2,3-Difluoro substituents of the phenylenic structure hinder the formation of the chiral smectic C phase because of the steric effect.  相似文献

Abstract

Liquid crystals can exhibit large third order optical non-linearities. Using the Z-scan technique, we have measured the intensity dependence of the non-linear absorption and non-linear refractive indices on time-scales ranging from milliseconds to picoseconds for nematic liquid crystals. This method allows the determination of the non-linear absorption coefficients as well as the signs and magnitudes of the non-linear refractive indices for different polarizations. A two pulse technique further enables estimation of the response time of the dominant mechanism. Using CW argon and Q-switched and mode-locked pumped dye lasers, we have carried out Z-scan measurements on aligned liquid crystal samples as a function of temperature, as well as wavelength. In the geometries studied, director reorientation is not expected to take place. On the nanosecond time-scale, all materials studied were self-focusing for polarization perpendicular to the director, and self-defocusing for parallel polarization. On the picosecond timescale, the samples were self-focusing for all polarizations, but strong non-linear birefringence was typically observed. An attempt is made to relate the bulk response to the molecular structures.  相似文献

The spinodal equation and the concentration-induced anisotropic-isotropic transition equation of the mixtures of thermotropic liquid crystals and flexible polymers have been studied by using the molecular field theory The calculations of the phase diagrams of this system show that,besides the isotropic classic spinodal curve,there ex ists an anisotropic spinodal curve which has not been reported in literature.These two spinodal curves can be linked up by the concentration-induced anisotropic-isotropic transition line.In the various phase regions,demixing may take place due to different phase separation mechanisms.The phase equilibrium curve cannot always join the.spinodal curve at a critical point.These results are considered very meaningful for the understanding of the special properties of liquid crystal/polymer composites and very useful for controlling the morphology and the performance of PDLC materials  相似文献

A series of propeller-shaped π-conjugated molecules based on 2,4,6-tris(thiophene-2-yl)-1,3,5-triazines has been designed and synthesized to obtain ambipolar charge-transporting liquid-crystalline materials. The 3-fold electron-donating aromatic units are attached to the electron-accepting triazine core, which forms electro-functional octupolar π-conjugated structures. These octupolar molecules self-organize into one-dimensional columnar nanostructures and exhibit ambipolar carrier transport behavior, which has been revealed by time-of-flight measurements. In this approach, electron-donor and acceptor electro-active segments are assembled individually in each column to give one-dimensional nanostructured materials with precisely tuned electronic properties. Their desirable electronic structures responsible for both hole and electron conductions have also been examined by cyclic voltammetry and theoretical calculations. The present results provide a new guideline and versatile approach to the design of ambipolar conductive nanostructured liquid-crystalline materials.  相似文献

Soft matter has become involved in all aspects of everyday life over the past few decades, from diapers and the water-absorbing colloidal crystals hidden in them to the omnipresent liquid crystal displays. This article discusses an introduction to one example of soft matter – liquid crystals – at various educational levels. It stresses the importance of experimental work and presents a few simplified versions of elaborate techniques graduate students later meet in laboratories. A set of simple experiments, which illustrate typical phenomena for liquid crystals, but use different approaches or different materials than liquid crystals, are also presented. Drawing upon analogies is an essential part of an active researcher’s thought processes. By providing analogous experiences and showing clear analogies between various phenomena, a lecturer can train students in the use of analogies as a standard approach when encountering new problems.  相似文献

An alignment film derived from a photopolymerized self‐assembled film may be used to orient nematic liquid crystals after irradiating the film with linearly polarized UV (LPUV). A photosensitive cationic amphiphile was first synthesized containing two double bonds and which could be polymerized by UV. A layer‐by‐layer self‐assembled multilayer film was next prepared in an aqueous solution of the cationic amphiphile and poly(sodium 4‐styrenesulphonate); the UV‐Vis spectra showed that each layer of the LBL multilayer film was uniform. When the film was irradiated by LPUV, the photosensitive double bonds underwent [2+2] cycloaddition along the vector direction of LPUV. The polarized UV‐Vis absorption spectra also provided evidence that the film was anisotropic, i.e. the photopolymerization was along a certain direction. The anisotropic film was used as an alignment layer for nematic liquid crystals, and observations under a polarizing microscope indicated that the alignment of the liquid crystals was good, as expected, and that the orientation direction of the liquid crystals was always perpendicular to the electric vector of the irradiating LPUV.  相似文献

