The present paper deals with the study of heat transfer characteristics in the laminar boundary layer flow of an incompressible viscous fluid over an unsteady stretching sheet which is placed in a porous medium in the presence of viscous dissipation and internal absorption or generation. Similarity transformations are used to convert the governing time dependent nonlinear boundary layer equations into a system of non-linear ordinary differential equations containing Prandtl number, Eckert number, heat source/sink parameter, porous parameter and unsteadiness parameter with appropriate boundary conditions. These equations are solved numerically by applying shooting method using Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg method. Comparison of numerical results is made with the earlier published results under limiting cases. The effects of the parameters which determine the velocity and temperature fields are discussed in detail.  相似文献

An exact and a numerical solutions to the problem of a steady mixed convective MHD flow of an incompressible viscous electrically conducting fluid past an infinite vertical porous plate with combined heat and mass transfer are presented.A uniform magnetic field is assumed to be applied transversely to the direction of the flow with the consideration of the induced magnetic field with viscous and magnetic dissipations of energy. The porous plate is subjected to a constant suction velocity as well as a uniform mixed stream velocity. The governing equations are solved by the perturbation technique and a numerical method. The analytical expressions for the velocity field, the temperature field, the induced magnetic field, the skin-friction,and the rate of heat transfer at the plate are obtained. The numerical results are demonstrated graphically for various values of the parameters involved in the problem. The effects of the Hartmann number, the chemical reaction parameter, the magnetic Prandtl number, and the other parameters involved in the velocity field, the temperature field, the concentration field, and the induced magnetic field from the plate to the fluid are discussed. An increase in the heat source/sink or the Eckert number is found to strongly enhance the fluid velocity values. The induced magnetic field along the x-direction increases with the increase in the Hartmann number, the magnetic Prandtl number, the heat source/sink,and the viscous dissipation. It is found that the flow velocity, the fluid temperature, and the induced magnetic field decrease with the increase in the destructive chemical reaction.Applications of the study arise in the thermal plasma reactor modelling, the electromagnetic induction, the magnetohydrodynamic transport phenomena in chromatographic systems, and the magnetic field control of materials processing.  相似文献

The laminar and parallel flow of a Newtonian fluid in a vertical cylindrical duct with circular cross section has been analysed. Both the viscous dissipation effect and the buoyancy effect have been taken into account. The momentum balance equation and the energy balance equation have been solved by means of a perturbation method, in the case of a uniform heat flux prescribed at the wall of the duct. The velocity distribution, the temperature distribution, the Nusselt number and the Fanning friction factor have been evaluated analytically. Moreover, the velocity and temperature of the fluid have been compared with those obtained in two special cases: forced convection with viscous dissipation (i.e. negligible buoyancy effect); mixed convection with negligible effects of viscous dissipation. This paper investigates the problem of hydrodynamic boundary layer flow and heat transfer of a dusty fluid over an unsteady stretching surface. The study considers the effects of frictional heating(viscous dissipation) and internal heat generation or absorption. The basic equations governing the flow and heat transfer are reduced to a set of non-linear ordinary differential equations by applying suitable similarity transformations. The transformed equations are numerically solved by the Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg-45 order method. An analysis is carried out for two different cases of heating processes, namely, variable wall temperature(VWT) and variable heat flux(VHF).The effects of various physical parameters such as the magnetic parameter, the fluid-particle interaction parameter, the unsteady parameter, the Prandtl number, the Eckert number, the number density of dust particles, and the heat source/sink parameter on velocity and temperature profiles are shown in several plots. The effects of the wall temperature gradient function and the wall temperature function are tabulated and discussed.  相似文献

The entropy generation and heat transfer characteristics of magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) third-grade fluid flow through a vertical porous microchannel with a convective boundary condition are analyzed. Entropy generation due to flow of MHD non-Newtonian third-grade fluid within a microchannel and temperature-dependent viscosity is studied using the entropy generation rate and Vogel's model. The equations describing flow and heat transport along with boundary conditions are first made dimensionless using proper non-dimensional transformations and then solved numerically via the finite element method(FEM). An appropriate comparison is made with the previously published results in the literature as a limiting case of the considered problem. The comparison confirms excellent agreement. The effects of the Grashof number, the Hartmann number, the Biot number, the exponential space-and thermal-dependent heat source(ESHS/THS) parameters, and the viscous dissipation parameter on the temperature and velocity are studied and presented graphically. The entropy generation and the Bejan number are also calculated. From the comprehensive parametric study, it is recognized that the production of entropy can be improved with convective heating and viscous dissipation aspects. It is also found that the ESHS aspect dominates the THS aspect.  相似文献

The steady mixed convection flow and heat transfer from an exponentially stretching vertical surface in a quiescent Maxwell fluid in the presence of magnetic field, viscous dissipation and Joule heating have been studied. The stretching velocity, surface temperature and magnetic field are assumed to have specific exponential function forms for the existence of the local similarity solution. The coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations governing the local similarity flow and heat transfer have been solved numerically by Chebyshev finite difference method. The influence of the buoyancy parameter, viscous dissipation, relaxation parameter of Maxwell fluid, magnetic field and Prandtl number on the flow and heat transfer has been considered in detail. The Nusselt number increases significantly with the Prandtl number, but the skin friction coefficient decreases. The Nusselt number slightly decreases with increasing viscous dissipation parameter, but the skin friction coefficient slightly increases. Maxwell fluid reduces both skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number, whereas buoyancy force enhances them.  相似文献

The heat transfer and entropy generation characteristics of the magnetohydrodynamic Casson fluid flow through an inclined microchannel with convective boundary conditions are analyzed.Further, the effects of the viscous forces,Joule heating, heat source/sink,and radiation on the flow are taken into account. The non-dimensional transformations are used to solve the governing equations. Then, the reduced system is resolved by the fourth-fifth order Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg method along with the shooting technique. The effects of different physical parameters on the heat transfer and entropy generation are discussed in detail through graphs. From the perspective of numerical results,it is recognized that the production of entropy can be improved with the Joule heating, viscous dissipation, and convective heating aspects. It is concluded that the production of entropy is the maximum with increases in the Casson parameter, the angle of inclination, and the Hartmann number. Both the Reynolds number and the radiation parameter cause the dual impact on entropy generation.  相似文献

In this paper we present a mathematical analysis of heat and mass transfer phenomena in a visco–elastic fluid flow over an accelerating stretching sheet in the presence of heat source/sink, viscous dissipation and suction/blowing. Similarity transformations are used to convert highly non-linear partial differential equations into ordinary differential equations. Several closed form analytical solutions for non-dimensional temperature, concentration, heat flux, mass flux profiles are obtained in the form of confluent hypergeometric (Kummer's) functions for two different cases of the boundary conditions, namely, (i) wall with prescribed second order power law temperature and second order power law concentration (PST), and (ii) wall with prescribed second order power law heat flux and second order power law mass flux (PHF). The effect of various physical parameters like visco–elasticity, Eckert number, Prandtl number, heat source/sink, Schmidt number and suction/blowing parameter on temperature and concentration profiles are analysed. The effects of all these parameters on wall temperature gradient and wall concentration gradient are also discussed. Received on 23 March 2000 / Published online: 29 November 2001  相似文献

The aim of the paper is to investigate the effect of heat and mass transfer on the unsteady magnetohydrodynamic free convective flow with Hall current, heat source, and viscous dissipation. The problem is governed by the system of coupled non-linear partial differential equations whose exact solution is difficult to obtain. Therefore, the problem is solved by using the Galerkin finite element method. The effects of the various parameters like Hall current, Eckert number, heat source parameter, Prandtl number, and Schmidt number on the velocity components, the temperature, and the concentration are also examined through graphs.  相似文献