As part of our study of the mesomorphic properties of glucopyranosides containing fluorinated chains, this paper focuses on an investigation of the liquid crystalline behaviour of nonaromatic compounds. The synthesis of eight single-tailed materials which contain a semiperfluoroalkyl chain linked to the polar glucose head group is described. Using polarized optical microscopy, DSC and X-ray diffraction all the materials were found to show only monomesomorphism, a smectic A phase with bimolecular layers. The thermal behaviour is discussed in comparison with the previously reported data on the series of parent compounds.  相似文献

We have measured the rheological properties of two cholesterol derivatives (cholesteryl myristate and cholesteryl nonanoate) in the vicinity of their cholesteric–smecticA transitions. The results for the two compounds differ qualitatively, and are in agreement with results based on optical observations of new defects in cholesteryl nonanoate showing that this material, traditionally considered as a typical cholesteric, in fact exhibits a TGBA phase between the cholesteric and smectic A phases.  相似文献

We have examined the effect of β-peptide modifications on the propensity of these helical molecules to form lyotropic liquid crystalline (LC) phases in water. All of the β-peptides we have examined contain 10 residues. In each case, at least three residues are derived from trans-2-aminocyclohexanecarboxylic acid (ACHC), which strongly promotes folding to a 14-helical conformation. The structural features varied include the number of ACHC residues, the nature and spatial arrangement of charged side chains (cationic vs anionic), and the identity of groups at the β-peptide termini. We found that relatively small changes (e.g., swapping the positions of a cationic and an anionic side chain) could have large effects, such as abrogation of LC phase formation. The trends revealed by sequence-property studies led to the design of LC-forming β-peptides that bear biomolecular recognition groups (biotin or the tripeptide Arg-Gly-Asp). Structural analysis via circular dichroism and cryo-transmission electron microscopy revealed the existence of two different types of self-associated species, globular aggregates and nanofibers. Nanofibers are the predominant assembly formed at concentrations that lead to LC phase formation, and we conclude that these nanofibers are the functional mesogens. Overall, these studies show how the modularity of β-peptide oligomers enables elucidation of the relationship between molecular structure and large-scale self-assembly behavior.  相似文献

Measurements of pressure, molar volume and specific heat as functions of temperature in the isotropic (I) phase as well as in the smectic A (SmA) and nematic (N) mesophases of some alkyloxycyanobiphenyl compounds (nOCB, n = 6–10) were carried out using differential thermal analysis under pressure, densitometry, X‐ray powder diffraction and modulated differential scanning calorimetry. Thermodynamic properties, such as latent heats and volume jumps at the different phase transitions, were determined. The coherence of this whole set of data was tested using pressure–temperature data through the slopes associated to their phase transitions, extrapolated at normal pressure in the light of the Clausius–Clapeyron equation.  相似文献

1,3‐Dipolar cycloaddition of organic azides to triple bonds, or ‘click chemistry’ has been used in order to obtain chiral 1,4‐disubstituted [1,2,3]‐triazoles. Liquid crystalline compounds bearing such heterocycles were prepared and SmA and N* (cholesteric) phases identified. Contact experiments indicated a right‐handed helix (RH‐helix) for the cholesteric phase, and attempts to corroborate experimental and theoretical results are presented.  相似文献

The synthesis and mesomorphic behaviour of a series of wedge‐shaped liquid crystals and some reference compounds are reported. These unusual liquid crystals possess smectic C, smectic A and nematic phases. These new wedge‐shaped materials with a high degree of shape anisotropy and a large dipole moment can be used to induce an increase in the flexoelectric effects of nematic guest–host mixtures as dopants at low concentrations.  相似文献