Forced convection heat transfer in a non-Newtonian fluid flow inside a pipe whose external surface is subjected to non-axisymmetric heat loads is investigated analytically. Fully developed laminar velocity distributions obtained by a power-law fluid rheology model are used, and viscous dissipation is taken into account. The effect of axial heat conduction is considered negligible. The physical properties are assumed to be constant. We consider that the smooth change in the velocity distribution inside the pipe is piecewise constant. The theoretical analysis of the heat transfer is performed by using an integral transform technique – Vodicka’s method. An important feature of this approach is that it permits an arbitrary distribution of the surrounding medium temperature and an arbitrary velocity distribution of the fluid. This technique is verified by a comparison with the existing results. The effects of the Brinkman number and rheological properties on the distribution of the local Nusselt number are shown.  相似文献

The interaction of the viscous dissipation effect with the presence of buoyancy forces is investigated for laminar-flow heat transfer in a parallel-plate vertical channel. One of the channel walls is considered as isothermal with a prescribed temperature, while the other wall is considered as insulated. The velocity field is assumed to be parallel. The velocity field, the temperature field and the Nusselt number are obtained by a perturbation series method which employs the ratio between the Grashof number and the Reynolds number as the perturbation parameter. The radius of convergence of the perturbation series is estimated. Received on 10 December 1997  相似文献

The effects of non-uniform heat generation/absorption and viscous dissipation on heat transfer of a non-Newtonian power-law fluid on a non-linearly stretching surface have been examined. The governing nonlinear partial differential equations describing the problem are transformed to a system of non-linear ordinary differential equations by using suitable similarity transformation. The transformed system of ordinary differential equations is solved numerically using fourth order Runge-Kutta method with the shooting technique. Graphical solutions for the dimensionless temperature are presented and discussed for various values of the power-law index parameter, the Prandtl number, the heat generation/absorption parameter and the Eckert number. The results show that the local Nusselt number is reduced with increasing the Eckert number or the heat generation parameter, whereas the heat absorption parameter has the effect of enhancing the local Nusselt number.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the steady momentum and heat transfer of a viscous fluid flow over a stretching/shrinking sheet. Exact solutions are presented for the Navier-Stokes equations. The new solutions provide a more general formulation including the linearly stretching and shrinking wall problems as well as the asymptotic suction velocity profiles over a moving plate. Interesting non-linear phenomena are observed in the current results including both exponentially decaying solution and algebraically decaying solution, multiple solutions with infinite number of solutions for the flow field, and velocity overshoot. The energy equation ignoring viscous dissipation is solved exactly and the effects of the mass transfer parameter, the Prandtl number, and the wall stretching/shrinking strength on the temperature profiles and wall heat flux are also presented and discussed. The exact solution of this general flow configuration is a rare case for the Navier-Stokes equation.  相似文献

A theoretical solution is presented for the convective heat transfer of Giesekus viscoelastic fluid in pipes and channels, under fully developed thermal and hydrodynamic flow conditions, for an imposed constant heat flux at the wall. The fluid properties are taken as constant and axial conduction is negligible. The effect of Weissenberg number (We), mobility parameter (α) and Brinkman number (Br) on the temperature profile and Nusselt number are investigated. The results emphasize the significant effect of viscous dissipation and fluid elasticity on the Nusselt number in all circumstances. For wall cooling and the Brinkman number exceeds a critical value (Br 1), the heat generated by viscous dissipation overcomes the heat removed at the wall and fluid heats up longitudinally. Fluid elasticity shifts this critical Brinkman number to higher values.  相似文献

Combined free and forced convection flow in a parallel plate vertical channel filled with porous matrix is analyzed in the fully developed region with boundary conditions of third kind. The flow is modeled using the Brinkman?CForchheimer-extended Darcy equations. The plates exchange heat with an external fluid. Both conditions of equal and different reference temperatures of the external fluid are considered. Governing equations are solved numerically by shooting technique that uses classical explicit Runge?CKutta scheme and Newton?CRaphson method as a correction scheme and analytically using perturbation series method for Darcy model. The velocity field, the temperature field and Nusselt numbers are obtained for governing parameters such as porous parameter, inertia term and perturbation parameter for equal and unequal Biot numbers and are displayed graphically. The dimensionless mean velocity and bulk temperature are also determined. It is found that the numerical solutions agree for small values of the perturbation parameter in the absence of the inertial forces.  相似文献