The present work arises from the significant difference between the experimental Landau tricritical point (LTCP) in the Sm A-to-N phase transition in binary mixtures of butyloxybenzylidene octylaniline (4O.8) and hexyloxybenzylidene octylaniline (6O.8) predicted by Stine and Garland, and that arising from the thermodynamic assessment using the Oonk's Equal Gibbs Curve method. By use of specific heat measurements the 4O.8 + 6O.8, phase diagram has been determined anew. The results of the subsequent application of Oonk's thermodynamic analysis are discussed and their compatibility with the behaviour universally exhibited by other liquid crystal binary mixtures for which a LTCP in the SmA-to-N phase transition has been experimentally determined are analysed.  相似文献

The synthesis is reported of a series of apolar nematic liquid crystals incorporating an alkoxyalkoxy chain attached in a terminal position to the molecular core. The dependence of the mesomorphism and phase transition temperatures on the nature of the terminal chain with one, two or three oxygen atoms was studied. Some compounds with a completely alicyclic molecular core and a terminal 2‐methoxyethoxy chain exhibit a nematic phase with a low melting point, birefringence and viscosity and a relatively high clearing point in the absence of smectic phases. They do not to absorb light in the near UV and may be useful as components of UV‐stable nematic mixtures for use in photoluminescent liquid crystal displays. The presence of the methoxyethoxy chain leads to a relatively large dipole moment perpendicular to the molecular long axis.  相似文献

The synthesis is reported of a series of polar nematic liquid crystals incorporating an alkoxyalkoxy chain attached in a terminal position to a molecular core consisting of two aromatic rings. The dependence of the mesomorphism and phase transition temperatures on the nature of this terminal chain was studied. The shape anisotropy of the core is increased by the presence of an additional 1,4‐disubstituted phenyl unit in a number of p‐terphenyls. A number of highly polar esters with a terminal methoxyethoxy chain have been prepared as dopants to lower the threshold voltage of LCDs. The presence of the methoxyethoxy chain leads to an increase in the molecular dipole moment, the dielectric anisotropy and the dielectric constant perpendicular to the molecular long axis. Several compounds with a four‐unit diether central linkage were also prepared.  相似文献

We revisit a theoretical paper of Akopyan and Zel’dovich about the thermomechanical coupling terms in nematic liquid crystals. We show that the expressions of these terms given by these authors must be corrected to satisfy the Onsager reciprocity relations, a point already stressed by Pleiner and Brand in 1987. We then extend this calculation to the cholesteric phase and show that there are no additional terms in the uniaxial approximation of this phase. Finally, we give the correspondence between the Akopyan and Zel’dovich terms and those calculated by Pleiner and Brand in 1996 by making a different choice for the forces and the fluxes in the theory.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Aiming at developing a new type of materials for functional applications, three series of new compounds were prepared, 3-(biphenylyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazoles, Series I; laterally mono-fluorinated 3-(biphenylyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazoles, Series II; and 5-(biphenylyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazoles, Series III. Liquid crystalline properties of these compounds were studied using differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy. Ten of the thirteen compounds in Series I are mesogenic forming either N or SmA phases depending on the length-to-width molecular ratio. Mesogens of the positional isomers, Series III are both N and SmA. Monofluorination of the biphenylyl group at either the central or the terminal phenylene rings, Series III, resulted in the formation of nematic mesogens with low phase transition temperatures and broad nematic phase range.  相似文献

正A homologous series of heterocycles,6-methyl-2-(4-alkoxybenzylidenamino)benzothiazoles,were synthesized and characterized using FT-IR,~1H and ~(13)C NMR and mass spectrometric analysis.Enantiotropic nematic phase was observed for shorter members.Smectic A phase only emerged from octyloxy derivative onwards.The terminal methyl group at the benzothiazole fragment and the Schiff base linkage influenced the mesomorphic behavior of the present series.  相似文献