Convective flow and heat transfer in an inclined channel bounded by two rigid plates held at constant different temperatures with one region filled with porous matrix saturated with a viscous fluid and another region with a clear viscous fluid different from the fluid in first region is studied analytically. The coupled nonlinear governing equations are solved using regular perturbation method. It is found that the presence of porous matrix in one of the region reduces the velocity and temperature. Results have been presented for a wide range of governing parameters such as Grashof number, porous parameter, angle of inclination, ratio of heights of the two layers and also the ratio of viscosities.  相似文献

The present paper deals with the analysis of boundary layer flow and heat transfer of a dusty fluid over a stretching sheet with the effect of non-uniform heat source/sink. Here we consider two types of heating processes namely (i) prescribed surface temperature and (ii) prescribed surface heat flux. The momentum and thermal boundary layer equations of motion are solved numerically using Runge Kutta Fehlberg fourth–fifth order method (RKF45 Method). The effects of fluid particle interaction parameter, Eckert number, Prandtl number, Number of dust particle and non-uniform heat generation/absorption parameter on temperature distribution are analyzed and also the effect of wall temperature gradient function and wall temperature function are tabulated and discussed.  相似文献

This article investigates a theoretical and numerical study for the effect of viscous dissipation on the steady flow with heat transfer of Newtonian fluid toward a permeable stretching surface embedded in a porous medium with a second-order slip and thermal slip. The governing nonlinear partial differential equations are converted into nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) using similarity variables. The resulting ODEs are successfully solved numerically with the help of Chebyshev finite difference method. Graphically results are shown for non-dimensional velocities and temperature. The effects of the porous parameter, the suction (injection) parameter, Eckert number, first- and second-order velocity slip parameter, the thermal slip parameter and the Prandtl number on the flow and temperature profiles are presented. Moreover, the local skin-friction and Nusselt numbers are presented. A comparison of numerical results is made with the earlier published results under limiting cases.  相似文献

The transient problem of coupled heat and mass transfer of a micropolar fluid in magneto‐hydrodynamic free convection from a vertical infinite porous plate with an exponentially decaying heat generating considering the viscous dissipation and ohmic heating effects is studied. Joule heating must be considered when the viscous dissipation and the Prandtl number are large. The non‐dimensional equations for the conservation of mass, momentum, energy and concentration are solved by means a numerical technique based on electric analogy (network simulation method). This method provides the numerical response of the system by running the network in circuit resolution software with the solution to both transient and steady‐state problems at the same time, and its programming does not require manipulation of the sophisticated mathematical software that is inherent in other numerical methods. The effects of the material parameters, viscous dissipation, internal generation and Joule heating on velocity, angular momentum and temperature fields across the boundary layer are investigated. In addition, the skin‐friction coefficient, couple stress coefficient, Nusselt number and Sherwood number are shown in tabular form. The numerical results for velocity and temperature distributions of micropolar fluids are compared with the corresponding flow problems for a Newtonian fluid. The problem of steady, laminar mixed convective flow and heat transfer of an electrically conducting fluid through a vertical channel with heat source or sink is analyzed. The effects of viscous and Ohmic dissipations are included in the energy equation. Both walls are kept either at the same or different temperatures such as isothermal-isothermal, isoflux-isothermal and isothermal-isoflux conditions. Analytical solutions are found using regular perturbation technique and numerical solutions are found using finite difference method. A selected set of graphical results illustrating the effects of various parameters involved in the problem on the flow as well as flow reversal situation and Nusselt numbers are presented and discussed. It is also found that both the analytical and numerical solutions agree very well for small values of the perturbation parameter.  相似文献
